Funding Available for Non-Profit Organizations in Superior East Region The Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation is a non-profit regional organization covering the Superior East Region. Over the years it has approved over $26 million in loans helping to create or maintain 2,919 jobs in the region. Over the past year it has also provided over $1 million in RRRF loans to assist small businesses through the pandemic.

Special programs such as the Covid Safety Protocol contributed a total of $40,522 in nonrepayable contributions to 11 businesses in the region. The Post Covid Professional Services program approved a total of 7 applications for

$28,386 in non-repayable funding.

The Superior East CFDC currently has funding available for non-profit organizations operating in the Superior East Region to assist them in recovering from the pandemic. The Regional Relief and Recovery Community Development Fund aims to help non-profit organizations in their efforts to recover from the affects of COVID-19. The program is open to First Nations, municipalities, economic development corporations or other non-profit community organizations. The program can provide up to $5,000 in non-repayable funding for

initiatives that support economic and social goals. Some examples include seminars or workshops, marketing, special events, moving to online, workplace modifications, protective personal equipment, etc. All projects must be completed prior to March 31, 2022. Michael J. Morris In 1963, after returning to Chapleau as principal of Chapleau High School, Dr. Karl A. Hackstetter spoke at the public school graduation ceremonies, directing his remarks at teachers, parents and students.

I found it interesting to reflect on Dr. Hackstetter's observations as reported by Margaret Costello in the Sudbury Star and think about their relevance to education in the 21st century. I will leave it to the reader to decide. I found it interesting to go back in time Dr. Hackstetter first taught at Chapleau High School from 1954 to 1957, left and returned as principal in the Sixties. Although he was

Referring to public school teachers, he said he felt they were more important than any others.

Dr. Karl A Hackstetter on "no kid glove treatment" for students entering secondary school in the 1960s "You (public school teachers) can still mold what is given to you -- your personal example is imitated. We of the high school are technicians, specialists in the field of education.

It is my sincere belief that your job is more difficult than ours. Also, if you fail, the consequences are more disastrous."

He also said it was rather sad that the high school teachers do not seem to have much in common with the public school teachers adding that when he suggested the two staffs meet together, he was told that such a meeting would be "frowned upon." In the almost 20 years I taught at Chapleau High School I do not recall a meeting with elementary school teachers.

Addressing parents, Dr. Hackstetter said (and remember this was in 1963), "today - both inside and outside of school - are in no way comparable with what confronted them when they started high school or a job."

He added: "This means that you have to insist on the control of homework. Do not let yourself be talked into 'we have no homework today.' This is never true. There may be no assignments for a particular day but there is always homework..."

He felt that weekends should be kept for recreation except for a couple of hours on Sunday night to prepare for Monday. “Remember," he told the parents, "you are educating with us and don't shrink from this responsibility. If you parents fail you will have ruined your child's future and can blame no one but yourselves."

To the students, Dr, Hackstetter told the Grade 8 graduates that. "the toughest part of your life starts in September. Today you will have to give an honest day's work when you come to high school. Laziness, disregard of discipline will not be given the kid glove treatment, and the sooner this is learned the better.

"Each one of you is just one of 250 next year. You must realize the 250 will pull together in one direction toward a better life, and don't you dare to slow down249 just because you don't want to pull hard. We would like you to remember that, we, who know a little bit about life, always have the best for you in mind. I hope you believe that." Quite a change in 2021.

When Dr. Hackstetter first arrived in Chapleau in 1954, there were about 120 high school students. About 10 years later, it had doubled and a new school was needed.

Today CHS has become Chapleau Elementary and Secondary School all housed in the CHS building.

Evelyn Lemieux was a CHS student in 1963 and shared some memories of the school

Dr Hackstetter far right leaving field at old CHS and Dr. Hackstetter as principal. Evelyn recalled that he was really strict but an excellent math teacher, adding "actually "I really liked him." She also noted that he was "fair, strict and a great teacher." I can second Evelyn's comments having been a student at CHS when Dr. Hackstetter first taught there.

"I remember in the fall all of a sudden he would take the whole school for a nature walk. I also remember once we wanted to go jogging for gym but we needed a teacher to go with us - he came with us and boy we jogged. I remember to this day I almost died. He wouldn't allow us to take a break." Actually Dr. Hackstetter became famous for his "walks" which usually meant leaving from the school on Pine Street, where the Chapleau Civic Centre is now, over to the golf course and back to the school -- non stop of course.

Charlie Purich, who in 1963 was referred to as 'the catalyst' of the hockey team said: "He was a great principal. He loved hockey and was a huge fan of CHS TEEM. He attended every game and would come over to the Redwood with us after the games. He was one of those "genuine" fans who never played the game but knew the value of sports and school. Even though he was a strict disciplinarian he was consistent with praise and students knew it was well meaning. The hockey team members were always inspired because of his interest."

Dr. Hackstetter taught me when I was in Grades nine and ten, and as I reflect back over the years and all the teachers I ever had, he was among the very best. The last time I visited with him was when he returned to Chapleau in the seventies in charge of a Ministry of Education reading van. I was teaching at CHS, and pouring myself a cup of coffee in the staff room with my back to the door when suddenly a voice from the past, instantly recognizable, shouted, "MORRIS" and I froze -- just like old times., but somehow I managed not to spill the coffee.

Since coming to power, Doug Ford has shown disdain and a deep-seated lack of respect for unions and their leaders. You might recall Ford's comments when negotiating with Ontario teachers in the spring of 2019. After question period and debate in the Legislature, Ford emerged from the House to speak to the press referring to teachers union leaders as 'thugs.' He said, “This is strictly from the union thugs, as I call them, the teachers' union, one of the most powerful unions in the entire country.” Thugs!? Really? When has resorting to name-calling ever enhanced professional negotiations?

In November, Ontarians turn their thoughts to our brave veterans who sacrificed so much for our freedom. We owe them a profound debt of service. Yet, when an injured Veteran living in Ontario accepts a Disability Award from Canada, the Ford government policy deducts the amount of the award from the basic benefits that the former soldier is entitled to for food and rent through Ontario Works (OW) and the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). It's a shameful failure that Ontario is honouring that debt with words and ceremonies alone while turning its back on the injured Veterans who are struggling with poverty and deserve better.

No Veteran should go to bed hungry at night or fear the loss of the roof over their head. These brave men and women were there for us when we needed them. But, just like that vendor from years ago, the Ford government no longer demonstrates appropriate respect for these veterans. Instead, Doug Ford has chosen to turn his back on them.

For some time now, the NDP has been calling on the Doug Ford government to stop clawing back provincial disability supports from injured Veterans who qualify for a federal Disability Award. It's time for Doug Ford to make this right by ending the clawback policy for Disability Awards.

Consider the advice of author Christine Szymanski, “When someone shows you their true colours, trust your instincts, and don't all of a sudden become colorblind.”

Ontario Supporting Indigenous and Emerging Artists New investment helping arts organizations and artists safely reconnect with their audiences during COVID-19 The Ontario government is increasing support for the province’s arts sector with a $5million grant program administered through the Ontario Arts Council. The funding will create more opportunities for Indigenous artists and arts organizations to reconnect with their audiences and recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and help new emerging artists across all disciplines during a pivotal stage in their careers.

“Ontario’s arts sector contributes significantly to our province, providing thousands of jobs for musicians, writers, painters, actors, dancers, stagehands and the many others working behind the scenes,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. “By supporting Indigenous artists,

Indigenous arts organizations and emerging artists through these new grant programs, our government is helping to broaden the cultural landscape by providing more opportunities for dynamic new artists whose extraordinary and unique work strengthens the social fabric of our province, making it an incredible place to live.”

This investment will provide funding through the following project-based grant programs: Indigenous Arts Support Program – $4 million in project grants will be available to Indigenous artists and arts organizations involved in a variety of disciplines including dance, literature, media arts, multi and inter-arts, music, theatre and visual arts, as they research, develop and create new work and engage with their communities.

Career Catalyst: Project Grants for New Generation Artists – $1-million grant program for professional artists, between 18 and 30 years old in any artistic discipline funded by the Ontario Arts Council. These $2,000 grants will support 500 individual artists with activities to help build career momentum as they recover

from COVID-19 pandemic-related challenges.

The Career Catalyst: Project Grants for New Generation Artists program is now open.

The application deadline for this program is December 16, 2021. Intake for the Indigenous Arts Support Program will begin in November 2021 and close in January 2022. More information about both granting streams is available on the OAC website.

This funding builds on the government’s 2020-21 emergency investment of $25 million to help artists and arts organizations overcome the pandemic, remain solvent and prepare for reopening their facilities, resume full programming and welcome back their visitors and audiences.

The Ontario Arts Council is an agency of the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries that provides grants to Ontario-based individual artists and arts professionals, ad hoc groups/collectives and organizations. Grants support a range of arts activities and disciplines.

Prior to the pandemic, the culture sector contributed more than $27.5 billion to Ontario’s economy and more than 288,000 jobs.

Chapleau Resident Charged With Break And Enter On November 2, 2021, at approximately 10:42 a.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a break and enter on Pine Street in the Town of Chapleau.

As a result of the investigation, Kyle PAQUETTE, 29 years-of-age, of Chapleau

was charged with the following: · Break, Enter a dwelling house with intent to commit indictable offence, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

T he accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on December 13, 2021 in Chapleau.

The cast included Margaret Rose Fortin, Phyllis Chrusoskie, David McMillan, Harry Pellow, Loraine LeClerc, Robert Glowacki, James Evans, Donna Veit, Mary Serre and Michael Leigh.

The school choir under the direction of Miss Joan Lee also performed. Soloist was Carmen Pilon while a duet was presented by Rita O'Hearn and Bill Kemp. Pianist was Alison McMillan. Choir members included Theresa

Donivan, Anne Marie Goldstein, Anne Lemieux, Shirley Potts, Madeleine Carroll, Gail Leon, Naomi Mizuguchi, Audrey Newman, Marion Pellow and Pauline Pilon.

Honour Secondary School Graduation diplomas were presented to Sadie Doyle, Phyllis Evans, John Futhey, Richard LeClerc and Gaetan Roussel, by Clarence Fiaschetti of the teaching staff, and the first CHS grad to return to teach at the school.

OPP Canines Strike A Pose For A 'Paw' Some Cause

Calendar Proceeds Support Charities

For more than 50 years, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Canine Unit handlers

and canines have been supporting frontline and specialized policing functions to keep Ontarians safe. Between providing assistance for search and rescue, tracking wanted persons, detecting narcotics, and searching for firearms, explosives and physical evidence, Canine Unit canines took time to put their best paws forward for charity.

In the sixth annual OPP Canine Unit calendar, canines from across Ontario show off their specialized skills and day-to-day commitment to community safety. Each month features a canine with a write-up identifying their specialty, their role and home location. For instance, two-year-old Conan of London shows off his search and rescue skills in June. In March's photo, you will see our newest training course graduate, Felix from Norfolk, climbing aboard the hovering helicopter with his handler. See Duke, a Malinois Cross from North Bay, tracking

All proceeds from the 2022 OPP Canine Unit calendar go to the OPP Youth Foundation and the Friends of The OPP Museum. The charities thank everyone for their generosity as last year's calendar sales raised more than $22,000 for these worthy causes. Each calendar costs $15 and can be purchased at the OPP Off Duty Shopp at oppshop.on.ca.
