Second Bishop Of Hearst-Moosonee Appointed

T

he Holy Father has appointed a new Bishop for HearstMoosonee in the person of Most Reverend Pierre-Olivier Tremblay, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Bishop Tremblay is 51 years old and has been a Bishop since 2018, serving as Auxiliary Bishop of TroisRivières and for the last year as Diocesan Administrator there.

When he was informed of his nomination, His Excellency was in the Holy Land and has just returned from overseas; his flight from Newark to Montreal was cancelled on Wednesday, so he was due to arrive back in TroisRivières last night. We have spoken on

the phone and he has prepared a greeting for all the members of the diocesan family (attached); I am also enclosing a short summary of his life and ministry.

You will also find the text of a Press Release in which I express my joy at this appointment. It will be posted on our website; you may share it as widely you wish.

Bishop Tremblay is due in Hearst early next week at which time we will make plans for his installation in Our Lady of the Assumption cathedral in August. After this brief stay, he will return to Quebec to prepare for his move to the Bishop's Residence in midAugust.

Great aunt to Rowan, Charlotte, Parker, Preston and Pierce Over the course of her life, she made many lifelong friends, whether it be working at the MNR, LCBO, Chapleau Ambulance Service or the OPP. Lisa took great pride in her house painting skills all throughout the community and never hesitated to lend a helping hand nor was she afraid of hard work. She was an avid traveler, loved her coffee club and was always up for a good game of cards or bingo. Lisa loved hunting with her family, 4-wheeling and berry picking. Lisa always treasured her time in Island Lake while growing up and is still connected to many of the Island Lake friends.

Later in life, she found her happy place, the Camp, where she enjoyed sipping a ceaser by the fire, watching the sunset and listening to the loons. Auntie Weezie will be missed by many. Memorial donations made to the Chapleau Health Centre Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family. At Lisa's request cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held in the Fall.

The noisier a bear is, the less dangerous it is provided you don't approach it. These are all warning signals a bear gives to let you know you are too close.

Bear attacks are rare. However, a bear may attack if: ! The bear wants morespace. ! It perceives you to be athreat, especially to its cubsor food. ! It is a predatory bear. Apredatory bear approachessilently and may continueto approach regardless ofyour attempts to deter it byyelling, use of bear sprayor throwing objects.

Collision Leads To Impaired Charges On June 2, 2022 at approximately 7:37 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (O P P) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 129 in Daoust Township.

Through investigation, the driver was determined to be impaired by alcohol. As a result, Ian SALOMONIE, 22 years-ofage, of Ottawa was charged with the following: · Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), and · Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 14, 2022 in Chapleau.

Individual Charged Following Human Trafficking Investigation One person has been charged with eight criminal offences during an ongoing Provincial Human Trafficking Intelligence-led Joint Forces Strategy (IJFS) investigation.

Information received by the IJFS, on June 20, 2020, led to an investigation into allegations victims were being trafficked. Earlier this week, an individual was located at a City of Greater Sudbury hotel with two females, including one who is underage. The females were provided with aid through a victim services agen cy and are now in a place of safety.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, 26-year-old Deshawn M C K E N Z I E from Toronto, is charged with offences contrary to the

Criminal Code of Canada as follows: · Trafficking in Persons under 18 years of age section 279.011; · Trafficking in Persons (adult) section 279.01; · Material benefit resulting from trafficking in persons under 18 years of age section 279.02(2); · Material benefit resulting from trafficking in persons section 279.02; · Advertising sexual services section 286.4; · Withholding or destroying documents in relation to trafficking in persons under 18

She also noted the "new" Chapleau Civic Centre, Cedar Grove Lodge Chapleau, Recreation Complex, water plant, and of course the replacement of the horseshoe bridge with a new bridge and pedestrian overpass, among other changes.

Yes, the physical face of Chapleau changed dramatically in the 1970s --. And, of course there have been more changes since.

However, after her walkabout, 'Virginia' accepted that while the physical face of Chapleau changed, "... the greatest resource of Chapleau has always been its people. I looked forward to seeing all my old friends, those who are still here and those who came for the reunion. "Yes Virginia, there is a Chapleau. The physical face has changed, but not the hearts of the people."

I wrote Virginia's story for the souvenir newspaper marking the CHS 60th reunion and was living in Chapleau at the time and teaching at the high school. I have not changed my view one bit about the community and its people.

Let me go back to Derik Hodgson for a moment and give him the last word. At one time Derik worked for Canadian Press and came to know Lloyd 'Sparrow' McDonald, who was with CP for many years, born in Chapleau, graduated from Chapleau High School, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Here is Derik's comment on one of Chapleau's greatest resources: "Lloyd McDonald. Legendary. Remember him working the rim at CP Toronto. Gruff. No nonsense and wonderful."

Aki Kikinomakaywin Program Offers Hands-on STEAM Learning Opportunities for Indigenous Youth in Northern Ontario NORDIK Institute is launching its new Aki Kikinomakaywin (Learning on the land) program, which offers hands-on, Indigenous science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) training for Indigenous youth.

The program will run for one week in July at Lakehead University and Confederation College in Thunder Bay. Aki Kikinomakaywin is a women- and

Indigenous-led program that teaches Indigenous youth from Northern Ontario First Nation communities Indigenous ways of knowing and being through learning on the land through the use of western science techniques.

Aki Kikinomakaywin will be running a week-long camp in Thunder Bay at Lakehead University and Confederation College this summer 2022. The program is free to youth ages 12-14 and covers all costs for accommodation, transportation, and food. In future years, programs will be run in both Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.

Youth participating in the program will learn from local Elders, Water Walkers, and Knowledge Holders about Indigenous water laws and governance, as well as how to complete an Indigenous Impact Assessment using Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

Youth will learn how to code sensors to collect environmental data and learn how western science techniques can be used to support Indigenous science, while also becoming more confident in university and college settings.

“The Elders have said that we need to teach our young on the land. Mother Earth is our education system, she is our pharmacy, our kitchen, our everything. By learning on the land, our young will come to understand she is our everything” said Dr. Susan Bell-Chiblow, Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph, NORDIK Research Associate and, and Anishinaabekwe from Garden River First Nation, who is a CoLead to the program.

“The youth will learn that we all come from water and need to protect the waters. They will gain the understanding that water is life, is alive with spirit, and is medicine. They will understand that as Anishinaabek, we always did science. This will provide confidence in who they are and

potentially assist them in career decisions,” Dr. Chiblow said.

Aki Kikinomakaywin is led by an Advisory Group that is comprised of Indigenous women who are all leaders in the education field and their communities.

This Advisory Group is led by Marnie Yourchuk the Education Program Manager at Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council; Erin Desjardins is a Stewardship Intern at Matawa and Four Rivers, as well as an M.Sc. candidate at Lakehead University; Lisa Harris is the Coordinator of the Niijii Indigenous Mentorship program at Lakehead University; Mary Wabano-McKay is the Vice President of Nyaagaaniid, Anishinabe Initiatives, Equity and Student Success at Algoma University; Nicole Nicolas-Bayer is the Director of Mukwa Waakaa'igan at Algoma University; Carolyn Hepburn is the Dean of Indigenous Studies and Academic Upgrading at Sault College, and lastly Jasmine Baxter is an Environmental Technician with Matawa and Four Rivers who is also completing her Honours B.Sc. in Environmental Science at Lakehead University.

Dr. Gayle Broad, Professor Emerita at Algoma University and Research Associate at NORDIK Institute, has also played an integral role in developing the program.

Aki Kikinomakaywin is also fortunate to be partnering with Water First and Let's Talk Science to provide engaging water-focused and coding hands-on western science activities.

“Aki Kikinomakaywin is an important program aiming to support Ontario's northern First Nation youth in learning about careers in STEAM,” said Haley MacLeod, a Ph.D. Candidate at Lakehead University and a Co-Lead on the program.

“Allowing youth to learn from local Elders and Knowledge Holders will provide a unique opportunity to get youth excited about their own knowledge systems and future career opportunities. I am excited to help get youth on to the land and in the lab and to provide more education opportunities in the North,” MacLeod said.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have responded to 32 collisions with moose so far this year Two collisions involved police cruisers, which were travelling on Highway 101 between Wawa and Chapleau.

While the vehicles had significant damage, the officers involved in both crashes were not injured.

More than 100 fatal crashes in Ontario so far this year, highest count in a decade Ontario trucker urges drivers to slow down to avoid collisions with horse-drawn buggies OPP Const. Ashley Nickle said more than half of the vehicle collisions with moose in the region were in May. Nickle said the spring is the worst time of year for moose collisions because: They lick the winter salt on the side of the highways.

They migrate to more open areas so they can escape biting insects.

"We are asking drivers to slow down," Nickle said. "Speed is the biggest factor. It reduces your reaction time and it increases the force of impacts if there was a collision."

Adult moose can weigh more than 450 kilograms, and can cause significant damage and fatal injuries if a vehicle collides with them.

So far, no one has died in a collision with the big animals this year, Nickle said.

ÉSC Trillium students deepen their knowledge of the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures On June 21, as part of initiatives held to highlight National Indigenous Peoples D a y, s t u d e n t s a t É c o l e secondaire catholique Trillium in Chapleau had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures. During the day, April Fortin, a grade 12 student at the school and member of the Mississagi First Nation,

joined former ÉSC Trillium students, Katrina Keech and Shyanne Fortin who are also members of the Mississagi First Nation, to dance and sing in front of his school. These three young Aboriginal women were able to inspire students and staff members with their pride in their identity. This performance left an admirable impact within the school community.

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the summer solstice, June 21. It's a special occasion to learn more about the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples Learning about Indigenous Peoples, places and experiences is a step forward each Canadian can take on the path to reconciliation.

Ontario NDP elects Peter Tabuns to be interim leader NDP MPP Peter Tabuns has been elected by the NDP's provincial council to be the party's interim leader.

“The NDP is honoured that the people of Ontario have asked us, once again, to form the Official Opposition, and I'm humbled to have an opportunity to lead the party for a time,” said Tabuns.

“The Ontario NDP Caucus is energized and committed to holding the Ford government to account. It's a difficult time for workers whose wages are falling behind. For patients waiting far too long for care. For our parents in long-term care and the kids who need more help to get back on track in school. And for everyone worried about the climate crisis. We're on their side.

We're going to fight to rebuild health care and long-term care for them. We're going to fight for education for them. We're going to fight to lift wages up, and bring costs down for them. And we're going to fight against Conservative cuts that would hurt them.”

The provincial council will hold another meeting to determine the rules and leadership election date.

This year's Canada Day celebrations are returning with a bang! As we prepare to enjoy the relative normalcy and raise a glass to the outstanding accomplishments and achievements of our nation, it is important to acknowledge this significant date in an atmosphere of appreciation.

Like all of you, I am extremely thrilled to be able to attend the celebrations offline. We have been living in exceptionally challenging times while the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our lives. Now that hospitalizations have dropped and most limitations have lifted, it is time to express our gratitude to healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and researchers who were on the frontline battling the novel coronavirus. Thank you for saving countless lives and contributing to a safe return to normal life.

As we return to our habitual Canada Day festivities, which have mostly been on hold for the past two years, we look forward to marking another of our nation's major milestones. This year we honour the 155th birthday of Confederation - a celebration of Canada's proud and prosperous legacy. We are a nation that prides itself on its diverse rich cultures and heritage, significant achievements, as well as our

This Canada Day has a Special Meaning notable Canadian heroes. Indeed, Canadians have many reasons to be proud: we are the place of origin for some of the most substantial discoveries in history, we have made great contributions and sacrifices to democracy and peace around the world and, we have outstanding sporting achievements.

From Sir Frederick Banting's spirit of lifesaving innovation to Terry Fox's unique determination, to Wayne Gretzky's versatility and athleticism Canadians inspire others to make a difference. It would not be an exaggeration to say that we have improved our world.

As we celebrate what it means to be Canadian, let us remember, it's important to understand how fortunate we are, particularly against the background of current global developments. We are privileged to live in a society respecting fundamental values of human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, and equality. As the world is facing an unprecedented number of crises, we have united and open our hearts and homes to those in need. It is something to be proud of beyond the shadow of a doubt!

Unfortunately, Canada's history has some shameful chapters, which we collectively observed as the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves of Indigenous children at residential schools revealed the horrific truths about our past. It is undeniable that Canada's troubled legacy of colonialism, racism and discrimination accentuates our flaws, but it also acts as a powerful stimulus to continue working together to advance our efforts to heal the wounds of a dark

past. It is never too late to make things right, and Canada Day presents an opportunity to reconnect with our loved ones and our community, strengthen existing relationships and form new bonds as we continue building a better future.

Here in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, countless community celebrations are set to happen across the riding – which includes flag raising, markets, barbecues, duck and cardboard boat races, beach activities, bike decorating contests, dances, fireworks and so much more.

There are also a number of special activities included in this year's festivities such as: - the renaming of the marina in Assiginack Township in memory of OPP Constable Mark Hovingh who was killed in the line of duty -Centennial celebration activities in Fauquier, Moonbeam, Kapuskasing & Hearst -recognition of three Seniors of the Year by the Town of Thessalon - a live auction fundraiser in support of Ukraine in Little Current, with all of the proceeds going to the charity AMURT who is providing onthe-ground relief to people affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine – it's an opportunity to praise Canada Day by spreading kindness worldwide.

There is so much to be thankful for as we reflect on our shared past, reassess the present and recognize the diversity and beauty of our country.

Let's all take a moment to appreciate and celebrate the things we value and are so proud of.

La fête du Canada a une signification toute particulière cette année Cette année, nous célébrerons la fête du Canada en grand! Alors que nous nous préparons à profiter du retour à une certaine normalité et que nous commémorons les réussites et les réalisations remarquables de notre nation, nous devons nous assurer de faire preuve d'une certaine dose d'appréciation.

Comme vous tous, je me réjouis de pouvoir célébrer en personne. La pandémie de COVID-19 a perturbé nos vies et cela a été très éprouvant.

Maintenant que les hospitalisations ont diminué et que la plupart des restrictions ont été levées, le moment est venu d'exprimer notre gratitude envers les travailleurs de la santé, les médecins, les infirmières, les pharmaciens et les chercheurs qui étaient aux premières lignes à combattre ce nouveau coronavirus.

Vous avez sauvé d'innombrables vies et avez contribué à ce retour sécuritaire à une vie normale et nous vous en remercions.

Alors que nous reprenons nos célébrations habituelles pour la fête du Canada, qui ont été sur pause pendant les deux dernières années, nous sommes ravis de commémorer un autre jalon important pour notre pays. Cette année marque le 155e anniversaire de la Confédération; c'est le moment de souligner cet héritage prospère dont nous sommes fiers. En tant que nation, nous sommes particulièrement fiers de la diversité de nos cultures et de notre patrimoine, de nos grandes réalisations et de nos héros remarquables. En effet, les Canadiennes et les Canadiens ont de nombreuses raisons d'être fiers : nous sommes le lieu d'origine de plusieurs des plus grandes découvertes historiques et nous avons apporté des contributions majeures et avons consenti d'énormes sacrifices pour la démocratie et la paix

dans le monde. Nos réussites sportives sont également nombreuses. Les innovations de sir Frederick Banting ont sauvé des vies, la détermination de Terry Fox était sans pareil sans oublier la polyvalence et l'athlétisme de Wayne Gretzky. Les Canadiennes et les Canadiens incitent les autres à faire une différence. Force est de constater que nous avons fait de ce monde, un monde meilleur.

Alors que nous célébrons notre identité en tant que Canadiennes et Canadiens, il faut aussi prendre conscience de la chance que nous avons, tout particulièrement quand on pense aux événements qui ont cours actuellement ailleurs dans le monde. Nous sommes privilégiés de vivre dans une société qui respecte les valeurs fondamentales que sont la dignité humaine, les droits de la personne, la liberté, la démocratie et l'égalité. Alors que le monde est confronté à un nombre sans précédent de crises, nous avons tendu la main aux gens dans le besoin et nous leur avons ouvert nos cœurs et nos maisons. Nous pouvons certainement en être fiers.

Malheureusement, l'histoire du Canada contient également des chapitres honteux dont nous avons été témoins lorsque des centaines de sépultures anonymes d'enfants autochtones ont été découvertes dans des pensionnats indiens, révélant ainsi certaines réalités horribles de notre passé. Ces antécédents troublants de colonialisme, de racisme et de discrimination viennent mettre en relief nos lacunes, mais ils sont également une source de motivation qui nous amènera à travailler ensemble pour guérir les plaies provenant de ce passé sombre. Il n'est jamais trop tard pour faire la bonne chose et la fête du Canada s'avère justement l'occasion de nous unir à nos proches et aux membres de notre communauté, de

solidifier nos liens et d'en créer de nouveau alors que nous travaillons à édifier un monde meilleur.

Ici à Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, d'innombrables célébrations communautaires sont prévues partout dans la circonscription : des levées du drapeau, des marchés, des barbecues, des courses de bateau en carton et de canards, des activités à la plage, des compétitions de décoration de bicyclettes, des danses, des feux d'artifice et bien plus encore.

Il y aura aussi un certain nombre d'activités spéciales, notamment : - La marina de la municipalité d'Assiginack qui sera renommée à la mémoire de l'agent de la PPO Mark Hovingh qui est décédé dans l'exercice de ses fonctions; - Les célébrations du centenaire à Fauquier, Moonbeam, Kapuskasing et Hearst; - La reconnaissance de trois personnes âgées de l'année dans la municipalité de Thessalon; - Une encan pour recueillir des fonds pour l'Ukraine à Little Current. Toutes les sommes reçues seront remises à l'organisme de bienfaisance AMURT qui fournit sur place de l'aide aux personnes touchées par l'invasion de l'Ukraine par la Russie. Quelle belle façon de célébrer la fête du Canada que de transmettre notre sollicitude ailleurs dans le monde.

Alors que nous réfléchissons à notre passé commun, que nous réévaluons le présent et que nous reconnaissons la diversité et la beauté de notre pays, il faut reconnaître que nous avons de nombreuses raisons d'être reconnaissants. Je nous invite tous à prendre un instant pour vraiment apprécier et reconnaître toutes ces choses qui nous sont chères et dont nous sommes si fiers. Bonne fête du Canada!
