Donor commits $60,000 to Chapleau General Hospital Foundation

T

he Chapleau General Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce a $60,000 donation from an anonymous donor through the Sybil Anne Brake Fund of the Ottawa Community Foundation.

The donor was inspired to contribute to health care in the Chapleau area after watching the TVO documentary The Doctor Can See You Now, featuring Dr. Doris Mitchell.

The documentary explores Dr. Mitchell's journey to becoming a doctor through her studies at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, what

it was like coming back to her home community to work, and the challenges faced by rural, northern health care providers.

Our plan is to use the donation to establish a Grow Your Own fund. Our main focus will be on staff recruitment and retention, particularly assisting local people who are currently pursuing, entering, or considering a career in a health care field. The goal will be to support them so they can care for those in rural and isolated communities in the North, and ideally right here in Chapleau “One of our top priorities is to work on

staff recruitment and retention. We can't think of a better way to invest the $60,000,” said Chapleau Health Services CEO Jérémy Stevenson.

Mayor And Council Recognize The Efforts Of Special People Delayed…not forgotten!

No, Council did not forget to honor those who deserve recognition for their efforts and activities. Normally this is part of the Canada Day celebrations at the waterfront. Not so this year, due to Covid-19, and we apologize. Time to make up for the delay.

This year, we present several awards; two people will receive the Buddy Swanson Volunteer Award, four Council Certificates of Appreciation and two Service Recognition Awards for the Fire Department.

"Buddy" Swanson Volunteer Award The Buddy Swanson Volunteer Award honors a lifetime Chapleauite, Keith Swanson, a former Town Councilor and full time volunteer.

The Award is presented to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the community over a period of years. Consideration is given to individuals who have served the community through non-profit or service organizations, made significant contributions to local programs or services, been a leader and innovator with community volunteers, have given of their time, knowledge and skills to achieve a goal for the community in spite of barriers or personal circumstances.

The first recipient for 2020 has a long history volunteering in Chapleau; a personal tendency which has grown significantly since her retirement. Parliament recently held an emergency debate on the violence directed towards the Sipekne’katik First Nation and Indigenous Fishing Rights. Days later the community of Neskantaga First Nation, which has operated under a boil water advisory for 25 years, was evacuated when all water was cut off due to an oily substance coming through the pipes. In both instances, federal governments have allowed issues to simmer for decades instead of rolling up their sleeves and getting down to work. As with most items delayed, the costs only mount as time passes.

The do-nothing approach rarely works and hasn’t in either of these situations. In 1999 the Supreme Court ruled that Mi’kmaq fisherman Donald Marshall, who had been charged with catching and selling eels, held a treaty right to fish, hunt, and gather in pursuit of a moderate livelihood.

21 years later those rights are at the centre of a dangerous dispute about lobster fishing in St.

Indigenous boats took to the water this year out of frustration with Department of Fisheries officials who took 18 years just to begin negotiations on what a regulated moderate livelihood fishery would be. That initial delay was compounded by a lack of action by the government in the years that followed.

Those are lost years for everyone and the frustrations that boiled over in early October are a direct result of government reticence to be involved in the process. Involvement in this case should also have defined a role for non-native fishers. Instead of leaving them to work it out for themselves – which did not go well at all – the government could have engaged with them to help frame regulations that allow all parties involved to benefit from a fishery that is focussed on sustainability. This is not to excuse the actions of those who attacked Indigenous fishers and their property, only to suggest the path to a functional relationship was never fostered by the regulatory and senior partner, the government.

Now that we have arrived at an avoidable crisis point, New Democrats are calling on the

That’s what has happened with the water system for the Neskantaga First Nation. Twentyfive years is a long wait time to address a boil water advisory. It’s no surprise the situation became worse. What’s sad is that the problem continues to fester despite the Prime Ministers’ promise to fix First Nation’s drinking water issues by March of 2021. While the pandemic might explain a small adjustment to the timeline, it’s clear the target won’t be met for other reasons.

It’s certain that situations like we are witnessing in Neskantaga would never be allowed to happen in Toronto or Vancouver. Yet, a generation of children in First Nations communities had to grow up without clean water thanks to the negligence of government. These are disheartening developments for those who hope for progress in the relation between Canada and Indigenous communities. They breed disillusion and stand in the way of reconciliation.

Le statu quo fonctionne rarement, et cette situation ne fait pas exception. En 1999, la Cour suprême a déclaré que le pêcheur mi’kmaq Donald Marshall, accusé d’avoir attrapé et vendu des anguilles, jouissait d’un droit issu de traités l’autorisant à pratiquer la pêche, la chasse et la cueillette afin de s’assurer d’un mode de subsistance convenable. Même si 21 années se sont écoulées depuis, ces droits se retrouvent aujourd’hui encore au cœur d’un dangereux litige concernant la pêche au homard dans la baie de la St. Mary’s.

Bien que la pêche autochtone au homard soit nouvelle dans cette région, elle n’est pas fortement implantée. Elle consiste en une poignée de bateaux, comparativement aux pêcheurs de homard commerciaux non autochtones qui

comptent pour 99 % de la flotte. Les bateaux autochtones ont été mis à l’eau cette année par des pêcheurs exaspérés par l’inaction des représentants du ministère des Pêches, lesquels ont mis 18 ans pour seulement amorcer les négociations sur la définition d’une pêche de subsistance modérée réglementée. Ce délai initial a été aggravé par l’inaction du gouvernement au cours des années qui ont suivi.

Ces années sont perdues pour tout le monde et les frustrations qui ont causé les débordements du début du mois d’octobre sont le résultat direct de la réticence du gouvernement à prendre part au processus. Une participation dans ce cas aurait consisté à définir un rôle pour les pêcheurs non autochtones. Plutôt que de les laisser à eux-mêmes pour régler la situation – ce qui s’est très mal passé – le gouvernement aurait pu travailler avec eux pour les aider à établir une réglementation permettant à toutes les parties concernées de tirer parti d’une pêche axée sur la durabilité. Cela n’excuse en rien les gestes de ceux qui ont attaqué les pêcheurs autochtones et leurs biens. Je constate seulement que la voie vers une relation fonctionnelle n’a jamais été encouragée par le principal partenaire responsable de la réglementation, c’est-à-dire le gouvernement.

Maintenant que nous en sommes arrivés à l’étape d’une crise évitable, les néo-démocrates demandent au gouvernement fédéral de déterminer clairement qui est responsable d’assurer la sécurité des pêcheurs sur l’eau avant que d’autres gestes de

violence ne soient commis. Nous demandons également une entente avec les communautés mi’kmaq pour déterminer ce qui constitue un « moyen de subsistance convenable », et que l’on permette au ministère des Pêches et des Océans de protéger les droits fondamentaux des pêcheurs mi’kmaq. Sans mesures de protection et sans connaissances, le problème va s’aggraver.

C’est ce qui s’est produit avec le réseau d’alimentation en eau de la Première Nation de Neskantaga. Vingt-cinq ans, c’est une longue période d’attente pour s’attaquer à la cause d’un avis d’ébullition de l’eau. Il n’est pas surprenant que la situation se soit aggravée. Le plus triste, c’est que la situation continue de s’envenimer malgré la promesse du premier ministre de corriger les problèmes d’eau potable des Premières Nations avant le mois de mars 2021. Même si la pandémie peut expliquer un léger retard, il est clair que la date cible ne sera pas atteinte pour d’autres raisons.

Il est certain que des situations comme celle dont nous sommes témoins à Neskantaga n’auraient jamais été tolérées à Toronto ou à Vancouver. Et pourtant, c’est toute une génération d’enfants des communautés de Premières Nations qui a dû grandir sans accès à l’eau potable, et cela, en raison de la négligence du gouvernement. Ces situations sont démoralisantes pour ceux qui espèrent voir la relation progresser entre le Canada et les communautés autochtones. Elles sont une source de désillusion et font obstacle à la réconciliation.

Non, le maire et les membres du Conseil n'ont pas oublié d'honorer ces gens qui méritent notre reconnaissance pour leurs efforts et leurs activités. Habituellement, nous décernons ces reconnaissances dans le secteur riverain dans le cadre des célébrations de la Fête du Canada. Cette année, cela fut impossible en raison de la COVID19 et nous vous prions de nous en excuser. Le temps est venu de rattraper le retard.

Cette année, nous décernons plusieurs prix. Deux personnes reçoivent le Prix Buddy-Swanson de reconnaissance du bénévolat, quatre autres reçoivent un Certificat d'appréciation de la part du Conseil, tandis que deux pompiers de notre service d'incendie sont aussi récompensés par des prix de reconnaissance.

Le chef adjoint Keith Friend reçoit la Médaille de pompiers pour services distingués en reconnaissance de ses 20 ans de loyaux services et de son dévouement à la sécurité du public canadien par un service exemplaire.

Consider, if you will, this scenario: BigBlue, a major automaker, is hit with a massive recall of thousands of recent model cars because the ratchet mechanism in the seatbelts is defective. Automobile safety authorities discover this because there have been so many people killed because they were ejected from the car in accidents. An investigation into the cause determines that the seatbelt mechanism was flawed because BigBlue design engineers forgot to include a tension spring.

What do you think would likely happen at the corporate head office level and to the head of the design engineering department? No doubt there would be an outpouring of public sympathy for the families who lost someone. Hopefully also a genuine expression of sorrow and regret by the CEO of BigBlue. And without question the director of design engineering would be removed from their position at the very least if not outright fired. As well, the manufacturer would almost certainly be subject to litigation in the courts.

Now consider a real life parallel scenario playing out right here in Ontario. As a result of the first wave of COVID-19, Ontario realized a terrible death toll in comparison to the rest of Canada. Since the spring, nearly 2,000 people in long-term care homes died from COVID-19.

Astonishingly this accounts for 75 per cent of all coronavirus deaths in the province. As well, over half of all care homes experienced an outbreak.

With so many resident deaths in Ontario long-term-care facilities during the pandemic, there was an outcry for a full public enquiry which would carry many investigative and regulatory powers. However, Doug Ford outright refused to heed such advice choosing instead to only authorize a commission investigation which has significantly reduced abilities and powers.

Thankfully, at least, Judge Frank Marrocco, the commission chair, stated he would not wait for the pandemic to end before releasing the long-term care commission's findings. The commission's interim report recently revealed the sickening fact that the Ford government completely ignored the vulnerability of people in long-term care as the COVID-19 virus swept in.

Upon learning this, Andrea Horwath stated that, for some reason, the revelation that a wave of

Ontario Weather Review: October 2020 Quiet month with Below-Normal Temperatures and Dry Conditions

Temperatures and Precipitation October temperatures were cooler, with anomalies ranging from -1 to -4°C compared to normal. The largest temperature anomalies were experienced in northwestern Ontario, from Lake of the Woods to Geraldton. On a daily scale, the summer-like temperatures of October 23rd in Southern Ontario really stood out. Among the several new single-day maximum temperatures records set on that day, the one in Kitchener-Waterloo (24.6°C) dislodged the previous record of 24.4°C that was set 100 years ago!

On the flip side, Timmins broke a 70-year standing record low minimum temperature for October 30th (-19.0°C), beating the old record of 11.7°C. Most of the province experienced drier-than-normal

conditions in October. Conditions were especially dry in the Northwest, where precipitation anomalies of -10 to -50% were widespread. The exception to the dry conditions is a wetter-thannormal band observed from Superior East/Manitoulin Island extending northeast to the Quebec border.

With cooler than normal temperatures, this month marked the return of snow squalls, winter travel advisories as many locations in northern Ontario had notable snowfalls. Locations such as Barwick, Thunder Bay and Geraldton received more than 10 cm above their normal values for the month.

Significant Events An overall quiet month across Ontario, with a few notable

events: October 12-13: Heavy Rain and Tornado in Northern Ontario A low pressure system moving across Lake Superior brought heavy rainfall to the northern shore of Lake Superior. General rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 mm were reported, with a few areas including Nipigon and Beardmore receiving upwards of 40 to 50 mm.

A tornado, originating over Eastern Lake Superior, came ashore in the evening of the 13th. Minor outdoor property damage was reported in Goulais River, located north of Sault Ste. Marie. The Northern To r n a d o e s P r o j e c t ( N T P ) a t Western University gave this tornado a preliminary rating of EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale October 16: Heavy Snow in Northern Ontario Brief but intense snow squalls off Lake Superior gave 10 cm of snow in 3 hours in Marathon. The snow also caused a significant reduction to visibility, and resulted in a number of motor vehicle accidents and the closure of Highway 17 between Marathon and Terrace Bay. Additionally, snow associated with a cold front caused a closure of Highway 17 west of Thunder Bay between Ignace and Shabaqua Corners due to poor visibility and driving conditions.

October 22-23: Major S t o r m a c r o s s Northeastern and Southern Ontario

A slow-moving low pressure system ushered in varying significant weather across northeastern and southern Ontario. In northeastern Ontario, a wintry mix of rain, snow and freezing rain was observed. Rainfall amounts ranging between 40 and 85 mm were reported, mainly for areas northeast of Georgian Bay. Snowfall amounts of 8 to 12 cm were reported for areas between Lake Superior Provincial Park and Timmins, and two and a half hours of freezing rain were observed at Chapleau Airport.

Southern Ontario experienced unseasonably warm temperatures, with a few areas breaking daily maximum temperature records for the 23rd. The cold front associated with the low pressure system resulted in a line of thunderstorms stretching from east of Georgian Bay towards Windsor, and eastward towards the Greater Toronto Area.

Large hail ranging from nickel-size to tennis-ball-size and damage to trees and downed power lines were reported in Grey and Simcoe Counties, and in Muskoka and Parry Sound. The NTP confirmed an EF0 tornado, with maximum wind speeds of 130 km/h, followed a path through Thornbury before entering Georgian Bay. Outlook for November After the cold weather at the start of the month there will be a few calmer days throughout the province, with above-normal temperatures expected into mid-month.

Temperatures for the month are trending toward near-normal overall, while there are indications that there could be above-normal precipitation for most of the province.

Province Increasing Direct Care for Long-Term Care Residents to Four Hours per Day New Commitment Will Make Ontario the Canadian Leader in Quality of Care for Seniors The Ontario government is increasing the hours of direct care for each long-term care resident to an average of four hours per day. This commitment will make Ontario the leader among Canadian provinces in the provision of care for long-term care residents. The announcement was made in advance of the release of Ontario's 2020 Budget on November 5, 2020.

Details were provided today by Premier Doug Ford, Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance, and Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care, at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga.

"I made a promise to long-term care residents, their families and their caregivers that we would deliver better care for our seniors," said Premier Ford. "Today, we are delivering on that promise and acting on the early recommendations of Ontario's Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission. By increasing the hours of daily direct care for residents, we will improve their quality of life and ensure they are more comfortable and safe."

This new commitment to improve quality of care includes: ! Average daily direct care of four hours a day per resident. Direct hands-on care is provided by nurses or personal support workers to support individual clinical and personal care needs. ! Hard targets set over the next four years to achieve this standard by 2024-25. Progress against these targets will be measured and reported regularly. ! Unprecedented changes to educate and recruit the tens of thousands of new personal support workers, registered practical nurses and regis-

tered nurses that will be required. As part of the province's COVID-19 Fall Preparedness Plan, the province is taking the first step by recruiting an additional 3,700 frontline workers for its health workforce.

"On Thursday, I'll introduce Ontario's 2020 Budget, the next phase of Ontario's Action Plan," said Minister Phillips. "It is a plan that will have three pillars. The first is protect, making good on Premier Ford's commitment to do whatever it takes to get through the pandemic.

Making Ontario the leader among Canadian provinces in terms of care for our loved ones is a vital part of the protect pillar and reflects our government's top priority ― ensuring the health of people as we continue to respond to COVID19."

The government will work in collaboration with its partners, including labour, education and training providers, as well as sector leaders, to deliver the significant changes to the long-term care sector required to deliver on its four hour per day commitment.

"Improving the quality of life and care for long-term care residents is at the centre of everything we do. And after decades of neglect by successive governments we will work with our partners and with leadership in the sector to transform how we care for our loved ones for generations to come," said Minister Fullerton.

"Although we will continue to make progress, these changes will not happen overnight, as we have to hire and train a great number of staff and build modern new facilities so our residents get the level of care they deserve."

The increase in average daily hours of care builds on supports recently announced for long-term care, including investing $1.75 billion over five years to increase long-term care capacity and spaces for seniors, as well as the government's commitment to build 30,000 new longterm care beds over 10 years. The government is also driving the development of new long-term care homes through the Accelerated Build Pilot Program, adding 1,280 beds by early 2022.

The government will release Ontario's 2020 Budget on November 5, 2020. The next phase of Ontario's Action Plan, Ontario's 2020 Budget will focus on protecting and supporting people and employers during the COVID-19 pandemic, while laying the foundation for the province's economic recovery.

Ontario’s long-term care homes employ over 100,000 staff across the province.

The province has announced $540 million to prepare long-term care homes for future waves of COVID-19, helping homes enhance infection prevention and control, support adequate staffing and manage operating costs.

The government announced $243 million in emergency funding for staffing, supplies and capacity, and $78.2 million to preserve frontline staff and maintain current levels of service provided for resident care and accommodation.

The government is providing a temporary wage increase effective October 1, 2020 to over 147,000 workers who deliver publicly funded personal support services, including an increase of $3 per hour for approximately 50,000 eligible personal support workers in long-term care.

Caring for your pandemic puppy in a new stage of life (NC) While many initially thought COVID-19 might result in a baby boom, the extra time spent at home has actually led to a different trend - the “pandemic puppy.” Since March 2020, Canadians have used their newfound home time as an opportunity to make their families a little bigger by adopting a pet.

As the end of 2020 approaches, these cute little puppies are now growing into gangly, but equally cute, dogs. And just as with human children, when these puppies start to enter their “teenage” years, their needs change and owners need to start considering new aspects of their care.

“Even though dogs grow up faster than humans, they still go through different life phases that require owners to adapt to their changing needs,” explains Dr. Juanita Glencross-Winslow, veterinarian for pet food company Royal Canin.

Below are three key things she recommends dog owners focus on when their pups are between six months and a year old.

Grooming: The type of dog you have will dictate how often they require grooming, but the sooner a dog is introduced to a routine, the more comfortable they will become with it. Not only will a groomer keep your canine looking their best, but they can also be the first line of defence against skin issues. Groomers will notice and alert you to changes to your pet’s skin and coat. If this happens, be sure to make an appointment to see your vet.

Training and socialization: During the first few months, it’s normal to chalk up bad

behaviour to being a puppy. But it’s important to instill good manners and obedience early on.

Puppies also need to learn how to interact with others, both people and dogs, without getting upset or overexcited. Whether you choose to join a physically distant puppy class or enlist the help of an expert, training and socialization are essential for your pup.

Independence: Your dog has been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with you over the last few months. But as adults go back to the office and kids to school, pets will once again be left alone during the day. This will be a big change for your loyal companion, so be sure to ease them into it. Start by positively encouraging them to go to their “den” or kennel where they feel safe and relaxed. Then begin leaving them at home for increasing intervals over a period of time. Be sure to leave some chew toys to help them relax and de-stress.

181 COVID-19 outbreaks in health care settings leaving 89 residents dead & more than 1,800 staff & patients infected in 6-wks, numbers way up across the board, warns Ontario Health Coalition The spread of COVID-19 in long-term care, retirement homes and hospitals is growing at an alarming rate. By every measure-- case numbers, number and size of outbreaks and death numbers which follow the former a few weeks later -- COVID-19 is spreading much more rapidly. Tracking from the period of September 18 to October 28, the Ontario Health Coalition released its most recent outbreaks report for health and congregate care settings. It is available here: https://www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca/index.ph p/report-tracking-of-covid-19-outbreaks-inhealth-care-settings-data-updated-to-october28/ The OHC reported 181 currently active outbreaks in health care settings: ● 97 active outbreaks in Ontario long-term care homes, which is more than double the number of active long-term care home outbreaks we found on September 18 (35 active outbreaks). ● 32 active outbreaks in hospitals ● 64 active outbreaks in retirement homes.

As of October 28, there were 33 currently active outbreaks in health care settings that we classified as “large” (10 cases or greater): ● 15 long-term care outbreaks ● 10 retirement home outbreaks ● 5 hospital outbreaks ● 3 outbreaks in other health and congregate care settings.

Since the beginning of the pandemic we

have found that the total number of people infected by COVID-19 in health and congregate care settings including staff and patients/residents is 13,813 as of October 28, having increased by 1,804 people or 13.1 percent in six weeks. This is more than three times the rate of increase the previous four weeks (midAugust to mid-September) when the increase was 3.8 percent.

The rate of increase among patients/residents that have been infected by COVID-19 in health and congregate care settings has also grown. By October 28 we have tracked a cumulative total of 8,149 patients/residents, an increase of 959 patients/residents in six weeks (since September 18) or 11.8 percent. This growth rate is more than four and a half times as what we had calculated between August 25 and September 18 (2.5 percent).

By October 28 we have tracked a cumulative total of 5,631 staff members infected

by COVID-19 in health and congregate care settings, or an increase of 832 staff in six weeks (14.8 percent). This is more than twice the rate that we calculated between August 25 and September 18 (6.0 percent).

The rate of increase for deaths of patients, residents, and staff in health and congregate care settings has more than doubled. The Ontario Health Coalition is deeply sorry to report that as of October 28, we found a cumulative total of

2,296 patients and residents deceased, up from 2,208 deceased as at September 18. The deaths among staff have not increased in this period.

That increase amounts to a heartbreaking 88 residents and patients over six weeks or an increase of 3.8 percent. This greater than what we calculated between August 25 and September 18 (1.5 percent). Deaths tend to follow infections by several weeks.

The Coalition reported remains deeply disappointed with the Ford government's failure to do anything substantive to address the staffing emergency in long-term care homes, to make them more resilient when the virus hits. They report hearing increasing numbers of stories from families of residents who are severely malnourished and dying of dehydration and lack of care. Families are once again shut out and residents are isolated in homes where staff, already scarce, are getting sick in alarming numbers. Residents are still being left with COVID-19 and woefully inadequate care, without hospitalization to get them care, even be it oxygen and comfort measures. It seems the whole focus of the pandemic response is to stop hospital ICUs from collapsing, but systematic, rigorous intervention to get cohorting and infection control measures happening at 1 or 2 cases, measures to get care levels up, respect for informed consent and provision of humane endof-life care --even just basic care for LTC residents --across the board are not happening.

Michael Mantha , député néo-démocrate d'AlgomaManitoulin, ont tenu une assemblée publique virtuelle mercredi soir avec des conseiller(e)s scolaires et des enseignant(e)s sur la situation critique de l’éducation en langue française dans le Nord de l’Ontario.

Les députés ont souligné le besoin urgent du gouvernement provincial d'agir pour faire face à la pénurie de personnel en éducation francophone, ainsi que pour réduire la taille des classes et pour fournir un environnement sûr aux étudiants et au personnel. « Doug Ford a beaucoup parlé, mais sans livrer la marchandise », a déclaré M. Mantha. « Alors que la deuxième vague de COVID-19 a déjà forcé la fermeture de classes dans plusieurs écoles francophones, les enseignant(e)s, les écoles et les conseils scolaires font l’impossible pour continuer à assurer le bien-être et la réussite de nos enfants », a dit M. Mantha.

« Les conseils scolaires et les écoles francophones de la région souffrent d’une pénurie chronique d’enseignants et de main d’œuvre qualifiée », a déclaré M. Bourgouin. « Alors que le ministre de l’Éducation se dit prêt à faire l’impossible pour sauver l’éducation en français, croit-il vraiment qu’on peut faire face à une crise avec des salons de l’emploi et des portails de recrutement comme il l’a annoncé dernièrement ? Ça n’a aucun sens », a dit M. Bourgouin.

MM. Mantha et Bourgouin ont accueilli trois panélistes : Mme Anne Vinet-Roy, présidente de l'Association des enseignantes et enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO), Mme Natalie Tessier, éducatrice et directrice à l'école Our Lady of Fatima à Chapleau, et M. Michel Seguin, conseiller scolaire du Conseil scolaire public du Nord Est de l’Ontario (CSPNE).

pour l’éducation en langue française dans la région. « On doit séparer les élèves en cohortes dans les écoles, mais on a des élèves de cinq différentes écoles dans les autobus scolaires de la région de Chapleau », a indiqué Mme Tessier. « Essayer de recruter et de retenir du personnel francophone c’est un défi dans le Nord et la pandémie n’a fait qu’empirer les choses », a dit M. Seguin. « Le ministre de l’Éducation aurait dû s’asseoir avec les partenaires en éducation pour rédiger un vrai plan, dès le moment où les écoles ont fermé en mars dernier. Si les écoles sont encore ouvertes, c’est grâce au personnel enseignant, aux travailleuses et aux travailleurs en éducation et aux communités scolaires, et non au ministre de l’Éducation. Il y a donc un grave manque de collaboration de la part du gouvernement. Le gouvernement projette délibérément une image de la situation en milieu scolaire, qui n'est pas du tout le reflet de la réalité » a déclaré Mme Vinet-Roy.

As a result of the investigation, a 24-yearold person, from Springwater, Ontario, was arrested and charged with the following: • Assault - Spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Chapleau, in December, 2020.

Province Proudly Promoting Ontario-Made Products to Spur Economic Recovery CME Program Helps Consumers Support Local Business and Manufacturing Jobs during the pandemic, whether it was making PPE or keeping supply chains strong. Let's all support them in turn and shop local."

Ontario's manufacturing sector is the economic engine of Canada, directly accounting for over 12 per cent of the province's economy, with nearly $300 billion in annual shipments and $200 billion in exports. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturers across the province stepped up to innovate by ramping up or shifting their production lines to produce more food, personal protective equipment, and other essential supplies. In September alone, an increase of 51,700 jobs pushed Ontario's manufacturing employment 17,000 jobs above pre-COVID levels.

In a recent CME survey, 73 per cent of Ontarians said they already try to purchase Canadian-made products and 56 per cent said they would try more often to purchase domestic goods. Since launching in July 2020, CME's SupportOntarioMade.ca website has registered over 4,600 products from over 1,200 local manufacturers. Over 150 retailers are also participating in the program. Products with the Ontario Made logo range from baby wipes to barbecues, and cosmetics to cars.

Consumers can easily find these made-in-Ontario goods in the new online, searchable directory at Support OntarioMade.ca. This includes products that are made in local communities, participating retailers and company profiles.

"When you support our homegrown manufacturers, you are doing more than simply shopping — you are supporting Ontario jobs, Ontario businesses and Ontario families," said Minister Fedeli. "We all have a role to play in our economic recovery. By purchasing the quality products that are synonymous with Ontario Made, you are supporting your family, friends and neighbours and accelerating our economic revival today and into the future."

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME), with the support of the Ontario government, is launching a new Ontario Made Consumer Directory. This guide will make it easier for shoppers to find made-in-Ontario products, while supporting local businesses and manufacturers. By promoting Ontario-made products, this initiative will support good-paying jobs and set the province down the path to further growth, renewal and long-term economic recovery.

The announcement was made today by Premier Doug Ford, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and Dennis Darby, President & CEO of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, at Napoleon, in Barrie.

"As local manufacturers have proven time and time again during this pandemic, they can make anything. Ontario-made products are second to none in quality and excellence," said Premier Ford. "That's why I'm proud to support this new CME campaign to encourage Ontarians to look for the 'Ontario Made' label when shopping. Our manufacturers were there for us

and use the Ontario Made logo. Regional webinars where manufacturers can learn more about the program will be hosted by CME to increase the volume and variety of registered Ontario Made products for consumers.

Building on Ontario's Action Plan: Responding to COVID-19, the province's $30 billion response to the global pandemic, the government remains committed to providing necessary resources to protect people's health and support people, families, workers and business owners. Ontario will release the 2020 Budget and the next phase of Ontario's Action Plan on November 5, 2020.

Funding for Ontario Made is made possible through the $50 million Ontario Together Fund.

Since its launch, the Support OntarioMade.ca website received over 25,000 visits and over 3,800 subscriptions to the Ontario Made newsletter.
