Chapleau History Inspires Story in New Canadian Anthology Beaver, Moose, Canoe
A
piece of Chapleau history has inspired one of the stories featured in the new anthology Beaver Moose Canoe: New Canadian Tall Tales, which will be released on June 30, 2026. Haliburton author Jennifer Korpela, whose husband's family has long-standing roots in Chapleau, is one of eighteen Canadian writers whose work appears in the collection celebrating Canadian folklore, humour, and storytelling traditions. Korpela's story, "We Got the Road. The Road Got Tom.", is inspired by the opening of the highway connecting Chapleau and Thessalon. Told in the tradition of the classic tall tale, the story imagines the larger-than-life adventures, mishaps, and characters that might have accompanied the construction of a road through the rugged Northern Ontario wilderness. "Like many Northern Ontario communities, Chapleau has a rich history of resilience, resourcefulness, and storytelling," says Korpela. "I wanted to capture some of that spirit in a tale that is both humorous and affectionate." Beaver Moose Canoe is a collection of New Canadian Tall Tales featuring dancing moose, haunted islands, giant mosquitoes, lake monsters, ferry crossings, and other Long Term uniquely Canadian Forecast adventures.
