Frustration shown with electricity costs:Mantha

A

s I travel across AlgomaManitoulin I continue to hear your frustration with rising electricity costs. This week at Queen's Park New Democrat leader Andrea Horwath unveiled our plan to cut hydro waste and pass the savings on via $100 rebate. Ontarians are paying the highest electricity prices in Canada and working families are having trouble keeping up. New Democrats plan to cut waste in

Ontario's electricity system by using three simple steps. By stopping the $1 billion annual subsidy of electricity exports to jurisdictions like New York and Michigan and by taking Ontario hydro sales out of the hands of speculative energy traders is a simple first step. Capping executive pay and cutting down on waste and duplication by merging Ontario's hydro agencies would be our second cost saving

measure. And lastly, stopping private power giveaways and having Ontario's Auditor conduct an immediate review of all private power contracts in the wake of the $1-billion gas plant scandal. We all know that families have been footing the bill for the sale of discount electricity to the US, as Ontario has handed out $1-billion to private companies and Wall Street energy traders to produce excess electricity and ship it to

America at a loss. This needs to stop, middle class families in this province have been paying to light up cities over the border and it's time Ontarians saw the benefits. Also this week the liberal government announced new accountability measures, something New Democrats have been calling on for years. We will be looking closely at any legislation to come. It seems more like a political Cont’d on P.2

partner in Niska North and has extensive work experience in the forest resource sector. Mr. Lindquist, who originally hails from Dryden, Ontario has been in our community since 1987 when he moved here to work for Chapleau Forest Products as operations forester. Kevin graduated from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and worked in several northern towns (Sioux Lookout, Ignace, White River, Wawa) before moving to Chapleau. Kevin started a consulting company in 1990 and continued that work until starting the Niska North sawmill project in 2006. He is well

known in forestry circles in Ontario, having consulted for many companies and the Provincial Government. Kevin and his wife Susan have raised three children in Chapleau, and are no strangers to the youth activities in our community. Sixteen years in the minor hockey program, eight in figure skating, plus gymnastics, skiing, curling, soccer, baseball and school sports. Kevin continues volunteer work in the community as President of the Chapleau Curling Club, and past President / Chair of the Chapleau Economic Development Corporation (CEDC).

The opportunity to sit as councillor for the duration of this municipal term was seen as a great opportun i t y. K e v i n h a d already been thinking about running in the next municipal election and the next eight months will provide valuable insight to the position. He is very concerned about the overall health of Chapleau which, like many northern towns, is facing economic hardship as its tax base dwindles with a drop in population. Kevin is also concerned about the social health of the community and will work to maintain social and recreational activities for all ages. He will also work hard

Newest Chapleau Councillor Kevin Lindquist to maintain a strong forest industry, ensure that the Borden gold project moves forward

in the best interest of our community, and support our important rail industry.
