House destroyed by fire

n Saturday morning a fire destroyed the home of Mr. Ghislain Lafreniere.

is the probable cause.

Mr. Lafreniere was awakened by the sound of two smoke detectors. He then proceeded downstairs where smoke was quickly invading the home. As he walked towards the stove he noticed flames coming thru from the ceiling.

On exiting the premises he called 911.

Shortly after the call the Chapleau Fire Department arrived but according to Mr.

Lafreniere within 10 to 15 minutes of his exit thirty foot flames were already coming out of the house.

His experience as a former fire fighter served him well in his decision not to re-enter the house to fetch his wallet. He placed his hand on the door to feel for heat and at that point decided not to enter due to the probability of a flashover.

The house is situated within town-

ship limits but no water or sewage services are provided in that area which of course includes water hydrants. The fire department had to make a multitude of trips to the fire hydrant located at Chapleau Auto Parts to fill up the tankers.

Unfortunately, due to the high cost of insurance associated with, amongst other things, not having hydrants available

within a reasonable distance, Mr. Lafreniere had no insurance coverage for the house.

“I’d like to thank both the Chapleau Fire Department and the Ontario Provincial Police for their professionalism” said Mr. Lafreniere.

For those who neglect to install smoke detectors or to change their smoke detector batteries at least once a year please

note that a life was saved in Chapleau on September 28th, 2013 in the early morning hours due to not one but two working smoke detectors.

Three or four minutes longer and a fatality would have occurred.

For those wishing to help get Mr. Lafreniere get back on his feet, a trust account has been set up at the Royal Bank in Chapleau.

Letters to the Editor Please allow me to comment on the l e t t e r b y M r. B i l l McLeod, maligning the memory of a distinguished World War I & II Veteran and a very community minded citizen, Mr. J. M. Shoup-.

He gave of himself with unselfish dedication, and was a very excellent teacher

in my life and my siblings also.

He is the principal who taught us to march to our rooms, held assembly every morning, where we sang “O Canada” and sang God save the King, said the Lord’s Prayer and learned the 23rd Psalm.

He was very fair and had a sense of

h u m o u r. W h e n somebody put a dead rat in his desk when I was in grade 7, he picked it up by th tail and threw it back at us.

He never mentioned it a g a i n e i t h e r. H e allowed Mr. “Ice” Saunders to make a slide for us to play on in the winter and he monitored us at recess so that no bullying took place.

How anyone could say anything bad

about him as a teacher or a principal is hard to imagine.

I can remember one thing for certain. Miss Emery gave me the strap when I was 6 years old on my first day of school for writing my name on my desk. Mr. Shoup never gave anybody nor my siblings the strap while he was my teacher.

Ministry Seeks Public’s Help in Shot and Abandoned Moose on Highway 101 The Ministry of Natural Resources is seeking the public’s help to identify the person or persons responsible for shooting and abandoning a moose on Highway 101, west of Timmins.

On September 28, 2013, a concerned motorist contacted the m i n i s t r y ’s T I P S reporting line about a yearling bull moose that was lying on the north side of Highway 101, one kilometre east of the Groundhog

River. Conservation officers determined that the moose had been killed with a firearm. The firearm season for hunting moose does not open in the area until October 5, 2013.

It is believed that the moose was killed during the morning of September 28, 2013.

Letters to the Editor I am responding to the letter submitted to the Chapleau Express by Bill McLeod. I, too, attended Chapleau Public School under the principalship of J.M.Shoup. Also, I taught my first year under J.M. Shoup.

I did not

“witness” any cruelty” or “child abuse” during these years.

When I was teaching there. (1951-52). J.M. Shoup was encouraging and helpful. I have nothing but praise for his leadership.

I feel angry and quite sad that Bill McLeod found it necessary to malign the three teachers he named. None of these people are alive today

Letters to the Editor Thank you for the nice remembrance of my Grandma Min Blackburn (in Chapleau Moments) last month. I remember spending a lot of time with her in the United Church basement at the drop in centre and rummage sales upstairs.

With her and Grandpa's house on Aberdeen Street so close to the Cedar Grove Lodge site I spent a lot of time playing there in the summer of 1978 when it was being built.

OBITUARY Michel Trépanier (1941-2013) The family announces with sorrow his death at Au Château, Home for the Aged in Sturgeon F a l l s , We d n e s d a y , September 25, 2013 at the age of 71 years.

Born in Montréal, September 28, 1941, son of the late Laurio and of the late Rebbeca (née Major) Trépanier. Predeceased by his sister Edna Davis (late Merle). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his cousins Raymond Trépanier (Claire), Laurie Trépanier, Gabrielle Désormiers (Louis Roy), predeceased by his cousin Jeannette Paulin (Edward) all of Sturgeon Falls, and by his nephews Dan (Gerlinda Bernhardt-Davis) of Peterborough, Peter Davis of Vancouver, late Kevin Davis and niece Diane Davis of Barrie.

Michel lived in Chapleau for 25 years where he attended grade school and worked for the CPR. He then moved to North Bay where he worked for Edi-Cord on Lakeshore Drive specializing in dictating machines and also owned a radio repair shop. Michel was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23, North Bay. The family will receive friends at the Théorêt Bourgeois Funeral Home, Sturgeon Falls, Friday, October 4 after 10 a.m. until funeral service time at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. www.theoretbourgeois.com

School nurse Mrs. Elsie Wilkinson described as "most valuable cog in the health machinery" of Chapleau

Chapleau Moments by Michael J. Morris Mrs. Elsie Wilkinson did her work as school nurse "so quietly" that many did not realize her "supreme importance" in the community.

"With perfect organization she operates so smoothly and efficiently that many hardly realize her presence. A system that does a marvellous task with one bit of self advertising, is functioning daily in our midst," J.M. Shoup, principal of Chapleau Public School, wrote in his In the School Column in the Chapleau Post in 1948.

Elsie McKinnon arrived in Chapleau in 1915 to become Matron at the Lady Minto Hospital which had opened in 1914.

She married Dr. Steve Wilkinson, and after he died she became nurse at the public school, Chapleau High School and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic

School for many years.

She made the rounds each week during the school year.

I remember Mrs. Wilkinson well as she was a great friend of Lil (Mulligan) M o r r i s , m y g r a n dmother, and she often visited at my grandparents' home on Elgin Street. I also caddied for her, Mrs. George Fife and my grandmother when they played a round on Ladies' Day at the golf course. I think I carried one club.

My cousin, Michael McMullen recalls that he earned his "first real money" from Mrs. Wilkinson when he mowed the lawn at her home on Beech Street for 25 cents each time. That was about 1953.

In his column 'In the Schools' Mr. Shoup noted that such vast improvements in student health are observed that one almost fears to report

for fear of one be too hasty arriving at decisions and then having to wait anxiously with fingers crossed if disease strikes.

Epidemics, which took their toll in the early years of Chapleau had largely been eliminated by 1948. Mrs. Wilkinson had her records and every child was "religiously vaccinated, inoculated and T.B. patch tested with a x-ray follow-up when necessary."

Every school pupil was regularly weighed and height taken and progressive records kept, the article said, adding that the growing child whose weight remains stationary or drops is at once the concern of the nurse and family doctor.

"Cod liver or Vitamin tablets, on the nurse's recommendation are supplied by the Red Cross and a smooth distribution is carried out so that no one is missed."

School attendance had improved marvellously by 1948, due apparently to better student health. Many rooms ran for days with a perfect attendance.

Under Mrs. Wilkinson's direction, the system was so efficient that the big task was to check carefully the new

W h i l e Manitouwadge and Pic Mobert will be voting in a different constituency in the next federal election, Hughes said the report changes nothing for this parliament and plans to continue working for the communities and people she was sent to parliament to represent. “ I a m i n Manitouwadge this week and it will be business as usual,” said Hughes.

The MP noted that the only real problem she sees is the placement of Pic Mobert and White River into different constituencies.

“I think this should be addressed by the commission when they do this exercise next,” said Hughes.

“The one item that should be fixed is to keep White River and Pic Mobert in the same constituency since they are connected on so many fronts that it only makes sense.”

Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services.
