Peace Park Volunteers Step Up Once Again for planting. This past weekend, volunteers continued with weeding and bed clearing, and annuals and perennials were planted. With Mona's retirement and the closure of Mona's Greenhouses, the annuals and perennials were purchased from our local Valu-Mart with funds from the Township of Chapleau.

On behalf of the citizens of Chapleau and visitors from near and from far who visit the park, thank you to Richard and Lynn Bignucolo, owners of the Valu-Mart for helping with the purchase and for supplying quality bedding plants and

he Louis Dubé Peace Park is a gem of an oasis in our town. Many people walk through the park, picnic at one of the available tables, sit on a bench to contemplate the view, have family and wedding pictures taken and enjoy the flowers and the shrubs. Let's take a moment to thank the gentleman who devoted much of his time to create and maintain this park, Mr. Louis Dubé. Over the years, this park was his labour of love and his way to give back to our community and it is our hope that the friends of Peace Park are able to honour his legacy by volunteering to maintain it.

For the past few Long Term years, friends of Peace Forecast Park have taken over to Thursday maintain this special High 23 place for all to enjoy. A Low 12 few weeks ago, Friday volunteers gathered on a High 21 Saturday to rake, weed, Low 11 clear and prepare beds Saturday High 23 Low 13 Sunday High 22 Low 11 Monday High 22 Low 8 Tuesday High 20 Low 10

thank you to the Township of Chapleau for earmarking funds for these plants. With this year's purchase, there were some flowers left over that were planted in the bed at the foot of the walking bridge.

I want to end this article by thanking all who came out to clean the park, weed the beds and plant the flowers, as well as the volunteers who will continue to maintain the park by weeding and watering throughout the summer.

What made Bill happy was; his annual trips to see the Spartans homecoming games, travelling, gardening, blueberry picking, making (and drinking) blueberry wine, “amusing” us with his horrible dad-jokes, and cruising in his ’66 Mustang convertible.He was loved, he will be missed, and he will never be forgotten.

Chapleau Moments

Exploring paths that few could ever find colouring outside the lines as St. John's deconsecrated

Michael J. Morris A few years ago now, I attended the 50th anniversary celebration for a Shared Ministry between the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada at Invermere, British Columbia.

It was an experiment that has worked and the celebration brought the Primate of the Anglican Church and Moderator of the United Church to rural British Columbia to be part of it.

In fact, while chatting with Archbishop John Privett of the Diocese of Kootenay, he commented that it was not often the leaders of these two churches, would be seen at a service together. Good point by Archbishop John. Sort of like having the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Pope meet.

My thanks to Joel Vinge for taking me to the service.

While attending the service I immediately thought of one of the hymns 'My Love Colours Outside the Lines' written by George Light in 1995. In fact I am listening to it now on Youtube being sung by the Northwest Barrie United church choir. Here is the chorus: “My love colours outside the lines, Exploring paths that few could ever find; And takes me into places where I've never been before And opens doors to worlds outside the lines."

On May 31, St. John's in Chapleau was deconsecrated and closed as a church. As one whose family has a had a connection with St.

Rev John Sanders John's almost since it was established in 1885, of course I am very saddened by this turn of events.

However, I have been gone from Chapleau for 32 years, so I really must be careful in my comments.

But maybe "My Love Colours Outside the Lines" may have helped.

In fact, in 1885, St. John's may never have become a reality if the committee of adults meeting to discuss plans for the church had their way.

Let me share a bit of what happened from my 1984 book, "Sons of Thunder...Apostles of Love". The first motion put before the meeting proposed that the matter be dropped as the amount of $500 was too great for the people to raise.

The motion was defeated but a stalemate arose over who would be on the finance committee.

Mrs. R.V. Nicholson preserved an account of the meeting which relates the next development: "At this point Miss Annie Nicholson, although only seventeen years old got up and said that if the meeting would allow her, she would volunteer to collect the amount with the assistance of her friend Miss Minnie Richardson."

Several "prominent" members ridiculed this idea, but a motion passed appointing the two

girls to the finance committee, and at the next meeting Miss Nicholson commented that a "a really strong box" would be required to hold the money subscribed.Slightly more than one thousand dollars had been collected and paid.

The first St. John's located on the old tennis court was opened and dedicated on July 1, 1886 -- colouring outside the lines by the adults led to the church being established.

On April 23, 1906 at an Easter Congregational meeting a motion was passed to build a new church but at the outset of discussions a majority favoured enlarging the existing building but Rev, W,L. James, the Rector, who Archbishop R.J. Renison referred to as a 'flame of fire' held out and the meeting agreed unanimously.

The first service in the new St. John's was held on March 29 1908, when it was dedicated by Bishop George Holmes.

By this time in St. John's history, G. B. Nicholson, had become the first reeve of Chapleau in 1901 and was greatly involved in the life of St. John's. At Easter 1918, St. John's paid tribute to Mr. Nicholson in a letter that was framed and can still be seen on a wall in the church.

It reads in part: "As a member of the congregation from the day the first service was held in the town, as a member of the committees which have planned and directed the building of both church and rectory, as a member of the choir, and as a warden for twenty-two years, you have had much to do with every stage of the work.

Your business ability, supported as it is by your great generosity, has helped more than anyone can say in establishing the parish on a sound financial basis with a splendid rectory, and a beautiful church, both free of debt."

Chapleau, not only St. John's owes so much to Mr. Nicholson, who coloured outside the lines in so many ways for the betterment of the community by obviously colouring outside the lines. Cont’d on P.5

The discovery of 215 children buried on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School has affected Canadians who spent an emotional week struggling with the sad truth about our past. While this was not the first that we heard of children buried in unmarked graves at these schools, the discovery provided a concrete reminder of the need to repeat this work at the locations of other former residential schools across the country.

Although it is tempting to think this story represents the sensibilities of other times, Canada continues to frustrate and treat Indigenous children poorly. Even as we respond to this discovery, the government continues to fight Indigenous children in court to avoid the settlement awarded by the Human Rights Tribunal over the sub-standard quality of child welfare services offered to First Nation kids. At the same time, government lawyers are fighting the survivors of Ste. Anne’s Residential School, where students were tortured with horrific punishments including the use of an electric chair.

In both cases the government is spending millions in legal costs to avoid restitution payments showing the limits of official compassion may not extend beyond thoughts and prayers.

There can be no healing without justice Unfortunately, this is not the first time we Death Register; for churches, Indigenous have discovered the remains of children near residential schools. According to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), 40% to 60% of children who attended these schools died. This includes incidents in which children were purposely exposed to infections such as Tuberculosis, and then allowed to spread the disease through the school.

Testimony like that led TRC commissioner, Justice Murray Sinclair, to state that he believes the death count could be much higher due to these schools’ poor burial records. One thing is certain, many families are still searching and deserve answers.

Now, we have arrived at a critical point in the reconciliation process. First Nations, survivors, elders, leaders, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and others are calling for action to confront this history and help bring about closure.

Families and communities are discussing this important issue, and the House of Commons has as well. In addition to a special debate on June 1st, New Democrats used our final opposition day in parliament to expand on the subject further.

It is imperative that the Calls to Action from the TRC report be implemented. So far only 10 of 94 were completed since it was tabled in 2015. If it chose to, the government could immediately respond to six important Calls that relate to this issue.

Those are Calls 71 - 76 which relate to: The collection of records on the deaths of Aboriginal children in the care of residential schools and would provide funding to develop and maintain the National Residential School Student

communities and former students to develop and maintain an online registry of residential school cemeteries; work with churches and families of children who died at residential schools to inform of the child’s death and respond to wishes for appropriate commemoration ceremonies/markers or reburial in home communities as requested; work with all parties to implement strategies for identifying, documenting, maintaining, commemorating, and protecting cemeteries and other sites where children were buried; ensure the work being carried out is led by the Aboriginal community most affected, that Survivors and Knowledge Keepers shall be sought for information in developing strategies, and Aboriginal protocols shall be respected before any potentially invasive technical inspection of a site.

In the meantime, Canadians struggle to understand more purposefully the history of residential schools as survivor’s and families relive the horrors of those times.

We are forced to consider that these were not really schools, they were institutions designed to eradicate and eliminate indigenous people both culturally and physically. By that very nature it makes them instruments of genocide.

Additionally, we are at a point where it is not good enough to say that we are sharing condolences. We must demand action to put right injustices and to fight for a future that is based on human rights, respect for treaty rights, respect for justice and respect for the inherent dignity of Indigenous people.

Chose certaine, les membres de plusieurs familles sont toujours à leur recherche et ils méritent qu’on leur donne des réponses.

Nous en sommes rendus à un point critique du processus de réconciliation. Les membres des Premières Nations, les survivants, les Aînés, les chefs, les responsables du Centre national pour la vérité et la réconciliation et d’autres intervenants demandent que des mesures soient prises pour permettre d’affronter l’histoire et de tourner la page. Les familles et les communautés discutent de cette question importante, et la Chambre des communes en fait autant. En plus de la tenue d’un débat spécial, le 1er juin, les néo démocrates ont profité de leur dernier jour désigné au Parlement pour approfondir le sujet.

Chapleau Moments Cont’d from P.3 Although, he did not serve as Rector of St. John's, Rev. John Sanders, also spelled Saunders, born to Ojibwe parents at Flying Post in 1845, was one of the first indigenous priests of the Anglican church in Canada, then the Church of England. He was ordained priest in 1979. John Horden, the first bishop of Moosonee, recruited him for the ministry -- certainly colouring outside the lines in 1872 when he took the young man to St. John's College in Winnipeg.

As a missionary he travelled from his base at Mattagami to Flying Post to Missanabie and Michipicoten. He also travelled by way of Loon (Borden) Lake, the Loon Lake portage and the Chapleau river to the present site of Chapleau.

He conducted a service on the banks of the river.

After Chapleau was established oldtimers recalled open air services he held at the Indian Reserve and at St. John's church.

Descendants of Rev. Sanders (Saunders) still live in Chapleau and area.

On May 21st, 2021 conservation officers responded to reports of abandoned walleye

dumped in the south branch of the Muskoka River near the Ontario Power Generation station.

Officers found 64 rotting walleye carcases, some of which were left to waste whole. There was also litter – including 13 AAA batteries- discarded along the shore.

CHADWIC HOME, FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE. Offers shelter, emotional support, and information for women and their children who are in crisis situations. We have a Toll Free Crisis Line which is staffed 24 hours a day. We can arrange for free transportation to the Centre for women who live in the Algoma/Chapleau area. We also offer support to women who live in the communities of Chapleau, White River, Dubreuilville, and Hornepayne through our Outreach Program. Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services. If you need someone to talk to or if you just need someone to listen, call our Toll Free Crisis line at 1800-461-2242 or you can drop in at the Centre. We are here for you.
