Make Chapleau Look Pretty Again

L

ast year, the Rotary Club of Chapleau sponsored the Chapleau Beautification contest and it proved to be pretty popular. The names of ten lucky participants were selected in a draw and won $100 gift certificates at local businesses. Because of the positive feedback that we received, the Rotary Club of Chapleau is sponsoring the 2022 Chapleau Beautification contest. There are a few changes to this year's contest. To improve the project this year, we are limiting the contest entries to front yards because if the beautification of Chapleau is the goal, beautification needs to be front facing. We will also ask participants to submit a before and after picture of their beautification project. Please note that regular yard maintenance such as raking a yard or mowing a lawn will not be considered as a beautification project. Think “curb appeal”. Rotarians reserve the right to disqualify entries if

they don't meet criteria. Tuija Berthelot's submission from last year Another important change involves the duration of the contest. The Rotary Club of Chapleau will accept entries until August 31, and then Rotarians will draw ten names from all entries. These ten winners will receive a $100 gift certificate to one of our local businesses. This gives residents of Chapleau the opportunity to plan and undertake work and make their homes and AFTER yards beautiful. Participants may BEFORE submit their before and after storefronts and businesses for pictures on the Chapleau Rotary Canada Day and the 100th anniversary of Facebook page. Chapleau High School. On the one hand, this Santa-like period encourages voters to ask questions and dream what could be. On the other hand, the flood of promises should be tempered by a touch of reality. I hope nobody believes in money trees. Every candidate should be interested in good government and, so, should be familiar with how a municipality functions financially and pays it's bills. One of Council's main responsibilities is financial planning and spending which is

finalized through budgets. Candidates should be familiar with the three basic budgets of every municipality. The OPERATING BUDGET deals with expenses similar to a household's; the day to day expenses repeated monthly. Operating budgets are consumed by such regular expenses as salaries, heat, hydro, equipment repair and maintenance, and social services. Annual costs are projected each year by determining annual spending patterns and accounting for yearly inflation rates. Basic provincial grants and property taxes cover these expenses. What about the big ticket items – you know the ones everyone notices as progress, paved road, new buildings, etc? Well, those are Cont’d on P.2
