Pros and cons of a home equity line of credit

(NC) With the warm weather finally here, maybe you’re considering installing a pool or doing those home renovations you’ve been dreaming about. Perhaps you want to get away and an RV or a cottage are at the top of your wish list. It can seem like using the equity in your home is a quick and easy way to pay for such big expenses. While you may benefit in the short term, it’s also important to consider the longerterm risks about home equity lines of credit, often referred to as HELOCs. A HELOC is a form of credit that relies

on using your home as a guarantee that you’ll pay back the money you borrow. Unlike a loan, a HELOC lets you borrow money, pay it back and borrow it again up to a maximum credit limit.. The interest rates are variable and will change as interest rates go up or down. HELOC “pros” include: • They often offer easy access to credit. • They have lower interest rates than other types of credit, especially unsecured loans and credit cards. • You can pay back the money you borrow at any time without a penalty. • You can borrow as much as you want up to your available credit limit. HELOC “cons” include: • It takes discipline to pay off because you’re usually required to only pay the monthly interest charges. • Large amounts of available credit can make it easier to over-spend and carry debt for a long time. • You may have to pay off your entire HELOC if you want to switch your mortgage to another lender.

Chapleau Emphasizing the child before subject Moments content always --- Muriel E Morris by

Michael J. Morris When I was an editor at the Chatham Daily News more than 50 years ago, my mother, Muriel E Morris, decided to come from Chapleau and spend the summer with me. To keep herself busy during the day, she decided to take a summer course in education. The times they were a changing in the late sixties in more ways than one, and education was included. Mom, who had taught school for 34 years at the time became increasingly frustrated with the new thinking in education being set out by the professor. One day the professor said in effect that teach er s mu s t " acco u n t f or indiv id u al differences" in children and used some other trendy words in his lecture. Mom, who had not said a word in class all summer, raised her hand to ask him a question. "Don't you mean that all children are special with needs?" she asked. I don't recall his reply to Mom, but I do know the rest of the class agreed with her. After spending her entire teaching career treating each and every child as special with needs, Mom retired two years later after teaching at Chapleau Public School and at Kekabeka Falls, shortly after I returned home to teach. Mom taught elementary school and emphasized the child before the subject content always. Obviously, she had no use for the labelling of children, or anyone else for that matter. Let me give you an example that involved me. I was teaching Economics at Chapleau High School, and almost all the students in my class failed a test. I was having coffee with Mom and pontificating against my class in typical teacher fashion. Mom stopped my little rant, made some suggestions including that maybe I scrap the course content as I had prepared it, and start over. She also suggested I might want to think about finding another career. "Start where the students are, not where you are," she recommended, adding that she didn't have the foggiest notion what I was talking about when I tried to explain the material on the test.

I took her advice and we started over. In fact, as Junior "B" hockey was very big in Chapleau at the time, I used a hockey rink to teach the factors of production. Some years later, a school board member, on a tour of the school, stuck his head in Room 104 and asked me, "Is there where they teach hockey?" I replied yes it was and offered to demonstrate. He didn't take me up on the offer. Today, more than ever, I believe my mother was right, and I was so fortunate to finish my teaching career at College of the Rockies where I helped found a grad program in new media communications which was very student centred. I will always be indebted to Dr. Wm. Berry Calder, then the president of COTR, who believed that the future is now in 1994 and supported me as we pioneered web-based communications when many told me that email would never really catch on. One of my COTR faculty friends stopped me in the hall one day and advised that email would never catch on. I see him the odd time and ask if he sent or received an email recently!!! This is in 2022. In 1995 I was privileged to attend a conference where the keynote speaker was Dr. Nicholas Negroponte then the head of the Media Lab at MIT. Dr Negroponte told us that by the Year 2000 all the information we would ever need would be on a handheld device with the information So true. In fact, about the only reason use a laptop is to write Chapleau

Moments. I could write it on my "phone,” but my aging eyes won't let me!! The advances in internet technology since I retired in 2000 have been phenomenal, and today I think of the possibilities for a real student-centred education system where it is accepted that each child is special with needs. I would be most interested to hear from you. Please comment or email me at mikejmorris41@outlook.com

Simple tips for taking care of a senior pet (NC) Aging is a fact of life that we can’t ignore forever. While many of us realize we need to make some changes to our lifestyle to enjoy life to the fullest, we don’t always realize that sometimes our pets might also need a little help to enjoy their golden years. Here are some steps to consider as your pets age. Active living Maintaining an active lifestyle is important for your senior pets’ health and happiness. As they age, daily walks are an easy, low-impact way for them to get some exercise. Just remember, elderly dogs are often more sensitive, so it’s important to make sure their

leashes or harnesses are comfortable throughout your walk. Nutrition Many pets can maintain their regular diet as they age. However, as pets get older, the ways in which they eat may need to be adapted. For example, older pets may need to have their meals at regular times, in which case an automatic pet feeder may help keep their meals on schedule and their portions controlled. It’s also generally recommended that pets need to drink 1 oz (30 ml) of water per 1 lb of body weight every day. Pet fountains are a great way to provide them with fresh flowing water to keep them hydrated.

Pet-proofed home There are a few changes you can make in your home that will improve your pet’s quality of life. Setting up a ramp or steps can help your pets reach their favourite spots, like a bed that may be too high. PetSafe, for example, offers systems that allow you to change from pet steps to a pet ramp in a flash. It’s an easy way to reduce the risk of injury. Keeping a ramp available to get in and out of the car is also important for senior dogs, especially if they have regular car rides for vet visits or trips to the cottage. Find out about other ways you can improve care for your senior pets at petsafe.ca.

NDP will protect students' mental health Andrea Horwath and the NDP will help post-secondary students care for their mental health with a free and easily accessible mental health care. “University, college and trade school is a stressful time — it's always a stressful time, full of change,” said Horwath. “Right now, a silent epidemic of mental health struggles is making life so much harder on students and young adults. Students are trying to cope with anxiety, stress, loss and grief, and getting used to being on campus after years of isolation. And students think there is no way they'll ever be able to afford the kind of counselling or support they need — so they suffer in silence, thinking there's no where to turn. “But mental health care is health care, and we shouldn't have to pay for it. Together, we can fix it — so in Ontario, students will always have someone to turn to, and they'll get mental health

care with their OHIP card, not a credit card.” The NDP plan to help university students includes: · Expanding OHIP coverage to include universal basic mental health care, and introducing legislation that recognizes mental health is as important as physical health. · Developing province-wide, traumainformed standards to respond to campus sexual violence and prevent a continued patchwork of different policies across different institutions. · Investing in mental health professionals and programs on post secondary campuses. · Creating Mental Health and Addictions Ontario, a new co-ordinating organization that will take the lead on identifying and publicly reporting on Ontarians' mental health needs.

Doug Ford cut $2 billion from mental health and addictions services over his term in office, and he cut OSAP. Under the Liberals, wait times for mental health services grew, and people who needed care often didn't get it. “Together, we can stop the Conservative and Liberal cuts, fix mental health care, and give students their best chance at a healthy, happy future, regardless of the size of their bank accounts.” g and publicly reporting mental health needs, developing a comprehensive wait list for services, bring in province-wide mental health standards, creating a basket of services, and making sure that mental health and addiction programs are delivered across Ontario.
