Almost 4,000 Dead in Long-Term Care as We Approach End of Wave 2: Wave 2 Deaths Exceed Wave 1 As the devastation of the second wave of COVID-19 abates, we are left with certainty that Ontario failed to adequately prepare its health care setting despite months of warning. The Ontario Health Coalition has been tracking COVID-19 outbreaks in health care settings since mid-March, and released a new report today on large outbreaks in health care settings, including long-term care, hospitals and retirement homes. The new report can be found here. As of March 3, the second wave of COVID19 has 53% more infections and 14% more deaths in residents, patients, and staff than the first wave.

Since our last report January 19th up to Tuesday, February 9th, the following are the trends: • The number of people infected in active large outbreaks has decreased by every measure.

As of March 3, the cumulative number of residents and patients infected just in the currently active large outbreaks in health care settings decreased 78% from our last report a month ago on February 9. The cumulative number of staff members infected in active large outbreaks decreased 80% from 3,289 a month on February 9. There is a total of 1,850 cases cumulative in the currently active large outbreaks. Four weeks earlier, the total number of cases in the then-active large outbreaks was Long Term 8,564; thus, there was a Forecast Thursday 78% decrease in cases in High -1 currently active large Low -14 health care outbreaks Friday overall.

of large outbreaks, almost a third of the long-term care outbreaks that are currently active are large and have not been controlled effectively. Of the 74 active outbreaks in long-term care homes, 23 of them or 31% have more than 10 patients, residents, and staff infected. Details of the nine worst currently-active long-term care outbreaks, with 120 deaths attributed to them, can be found in Table 1 below.

• The number of cumulative cases in the second wave has far surpassed the amount from the first wave. From September 1 to current day, what we are counting as the second wave, the total number of long-term care cases is 13,114, which is 4,546 more cases than there were in the first wave (March 31 to August 25), or an increase of 53%. The total number of long-term care residents and staff deaths in Wave 2 so far is 2,062, which is 13% more than there were in the first wave.

Since January, there have been 6,204 long-term care residents and staff infected with COVID-19, with 1,078 deaths as of March 9.

This averages out to 620 new cases in staff and residents every week of 2021, and 108 deaths each week. With great sadness we report that the average number of deaths of the currently active long-term care outbreaks is 6.7.

You'll get a PayPal or email notification that claims the payment is pending. The catch is, the notifications will say the payment will only be released when you provide a tracking number for the goods. By the time you enter the tracking number, you'll have already shipped the merchandise only to learn that the payment notification was fake. In other cases, you might get paid with a fake money transfer, a fraudulent cheque or stolen credit card. In another version, the scammer may send you a message that sys the payment can't be sent due to a problem with your PayPal or bank account. You will be asked to pay a fee to obtain a business account to complete the transaction. The scammer offer to pay the fee if you reimburse them using a transfer or wire service. "Old time high school reunions" often the binding that holds the "town book together”

Michael J. Morris As a committee has been formed to make plans to mark the 100th anniversary of Chapleau High School in 2022, my thoughts have gone back to articles I have written about reunions past, as well as memories of them.

About 10 years ago I was telling my good friend Derik Hodgson about the Chapleau High School 90th anniversary reunion festival, and, as always, in the years since we first met at the Kingston Whig-Standard as young reporters, he had a great line that summed it all up and caused me to reflect on the "town book" of Chapleau.

Derik, one of Canada's best investigative reporters of my generation, observed that people in cities, don't always understand what reunions at "old-tyme high schools mean to smaller centres....they are often the binding that holds the town book together."

What a great line, among the many that I have seen Derik write, and immediately I started to think about how CHS reunions are the binding that does hold the history of Chapleau together -at least from 1922 on when the high school doors first opened.

A school reunion gives us something in common, memories of a shared experience before we were all grown up and headed off in different directions to lead our adult lives. The reunion brings us home again as part of the binding that holds the town book together.

of the students, teachers and activities that made up so much of our high school life.

Today we even have virtual meetings by email, or Skype, Twitter and Facebook, but come 2022, hopefully it will be the real thing, and once home, stories will be told and while much regret will be expressed over those who are no longer here, the emphasis will be on those things that bring folks together, centred on life either at the "old" school on Pine Street or the "new" school on the hill.

For example a CHS mini reunion was held at the home of Harry "Butch" and Brigitte Pellow at their Toronto home in 2014. Sixty six of us were there! Sadly Butch died in 2016.

It just struck me that the new school has now served the community longer than the old school, and many more students have attended it than ever went to the building on the banks of the river.

In my life I have been most fortunate to have attended CHS as a student and to have returned and taught there for almost 20 years. But in fact, like many of Chapleau's old families, my connection goes back almost to the beginning of the high school in Chapleau in 1922. For example my mother, Muriel E. (Hunt) Morris and her sister Elsie (Hunt) Zufelt were students there in the 1920s while my father Jim Morris and some cousins attended in the 1930s, his sister Marion by 1940, and other cousins in the late 1940s early 1950s, then me, and then more cousins through the years. Our family history, perhaps like yours, is tied in to the school.

When CHS celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1982, I wrote an article about the changes to the physical face of Chapleau that would have occurred since many who came home for the reunion would immediately notice.

It was called 'Yes Virginia, there is a Chapleau', and details Virginia's walk around town after an absence of 30 years. Here are some of the highlights from her walkabout. With apologies to the 'Virginia' in the Christmas classic, 'Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus'.

My Virginia noted that here it was the sixtieth anniversary of her school, and they had moved it "into the bush" and it was one of "those modern buildings all on one floor."

Virginia was especially concerned about where students drank their beer, for according to the old song "Give a shout, give a cheer for the boys who drink the beer in the cellars of old Chapleau High" and now there was no cellar.

The Lady Minto Hospital had disappeared and "they put the hospital out behind the high school. Am I ever glad they also built a new road to serve these buildings. When I was a kid there was nothing more than a trail. And some-

Changing the Elections Act for the pandemic

In a minority parliament there will always be speculation on how the next election will be triggered. Scenarios run from government’s that engineer their own defeat to those that fall on their best intentions or even by accident. Under normal conditions there isn’t much that is different once the government falls and an election is triggered. That said, our current situation is anything but normal.

The pandemic has created new challenges to how we will vote if an election occurs anytime soon.

While there have already been a few successful provincial elections in Canada during the pandemic, the recent experience of Newfoundland and Labrador illustrates how vulnerable the exercise is to the virus. That election was supposed to take place weeks ago but was delayed due to a Covid variant outbreak the day before the vote. The province then cancelled inperson voting and moved to have all voting take place by mail. It remains to be seen how the ballot plays out, but there will be a record low turnout based on ballot requests received. Even if every ballot is cast, the maximum turnout will be 51% a full four points below the lowest ever for the

province.

The low turnout may be due to the way the voting option changed mid-stream and is something that will require study since it is difficult to fully understand in real time. Either way, it may have been the final push needed for the government to bring forward their legislation to temporarily amend the Elections Act to include special measures for the Covid 19 pandemic.

The proposed changes will extend the Chief Electoral Officer’s power to adapt the provisions of the Act to ensure the health or safety of electors or election officers. It will allow for the creation of special polling stations inside a single institution where seniors or persons with a disability reside. It will allow voting to take place over a three-day period of a Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There are measures that change when demands for items like documents can be placed on campaigns. The legislation also has measures that allow electors to submit an application for registration and special ballot in writing or in electronic form, outlines provisions for mailing ballots, and includes a sunset clause to undo these changes once they are no longer necessary.

Given the experience of Newfoundland and Labrador along with the uncertain stability of minority governments, it is reasonable to make changes to election laws specifically for the pandemic but that doesn’t mean we need to hold a vote immediately. That’s the message New Democrats are offering as election speculation

Quoi qu’il en soit, il s’agit peut-être de la dernière impulsion nécessaire pour que le gouvernement présente son projet de loi visant à modifier temporairement la Loi électorale afin d’inclure des mesures spéciales relatives à la pandémie de COVID-19.

We are challenging the government to worry less about their political fortunes until we have vaccinated enough Canadians to make all aspects of our lives safer – not just elections. That’s why we told the government they are going to have to call an election if they really want one.

For their part, the Conservatives say they don’t want an election either, but their actions in parliament don’t make that seem like a solid commitment. They have been taking every opportunity to hold up house business with an erratic procedural strategy that makes it seem they’re itching to go to the polls. While most of parliament is supportive of the NDP call to extend hours so MPs can debate important legislation and make up for time lost to the pandemic, the Conservatives are refusing to agree to the extra work in a move that amounts to a dare for the government to call an election.

No matter how this parliament wraps up, it is in Canada’s best interest that we are prepared for a pandemic election. The Newfoundland and Labrador example is quite instructive, especially with a third wave of Covid expected and the growth of virus variants across the country. If the legislation works through parliament quickly, it will still take 90 more days to come into effect and there are questions that Canada Post must answer before we can confidently say we are better prepared for a pandemic election.

Dream Of Exploring Canada To Come True For $70 Million Lotto Max Winner From Sudbury Region How many times would you check your LOTTO MAX ticket if you thought you had won $70 million? Marc Meilleur of Noëlville, Ontario checked his ticket almost a dozen times before starting to believe he won the $70 million LOTTO MAX jackpot from the February 26, 2021 draw.

Marc and his wife, Dorothy-Ann have been dedicated lottery players for many years.

Each buys their own tickets to ensure they don’t miss a draw. Marc buys Quick Picks while his wife plays her own numbers which consist of birth dates and anniversaries.

The morning after the draw, the 60-yearold retired mechanic checked his Quick Pick tickets on the OLG Lottery app when he saw “$70,000,000” displayed on the screen. Even after scanning the ticket four or five more times with the same result, he was still not convinced he had hit the LOTTO MAX jackpot. “That’s when I went to the bedroom to get Dorothy-Ann and tell her ‘I think I have the winning ticket,’” said Marc while at the OLG Prize Centre collecting his incredible windfall. “But my wife thought I was joking, so I scanned the ticket again to show her the $70 million win on the screen.”

In disbelief, Dorothy-Ann called the OLG Win! Line and went to OLG.ca to check the numbers. The couple then drove to the store in Noëlville where Marc purchased the ticket, waited until the other customers had left and

asked the owner, who is also a friend, to validate the ticket through the lottery terminal. The “Winner/Gagnant” jingle played, the terminal froze and an OLG representative called the store to speak to the retailer and then to Marc. That’s when the thrill of the win became a reality.

“I started crying tears of joy,” said Dorothy-Ann, who was still tearing up while recounting the story. Marc added, “My mind was racing, and my hands were shaking, and I was wondering what to do next.” That’s when they decided to share the news with their family. The first call was to their daughter who lives in the Sudbury area. At first, she thought there was bad news because her mom was crying but soon, she too was overjoyed. The couple then tried contacting their two sons via text to share the unbelievable news about the win.

Marc and Dorothy-Ann, who also have seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, are finally settling into the reality that their good fortune will be able to change the lives of many generations of their family. “As a parent, you want to provide the best for your children and now we can take care of them without worry,” explained Marc. “We want them to be able to buy new homes and vehicles, but we also have a great team of financial advisors helping all of us set up the grandchildren and great-grandchildren for future success.”

The couple also have a few LOTTO

MAX dreams of their own to fulfill. They are very dedicated to their community and surrounding area and vow to help various charities and institutions near and dear to them.

Because they love the natural beauty of the Sudbury region, they will purchase a new home and remain in the area. But at the top of their bucket list is a new truck and RV, and when it is safe to travel again, they want to crisscross Canada. “I am not a big fan of flying across the ocean, so I want to drive and see all of the country which I love,” said Marc. “Starting on the east coast, there are so many beautiful areas to discover all over this amazing country. I’ve only seen it on TV and now me and my wife want to see all of Canada in person.”

While they get used to the fact that they are Ontario’s newest multi-millionaires, Marc and Dorothy-Ann will take time to enjoy their family and keep dreaming of the all adventures that await them.

Horwath marks one-year anniversary of pandemic with roundtable to reflect

To mark the one year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic, Official Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath held a roundtable with people whose lives have been deeply impacted by the pandemic, and issued the following statement: “As we look back on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Ontarians, my

heart is with the thousands of families who lost loved ones, and who have been unable to come together to grieve and heal. I’m incredibly grateful for the essential workers who have been tireless, and are still giving their all despite their exhaustion. And I’m really feeling for everyone who is burnt out and isolated after a long, lonely year.

The pandemic has taken so much from so many, and demanded so much of us. Seniors in long-term care homes and their families have been through hell. One of the greatest things about being an MPP is enjoying getting to know an incredible array of people. I use the word array because an array is a collection of things of the same type. I tend to think of an array as a collection of variables. This is especially useful when thinking of people in an array.

I have been pondering the recent direction that matters at Queen's Park have been taking. It occurs to me that one of the most interesting human arrays is that of priorities. Of course there is a direct link between our personal values and our priorities. The way I see it, those people who have a strong sense of what their values and priorities have a much higher probability successfully bringing about growth and achievement. They are more likely to be successful in reaching goals that are important in life.

NDP demands Ford revoke legislation that puts our environment in the hands of developers Official Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is demanding the Ford government immediately revoke the Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO) that threatens to destroy the Duffins Creek wetland, and to repeal legislation Doug Ford is using to re-write laws to allow developers to bulldoze over protected areas.

O n F r i d a y, A m a z o n announced it would not build a giant warehouse on the site, and the City of Pickering called for a pause on the development of this wetland. Now the developer says it won’t alter the wetland, but the NDP is looking for province-wide protection.

“The community has stood up against the Ford government’s plans to allow developers to bulldoze over this greenspace and precious wetland.

This is a victory for the community, First Nations and for every Ontarian who wants to protect our environment from being paved over by Ford’s developer friends and donors,” said Horwath.

“The Ford government should never have put this wetland at risk in the first place, and they must take action immediately by revoking this MZO threatening the wetland, and removing Schedule 3 that was sneaked into Bill 257 in an attempt to retroactively legitimatize this unlawful backroom deal.”

The Official Opposition N D P is also calling for the oversight of conservation authorities to be restored.

“The fight to save our environment from Doug Ford is not over. The Ford government is still threatening the environment throughout the province, and rigging the planning system in favour of well-connected developers and PC donors. The irresponsible legislation enabling this must be repealed before Ford is able to use these new powers to destroy more of our environment,” said Horwath.

“The N D P is committed to restoring the integrity of the land use planning system, and putting a stop to these backroom deals that threaten the environment.”

Chapleau Moments Cont’d from P.3 Recreation Complex, water plant, and of course the replacement of the horseshoe bridge with a new bridge and pedestrian overpass, among other changes. Yes, the physical face of Chapleau changed dramatically in the 1970s -- more than 30 years ago. And, of course there have been more changes since.

However, after her walkabout, 'Virginia' accepted that while the physical face of Chapleau changed, "... the greatest resource of Chapleau has always been its people.

I looked forward to seeing all my old

- Page 16 friends, those who are still here and those who came for the reunion. I was simply glad to be home where it all began for me", and I added, "Yes Virginia, there is a Chapleau. The physical face had changed, but not the hearts of the people."

I wrote Virginia's story almost 40 years ago now for the souvenir newspaper marking the CHS 60th reunion, and was living in Chapleau at the time and teaching at the high school. I have not changed my view one bit about the community and its people. I hope to be at the 100th anniversary reunion.

Let me go back to Derik Hodgson for a moment and give him the last word. At one time Derik worked for Canadian Press and came to

know Lloyd 'Sparrow' McDonald, who was with CP for many years, born in Chapleau, graduated from Chapleau High School, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Here is Derik's comment on one of Chapleau's greatest resources: "Lloyd McDonald.

Legendary. Remember him working the rim at CP Toronto. Gruff. No nonsense and wonderful."

Small world. Thanks Derik for helping me share a bit about the binding that holds the town's book together! My very best wishes to those who are planning the 100th anniversary. As always I hope the entire community becomes involved!!!

Demandez à un autre adulte de vous relayer Faites appel à votre conjoint, à un autre parent ou bien à votre mère ou votre père; pour conserver votre équilibre durant cette période, vous devez trouver le moyen de partager les tâches. Prévoyez des «blocs» de temps consacrés aux enfants et au cours desquels c’est votre tour de préparer les repas, d’aider aux devoirs et de régler les problèmes qui surviennent. Durant vos «temps libres», profitez-en pour travailler, prendre votre douche ou simplement vous détendre sans vous sentir coupable.

Season Brook Trout Fishing and Safety Violations The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) wants to remind anglers that fishing regulations and seasons are in place to maintain sustainable fisheries for future generations to enjoy.

Two Huntsville men have been fined a total of $1,800 after getting caught fishing trout during the closed season. Clint Wood pleaded guilty and was fined $1,150 for angling brook trout during the closed season and failing to wear a proper helmet. Quade Generoux pleaded guilty and was fined $650 for transporting illegally obtained fish and failing to wear a proper helmet.

The court heard that on December 25, 2020, conservation officers were patrolling and targeting closed-season angling on brook trout lakes in the Dorset area. The officers contacted two men traveling near Livingston Lake Road in a utility terrain vehicle (UTV). The UTV contained angling equipment and two brook trout. The investigation determined that Wood caught the two trout illegally during the closed

season on a nearby lake. Generoux, who owned the UTV, transported Wood to the lake and back with the illegally caught fish. The fish and angling equipment were seized.

Justice of the Peace Michelle VellaBaxter heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Bracebridge, on February 10, 2021.
