Retirement of Longtime Teacher & Coach By Gwendolyn Mcknight n education career that has spanned six decades and several generations has come to its’ conclusion with the retirement of Mrs. Ellen Jardine from Chapleau Elementary and Secondary School and the Algoma District School Board. Perhaps the most telling indication of how much she was valued and will be missed was the tremendous outpouring of messages from former students on a Facebook post started by her daughter Whitney. Hundreds of well wishes from former students, teachers and coaches she has worked with in the past, as well as parents who appreciated how much she has done over the years for their children flooded the page. Words like role model, mentor, positive influence, and dedication were used along with many references to volleyball and basketball teams, practices, tournaments and road trips. She touched many lives through sport. Her motto, education through sport, is one she clearly was able to achieve as you read the many posts from former athletes who say their best memories of high school are of times spent in the gym learning skills, teamwork, building confidence and determination. She was described as being “amazing to work with” and “always there for us when we needed to chat” and there is no Long Term better tribute to a teacher Forecast than, “If it weren’t for Thursday you helping me, I High -8 Low -18 wouldn’t be where I am today.” Friday High -7 Throughout her Low -17 career Ellen has been Saturday instrumental in promot-

ing sport not only in Chapleau, but in communities all along the North Shore. She has been a key member of NSSSAA, the sport governing body that provides opportunities to student athletes from Chapleau to Thunder Bay, spending countless hours volunteering as a coach, referee and executive member and was recognized for these contributions as a recipient of the Pete Beach Award. Nominated by her peers, the award is presented annually to one person who exemplifies the qualities of Pete Beach, a former Executive Director of OFSAA who dedicated his life to sport and to helping others achieve their full potential, not just as an athlete, but as a person. Ellen was also recognized recently by OSSTF when she received the Excellence in Education Award which is presented annually to a member who has made an outstanding contribution to secondary school education. In addition to her role as teacher and coach within Chapleau High School Ellen has also acted as the Health and Safety and OSSTF representative for mPhoto a n y y eKari a r s Luhtasaari where her knowledge and expertise have been called upon time and again. Enough cannot be said about the many contributions Ellen has made not only in our school, our community and to the lives of student athletes all along the North Shore. Her 43year career should be recognized not only for its longevity, but for her tireless

dedication to the pursuit of education through sport. She would tell y o u t h a t Chapleau High School has felt like home away from home, and the staff and students like family. A very fortunate home and family we have been indeed. Wishing you all the best Ellen, and knowing you, the to-do list will be long, and the adventures many! Enjoy your retirement!
