Checkmate! Sacré-Coeur students benefit from online chess

W

ith the implementation of measures to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, staff at École Sacré-Cœur (Chapleau) are constantly exploring new ways to offer educational extracurricular activities to students.

Thus, through the use of the Chesskids platform, the school has switched the format of its chess club so that it can operate online. Thanks to this shift to a digital chess platform, students can now access a wide range of resources and participate in tournaments without leaving the school while respecting the social distancing measures. This is a winning practice to be continued in the years to come.

Horwath urges Ford to ready vaccine roll out for kids as Pfizer files for Health Canada approval

fficial Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is elated that Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for kids age five to 11 has been submitted for Health Canada approval — and said that means there’s no time left to waste in releasing a plan to get all eligible kids in Ontario vaccinated quickly.

Horwath wants the COVID-19 vaccine added to the existing list of student vaccines, alongside shots students must

get, like measles and mumps vaccines.

“Parents are anxious to get their littles ones vaccinated so they’re protected — and there is real relief and excitement about that their turn is coming soon,” said Horwath. “But what they don’t have, and what they should have, is information from the Ford government about how it’s going to roll out.

UCFO Boutique Offering Handmade Products To The Community

The Chapleau UCFO women have a boutique. This boutique allows them display and

sell their handmade products. These are mostly woven items, but some are also knitted, crocheted, embroidered, and sewn items. You will find things such as blankets, tablecloths, placemats, slippers, mittens, scarves, baby wool sets, woolen socks, greeting cards and the list goes on. This is the reason we decided to put “featured items” every month in the newspaper and on our Facebook page so you will know what is available.

For the month of October, the features items are slippers and socks as the wintry weather is upon us. Slippers come in assorted styles, colors, and sizes. Some are knitted with "Phentex" and others with soft wool. There are slippers with or without soles, boot style, in solid, mixed, or

striped colors. As for socks, they are mostly knitted with heels, but some do not have them.

We are always available if you want to visit the boutique. We are certain that you can find that unique item or gift. Otherwise, it is also possible to purchase a gift certificate. The store is located at 40 Birch Street (basement of the post office - side door). There is normally someone there on weekday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. If you plan to visit, it is best to call the center first at 705-860-3033 or Rachel at 705-864-0969 or leave a message in Messenger to make sure there is going to be someone there. Since we have no employee for the store, we cannot guarantee someone there all the time. We apologize for the inconvenience!

Free Flu Shot Available to all Ontarians in November

Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones This Season To keep Ontarians healthy this flu season and prevent unnecessary visits to the hospital during the fourth wave of COVID-19, the Ontario government is launching one of the largest flu immunization campaigns in the province's history, with the flu shot available to all Ontarians starting in November.

“Our government is prepared for flu season and is launching an even larger flu shot program this year to keep Ontarians healthy as we continue to respond to COVID-19,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “It is safe to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot at the same time, so if you're receiving your flu shot and still have yet to receive a first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, now is the time.”

Last year, uptake of the flu vaccine by Ontarians was the highest in recent history. Building on this success, Ontario is investing over $89 million this year to purchase over 7.6 million flu vaccine doses, which is 1.4 million more doses than last year. This

includes a total of 1.8 million doses specifically for seniors.

To protect the most vulnerable, Ontario's initial supply of flu vaccine was prioritized for long-term care home residents and hospital patients beginning in September, and flu shots are now available for seniors and others most at risk for complications from the flu. Starting in November, the flu shot will be available for all Ontarians through doctor and nurse practitioner offices, participating pharmacies, and public health units.

To further improve access and convenience to the flu shot and based on demand in recent years, pharmacies will receive approximately 40 per cent of the allocated doses, up from 36 per cent last year.

“The annual flu shot is the best defence against the flu this season,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health. “As we head into the fall and begin gathering indoors more often with family and friends, it is even more important to get your flu shot, in

addition to following public health measures, to protect yourself and those around you.”

Each flu season, Ontario receives its supply of flu vaccine in multiple shipments from manufacturers over several months starting in mid- to late September based on the schedule negotiated between the federal government and manufacturers. Distribution and the ability for locations in Ontario to re-order additional supply of flu vaccine are based on the timing of shipments from manufacturers and the replenishment of the provincial supply. Ontarians are encouraged to be patient as it may take time for shipments to arrive to their local flu shot locations.

To help stop the spread this fall, Ontarians should continue to follow COVID-19 public health measures and advice in public settings, including wearing a face covering indoors, frequent handwashing, and maintaining physical distance from those outside their household.

Bridging the great divide with a "Good Morning Chapleau" travelling on my tricycle while growing up in the community

I moved to Cranbrook, BC in 1989 to take a position on the faculty of College of the Rockies, and have stayed by here after retiring.

Before the Chapleau High School 90th anniversary reunion festival in 2012 I was last home in 2001 for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Chapleau, invited by the council of the Since I started writing Chapleau day as a former reeve (mayor) and the Moments over 12 years ago. He is the only Ontario premier in history to threaten to use the constitutional 'notwithstanding clause' if things don't go his way. Either he is repeating the same mistakes over and over again because he is not learning from his experiences, or worse, he is showing that he just doesn't really care about the average Ontario family or small business.

Ontarians deserve so much better than this.

LOUIS-HÉMON Boutique des doigts de fées

Du vieux nouveau au Centre C'est en août 2021 que le Centre culturel Louis-Hémon s'est fait offert une édition du livre de MariaChapdelaine qui date de 1921. Notre ami Joseph Gagné nous en a fait le don. Ce livre lui a été remis par un grand ami. Cette copie du livre a circulé dans sa famille en France avant de se retrouver maintenant ici à Chapleau. Le livre a une place toute spéciale dans notre « show case » à l'entrée du Centre. Nous sommes très reconnaissants de ce cadeau. De plus, le Centre culturel Louis-Hémon a reçu au printemps dernier une collection d'art fait par l'artiste Jean-Paul Lemieux. Des amis de Luc et Natalie Tessier ont communiqué avec lui parce qu'il croyait que leur collection avait une place spéciale dans notre Centre.

Cette collection avec des peintures

inspirées du livre de Maria Chapdelaine écrit par Louis-Hémon aura une deuxième vie dans notre Centre. Les tableaux seront exposés en permanence dans notre Centre culturel. Lorsque les choses seront retournées à la normale (ou presque) le Centre tiendra une journée porteouverte pour que la communauté puisse venir voir ce livre ainsi que ces beaux tableaux. Les membres du Conseil d'administration aimeraient remercier Joseph Gagné pour ce livre très spécial, ainsi que Pierre et Madeleine Hurtubise pour leur don généreux de ces merveilleux tableaux.

Ces pièces d'art et cette copie du livre de Maria Chapdelaine seront appréciées par la communauté, les touristes et autres gens pour des années à venir.

Les dames de l’UCFO de Chapleau ont une boutique locale. Cette boutique leur permet d’exposer et de vendre leurs produits faits à la main. Ce sont majoritairement des articles tissés, mais il y a aussi des articles tricotés, crochetés, brodés et cousus. La liste d’articles est quand même longue : couvertures, nappes, napperons, ensembles de laine pour bébé, pantoufles, mitaines, foulards, bas de laine, cartes de souhaits et la liste continue. C’est la raison pour laquelle nous avons décidé de mettre des « articles vedettes » à chaque mois dans le journal et sur notre page Facebook pour vous donner la chance de savoir ce qui est disponible.

Pour le mois d’octobre, nous présentons les pantoufles et les bas étant donné que le temps froid est à nos portes. Les pantoufles sont de divers styles, couleurs et grandeurs. Il y en a tricoté avec de la laine « Phentex » et d’autres avec de la laine douce. On y trouve aussi des pantoufles avec des semelles, ou styles chaussons,

des couleurs unies, mélangées ou à rayures. Pour ce qui est des bas, ils sont surtout tricotés avec des talons, mais certains n’en ont pas.

Nous sommes à votre disponibilité si vous voulez venir voir la boutique. Nous sommes convaincues que vous allez trouver cet article ou cadeau unique.

3 childhood health habits we should carry into adulthood

(NC) There is an old saying that old habits die hard. It may not apply to our childhood health routines, when life felt simple and our family looked after our well-being, but maybe it should.

Here are three childhood-inspired health habits that could serve us well in adulthood.

Baby soft skincare Not all of us are blessed with babysmooth skin, but we can certainly try to preserve our precious glow by taking a few notes from the

kid's playbook. Always wash your face before bed, be sure to apply sunscreen before you go out, keep hydrated and remember that simple, unscented soap is sometimes all you need for cleansing.

Regular vaccinations Thanks to our parents, most of us were immunized at a young age against vaccine-preventable diseases like the measles or chicken pox. But vaccination isn’t just for kids. Immunity from childhood vaccinations may wear off over time and as we age, so getting a booster dose can increase our immunity to provide the best protection.

There are also diseases that are more common in adults, even healthy ones. This is why additional vaccines are needed as we get older.

Remember, staying up to date on your shots helps protect you and those around you.

As I travelled by Charles W. Collins Stores perhaps J.G. "Jiggs" Goldstein or Frank Coulter would be in the window getting the store ready for the day and I would wave and say hello. I might run into Ed Downey, the local pharmacist and of course A.J. Grout, the president of Smith and Chapple Ltd., always in a hurry but he took time to say hello.

As I headed on to the bridge Mrs. Hong might be in front of the Boston Cafe, and maybe if I was real lucky, on my way home I would stop to play with her son Harry ("Boo") and have some of her famous Boston cream pie.

Quite honestly arriving at Maw and Grandpa's house opened up a whole new world for me. The CPR station was on their side of town -the departure point when we left town. There was no highway until 1949, and until the 1950s, the built up area of Chapleau pretty well ended at Queen Street. I could head off to play in a `different 'bush than the one across from home on Grey

Street.

And yes, trust me, it was different. Imagine years later when I returned home and taught at Chapleau High School (the new school) I was spending my days in the bush where I had played as a child.

To a little boy my travels around Chapleau on my tricycle so many years ago now were truly great moments because of the people I met along the way. These were people who had carved Chapleau out of the wilderness, survived diseases and the Great Depression, served in World War I, World War II and were building a better place for their families.

The greatest resource any community has is its people, and let me give you one example that exemplifies the kind of people who have lived in Chapleau. One day I was chatting with Frank Coulter, who has just completed serving 18 years on the public school board. I asked Frank why he had chosen to serve so many years. Frank replied simply: ``Because Mr. Shoup told us we had a duty to serve, and this was one way I could.`` (Mr. J. M. Shoup served in World War I and World War II and was the longtime principal of Chapleau Public School.)

A duty to serve! Enough said. A great community! I hope to attend the 100th anniversary reunion of Chapleau High School in 2022.

Ontario Reinvesting $1.5 Million In Local Crime-Fighting Partnerships The Ontario government is reinvesting $1.5 million in cash and proceeds seized from criminals to help local partners fight back against crime and victimization that threaten their communities. Funding through the Civil Remedies Grant Program is being made available to law enforcement agencies and community partners for 18 community projects focused on helping victims of crime and strengthening local capacity to prevent intimate partner, family, and gun and gang violence.

“Our government is committed to strengthening every available tool, including civil forfeiture, to help police, prosecutors and local partners confront and dismantle the criminal networks that prey on our communities,” said Attorney General Doug Downey. “Crime should never pay, and these seized funds will help communities support victims of crime and fight back to break the cycle of offending.”

The initiatives funded this year will: · use investments in mobile surveillance to help fight the current drug crisis in rural and remote Northern First Nations communities · help keep youth off the streets by helping improve wellness, safety and positive decisionmaking to reduce criminal behaviour and victimization · support people experiencing victimization due to crime through mental health crisis services, specialized care and support, and education and training opportunities · provide community legal assistance to First Nations people who are hesitant to use outside legal supports Changes to strengthen the Civil Remedies Act passed under the Smarter and Stronger Justice Act allow personal property, such as cash or cars used by criminals for illegal activities, to be forfeited without a court order in cases where no interested person disputes the forfeiture.

Eligible applicants for the Civil Remedies Grant Program include Ontario and First Nations Police Services, not-for-profit groups, community agencies and Indigenous communities and organizations that help victims of crime or help to prevent crime.

More individual donations made to the NDP than all other parties combined

NDP fundraising tops $2 million with an average donation of just $29 The Ontario NDP has raised more than $2 million in 2021 so far — just $29 at a time, nearly 70,000 times.

Internal numbers show the Ontario NDP's fundraising for 2021 hit $2,001,338.60 at the end of September. Incredibly, the average donation to the NDP was just $29.18. With months left to go in the year, the party has received a whopping 68,591 individual donations — more than all other donations to all other parties in Ontario combined.

“Day after day, Doug Ford charges his buddies $1,500 a pop to golf or have lunch with him,” said Ontario NDP Provincial Director Lucy Watson. “In total contrast, 70,000 times so far this year, Ontarians have sent us small, incredibly meaningful donations. These folks share Andrea Horwath's vision for a government that's finally in it for everyday families, and we're so excited to be building this movement with them.”

The NDP's internal numbers include

donations under $200 — which are not included in Elections Ontario reporting, thanks to changes by the Doug Ford government.

Elections Ontario's public reporting shows that the Ontario Liberal Party has raised just $600,000 from 3,300 donations in 2021 so far. Ford's PC Party raised $5 million from only 8,482 individual donations.

The Ontario NDP paused its fundraising efforts during the federal election campaign.

Pourquoi il faut créer des mots de passe robuste pour chacun de nos comptes

(EN) Assurer sa sécurité en ligne n’est pas chose facile, alors que nous gérons plusieurs comptes numériques, que ce soit sur les réseaux sociaux, nos comptes bancaires ou notre compte de messagerie électronique. C’est pourquoi il reste essentiel de créer des phrases et des mots de passe complexes.

En fait, puisqu’ils sont notre première

défense contre les cybercriminels, ils doivent être robustes pour bien assurer notre sécurité en ligne. Un mot de passe est un peu comme un gardien qui assure la sécurité à une barrière. Dans vos comptes et appareils, vous stockez beaucoup plus de renseignements et de données personnelles que vous le pensez, vous avez donc besoin d’un « gardien » solide pour les protéger.

Les mots de passe sont formés d’une suite ininterrompue de symboles et de chiffres. Quant aux phrases de passe, elles peuvent contenir des espaces et forment une phrase ou une combinaison de mots choisis au hasard, ce qui les rend pratiquement impossibles à percer. Pour profiter d’une meilleure sécurité, il est préférable d’utiliser une phrase de passe.

Pour créer une phrase de passe robuste: -Utilisez au moins 4 mots et 15 caractères.

-N’utilisez pas de citations populaires et choisissez les mots au hasard.

-N’utilisez pas des renseignements personnels

comme votre nom, le nom de votre animal de compagnie, votre numéro de téléphone ou votre adresse.

-N’utilisez pas la même phrase de passe pour accéder à plusieurs comptes.

Pour créer un mot de passe robuste: -Créez un mot de passe qui compte au moins 12 caractères si le site ou le compte le permet.

-Utilisez une combinaison de lettres minuscules et majuscules.

-Utilisez au moins un chiffre.

-Utilisez au moins un symbole comme !@#$%^&*.

-N’utilisez pas des renseignements personnels comme votre nom, le nom de votre animal de compagnie, votre numéro de téléphone ou votre adresse. Les renseignements personnels facilitent la tâche des cybercriminels qui tentent de pirater vos comptes.

-N’utilisez pas le même mot de passe pour accéder à plusieurs comptes.

Les soins virtuels améliorent l'accès et l’efficacité du système de santé

(EN) La pandémie de la COVID-19 a entrainé de nombreux défis, mais elle a également conduit à l'innovation. Le développement de la télésanté et l’augmentation spectaculaire des moyens de surveillance médicale à distance sont l’un des exemples les plus marquants de cette nouvelle adaptation.

Un récent sondage auprès des Canadiens a démontré que plus de la moitié des personnes qui avaient un rendez-vous chez le médecin, et qui ont subi un retard ou une annulation en raison de l'épidémie du coronavirus, l’ont remplacé par une consultation téléphonique ou vidéo en ligne. Un pourcentage similaire de gens ont indiqué être confortable à continuer d'interagir de cette façon

avec des professionnels de la santé.

Pour les personnes atteintes de maladies chroniques nécessitant des examens réguliers, la pandémie a entrainé d'autres défis : une fois encore, la technologie a offert des solutions.

Un exemple concret: parmi les 300 000 Canadiens atteints de diabète de type 1, un grand nombre doivent faire surveiller leur taux de glucose régulièrement par leur spécialiste. Cependant, les visites en personne (en particulier pendant la phase initiale du confinement) ont été beaucoup plus difficiles sur un plan logistique, et présentaient également un risque d’exposition au virus.

Heureusement, les diabétiques équipés de la dernière technologie de surveillance du glucose en continu (SGC) n’ont qu’à appuyer un bouton pour accéder à leur taux de glucose actuel. Les systèmes SGC tels que le Dexcom G6 utilisent un petit capteur portable qui mesure le taux de glucose jusqu’à toutes les cinq minutes, et envoie les données à un récepteur ou à une application pour téléphone intelligent.

Ce qui rend ces appareils uniques, c’est leur système d’alerte permettant de prévenir et inciter les utilisateurs à agir lorsque leur taux de glucose approche des seuils élevés ou bas. Ils peuvent également partager leurs données de glycémie en temps réel avec les membres de leur famille ou leur médecin. « Éviter que les patients ne se retrouvent avec un taux de glucose très bas permet d’améliorer nettement leur qualité de vie, mais également leur productivité en général. Ce système peut prévenir des situations graves et limiter le besoin de soins d’urgence ou d’hospitalisation potentielle. Cela permet au système de santé de réaliser de grosses économies», explique l’endocrinologue, Dr Akshay Jain.

Toutefois, malgré cette opportunité d’amélioration en soins de santé et de réduction des coûts, toutes les provinces n’offrent pas une couverture pour cette technologie. Bien que de nombreux assureurs privés offrent une couverture, il existe une inconsistance dans la couverture de santé publique pour les systèmes SGC. Il y a des différences entre les provinces ainsi qu’entre les types de systèmes de surveillance disponibles.
