CHS100th Reunion Committee News
T
he C H S E S C H S 100th Reunion Committee is hard at work getting ready for the event of the summer. Still considering whether to attend or not? Check out the perspective from David Freeborn, currently residing in Calgary but still calling Chapleau home. What better way to meet literally everyone, than to handle the bar….!! This was my mindset over the last reunion as I worked Long Term multiple shifts in all Forecast venues, which gave me Thursday the opportunity to say High 2 hello to old friends, Low -4 shake hands with those Friday whom I hadn't seen in High -1 decades and in a fashion Low -3 similar to speed dating, Saturday High 2 Low 0 Sunday High 2 Low -3 Monday High -3 Low -13 Tuesday High -6 Low -7
and meet literally everyone in the venue for a few minutes. It was fantastic… This became a family affair as my parents and sibling worked similar shifts and had the same experiences. Although we were working, or should I say volunteering, it certainly felt like we were part of the party, listening to the great tunes over several genres, having some great conversation, making people smile with a refreshment, and of course exchanging a few good- natured insults with those close enough to us, for that to be appreciated…all in good fun. Funny story, on the last night of the event, I was working at a particular venue that was outside of my own personal genre. Although I wasn't totally motivated by that work assignment, I ended up having the time of my life. In that venue, several of my older cousins were present, and their friends whom I had met offand-on, through my time in Chapleau and had not seen in years. I ended up alone behind the bar by 10 pm with no “beer runner” who would have been restocking the fridges. A bit of a disappearing act of sorts, I guess – I digress… I sold out in about an hour and then it became a one man show, as I had to close the bar repeatedly “to a host of booo's” while I hauled cases from cold storage to the fridge. Supply was going out so fast, that I was simply handing out refreshments from the case – brand became insignificant as those short bar closures created huge demand….I managed to serve everyone (repeatedly) who had waited patiently and eventually those booo's turned to a “Standing O” at the end of the night. I even managed to save myself a refreshment or two, as I was totally exhausted but what a night….phenomenal…! BTW – cousin Frosty
was my favorite customer, with cousin Keith a close second – I miss him. So, in 2022, I'm back behind the bar. I can't wait to see old friends and acquaintances, hopefully make a few people smile, while participating in the festivities, all in the spirit of volunteerism. I strongly encourage anyone able and attending the reunion to get involved, volunteer, work the bar, or help in any of the hundreds of tasks required to make this event a success. Believe me, you'll be an important part of the event and it won't impact the amount of enjoyment you will have…this I can guarantee. A huge thanks to David for sharing his experience with us. You don't want to miss this event - send your address to nadialee@gmail.com and please take a moment to check out our website at chsreunion.ca for all the latest information on the reunion. Looking forward to seeing everyone in 2022 - your CHS ESCHS Reunion Committee!
