Chapleau Rotary Club Acting Locally and Globally
T
he Rotary Club of Chapleau has been busy making a difference around our community and around the world. In September, Rotarians gathered to clean a section of Highway 101. Cleaning the highway and collecting litter keeps pollutants out of our waterways, helps to protect our watershed and helps preserve our precious liquid assets for generations to come. In October, club members planted 250 tulip
bulbs in Peace Park for Polio Awareness Month. The purchase of the bulbs helps Rotary International distribute polio vaccines with the ultimate goal of eradicating polio from the face of the Earth. How close are we to getting rid of polio once and for all? There are three wild polioviruses and as of 2020, two of the three viruses have been eradicated due to effective vaccination programs. Polio does still exist, although polio
cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated more than 350 000 cases to 22 reported cases in 2017. There are currently only two countries where the wild poliovirus (WPV1) is still circulating: Afghanistan and Pakistan. In the spring, when you are walking through the Louis Dube Peace Park, enjoy the tulips. Are you looking to make a difference both locally and globally? Do you enjoy socializing with like-minded people who want to help others? Consider joining Rotary. Leave a message on the Chapleau Rotary Club Facebook page and a Rotarian will contact you.

s part of the 2021 Fall Economic Statement, the Ontario government will introduce legislation that, if passed, would raise the general minimum wage from $14.35 to $15.00 per hour effective January 1, 2022. Under the proposed changes, the special minimum wage rate for liquor servers would be eliminated and they would be entitled to the general minimum wage. Students under 18, homeworkers and hunting, fishing and wilderness guides
would also see an increase in their special minimum wage rates. Details were shared today by Premier Doug Ford, Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development and Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance. “Ontario's workers have been the unsung heroes of this pandemic, as they've stocked shelves, kept our supply chain moving and helped so many of us enjoy a meal among family and friends at a local restaurant,” said Cont’d on P.2
