$12 million in cannabis seized from illegal grow-op in Chapleau

olice busted an illegal grow-op in Chapleau and seized an estimated $12 million in cannabis on Wednesday.

Five people — all from the Greater Toronto Area — have been arrested.

On May 19, at approximately 1 p.m., members of the North East Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) executed a Cannabis Act (CA) search warrant at a commercial property on Martel Road in Chapleau.

A search of the premises revealed a large illegal cannabis growing operation. More than 12,000 plants in various stages of growth were seized as well as lighting and electrical equipment.

The information is invaluable and should be of interest to virtually everyone. Over the next few months we will be publishing the information from the The Little Black Book of Scams 2nd Edition, one scam at a time. Last week we published Phishing and Smishing Scams. Today the topic is: Emergency Scams Caring grandparents, don't act too quickly!

Emergency frauds usually target loving grandparents, taking advantage of their emotions to rob them of their money. The typical scam starts with a grandparent receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be their grandchild.

The 'grandchild' goes on to say that they're in trouble – common misfortunes include having been in a car accident, getting locked up in jail, or

trouble returning home from a foreign country – and they need money immediately. The caller will ask questions, getting you to reveal personal information. They'll also swear you to secrecy, saying they are embarrassed and don't want other family members to find out what's happened.

One variation of this ploy features two people on the phone, one pretending to be a grandchild and the other a police officer or lawyer. In other cases, the scammer will pretend to be an old neighbour or a family friend in trouble.

Tips to protect yourself: · Take time to verify the story. Scammers are counting on you wanting to quickly help your loved one in an emergency. · Call the child's parents or friends to find out about their whereabouts. · Ask the person on the phone questions that only your loved one would be able to answer and verify their identity before taking steps to help.

· Never send money to anyone you don't know and trust. · Never give out any personal information to the caller.

If you suspect a scam, always report it.

Letters to the Editor RE : Theft of plants This letter wishes to address the theft of perennials from the Sacred Heart church, as well as from the Peace Park in 2020 and 2021.

In 2020 the parish priest Fr Sauvé had purchased 12 bleeding hearts to decorate the raised flower bed below the Sacred Heart statue. The bleeding hearts were planted in a semi-circle around the bed. Shortly thereafter he noticed there were only 9 plants left. Someone had taken 3 of the bleeding hearts and repositioned the remaining 9 around the bed to make the theft less obvious.

Again last year I believe the date to be early June, on my daily walks through the Peace Park I noticed a blank spot in one of the park's riverbank beds on the Eastern end of the park, where a 'Lorraine Sunshine' heliopsis had been planted, by myself. I had purchased this particular perennial for my home garden and kept one for me and transplanted another one in this small bed located at the foot of a bench facing the river, along with other smaller perennials. This heliopsis was unusual in that its leaves were bicolored green and cream, with yellow daisy flowers later in the season. I have since then replaced the stolen heliopsis with a smaller seedling of the same perennial.

This year it seems the culprit struck again on the Catholic church property as more bleeding hearts were taken, leaving only 4 in the same flower bed.

I want to think that the same person is responsible for these thefts.

It is disheartening on many fronts to be the victim of theft, not only because these plants cost money, but the gardeners who choose and pay for them do so to add beauty to their surroundings.

I probably wouldn't have bothered mentioning this issue had the thief not struck again this year.

Shortly after the 2015 election the Prime Minister travelled to the Paris Climate summit proclaiming, “Canada’s back and here to help.”

Now, that optimism is fading fast and with every p a s s i n g d a y, i t i s b e c o m i n g c l e a r t h e government’s climate plan is mired in problems, in part from a competing commitment to the fossil fuel sector. While Donald Trump’s administration offered the government a convenient foil that allowed for generous comparisons, the new Biden administration is stripping away that advantage and laying down a new challenge. Now, with a President who holds real ambitions to tackle the climate crisis, Canada is set to be outpaced by our neighbours to the South.

If it weren’t for the pandemic, the government’s struggles to address climate change would surely be a bigger issue. Canadians clearly want action on this front, but according to a New York Times article this month, Canada is the only G7 nation whose greenhouse gas

Canada needs to play catch-up on climate change emissions have increased since the Paris climate agreement was signed six years ago. Those with a long memory will remember how the Kyoto Accord withered due to inaction and left us further from our goals than we were at the outset.

With the Biden administration aiming for a 50% cut to greenhouse-gas emissions below US 2005 levels by 2030, Canada is falling behind in action and ambition. According to the Prime Minister, we will now be aiming to cut emissions by 40% to 45% by 2030. Even if that were to happen, the science has been clear that Canada needs to cut its emissions by at least 50% by 2030 to do our part to avoid worst-case scenarios. Also, bear in mind that due to inaction, these goals will have to be met in less than a decade.

A large part of the problem for Canada is our national commitment to energy. Since 2015 this government bought a pipeline and continues to send billions in subsidies to the oil and gas industry. The convenient excuse of blaming Stephen Harper is fading and this government’s inaction is of their own making. More to the point, Stephen Harper didn’t force this government to give the energy sector $18 billion in handouts and tax breaks last year.

This has to stop, or we’ll never meet our commitments. Those weren’t made to achieve some feel-good moment, they were made based on the most recent climate science and to meet the

recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which will keep warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid the worst case scenarios related to climate change.

Again, per the IPCC’s recommendations we need to reduce our emissions by at least 50 per cent from 2005 levels.

The climate crisis is one of the biggest threats, not only facing Canadians, but people worldwide. Like most Canadians, New Democrats want to see a cleaner, greener future that protects our climate and all those living on our planet. We have the power to make a difference on a global scale, but we need to take stronger action now.

As it stands, we’re not headed in the right direction and need to make big, bold changes before things get worse. That starts by putting a stop to the billions of dollars we subsidize the fossil fuel industry with every year. A better use of those dollars is to invest in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure that will help us fight the climate crisis while creating good jobs across Canada in sectors like energy-efficiency retrofits and the electrification of transit. We are at a critical moment and should take advantage of America’s ambition to work together to protect our environment so we can offer future generations a clean and healthy planet.

Alors que l’administration Trump offrait au gouvernement une toile de fond permettant de généreuses comparaisons, la nouvelle administration Biden réduit à néant cet avantage et pose un nouveau défi.

Comme le président cherche vraiment à s’attaquer à la crise climatique, il y a fort à parier que le Canada sera devancé par son voisin du sud.

Si ce n’était de la pandémie, les efforts déployés par le gouvernement pour s’attaquer au changement climatique poseraient certainement davantage problème. Les Canadiens veulent des mesures concrètes sur le plan climatique. Or, selon un article paru dans le New York Times ce mois-ci, le Canada est le seul pays du G7 dont les émissions de gaz à effet de serre ont augmenté depuis la signature de l’Accord de Paris il y a six ans. Ceux qui ont bonne mémoire se souviendront que l’Accord de Kyoto a fini par s’étioler faute de mesures concrètes et que nos objectifs n’en ont été que plus perturbés.

Comme l’administration Biden vise, d’ici 2030, à réduire de 50 % ses émissions de gaz à effet

de serre par rapport aux niveaux de 2005, on peut dire que le Canada est moins énergique et ambitieux.

Selon le premier ministre, nous nous efforcerons dorénavant de réduire nos émissions de 40 à 45 % d’ici 2030. Même si nous y parvenons, les scientifiques ont clairement démontré que le Canada doit réduire ses émissions d’au moins 50 % d’ici 2030 s’il veut éviter les pires scénarios. Il faut également se rappeler que, vu l’inaction, il faudra atteindre ces objectifs en moins de 10 ans.

Le problème pour le Canada tient en grande partie à son engagement national envers le secteur de l’énergie. Depuis 2015, le gouvernement, qui a acheté un pipeline, continue de verser à l’industrie pétrolière et gazière des milliards de dollars en subventions. Il est de moins en moins commode de blâmer Stephen Harper face à l’inaction du présent gouvernement. Qui plus est, Stephen Harper n’a jamais forcé le Gouvernement Libéral à octroyer 18 milliards de dollars au secteur de l’énergie en cadeaux et en allègements fiscaux l’année dernière.

Il faut que cela cesse, faute de quoi nous ne respecterons jamais nos engagements, dont le but n’est pas de nous donner bonne conscience pour un certain temps. Ces engagements ont été pris en fonction des données scientifiques les plus récentes et conformément aux recommandations du Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat, qui visent à éviter un réchauffement supérieur à 1,5 degré Celsius et les pires scénarios

climatiques. Encore une fois, selon les recommandations du Groupe, nous devons réduire nos émissions d’au moins 50 % par rapport aux niveaux de 2005.

La crise climatique est l’une des plus graves menaces qui pèsent non seulement sur les Canadiens, mais sur le monde entier. Comme la plupart des Canadiens, les néo-démocrates veulent un avenir plus sain et plus vert où le climat et tout ce qui y vit sont protégés. Nous avons le pouvoir d’influer sur le cours des choses à l’échelle mondiale, mais nous devons maintenant prendre des mesures plus énergiques. À l’heure actuelle, nous faisons fausse route et nous devons apporter de plus gros changements avant que la situation ne s’aggrave. Cela commence en mettant un terme aux subventions de milliards de dollars accordées à l’industrie des énergies fossiles chaque année. On utiliserait ces sommes à meilleur escient en les investissant dans l’énergie propre et dans une infrastructure durable qui nous aidera à lutter contre la crise climatique tout en créant de bons emplois au Canada dans des secteurs comme l’amélioration de l’efficacité énergétique et l’électrification du transport public. Nous sommes à un point décisif et nous devrions nous inspirer de l’ambition des États-Unis pour conjuguer nos efforts afin de protéger notre environnement. C’est ainsi que nous pourrons offrir aux générations futures une planète propre et saine.

Michael J. Morris About seven years ago now, I wrote a weekly column for the now folded Cranbrook Guardian, a blog published by the Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook Society.

At the time I was writing Chapleau Moments for the Chapleau Express and my own blog, I also wrote features and edited the Uneek Luxury Tours blog based in Orlando, Florida.

The years have passed now, and in a couple of months I will have been writing Chapleau Moments for 12 years.

When Mario Lafreniere asked me if I would write a column I thought we might be good for six months or so.

Over the years I have been asked by many people why I live in Cranbrook and write about "some place" in Ontario all the time. After all I will have lived in Cranbrook for 32 years in August this year.

Anyway, it struck me that I have been doing and teaching communications, journalism and related things for over 60 years now, starting with a Chapleau High School column in the long gone Mid-North News in 1957. Shortly after, Joy (Evans) Heft joined me.

Michael reflects on the first rough drafts of history over 60 years 1980s after I had returned home to teach at Chapleau High School in 1969.

Never did I think that all these years later I would still be writing about Chapleau, but it is now coming up on 12 years since Mario Lafreniere invited me to write for the Chapleau Express. Never did I think when I was a student at CHS that I would spend most of my life as a storyteller working on those first rough drafts of history.

I also wrote "Sons of Thunder.. Apostles of Love" to mark the 100th anniversary of St. John's Church in 1985, and with my cousin Michael McMullen, wrote "The Chapleau Boys Go to War" published in 2015. It is now in its third edition.

And other than covering the 1968 World Series between Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, interestingly two of the major stories I covered, occurred in Chapleau. I should mention that after attending Waterloo Lutheran university (now Wilfrid Laurier University) where I was editor of the student newspaper for two years I became a daily newspaper reporter.

Robert 'Bob' Fife, now Ottawa Bureau Chief of the Globe and Mail, but a "Chapleau boy" contacted me to ask if I would cover a test of the nuclear winter theory that would be conducted near Chapleau in the early 1980s for the United Press news service. The story appeared on the front page of many newspapers in the United States.

The other was an interview with Pierre Trudeau, when he was Prime Minister of Canada, at the Chapleau CPR station for CBC Television News. Mr. Trudeau was travelling by train across Canada with his sons, one of whom Justin is now Prime Minister of Canada. In Revelstoke, BC, just down the road from me now, hecklers had thrown eggs at Mr. Trudeau's railway car.

By late 1958 I was also co-hosting a weekly teen television program on CHAP-TV with Phyllis Chrusoskie and Gary Foran.Yes, Chapleau did have a television station back then.

It was founded by Arthur Grout. Some years later Dr. G.E. Young established a station , and I became the volunteer program director in the

Muriel (Hunt) Morris, my mother as young teacher presented the prime minister with a dozen eggs.

CBC Television News wanted the story. We got it.

Shortly after I arrived at College of the Rockies, I was asked who was the most famous person I had interviewed. Of course I replied "Prime Minister Trudeau" knowing full well nobody believed me. It so happened that I had a photo of me with the prime minister and I put it on my office wall.

Nobody ever questioned me again!!!!

Let's go back to Chapleau 1958 for a moment and see some of the happenings at CHS and in the community.

The CHS hockey league was underway and the Redmen and Eskimos met in the MJM circa 1968 season opener at the Chapleau Memorial Arena. In an exciting start to the season, the Redmen won 5-3 -- only one problem. As yet the teams did not have sweaters, and it was difficult to distinguish between the teams. Problem was solved when always generous Chapleau merchants and others supplied them.

Back at the school, Angelo Bucciarelli, and Des Delaney, president and chairman of the vocational services committee of the Chapleau Rotary Club respectively, presented a plaque to the school. The 120 students attended an assembly where several melodies were sung with Alison McMillan as pianist. The plaque was presented to Jim Schafer, Student Council president.

For the first time CHS had entered a curling team in a schoolboy bonspiel in Espanola.

Players were Brian Demers, Jim Cockburn, Vince Crichton and Bill McLeod and apparently they gave a "creditable performance".

We have a Toll Free Crisis Line which is staffed 24 hours a day. We can arrange for free transportation to the Centre for women who live in the Algoma/Chapleau area. We also offer support to women who live in the communities of Chapleau, White River, Dubreuilville, and Hornepayne through our Outreach Program. Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services. But, the one thread that must be evident in all, however, is a desire to help all children learn and grow, no matter who they are or what their backgrounds are.

The same philosophy is applicable in the political world as well. I wish I could say the same for Premier Ford and those whom he has placed in positions of power all around him. If Doug Ford truly could identify with the little guy, he could not possibly have chosen many of his actions or in some cases, inactions.

For example, consider the huge segment of our population who are diagnosed as diabetic. It has been estimated that 1 in 16 Canadians are diabetic. Actually the ratio is likely significantly higher as so many people go undiagnosed for years. My office receives many calls and letters requesting improved benefits for diabetic patients. For years, the Canadian Diabetes Association has advocated for diabetics who struggle to pay for expensive monitoring devices, which provide real-time analysis of blood sugar levels and are therefore critical to maintaining optimum health for those with Type 1 Diabetes. In an effort to provide relief for these people, the NDP proposed Bill 272 which would add glucose and flash monitoring devices to Ontario's Assistive Devices Program (ADP).

Having such devices would mean a better quality of life for adults living

with Diabetes, and fewer tears for kids living with the disease, doing away with the need for finger pricks. They would make monitoring one's blood sugar easier so that people can make real-time adjustments to their diets and medication, thus increasing the quality of life and possible lifespan.

This month the Ford Conservatives chose to forego an opportunity to help thousands of Ontarians by rejecting the bill in its entirety, thus forcing thousands of diabetics to needlessly continue to face ongoing struggles. How is this showing care and compassion for the little guy?

In an even more timely example that hits close to home, just days ago, Ontarians were shocked to learn that Greyhound Bus Lines is closing its operations across Canada permanently. Thousands of Ontarians who depend on Greyhound, especially many who live in the rural areas or the North, will be literally stranded, and once again, leaving them left far behind. Our university and college students are being denied an affordable way to get between home and school. Our seniors who need to get to medical appointments or to be reunited with their grandkids once this pandemic nightmare is over are having their independence stripped. These regular folks all need and deserve a reliable, affordable inter-city transit solution.

The Liberals and Conservatives have already cut and limited other transit options — like the Northlander — and Doug Ford needs to tell us how he's going to fill the massive gap left behind. Regional transportation is an essential service. It should not be left up to a for-profit corporation.

Those readers who follow such matters know that New Democrats have long been calling for the expansion of the province's two existing public regional transportation companies, GO and Ontario Northland. Now is the time to do it. We will have to see how much Doug Ford can identify with those who are facing serious transportation issues as a result of Greyhound's closure.

I firmly believe that it is the duty of elected officials to bring the voice of all constituents to the legislative assembly. They need to hear what the average family and seniors have to say and truly understand their perspective. We need leadership who does more than pay lip service to the little guy at election time. We need a government that is tuned into what is best for all Ontarians rather than rich and influential political supporters with centristic interests.
