What did we do at the Chapleau Best Start Hub in 2013? day.

I

often get asked, “What is the Best Start Hub” and “What do you do there”? Here are some of the exciting programs and services that were offered by the staff at the Chapleau Best Start Hub in 2013. We started off the year by celebrating Family Literacy Day by promoting a “Get Caught Reading Contest” and offering special literacy based circle with games and special activities. We also had lunch with families and had alphabet soup. We continued our Tumble Gym program as children were enjoying the physical activity.

We began planning special activities on Saturdays as we noticed more school age children were attending. Every Saturday we plan different games, creative arts and activities. To celebrate C h a p l e a u ' s Wi n t e r Carnival and Family Day we had a special outside play day. We built snow sculptures, painted in the snow and went sliding. In March we celebrated March Break with special activities planned each d a y. A c t i v i t i e s included outside play,

face painting, games, movie night and a pj day. The Hub invited a social worker from the family health team to offer a workshop for parents and discuss the importance of selfcare. Parents enjoyed a dinner together before the workshop to create a more relaxing atmosphere. An Easter egg hunt was held at the Hub. The daycare and Hub families participated and a special visitor hopped over to visit children and hand out special treats. The Easter bunny also paid a visit to all the JK/SK classrooms on the same

Spring brought a busy time to the Hub. The Hub offered a Kids Can Cook program for children 9-12 years of age. The program was held once a week for three weeks and taught children the basics of cooking. Speech pathologist John Stark offered a workshop for parents about the importance of early language development and offered parents tools to encourage early language development. For Earth Day the Hub focused on teaching families ways to take care of our earth. Children planted vegetable seeds to be left at the Hub for our container garden event. The Hub once again participated in the community's education week Pow Wow. Staff assisted with the Pow Wow's festivities and Hub families attended the Pow Wow and took part in the celebrations. The Hub was invited to take part in a Welcome

to Kindergarten event at the Chapleau Public School. The Hub offered a presentation to parents about the importance of school readiness programs. Parents received information and registration packages for the Hubs school readiness program. The Hub planned a mother's day tea at the Centre. Moms received a special gift of home made body scrub and enjoyed tea and desserts with their children. Baby Picasso was a huge hit at babies' afternoon. Babies explored colours, textures and tastes through some wonderful messy play. The Hub partnered with DSB to offer a container garden event. The event was held at the Pine street apartments in the parking lot. Families got to plant a cucumber and tomatoes plant to take home. Families also enjoyed a free BBQ. There were 40 adults and 39 children that

attended the event. The Hub once again participated in the Chapleau Service Provider Open House/Safe Kids Day. Service providers spent the afternoon discussing their programs. The Open House was then open to the public in the evening. Our two-week school readiness program was held in the morning at the Hub, with 12 children registering for the program. In July and August we planned special outdoor activities like a teddy bear picnic and water play days. September brought with it Grandparents Day, which was celebrated with a Saturday morning of activities. Even families that did not bring a grandparent with them were able to make and bring home special creative arts for their grandparents. The Hub planned a random car seat inspection with the Cont’d on P.6

Put an end to Hydro One billing nightmares in the north: NDP

D

uring Question Period today Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called on the Liberal government to put an end to Hydro One billing nightmares for northerners. “ O n t a r i o families are having a hard enough time paying their actual hydro bills

without getting dinged for hundreds and sometimes thousands of extra dollars. Hydro One promis ed to fix the errors, but people are still being overbilled. Hydro One promised refunds, but people haven’t seen them,” said Horwath. As the Premier and the Minister of Energy downplayed the impact of Hydro One’s

incoherent billing practices, the NDP Leader raised the plight of two northern ratepayers hard-hit by billing errors. “ S i m o n e Laferrière is a resident of Timmins. Her normal hydro bill is about $350 a month. This January, she received a bill that was three times that amount,” said Horwath.

“Ina Lamoureux from Englehart was hit with not one, not two, but six bills, all on the same day. Hydro One had already tried to clear out her bank account last summer with a $1,500 bill that they admit was an error. However, they still will not give Ina her money back.” Horwath said that people who are

already paying the price for cancelled gas plants, failed private power schemes and subsidized power exports have a simple question for this Premier: “When will the government stop overcharging on their hydro bills and give them back the money that they are owed?”
