March 8th is International Women’s Day

E

stablished in 1977 by the U n i t e d Nations, a resolution was adopted inviting its members to designate a date for Women's rights and

international peace. In Canada, March 8th is the designated day for International Women's Day. This special day provides an opportunity to reflect

on the progress made to advance women's equality, to assess the challenges facing women in contemporary society, to consider future steps and of course to celebrate

the gains made in these areas. This special day encourages Canadians to join in the journey towards gender equality and help to map out enduring strategies for achiev-

ing it. IWD is about remembering the battles long fought to build a society that is just and fair to all its members, a society in w h i c h d i v e r s i t y,

t o l e r a n c e , s a f e t y, social justice and equality between women and men is a given. It is about celebrating what women have done, are doing and can do.

Great Northern Ride comes thru Chapleau

L

ast Sunday, 70 snowmobile riders from the Brantford area headed to Sudbury for the start of a six-day 1,600 km ride through Northern Ontario in support of a number of local charities including Lansdowne Children's Centre. This is the 14th year that this event, The Great Northern Ride, is taking place. The event started in February of 2001 when thirteen riders rode from Huntsville to Sudbury and back – a trip of about 500 kilometers. It originated when a group

of Rotarians, led by Bob Caissie were looking for another way to raise money and deliver on the Rotarian mission to help local youth. It was a great combination of a love for snowmobiling, the outdoors and fellowship. It has grown, from the first year when $32,000 was raised to the most recently completed 2013 ride that travelled to Quebec and generated an amazing $165,000. It has grown because it is truly a unique experience. “Riders return with a friend because they were looking for and received the sledding trip of a lifetime” says Bob Caissie who still takes a leadership role in making the ride a reality. The goal this year is to raise $ 1 5 0 , 0 0 0 f o r Lansdowne's Every Kid Counts program and other children's charities. Caissie says that if the riders are successful, it will put their 13-year fundraising total at more

than $1.5 million. Over its 13 year history the Great Northern Ride has covered over 20,000 kilometers of snowmobile terrain. The participants have been from Cold Lake Alberta through Northern Saskatchewan to Manitoba, all of Ontario and most of Quebec, and even as far east as Newfoundland. The success of this event is due to the dedication of a wonderful group of men and the support of the Rotary Club of Brantford. “These riders, they love to ride and they can do it for a lot less than this. They do it for the kids,” says Caissie. Lansdowne Children's Centre provides essential services to children with special needs and their families. This includes children with physical, developmental and communications

challenges. The Centre supports over 2,000 children and families each year in Brantford as well as Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk counties. Lansdowne's Executive Director, RitaMarie Hadley notes that “When these snowmobile riders sled long distances through northern Ontario raising funds for children with

special needs it lets Lansdowne offer recreation to young people who otherwise face barriers and tells them and their families that they matter and should be included. It's inspiring to have this group of riders and Bob as their leader sustaining this commitment in this caring community.” The riders will began their trip in

Sudbury on February 23 and rode from there to Timmins, on to Hearst, then Chapleau, Elliot Lake and finally returning to Sudbury on February 28.
