RYAM donates $10,000 to Hospital Foundation

he Chapleau General Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce a $10,000 donation from Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM), which will help support Services de santé de Chapleau Health Services' (SSCHS) Grow Your Own fund.

“Grow Your Own is our health care staff recruitment and retention fund.

Recruitment and Retention are top priorities at SSCHS, as well as one of the top fundraising priorities for the Hospital Foundation,” said Foundation Coordinator Lindsay Briscoe.

Through this fund, SSCHS will aim to assist those who are currently pursuing, entering, or considering a career in a health care field.

"We are pleased to help support an

initiative that will lead to sustaining the health and wellbeing of our community," said Tim Yanni, General Manager of the company's Chapleau sawmill, “It is more important than ever that our community retain caring, qualified and capable healthcare professionals.”

Michael J. Morris Although Chapleau was established in 1885 with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway secondary education did not begin until later. Its first High School opened in 1922. In fact, according to the late George Evans writing in Snapshots of Chapleau's Past the municipality passed a bylaw on June 22, 1922, to establish a high school district.

George noted that "In the late 19th century, the Province of Ontario recognized that elementary education was necessary but, after the onset of adolescence, formal education wasn't required for most children. " Everyone understood that after mastering the “three Rs” in elementary school, the young male teenager would enter the “real world” and learn a trade. The female teenager, of course, would learn her trade, that of homemaker and mother, at home."

However after 1871, the law required at least four months of schooling for all children between the ages of 7 and 12. George wrote.

The following is taken from George's column on the founding of Chapleau High School. With plans for the celebration of the school's 100th anniversary in 2022 I thought it important to provide an "in the beginning" article. Thanks to George It is possible to do so.

(Later, the school-leaving age was raised to 14.) All of this was highly theoretical: in Ontario, in 1900, only 57% of the youngsters who should have been attending school were in fact doing so.

Chapleau council passed by-law creating school district for "real high school" on June 22, 1922 In Chapleau, elementary education, in one form, or another, had been available at least since 1886 and a properly constituted public school board came into existence in 1891. Highschool education, on the other hand, had to wait until the next century.

Secondary education slipped in through a back door, an institution called a Continuation School. Throughout the province, from 1896 on, cash-strapped rural school boards began to offer the Fifth Book or First Form (i.e., grade 9) as an add-on to their elementary school programme.

Other high-school years were added, and the Continuation School came into being as a way of avoiding putting out money for a new building to house a real high school.

In Chapleau, at some undetermined time, the four-room public school (opened in 1902) started Chapleau's Continuation School by offering First Form. By 1914, the Continuation School was moved to the newly completed Town Hall and soon Second and Third Forms (grades 10 and 11) were added to the programme.

By 1915 or 1917, the Continuation School had outgrown its accommodation or its welcome at the Town Hall and moved to two back rooms on the second floor of Ecole Sacré Coeur.

The addition of Fourth Form made grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 available to the students of Chapleau.

Sacré Coeur announced that beginning in September 1922, it needed those rooms, a n d t h e Continuation School faced its third eviction.

Meanw hile, provincewide, the attitude toward

First school in Chapleau secondary education was evolving. By the 1920s, Ontario's government and people had come to accept secondary education as a desirable part of the formation of a useful, adult citizen. By that time a majority of Ontario's teenagers were attending high school.

In 1921, the Adolescent School Act raised the legal school-leaving age to 16.

Chapleau decided that it was time to have a real high school. On June 22, 1922, the Municipality passed a by-law making Chapleau a High School District and Chapleau's Continuation School passed into history.

Last year I wrote how Canada Day is special no matter the circumstances. It is a sentiment I maintain, but this year will test the idea even more as early summer cancellations confirm we are still working through the pandemic. This year we will celebrate our national birthday drawing on experiences from the last year and half and with more than a little hope that this will be the last one hampered by Covid-19.

There is no doubt this year's festivities will be subdued in a manner similar to last year's. As I pen this some jurisdictions are cancelling Canada Day celebrations and others are considering how they should proceed, not just based on the pandemic, but also on the manner in which many Canadians are struggling to understand our history just a few weeks after the discovery of the remains of 215 children in unmarked graves on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops, BC. While some understand the event was an expected outcome of work that was intended to discover those very children, others seem to have been caught off-guard. As that same endeavour is

Canada is always changing carried on in other locations, more children will be found. It is important work that will facilitate healing on all sides and will lead to a stronger Canada in the long run. That kind of nation building is uncomfortable to be certain, but those moments can lead to growth in ways that comfort can never do. We like to think we are a can-do nation and have proven that on so many fronts.

This is another chance for us to showcase that trait.

Even though it is a national celebration, Canada Day is also a reflection of our communities.

Most celebrations take place at a community level and have a local flare to them. Again, this year we will take these down to the micro level in households, but we can celebrate our communities all the same. So many of you have spent the better part of the last year and a half doing as much as you can to support your locality. You have taken care of your neighbours in need and supported their businesses too. This wasn't unexpected, but we can celebrate it with certainty that we are caring and community minded.

But I won't lie, I'm just the same as everyone else. I miss the crowds and liveliness on display at our big community celebrations. I miss Canada Day crowds, Community Parades, PowWows, the multitude of interesting tourists that visit us, and all the trappings of our summers' past.

That's why I am doing what I can to help us reach the other side of the pandemic. I know you are as

well!

Last year I also wrote about the pace of the early days of the pandemic, the resurgence of hobbies, and the boom in home-improvement projects and immaculate yards. There were other positives that arose from the challenge that Covid presented and some will persist beyond the event.

It is said that the most dramatic change occurs when our backs are truly against the wall.

That's where they've been for the better part of 18 months and I am of the belief that we have changed.

I am hopeful that we will be more empathetic and understanding as we emerge from the pandemic. I see signs of that in the House of Commons where some politicians have expressed regret for intolerant positions that fostered fear and suspicion as a reflection of anti-Islamic sentiments. The terrible killing of a Muslim family in London shows the work of growth extends beyond Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples, but I am confident we are up for the job.

At the end of the day, Canada is an ever changing, growing and adaptable country. We are blessed with many advantages and are well placed to lead by example for a long time. We have work to do, but that isn't entirely new, and we have never shied away from a challenge yet. I can't imagine we will any time soon.

Le Canada est en constante évolution L'an dernier, j'écrivais que la fête du Canada était spéciale, peu importe les circonstances. Je le réitère, mais cette opinion sera mise à rude épreuve cette année : l'annulation des activités de l'été confirme que la pandémie n'est pas terminée. Cette année, nous célébrerons la fête nationale en nous inspirant des expériences des 18 derniers mois et en gardant espoir que ce soit la dernière compromise par la COVID-19.

Il ne fait aucun doute que les festivités seront encore soumises à des restrictions comparables à celles de l'an dernier. Au moment où j'écris ces lignes, certaines autorités annulent les célébrations de la fête du Canada, et d'autres s'interrogent sur ce qu'il convient de faire, et pas seulement en raison de la pandémie. De nombreux Canadiens ont du mal à comprendre notre histoire, quelques semaines seulement après la découverte des dépouilles de 215 enfants dans des tombes anonymes sur le terrain d'un ancien pensionnat à Kamloops, en Colombie-Britannique.

Si certains comprennent que des fouilles ont mené à la découverte attendue de ces enfants, d'autres semblent avoir été pris au dépourvu. Si des fouilles étaient réalisées ailleurs, on trouverait plus d'enfants. Il s'agit d'un travail important qui facilitera la guérison de tous et rendra ultimement le Canada plus fort. Certes, ces moments dans l'histoire, qui contribuent à l'édification du pays, nous dérangent, mais ils nous poussent à grandir

d'une manière que le réconfort ne pourra jamais faire. Nous aimons croire que le Canada est un pays qui se retrousse les manches et nous l'avons prouvé sur de nombreux fronts. Voici l'occasion de le prouver encore une fois.

Même s'il s'agit d'une célébration nationale, la fête du Canada est aussi la représentation de nos collectivités. La plupart des célébrations se déroulent localement et en ont la touche. Cette année encore, nous allons ramener les célébrations dans les ménages, mais nous pouvons tout de même mettre en valeur les localités de notre pays. Beaucoup d'entre vous ont passé la majeure partie de l'année et demie qui s'est écoulée à faire tout ce qui est possible pour soutenir leur localité. Vous avez pris soin de vos voisins dans le besoin et soutenu les entreprises. Il n'y a là rien d'inattendu, mais nous pouvons tout de même célébrer avec la certitude que nous sommes bienveillants et soucieux de la collectivité.

Je ne vais pas mentir, je suis comme tout le monde. La foule et l'animation qui régnait lors de nos grandes fêtes communautaires me manquent, tout comme les foules de la fête du Canada, les défilés communautaires, les pow-wow, la multitude de touristes intéressants et de tous les attraits de nos étés passés. C'est pourquoi je fais tout ce que je peux pour nous aider à surmonter la pandémie. Je sais que vous le faites aussi!

L'an dernier, j'ai également écrit sur le rythme des premiers jours de la pandémie, la

réapparition des passe-temps, l'essor des projets de rénovation et la frénésie du jardinage. La pandémie a aussi d'autres points positifs et certains perdureront au-delà de la pandémie.

On prétend que les changements les plus spectaculaires se produisent lorsque nous sommes acculés au mur. C'est ce que nous avons vécu la majeure partie des 18 derniers mois et je suis convaincu que nous avons changé. J'espère que nous ferons preuve de plus d'empathie et de compréhension une fois la pandémie passée. J'en vois des signes à la Chambre des communes, où certains politiciens ont exprimé des regrets d'avoir pris des positions marquées d'intolérance qui ont alimenté la peur et la suspicion, reflet de sentiments anti-islamiques. Le terrible meurtre d'une famille musulmane à London montre que le Canada doit s'ouvrir et travailler à sa relation avec les peuples autochtones et avec les autres aussi. Je suis néanmoins convaincu que nous sommes à la hauteur de la tâche.

En fin de compte, le Canada est un pays qui évolue toujours, qui grandit et qui est capable de s'adapter. Nous avons la chance de bénéficier de nombreux avantages et sommes bien placés pour donner l'exemple pendant longtemps. Nous avons fort à faire, mais ce n'est pas tout à fait nouveau, et nous n'avons encore jamais reculé devant un problème. Je ne pense pas que ce soit le cas de sitôt.

Chapleau Moments Chapleau St-Johns Residential School Cont’d from P.3 As good luck or good planning would have it, the Public School was about to move into a brand-new building (the core of the former Chapleau Public School) and that meant that the new Chapleau High School could start in the old Public-School building, where the Continuation School had begun. Unfortunately, when the new school year opened in September 1922, the new Public-School building was not ready to receive students.

CHS circa 1963. Dr Karl Hackstetter far right the principal From September 1922, until February 1923, the old four-room school housed two schools: the public school operated from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the high school came in and offered its programme from 1:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Then the Public School moved out and Chapleau High School at last had a building to itself.

In 1925, the old wooden, four-room building that Chapleau High School had inherited underwent a major renovation which added four rooms to the original school and encased the enlarged building in brick. And this remained the home of secondary education in Chapleau for forty-one more years, until June 1966.

In the 1970s it was demolished to make way for Chapleau's Civic Centre.

On the first day of school in September 1966, students and teachers entered the new Chapleau High School overlooking the town from a prominence on the west edge of town. It was a dream come true –the first building in Chapleau's history that had been designed and built expressly for secondary education.

The fact that the contractor's workers were still in the building did not really matter.

Maybe a reenactment from the first days of Chapleau High School in 1922 could be part of the program for the 100th anniversary. George as always provided insight into an important part of Chapleau history. My email is mikejmorris41 @outlook.com

The Chapleau residential school operated from 1907 to 1919 north of the town of Chapleau, ON. In 1920, a new school opened at a site south of Chapleau. In 1908, an Indian Affairs inspector said that seven of thirty-one children at the school had died in a three-month period, and parents temporarily stopped sending their children to the school. Thirteen years later, parents hired a lawyer stating that students were being cruelly treated. The school was damaged by a fire in 1944, and three years later a second fire caused further damage. The school closed in 1948.

CHADWIC HOME, FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE. Offers shelter, emotional support, and information for women and their children who are in crisis situations. We have a Toll Free Crisis Line which is staffed 24 hours a day. We can arrange for free transportation to the Centre for women who live in the Algoma/Chapleau area. We also offer support to women who live in the communities of Chapleau, White River, Dubreuilville, and Hornepayne through our Outreach Program. Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services.
