Under 15 Chapleau Huskies Make History!

In the second game of pool play the Huskies welcomed back their goalie Brett Andre to meet the North Bay Trappers. Goals by #13, Braeden Bernath and #15, Fynn Mantarri in the first, and Mark Raposo, #20, assisted by #5, Jack

Cyr and # 14, Cole Ellis in the second went unanswered by the Trappers.

In the third period Captain Cole Ellis scored twice more for his second hat trick of the tournament, and stellar defensive play by blueliners Parker Baronette-Moore, Zoe Nantel, Jack Cyr and Fynn Mantarri held North Bay scoreless, until, with only 41 seconds left in the third period the Trappers scored for a final of 6-1 Huskies.

In the last game of pool play the Huskies met the Nickel City Knights. Opening the scoring at 9:34 of the first was defenseman Fynn Mantarri, #15. Also scoring in the first were Camden Arsenault, #4 assisted by #12, Sienna Lortie, and #13, Braeden Bernath from Cole Ellis who scored another at 10:45 of the second period.

Nickel City was unable to score until the third period when they scored three, but the Huskies answered back each time with goals by Stevens, Mantarri and Ellis to bring the final score to 8-3 for the Huskies, earning them home team advantage in the “A” Championship Final.

The Championship game saw the Huskies face the North Bay Trappers in a hard-fought competition. Cole Ellis scored unassisted in the opening minute of the first period. Back and forth chances in a fast-paced game kept the score 1-0 until late in the second period when North Bay scored with 2:30 left. The Huskies came out hard in the third period with a go-ahead goal

UCFO Boutique For the month of March, we are going to talk about fundraising for the local UCFO circle.

Like many organizations, the pandemic has been difficult as our annual activities such as the bazaar, the fall fair and St-Jean could not take place.

Fortunately, we were able to do our annual draws: the scratch'n'win ticket board draw in the fall and the craft basket draw in the spring.

Actually, the tickets for the basket draw will come out soon! Like last year, the items in the basket are black, gray and white as these colors are still popular. Here are items that we often see in the basket: blanket, dishcloths, dishtowels, tablecloth, slippers, cups, tea towels, utensils, stove towel, plastic bag collector, rug, gift certificates and others. The draw will take place on Thursday, May 19 at 3 p.m.

When the final buzzer went, gloves flew in the air, and Chapleau Huskies goalie Brett Andre was buried under a pile of Huskies with a reason to celebrate – they had just won their first “A” Division NDHL Championship!

The entire coaching staff of the Chapleau Huskies - Head Coach Kirk Ellis, Assistant Coaches Allen Cyr and Trevor Bernath, Trainers Robert Sanchioni and Matti Mantarri and Manager Michele Martineau were all extremely proud of the efforts of the team.

Michael J. Morris As the 100th anniversary of Chapleau High School draws closer, I am going through years of files looking for high school moments.

There will be some overlap with Chapleau Moments columns from the past 12 years. I welcome contributions from any who would like to share "Chapleau High School Moments"!!!!!

Perhaps Grant Henderson, who graduated from Chapleau High School in 1927 sums up so well the reason that those of us who no longer live in Chapleau "must go back" as he wrote in a poem about the time of the school's 60th anniversary reunion in 1982.

Grant wrote in part that he must go back to Chapleau again, and "all I ask is to meet old friends, and raise a glass on high."

On November 14, 1924, 1181 Chapleau High School Cadet Corps was established and remained an important part of high school life for 39 years, being disbanded on January 1, 1963. The annual cadet inspection usually held in late May on the field behind the Pine Street school was also a community event with large crowds attending, while the day ended with the Cadet banquet and dance.

I believe David Mizuguchi was the last commanding officer. Please correct me if I have that wrong.

For most of its history, the Cadet corps and bugle band were the personal domain of John 'Old Mac' McClellan, teacher and later principal, but interestingly, he was not the first one to look after the corps. That would have been a Mr. Ashdown, the first school principal.

Interestingly in his poem Grant refers to Mr. McClellan as 'OLD MAC' even though he would not have been that "old" when he first

Having been a school teacher though, being old seems to go with the territory as students perceive us as being old. I admit that I am there now! Mr. McClellan was a World War One veteran.

Grant recalled that one day the students released an owl in class which undoubtedly caused quite a commotion , "OLD MAC was called" who stood appalled "before his feathery blast". adding that "Perhaps it's best to leave the rest to history and the past."

Dances were very popular in the 1920s, and held in the Town Hall basement once a week, according to Grant. He also recalled dancing "with one's best girl in a close knit whirl, and dancing cheek to cheek."

My mother Muriel E. (Hunt) Morris would tell me about dances in the 1920s when she was a teenager in Chapleau. They were also held in Perpete's Hall which would have been in a building about where the Chapleau Pentecostal Church is now. My mother would sing and her older sister Elsie (Hunt) Zufelt would play the piano. Both my parents attended Chapleau High School in its first 10 years.

My father Jim Morris was commanding officer of the cadet corps, participated in school sports and was editor of the school magazine... I followed his footsteps to some extent.

Of course hockey was part of community life in the 1920s with games at the "old old rink" with the potbelly stove keeping the lobby warm. Public skating, in the darkened arena, with the silvery moon at one end and quite often the town band in attendance made it the place to be, particularly on a Friday night. It was still the place to be as I was growing up in Chapleau in the late 1940s and 1950s. It continued after the Chapleau Memorial Community Arena was opened in 1951.

Grant also wrote about Ski Club nights beneath the Northern Lights "with the happy

crowd and laughter loud, the swish of running skis". If I recall correctly the ski hill was located on the site that later became known as Dr. Young's hill.

Jack Whitney, who attended CHS in the late 1920s, in a talk he gave to students many years later recalled his first day there.

"I shall never forget my first day in First Form. I was wearing black boots (not shoes) black wool stockings up to the knee and knickerbocker pants which strapped around just below the knee and flopped over just an inch or so.

Above this I had on a long-sleeved V-neck pullover, and this was topped by a grinning face and a shock of unruly light hair. I looked a good deal like most of the other boys except for size, shape and colouring.

"The girls, as I remember wore lowwaisted long dresses down to two or three inches above the ankle, with lisle hose and sensible shoes. Most of the hairdos were dutch bobs with a few with long curls and most of the hats were the helmet type, usually of felt, and I believe were patterned after the steel helmets of the previous war."

And so, just a glimpse back to the early days at CHS as the 100th anniversary reunion draws ever closer.

Grant, who went on to a very successful career in business, often returned to Chapleau to visit over the years, usually with his great friend George Crichton, another CHS grad.

He sums it all up at the end of his poem suggesting that "Perhaps those days through memory's haze take on a richer hue" adding that perhaps that's true but "... this I know, And I've wandered up and down. Were I to pick my bringin' up place, I'd choose the same old town."

The Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with the highest inflation levels we've seen since the early 90s, has put a significant strain on people's finances. The most vulnerable have been deeply affected and among the hardest hit have been our seniors who have struggled with rising costs while the benefits they worked hard for their entire lives have stagnated.

Early on, before we knew how long Covid19 could drag on for, New Democrats fought, and won, concessions to help alleviate some of these financial pressures, but those concessions did not address the increasing financial demands seniors continue to experience. This included last year's one-time, tax-free payment for seniors. In addition, the government did eventually provide a one-time tax-free payment for seniors over the age of 75, which was a response to their delayed electoral promise.

Among the hardest hit seniors were those collecting the Guaranteed Income Supplement, which is designed to pull those with the lowest incomes out of poverty. Many seniors who rely on GIS payments also work part-time to further

to exclude CERB/CRB from their definition of income as it relates to GIS, and because they refused to offer a stream of financial supports directed towards working seniors, many were shocked to find that their GIS was either clawed back or eliminated entirely. Members of Parliament across Canada have heard heart wrenching stories where GIS-eligible seniors, who were just trying to make ends meet, found themselves in increasingly dire financial situations. Compare this to circumstances of CEOs and executives of large corporations that received government assistance in the form of the Wage Subsidy, who then turned around and gave themselves bonuses with no repercussions from the government who is continuing to refuse to address those inequalities.

New Democrats pressed this issue hard, and as a result, seniors who found themselves under financial stress due to clawbacks will now receive an additional one-time tax-free payment. Again, while the government was trying to delay these payments until May, we continued to push for seniors need help now. As a result, we were able to negotiate with the government to advance those payments a month earlier to April 19th, and opened the door for seniors who are in the worst financial circumstances to receive payments this month. In

housing crisis have a significantly larger impact on those who need to stretch their budgets but have few mechanisms in place to receive more income. A 10% OAS increases is coming this summer, but only for seniors over the age of 75 and in so doing, the government has effectively created a two-tiered system of economic supports for seniors, with no additional assistance for those between 65 and 74.

This is an issue we will continue to fight, as it makes absolutely no sense to have “junior seniors” and “senior seniors”.

What we need to do is secure a future for our seniors where we don't need to constantly review measures available for them and create patchwork policy to address issues seniors continue to face. There is much that can be done to ensure seniors can live in dignity and this is why we are advocating for the creation of a Pension Advisory Commission to develop a long-term plan to enhance Old Age Security to ensure it keeps up with inflation. We also need to boost GIS permanently, and for every eligible senior, not just those over the age of 75, to ensure that those seniors who rely on it don't simply fall deeper into poverty when inflation rises.

Seniors worked hard to build this country, and we need to work harder for them.

De nombreuses personnes âgées qui dépendent des paiements du SRG travaillent également à temps

partiel pour arrondir leurs fins de mois. Lorsqu'ils n'ont pas pu travailler pendant une partie de la pandémie, ils se sont tournés, comme beaucoup d'autres travailleurs, vers des prestations telles que la Prestation canadienne d'urgence (PCU) et la Prestation canadienne de la relance économique (PCRE) pour compenser la perte de revenus.

Toutefois, comme les libéraux ont choisi de ne pas exclure la PCU et la PCRE de la définition du revenu en ce qui a trait au SRG et qu'ils ont refusé d'offrir une série d'aides financières destinées aux aînés qui travaillent, bon nombre d'entre eux ont été stupéfaits de constater que leur SRG avait été récupéré ou entièrement éliminé. Des députés de partout au Canada ont entendu des histoires déchirantes où des aînés admissibles au SRG, qui tentaient simplement de joindre les deux bouts, se sont retrouvés dans des situations financières de plus en plus précaires. Imaginez des PDG et des dirigeants de grandes entreprises qui, eux, ont reçu de l'aide gouvernementale sous forme de subventions salariales et qui se sont ensuite octroyé des primes sans que le gouvernement, qui refuse toujours de s'attaquer à ces inégalités, n'ait à intervenir.

Les néodémocrates ont exercé de fortes pressions sur ce dossier et, par conséquent, les aînés

qui ont subi des difficultés financières en raison des récupérations bénéficieront d'un paiement supplémentaire unique non imposable. Il faut assurer à nos aînés un avenir où nous n'aurons pas à revoir constamment les mesures qui leur sont offertes et à créer des politiques disparates pour régler les problèmes auxquels ils continuent d'être confrontés. Il y a beaucoup à faire pour que les aînés puissent vivre dans la dignité et c'est pourquoi nous préconisons la création d'un comité consultatif sur les pensions chargé d'élaborer un plan à long terme pour améliorer la Sécurité de la vieillesse afin qu'elle suive l'inflation. Nous devons également augmenter le SRG de façon permanente, et pour toutes les personnes âgées admissibles, pas seulement celles des plus de 75 ans, afin de s'assurer que les personnes âgées qui en dépendent ne tombent pas dans la pauvreté lorsque l'inflation augmente.

Les aînés ont travaillé fort pour construire ce pays, et nous devons redoubler d'efforts pour eux.

CHADWIC HOME, FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE. Offers shelter, emotional support, and information for women and their children who are in crisis situations. We have a Toll Free Crisis Line which is staffed 24 hours a day. We can arrange for free transportation to the Centre for women who live in the Algoma/Chapleau area. We also offer support to women who live in the communities of Chapleau, White River, Dubreuilville, and Hornepayne through our Outreach Program. Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services. They have made incredible, selfless sacrifices to care for the sickest Ontarians during the pandemic. But unfortunately, too many nurses have already burned out and had to walk away for the good of their family and personal wellbeing because their working conditions are so bad. There are so few nurses on every shift that they're always run off their feet.

Doug Ford must immediately revoke his low-wage policy, Bill 124, and show nurses the respect they deserve.

The job retention announcement by the Ford government is nowhere near what nurses deserve. On the contrary, it's an insult that Doug Ford is turning a retention bonus into an election gimmick. And while it does little to retain nurses, it does nothing at all to recruit new nurses or return nurses who have already left. Nurses deserve the cheque Ford is sending them — but they also deserve a lot more. Ford fails to recognize that Ontario nurses care for patients and keep our health system functioning. Our nurses deserve recognition and better pay too.

A health care system without enough nurses is a broken system. It just won't work! For decades the situation has been getting worse.

Fortunately, however, the NDP has a plan to fix it.

They know that quality care leads to quality of life, better health and overall prosperity and happiness.
