Another home destroyed by fire

Fire strikes again. Another home was completely destroyed by fire on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Godfroy and Carole Pilote of Chapleau lost everything in the devastating fire.

total of 15 Veterans groups and a number of regimental associations representing former service members in Canada.

Despite their common goal – to help returned servicemen in need – t h e i r e ff o r t s w e r e fragmented and largely unsuccessful.

In 1925, an appeal for unity led to the formation of the Dominion

Veterans Alliance. The Legion was founded in November of that year in Winnipeg, Manitoba as The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Services League (BESL). It was incorporated by special Act of Parliament, Charter issued in July 1926.

Initially, the principal objectives of The Legion were to

provide a strong voice f o r Wo r l d Wa r I Veterans and advise the government on Ve t e r a n s ’ i s s u e s .

However, World War II brought an influx of new demands and The Legion increased efforts to help Veterans and returned service members, as well as those serving abroad.

To this day, even with numerous

changes over the years, including the adoption of our current name, the Royal Canadian Legion has never faltered in our efforts to improve the lot of veterans, ex-

service members and their families. It has been our principal objective since day one, and we will continue to work for it every day forward.

The Diocese of Moosonee is pleased to announce that a service in celebration of the

episcopal ministry of The Right Reverend Thomas A. Corston, Ninth Bishop of

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I belong to Operation Legacy, a group of members of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program dedicated to preserving Canada’s military heritage and teaching other young people how to carry on the remembrance message.

This year, The War Amps is celebrating a major anniversary. Ninetyfive years ago, First World War amputee veterans formed The Amputations Association of the Great Wa r . T h e n a m e w a s c h a n g e d t o T h e Wa r Amputations of Canada when Second World War amputees joined their ranks. These men later started the CHAMP Program to assist young amputees like me.

In addition to having had the privilege of learning about Canada’s military heritage from a young age, I also know what it is like to live without a limb – a strong bond that I share with war amputee veterans. Because of this, I feel it is my duty to ensure that the stories of war are preserved and its lessons never forgotten.

Operation Legacy is a commitment to preserving our national

military heritage, and by doing so, we honour the men and women who have fought for us – even given their lives – to protect our rights and freedoms. And by passing on the stories of horror that these heroes have endured, it reminds us that war is something we never wish to face again.

We remember that is better to choose peace over war and that standing up for what we believe in is what makes us Canadians.

Champs in Operation Legacy wish to spread this message not only to the adults whose parents perhaps lived through war, or left a war-torn country to come to Canada, but also our youth, as they will be the ones who need to pass on the remembrance to the next generation so that we ensure that the legacy of our veterans is never forgotten.

I encourage everyone – particularly young people – to learn more through The War Amps Military Heritage Series documentaries, which are available at a cost-recovery price at waramps.ca.

Bishop Corston, who has served the Church for 40 years, in three different dioceses, has announced that he will retire on December 31, 2013.

With a reduced population in the northeast and changes in t h e e c o n o m y, T h e Diocese of Moosonee, like many churches, is faced with financial challenges. Bishop Corston’s innovative and courageous leadership

has led to the unique solution of downsizing from the top. Under a Diocesan Transition Plan, The Diocese of Moosonee will not elect a new Bishop. Instead, the Diocese will transition to a Mission Area under the authority of Archbishop Colin Johnson, Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario.

M o o s o n e e ’s Transition Plan is unique in the Canadian Anglican Church and is being observed at both the Provincial and National levels of the Church. The Plan is generating a sense of excitement around the large Diocese, which stretches from the Cree territories of northern Quebec to Geraldton in the west and from Kashechewan to its southern boundary of Kirkland Lake through to

Chapleau.

The Plan, which has included the sale of unused buildings and properties, amongst other cost saving efforts, will reduce the operating costs of the Diocese of Moosonee, while not changing ministry in individual parishes. It is hoped that these savings will allow the Moosonee Mission Area to invest in new expressions of ministry in its vast territory.

Great excitement prevails in Chapleau on VE Day in 1945 with whistles blowing and church bells ringing Chapleau Moments by Michael J. Morris Ve r y g r e a t excitement prevailed in Chapleau on May 8, 1945 with the news of the unconditional surrender of Germany which became commonly referred to as Victory in Europe or "VE Day".

Each of these Chapleau "boys" received the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II come.

"Everyone was happy that at times it was hard to know whether to laugh or cry.

As if by magic flags appeared on house fronts.

"Schools were closed immediately and the children were excited as the older people."

A p e a c e celebration dance organized by the Canadian Legion was held with the Town Hall filled to capacity.

Later a VE Day celebration was held but a "very cold wind and snow" made outdoor activities impossible so they took place in the Town Hall.

Les Beeston was the master of ceremonies and a "carnival spirit was evident."

Speakers included Reeve Frank Edwards, Reg Thrush, Harry Searle (one of the main founders of Branch Number 5 and a World War I veteran), and Rev. H. W. Strapp, the minister at Trinity United Church.

A play "The Trial and Hanging of Hitler" was performed.

Following the celebration which included a treat of hot dogs, the children paraded to the Regent Theatre for a free show.

A Monster Dance was held in the To w n H a l l i n t h e evening.

Writing about V E D a y, m y a u n t Marion Morris, who had lost her brother, my father Flying Officer James Morris , who was killed on active service in the RCAF on July 16, 1943, noted in a letter to me many years later "parishioners of all faiths streamed into their churches -- no parade -- just

Thanksgiving for all the boys and girls in the services and prayers -joined together from all churches."

After VE Day, the Legion organized a S e r v i c e o f Thanksgiving at the Cenotaph. Children from all the schools attended as well as a huge number of citizens.

Speakers included Walter Steed, a World War I veteran and branch president at the time as well as Rev. J.H. Morris of St. John's Anglican Church (no relation) and Father Romeo Gascon, of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

Défis croissants pour les jeunes des exceptions à la règle, les diplômés des universités et des collèges ont tendance à obtenir de meilleurs emplois, ce qui fait de l’éducation un risque calculé. Compte tenu de l’explosion de la dette des étudiants et de l’augmentation considérable des droits de scolarité prévue au cours des prochaines années, l’éducation semble être un plus grand risque qu’autrefois.

Selon un rapport du Centre canadien de politiques alternatives, les frais de scolarité devraient augmenter de 13 % au cours des quatre prochaines années,

après une hausse trois fois plus élevée que le taux de l’inflation au cours des vingt dernières années. Le fait que la dette des étudiants s’accroîtra est déjà problématique, mais la réaction inefficace du gouvernement pour régler ce problème ainsi que le chômage persistant chez les jeunes qui rend si difficile le remboursement de la dette est très inquiétante.

Il faut que le gouvernement fédéral et ses partenaires provinciaux établissent un plan d’action pour s’attaquer aux problèmes de la hausse des droits de scolarité

et de la dette galopante des étudiants. Malgré les demandes répétées des néo-démocrates, le ministre de l’Emploi et du développement social est resté muet sur la question, et sans leadership fédéral, les provinces adoptent toujours la même position, soit la hausse des frais de scolarité.

Il semble que personne ne veuille l’admettre, mais si l’éducation poste secondaire devient exclusive au point où seuls les Canadiens bien nantis peuvent y avoir accès, nous préparons tout un choc pour notre économie et nous faisons en sorte que les divisions de

classe soient encore plus difficiles à éliminer. En outre, une telle situation ne fera qu’accentuer le chômage chez les jeunes.

Actuellement, le taux de chômage chez les jeunes est le double du taux national. Ici, en Ontario, seulement un jeune sur deux occupe un emploi rémunéré.

Le problème perdure, et pour trouver des solutions, il faudra faire preuve de créativité et mettre en place des politiques et des programmes particuliers.

People in Northern Ontario are too familiar with some of the biggest challenges faced by young people, especially when they relate to emp lo y men t. F o r many of our children this search will take them to urban centres.

In many instances they will have left for post-secondary education before seeking work. This

pattern is in no way new, but there are new wrinkles that are making it harder for young people right across Canada that need to be addressed.

The path to a better job usually runs through postsecondary education.

Although there are no guarantees and always exceptions to the rule, university and college graduates tend to get

the better jobs making education something of a calculated risk.

With the ballooning of student debt and tuition fees expected to climb considerably in the next few years it seems like more of a gamble than it has historically been.

According to a report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives tuition fees are projected to increase by 13% over the next 4 years after increasing at three times the rate of inflation for the past two decades. The fact that student debt will increase is problem enough, but the

government’s ineffective response to that and persistent youth unemployment that makes debt so difficult to overcome is worrisome.

What is needed is a plan for action from the federal government and their provincial partners that will address the problems of rising tuition and runaway student debt. Despite repeated calls from New Democrats, the M i n i s t e r f o r E c onomic and Social Development has been silent on the issue and without federal leadership the provinces are stuck in one

gear – raising tuition rates.

It would seem that it is something that no one wants to admit. If postsecondary education becomes so exclusive that only better-off Canadians can afford it we are setting our economy up for a shock and ensuring that class divisions become all the more difficult to break down. In addition to that it will only make youth unemployment problems worse.

Currently youth unemployment figures are running double the national average. Here in Ontario, only one in two young people have a paying job.

This is becoming a persistent problem that requires creative thinking as well as specific policies and programs.

N e w D e m ocrats are proposing a new tax incentive to benefit young people

and the businesses that hire them.

It is designed to encourage businesses to create new jobs for youth while helping them with the cost of training. Under the proposal, businesses would be eligible for up to $1,000 just for hiring a young employee and also for matching funds to train the employee.

The tax credit would also be targeted to address regional employment inequality by doubling it in parts of the country where youth unemployment is highest.

In an every-pennycounts world, measures like this might make the difference for young people who are held back most by opportunity.

It is clear that there is work to do to help our young people who are facing tough challenges. We need to ensure our colleges and universities remain accessible to

CMHA Events – What we've been up to so far…

An early, busy start was possible again this year, thanks to Mayor Byham and the town council, for having the ice ready early. During the second weekend of September, we started with a bang with our 2nd annual hockey school. Three highly qualified instructors

from the Sudbury RHP Training Centre helped 44 hockey players and 6 goaltenders improve their skills on and off the ice. It was just incredible to see such a big turnout for our town, which brought quite a positive impact on our young c o m m u n i t y. A b i g

thank you goes out to all our local coaches and young shooters for helping out all weekend on the ice with the RHP instructors. A special thank you to the many mothers and grandmothers for donating muffins and fruit to our young athletes.

The great success of the hockey school makes it possible to continue holding the event on an annual basis.

At the end of September, CMHA partnered with the Kebsquasheshing Golf Club to host their 1st annual “Return to the Ice” golf tourna-

ment. Eighteen (18) teams of experienced and young beginner golfers participated in the tournament.

Chapleau Minor Hockey Fundraiser Activities

Our main fundraiser is the “Jersey Sponsorship Program”. With an

annual donation, local businesses, groups, clubs, even family members can advertise

their name on a player's jersey for the current season. This program helps to pay

The Puck Has Dropped This is it, another hockey season has started for the Chapleau Huskies. Another long winter filled with learning, excitement, and hard work for our Chapleau youth. Our community has shown a growing interest in this sport and this year, we have surpassed one hundred registrations. This season, CMHA has the Novice, Atom, and Pee Wee teams participating in the Northeastern Ontario Hockey Association rep league. The teams will be playing against teams from Kirkland Lake, Kapuskasing, Cochrane, Wawa, just to name a few. Chapleau will also be hosting many league games; a total of 12 games per team, 2 per visit, will be played in Chapleau.

Good news for our community--more visitors, and good news for the Huskies--more games throughout the season. Over the years, we have seen our Chapleau teams compete with teams classified in the “A” division. We are inviting the community to come cheer and support our Huskies. The full schedule is posted on the arena billboard and advertising will be placed with local businesses. This Sunday, November 10th, our Novice and Atom teams will be meeting the Cochrane Bears starting at 12pm. The Huskies Hockey Moms will also be offering homemade soups and chili to keep you warm between games, this in addition to the arena canteen menu. Hope to see you there.

Le jeudi 31 octobre dernier, le gymnase de l’école avait une allure terrifiante plein de monstres et sorcières. C’est tout de même avec un air de camaraderie que ces vampires et autres se sont réjouis des succès de leurs compagnons de classe. Certains élèves se sont mérité le privilège d’être élève étoile, ils ont travaillé fort durant le mois et ils sont dignes d’être reconnus pour leurs efforts. D’autres ont su démontrer la vertu vedette du mois d’octobre, celle du respect.

Sophia Orton, Noah Taylor, Mireille Turcotte et Geoffrey Binette ont vu leur nom tiré lors des tirages des mérites bon choix. Ces élèves, parmi d’autres, se sont fait « attraper » par un membre

du personnel à prendre une bonne décision au moment opportun. Ils se méritent chacun un coupon Subway.

Profitant du thème de Journée costumée, les Pépouts ont cru bon remettre un coupon de 10 minutes de jeux libres à Gabrielle O’Hearn pour le costume le plus mignon ainsi que Peyton Proulx pour le costume le plus méticuleux et Nicholas Tremblay pour celui le plus effrayant. Ces derniers gagnent un coupon pour un congé de devoirs suite à la décision des membres du personnel qui ont jugé les costumes fabuleux.

C’est avec le soutien des élèves de 6e année, le comité des Pépouts, que Madame Kathie Cummings coordonne l’événement avec l’aide de Madame Mireille Lelièvre et Madame Rosanne Turcotte.

ANNIE BLANCHARD À CHAPLEAU D’aussi loin qu’elle se souvienne, Annie Blanchard a toujours rêvé de faire carrière en musique, passion qui lui a été transmise par son grand-père maternel. Native de Maisonnette au Nouveau-Brunswick, la jeune Acadienne chante déjà depuis plusieurs années avant de participer au Gala de la chanson de Caraquet, en 2004, où elle remporte le Prix du p u b l i c .

En 2005, elle fait partie de de la 3e édition de Star Académie au Québec.

Elle doit sa percée à sa magnifique interprétation d’Évangéline, pièce culte du répertoire acadien et se retrouve en tête des palmarès pendant plusieurs semaines. En 2007, elle lance son premier album intitulé « Sur l’autre rive », un album aux accents folk et country. À l’été 2010, elle se rend pour la première fois en Europe, au Festival Pully-Lavaux en Suisse où elle donne deux concerts.

Sa performance lui vaut de recevoir le prix Guy-Bel remis à la meilleure interprète féminine. Elle entre ensuite en studio pour l’enregistrement de son

deuxième album, « Marcher vers le n o r d » .

C’est avec un immense plaisir que le Centre culturel Louis-Hémon accueillera Annie Blanchard le mercredi 27 novembre 2013. Le spectacle intitulé « Marcher vers le nord » débutera à 19 h 30 à l’École secondaire Trillium. Les billets sont disponibles au Centre culturel LouisHémon. Un spectacle à voir!

Where do we stand as a society in the 21st century. Has our collective evolution stalled to the point of no return. Are we so naive

as to suspend three senators because of wrongdoings but allowing them to continue receiving health care benefits and life insurance?

This is adding insult to injury. The taxpayers will have to divvy up legal fees of up to $500,000.00 accumulated in this process.

When is Joe Public going to have enough! That same Joe Public can have his bank account seized if he owes taxes.

Wallin stated

that “It’s an extremely sad day for Democracy in Canada. If we can’t expect the rule of law in Canada, then where on earth can we expect it.”

In the true sense of the word, her senate position was not democratically obtained and maybe she should give us an explanation as to what was followed to boot her out of the senate.

Selon la proposition, les entreprises seraient admissibles à un montant maximal de 1 0 0 0 $ p o u r l’embauche d’un jeune et à des fonds de contrepartie pour assurer sa formation.

Le crédit d’impôt viserait également à corriger l’inégalité régionale en matière d’emploi et serait doublé dans les régions du pays où le chômage des jeunes est le plus élevé. Dans un monde où chaque sou compte, des mesures comme celle-là pourraient être efficaces pour appuyer les jeunes pour qui le plus grand obstacle est le peu de possibilités d’emploi.

Manifestement , il faut déployer des efforts pour aider nos jeunes qui sont confrontés à de graves difficultés. Nous devons faire en sorte que les collèges et les universités demeurent accessibles à tous les Canadiens, quelle que soit leur situation économique, et qu’il y ait des emplois pour les jeunes diplômés. Nous ne pouvons les laisser en mauvaise posture aujourd’hui et leur demander de s’occuper du pays demain.
