Student Mental Health Supports Remain Priority for Algoma District School Board Throughout the Pandemic Mental health and well-being are priorities of the Algoma District School Board (ADSB), especially as the Board navigates through the Covid-19 pandemic. Superintendent Brent Vallee provided an update on ADSB Mental Health Initiatives at the ADSB Regular Board Meeting on January 19, 2021.

Vallee prefaced his presentation with a reminder of the significant impact COVID-19 has had on students and their families throughout the province and the Algoma District. The pandemic has left many feeling emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected and isolated, while closures have created financial hardship for many. "We have moved to a completely different place than we've ever been before," said Vallee.

"The impact of the pandemic has been huge for all our students, families and our communities in general."

To p r o v i d e a l o c a l p e r s p e c t i v e , Superintendent Vallee shared examples of trends that ADSB counselors are hearing from students. Some are experiencing a lack of motivation. Other students may find it difficult to engage with teachers and classmates online.

For many, there is a sense of uncertainty about what the future holds as Covid-19 cases continue to fluctuate. Students miss their friends and their "normal" routines.

As a school board, ADSB recognizes that students and their families face these challenges and that students are apt to bring challenges with their mental health and wellbeing into the school community. The board's school-based mental-health team is dedicated to helping students and their caregivers. "We want to do whatever we can to make sure that our students are ready to learn and their well-being is certainly part of that," said Vallee.

The ADSB Well-Being Leadership Committee provides a voice for different stakeholder groups to offer input and feedback on supports and resources available across the Board. The group meets virtually each month to discuss issues impacting well-being within ADSB schools. This team includes members of Senior Administration, Student Trustees, parent representatives and ADSB Board Leads for Mental Health (Darryl Fillmore), Indigenous Education (Carol Trudeau-McKewan), Safe Schools (Will Nelles) and Well-Being (Mendy Snider).

Production delays are directly affecting Canada’s anticipated delivery of vaccines, calling into question the government’s timeline for distribution, and confirming the belief that we should have negotiated the ability to produce doses domestically. The problems emerged in early January when the federal government claimed that Canada’s vaccine shipment would be reduced by 50 percent over a four-week period. What made that difficult to accept was the news that the European Union will have a much shorter interruption in deliveries than Canada.

Despite assurances from the government that countries will be impacted equally by supply reductions, Canadians are learning that isn’t really the case.

Less than a week later, we learned that shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to Canada have been suspended entirely for a full week. With the second wave of the pandemic fully upon us and cases surging in most

Adding to the challenge is a secretiveness surrounding vaccine procurement on the part of the government. For months they have been tight-lipped about the terms of the deals they've signed with big drug manufacturers. They are also displaying a pattern of contradictions that are becoming unacceptably common and could even be accused of over-confidence when it comes to the arrangements they have made. That was the message from critics when the government passed on the opportunity to purchase up to 16 million additional doses of the Moderna vaccine without disclosing the full terms of this foregone option.

Transparency is essential for maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in Canada’s vaccination strategy. That’s the reason New Democrats are calling on the federal government to reveal how many vaccine doses have been secured for each month until September 2021.

Canadians deserve clarity since, as we’ve now seen, these orders aren’t firm. We also asked the government to confirm if Canada is guaranteed delivery of 4 million doses of the PfizerBioNTech vaccine by the end of March 2021, or

to protect Canadians from COVID-19. People are making tremendous sacrifices to keep their communities safe because they understand that every day matters during this pandemic. They need and deserve the full details of Canada’s vaccine delivery timeline.

As it stands, Canada has only received about 380,000 doses of vaccine and another 400,000 were supposed to be delivered this month. However, relying on other nations to produce the vaccine could derail that timeline.

While countries like Brazil, Australia, Japan, India and China successfully negotiated the right to domestically produce the AstraZeneca vaccine, the Canadian government failed to make that agreement in its negotiations with the company.

There is no reason Canada should be relying on other countries to produce vaccines for us. The government simply failed to negotiate that right and now production delays in Europe mean that Canadians will be the ones waiting extra weeks or months for a vaccine. The government needs to come clean and make pertinent contract details public.

Drug warning: Increase in suspected overdoses The Community Drug Strategy has received reports of a higher number of suspected opioid overdoses in Greater Sudbury, some of these resulting in deaths.

While we cannot confirm the substance that has caused the overdoses, this situation serves as an important reminder to the community that street drugs may be cut or mixed with substances such as fentanyl or carfentanil, and that even a very small amount of these substances can cause an overdose.

An overdose occurs when a person uses more of a substance, or combination of substances, than their body can handle. As a consequence, the brain is unable to control basic life functions. The person might pass out, stop breathing or experience a seizure.

Overdoses can be fatal.

Prevent opioid overdoses/save lives: !

Avoid using drugs when you are alone. If this is not possible, ask a friend to check in on you. !

Reduce your risk of COVID-19 infection by staying at least six feet away from other people or wearing a non-medical mask when physical distancing is not possible. !

If possible, call someone before using drugs. They can call 911 if you become unresponsive. !

When using drugs with a friend, do not use at the same time. !

When switching substances or if you have not used in a while, start with a lower dose. !

Carry a naloxone kit. Get your free kit at your local pharmacy today. !

Call 911 if you suspect an overdose. !

Avoid mixing drugs, including prescribed, over-thecounter, and illegal drugs. !

Avoid drinking alcohol while using other drugs.

To protect others from the risk of COVID-19 infection, the Government of Canada suggests that you wear a non-medical or cloth mask when physical distancing can’t be maintained.

Chapleau Resident Charged For Breaching Conditions On January 22, 2021, at approximately 7:30 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic dispute on Grey Street in Chapleau.

As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old person, from Chapleau, was arrested and charged with the following: • Failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) (Two Counts).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in April 2021, in Chapleau.

Chapleau Moments my father's best man at the wedding of my parents in 1940 also claimed that he "looked after" my father after I was born in Hamilton.

Our grandmothers were the best of friends and enjoyed playing golf on "Ladies' Day" at the golf course in Chapleau. Bob and I also got a chuckle over the time that his grandmother went to visit mine on Elgin Street when the snow banks were really high. Bob's father dropped his mother off and she assured him she could get to my grandmother's house.

Somehow Mrs. Fife got stuck in the snowbank.

My grandmother, Lil Morris, was watching and immediately called Clyde to come and rescue his mother. All went well and they had their visit.

After graduating from CHS Bob attended the University of Toronto where he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree.

In 1978, Bob started his journalism career in the parliamentary bureau of NewsRadio and then he worked for United CHS reunion Tom Corston, MJM, Olive McAdam, Bob, His mother Press International. In the acknowledgments Bob mentions Derik Hodgson who was an incredibly good reporter of my generation with whom I had worked at the Kingston Whig-Standard and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. It so happened that by 1991 Derik had become communications director of the Canadian Labour Congress and had organized a conference for editors of labour union publications. I was the editor of Insider, the faculty magazine at College of the Rockies and attended the conference in Vancouver, Small world that it is, there I was with my old friend Derik drinking coffee in the Hotel Vancouver, discussing a book by a Chapleau boy, who we both knew, albeit coming to know Bob in different ways. We were agreed on the message of the book.

In 1993, Bob's second book, 'Kim Campbell: The Making of a Politician' was published. She became the first female prime minister of Canada. Again, it remains a must read for a better understanding of politics in Canada.

Bob has won other awards.

After Bob became Ottawa Bureau Chief of CTV News and host of Question Period that he has become a household name in Canada.

Especially since I have been on Facebook, many of his old friends have messaged me, "Did you see Bob on the news last night?", "Bob is interviewing the prime minister", "Did you teach him?" and so on, but I am guilty too.

While I was scanning photos of Bob for this piece at Walmart, I was getting help from a lady there, and pointed to photo of Bob with Tom Corston, and asked her, "Do you ever watch CTV News?" to which she replied she did.

"Do you know Bob Fife?" and again the answer was yes. Pointing to Bob holding an umbrella over Tom, who became Anglican bishop of Moosonee, I said, "That's him when he was in Grade 9", adding, "Bob is from Chapleau."

Small Businesses Apply for Ontario's Small Business Support Grant in Growing Numbers

All eligible businesses encouraged to apply for relief during the provincial shutdown `The Ontario government has received more than 42,000 applications for the Ontario Small Business Support Grant. Businesses that have been approved can expect to receive payment within about 10 business days. During the Provincewide Shutdown all eligible small businesses facing challenges are being encouraged to apply for this financial support and receive at least $10,000 and up to $20,000.

An update on the new grant was provided today by Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance and President of the Treasury Board, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, Prabmeet Sarkaria, Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, and Lisa Thompson, Minister of Government and Consumer Services.

“There's no question that eligible small businesses need urgent relief to help them navigate this challenging period," said Minister Bethlenfalvy. "If you own an eligible small business in Ontario, I urge you to visit Ontario.ca/COVIDsupport to join tens of thousands of others to access the support that is available to help navigate COVID-19."

Small businesses required to close or significantly restrict services under the Provincewide Shutdown are able to apply for the Ontario Small Business Support Grant and use this funding in whatever way makes the most sense for their individual business needs. For example, some businesses could need support paying employee wages, while others could need support with their rent.

The program will financially support a variety of businesses, including restaurants, retail and personal care services. It will help them pay their bills and meet their financial obligations so they can continue to employ people and support their local communities once it is safe to do so.

I'm not one to watch a lot of television and I really don't have many celebrities that I follow or admire. But there is one popular fellow, and a Canadian at that, who I do like. And it is specifically because of what he says and does.

He's not an actor or sports hero but rather just a common guy who has worked his way up in life just by “doing things right.” With that small clue you may have figured out I'm talking about Mike Holmes, the central figure of several television spin offs produced by Make it Right Productions.

For the life of me, I find it almost impossible to argue with Holmes philosophy on doing things right. If you do things right the first time, there is no need to do it all over or fix it later.

In truth, it is actually more cost efficient and effective to do things right the first time.

This week our NDP caucus had a virtual meeting to get updates on the current pandemic situation and discuss various proposals on how we can help Ontarians get through this ordeal healthy and unscathed. It was after this meeting that it occurred to me that Doug Ford and his government would do well to heed Mike Holmes' advice. “Do it right – the first time.” I say this because after looking at the current trends and direction things are going, it seems clear that all along and even now, Doug Ford chooses half measures. He has a record of listening to lobbyists, insiders and friends and ignoring the solid advice of health experts which is based on scientifically supported data.

Every Ontarian must do their part to stop the spread of COVID, but our efforts are for naught if the Ford government continues to withhold meaningful supports, and instead only o ff e r s a s t a y - a t - h o m e o r d e r r i f e w i t h contradictory loopholes and exemptions.

In order to slow the spread of COVID-19, Doug Ford must make this lockdown count. By now, all Ontarians know well what the government is doing – or not doing – to try to stave off this growing pandemic. There's no evidence that the latest lockdown order released is any different from weeks previous — it's a halfmeasure, under which people decide for themselves what's essential, and thousands more people get sick every day.

The truth is, however, we are not totally at the mercy of this virus. There are definite steps that

- Page 8 can be taken, provided that the government has the will to step up and do the job — right.

For one thing, we need to provide sick pay for working Ontarians. For countless essential workers, calling in sick means their family will go to bed hungry. They just can't afford to miss shifts. Doug Ford cut Ontario's two measly paid sick days and now refuses to give Ontarians any paid sick days during COVID-19, because he doesn't want to spend more on us, the everyday working people who make this province run.

In a recent COVID-19 modelling update, Dr. Barbara Yaffe and Dr. Adalsteinn Brown could not have been clearer. These health specialists told Ontarians that without paid sick days and supports for workers, it would not be possible to control the virus. How much clearer can a message be?

The NDP has laid out many proposals for the government to follow that would be highly effective in getting us all through this situation.

The N D P has proposed plans such as implementing paid sick leave, paying small business owners when they pause operations, opening more self-isolation centres, banning all evictions, restricting non-essential travel between regions, and send more testing and tracing capacity right into workplaces and hotspot neighbourhoods. We also firmly believe that we can and must recruit thousands of longterm care workers with higher wages and on-thejob training, like British Columbia and Quebec did.

And what is the government doing to protect those who are there day after day to protect us? The Ford government must provide paid sick days and presumptive WSIB coverage for frontline workers during the pandemic, after the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) revealed that paramedics in some regions are being denied WSIB claims despite being exposed to COVID-19 while on the job.

Some are getting sick because of their job. They are working on the front line to protect us. The least we can do is to guarantee they'll have paid sick days and be covered by WSIB if they are exposed to the virus. Our paramedics, and every health care worker in this province, should have presumptive coverage and should never be forced to prove they contracted COVID-19 on the job.

This is no time for the government to just sit on their hands as the date for in class education looms. We should have better, more effective plans in place already. It's not enough to just reopen schools. We can't repeat the mistakes of the last few months. Don't just reopen schools; make them safe to open. The NDP has proposed having a robust in-school COVID-19 testing

program in place before students and staff return.

We need to cap class sizes at 15 and work right now to improve ventilation – not years from now.

And we say give parents paid family-care days to stay home with kids that are sick, so they don't unintentionally send a child with the virus to school because they can't afford to stay home with them.

We need to improve vaccine distribution and get it to the most vulnerable Ontarians in long-term care and congregate settings across the province much faster. Doug Ford can't just sit back and wait for the vaccine to save us to avoid spending on the help we need now. That just is not going to work.

Doug Ford is sitting on a nest of money provided by the federal government months ago that should be used now – to “Do it right – the first time.” It is not only inefficient and costly to save money to spend later knowing that it will cost money down the road to fix things up because the pandemic was prolonged by Ford's inaction and penny pinching.

Author and philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote, "They who have been bred in the school of politics fail now and always to face the facts. Their measures are half measures and makeshifts merely.”

Public Health Sudbury & Districts declares COVID-19 outbreak in Marymount Academy in Greater Sudbury Public Health Sudbury & Districts has declared a COVID-19 outbreak in Marymount Academy (Sudbury Catholic District School Board) in Greater Sudbury after one more individual tested positive for the virus, bringing the total to two cases associated with Marymount Academy.

In accordance with provincial guidance, an outbreak in a school setting is declared when two or more laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 are linked and occur within 14 days of each other.

Parents and caregivers are being provided notice of the outbreak and will receive public health guidance. Public Health is working closely with M arymount A cademy and s chool board administrators at Sudbury Catholic District School Board to monitor the outbreak, further limit the spread of infection, and ensure ongoing measures

are maintained to protect students and employees.

Individuals who are identified as close contacts of a case in a school setting will be directly contacted by Public Health Sudbury & Districts.

Public Health will call these parents or guardians, as well as employees, to provide direction.

To date, affected class and buses include: Grade 7B, bus routes, N 461 (secondary) morning bus, N 460 (secondary) morning bus, N 460 (secondary) afternoon bus, and N W 464 (secondary) afternoon bus. Public Health’s investigation is ongoing.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board shared in a letter Monday evening that they have chosen to suspend all classes at Marymount Academy and Pius XII on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 to review all health and safety protocols to ensure they continue to provide a safe environment

for both students and staff. Further communication from the school to families will be forthcoming.

Ontario Investing $200 Million in Local Infrastructure Funding helps communities build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater systems Today, the Honourable Laurie Scott, Minister of Infrastructure, announced a $200million investment in municipalities through the 2021 Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) to help 424 small, rural and northern communities build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure.

"COVID-19 has created challenges for everyone, including our municipal partners," said Laurie Scott, Minister of Infrastructure. "By making this stable, predictable investment, our government is not only improving critical infrastructure, we are strengthening local

economies, creating jobs and laying the foundation for our long-term recovery."

OCIF helps eligible communities invest in local infrastructure and asset management planning to address their priority needs. The province uses a formula to distribute funding, recognizing that municipalities have different infrastructure needs. These investments will help eligible communities attract jobs and investment, as well as build local capacity to grow and thrive.

This annual municipal investment provided through OCIF for local infrastructure in communities across Ontario will contribute to the

province's economic recovery and growth in the coming year.

The Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund provides funding for communities with populations under 100,000, along with all rural and northern communities for local infrastructure projects.

In 2020, approximately $200 million in funding was allocated to small, rural and northern communities. Municipalities may accumulate their funding for up to five years to address larger infrastructure projects.

Horwath calls on Ford to listen to public health science, stop undermining public health experts NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is calling on Doug Ford to stop undermining public health experts who question the Ford government’s pandemic response. She released the following statement: “There is a pattern of public health experts, doctors and scientists who are critical of the Ford government being undermined, targeted or harassed for expressing their professional opinion. It’s well documented that Ford has been ignoring public health experts — including all those who recommend paid sick days, more staff and infection prevention and control experts in long-term care, and smaller class sizes in schools.

Dr. David Fisman is one of many unpaid government consultants who also has paid work.

Yet Doug Ford singled Fisman out with a stinging

statement on Tuesday in an effort to undermine him. Meanwhile, Ford’s got highly-paid owners of for-profit long-term care homes sitting at his advisory tables, and hasn’t put out statements attacking their conflicts of interest.

Dr. Michael Warner has been critical of Ontario’s pandemic response. He had to close his social media accounts as a result of harassment.

Ford was silent.

Dr. Nathan Stall, a geriatrician who works with vulnerable seniors, was attacked on social media for getting his vaccine when he was supposed to. Ford was silent.

Ford was cutting public health before the pandemic, and he isn’t showing respect for public health now.”

The first break-in is believed to have taken place sometime between December 26, 2020 and January 1, 2021. A number of tools including drill bits and socket sets were taken as well as a green coloured 8″ Woods power ice auger. The total value of the stolen items was approximately $2000. It is unknown if anything was stolen during the second incident.
