School buses cancelled across Northern Ontario communities due to extreme cold

M

other Nature was a little brutal this week as Northern Communities were recipients of some of the coldest temperatures of the year.

As extreme cold warnings were issued for the north, in Chapleau, the mercury dipped to -38

C with a wind chill factor ranging from -40 to -50 C. School bus transportation was cancelled yesterday, Wednesday January 26th.

As frostbite can develop within minutes people were advised to stay indoors if at all

possible.

It’s a good time to sit at the kitchen table with a hot coffee and plan your garden, order your seeds and daydream about black flies.

Spring is just around the bend, apparently!

h e p r o v i n c e ’s S p e c i a l Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a person early this morning in the Township of Chapleau, in northeastern Ontario.

Preliminary information suggests the following: In the evening of January 20, 2022, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a residence in Chapleau for a call about a person in distress.

An officer attempted to make contact with the person and received no response.

In the early hours of January 21, 2022,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Tactical Response Unit officers entered the residence and located the person deceased.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Michael J. Morris While looking for a report on a bed push from London to Waterloo, Ontario in which I participated in 1961 while attending Waterloo Lutheran University, now Wilfrid Laurier University, I came across stories about Chapleau Winter Carnival during the 1930s.

The Queen of the Chapleau Winter Carnival in 1938, held during the Great Depression arrived for her coronation in true northern style on a sled pulled by husky dogs to the location in downtown Chapleau where Carnival King Charles McGregor was waiting.

Ross Kemp was the driver of the sled carrying the Queen while Chief Parade Marshal Jimmy Purich, resplendent in his uniform, headed the Queen`s procession from the CPR station over the old horseshoe bridge to Main Street, riding a pure white horse pulling another sled.

It was Chapleau's second winter carnival, and despite the effects of the Great Depression on the community, people were out for a good time.

Marie Perpete was crowned the Queen of the Carnival. The Chapleau Post reported that she was dressed in a pure white ski costume with white ski boots, white slacks, and a parka trimmed with white fur.

Ever the Chapleau booster, A.J. "Art" Grout, who had the title, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had written a letter to H.K. Kennedy, the editor of a magazine called 'The Vacationer'

Tremendous community spirit at Chapleau Winter Carnival in 1938 during Great Depression extending an invitation to him to come from Toronto for the carnival. I have no idea if Mr. Kennedy made the trip but Mr. Grout, super salesman that he was, extolled the wonders of Chapleau in his letter.

Mr. Grout was to become president of Smith and Chapple Ltd --- at this time D.O, Payette was president of the company.

Mr. Grout wrote in part that Chapleau was a very modern town with a population of about 2,800 people well equipped with schools, hotels, and business places and "is far more modern than one would expect in a place so far in the Northern wilds."

Remember that at this time in its history, Chapleau was very isolated with the CPR being primary way to get to and from town.

Talk about turning potential negatives into positives when talking about Chapleau, Mr. Grout was a real professional. Writing about Mr. Grout in Chapleau Trails, the late Dr. Bill Pellow, the editor and publisher, refers to him as "a staunch promoter" of the early winter carnivals. He sure was.

Mr. Grout's letter continued that "timbered forests came down to within a few hundred yards of the outskirts of the town" but the citizens were enthusiastic about winter sports and got into winter costumes to enjoy the carnival to the fullest.

He also mentioned that it was common to have five feet of snow and 40 below zero temperatures at carnival time.

At the 1938 winter carnival there were 122 winter sports events spread over three days, Mr. Grout wrote. One of the major events was the sled dog races with over 20 high class teams entered.

There were skiing events taking place on a new 45 foot tower for jumping as well as log chopping and a curling bonspiel.

Five hockey teams made up of teams from Chapleau and surrounding camps would be playing in a tournament and there was also a turkey shoot and of course the grand dances.

A highlight of the carnival was the midnight torch light parade and snake dance down the main street.

It fascinates me to see the tremendous community spirit that was so alive in Chapleau during the Great Depression as the citizens launched an annual winter carnival. I looked in 'Break at Nine', George Tremblay's excellent book on the movies and life in Chapleau to see what he might have said about those times.

Mr. Tremblay wrote in part: "... Chapleau saw its share of hardship during the depression.

There was no such thing as a food bank to help the hungry and unemployment insurance was unheard of in the 30s. However, people helped each other and when a family slipped into a desperate situation, their neighbours would organize events to help them out..." Yet they put together a carnival. Mr. Tremblay was born and raised in Chapleau.

Through the years, the Chapleau Winter Carnival brought everyone together. We pushed the bed from London to Waterloo in just over eight hours as part of the university's first Winter Carnival. Them were the days folks.

Ontario Businesses To See Full Impact of 2021 Electricity Rate Reductions After a year of deferred Global Adjustment payments, full savings of Comprehensive Electricity Plan will be realized in 2022 As of January 1, 2022, industrial and commercial electricity customers will benefit from the full savings introduced through the Ontario government's Comprehensive Electricity Plan, announced in Budget 2020, and first implemented in January 2021. This year customers could see an additional four percent savings compared to their bills last year, bringing the full savings from the Comprehensive Electricity Plan to between 15 and 17 per cent, making Ontario a more competitive place to do business.

“Our Comprehensive Electricity Plan has helped reverse the trend of skyrocketing electricity prices that drove jobs out of Ontario,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. “Over 50,000 customers are benefiting from our government's plan which has reduced electricity rates on clean and reliable power, allowing them to focus on reinvesting in their operations and creating jobs here at home.”

Starting on January 1, 2021, the Comprehensive Electricity Plan reduced overall Global Adjustment (GA) costs for industrial and commercial customers who do not participate in the Regulated Price Plan (RPP) by shifting the forecast above-market costs of non-hydro renewable energy, such as wind, solar and

How to sleep through the night

(NC) Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep to be their best. But many of us don’t get enough. That can cause irritability, depression, high blood pressure and slow reaction time. Here are a few things you can do at any age for a restorative night’s rest.

1. Set a routine.

Try going to bed and waking up at about the same time every single day. You’ll get into a rhythm so waking and sleeping feel natural. If you like a lazy weekend morning, try slow-start activities like reading or listening to music with a cozy cup of tea or coffee.

2. No napping.

As tempting as it might be, taking a nap in the afternoon means you might not be as tired when your bedtime comes around, which will make it harder to fall asleep.

3. Stop with the screens.

It can be as simple as writing down your tasks for tomorrow or doing a short meditation before going to sleep. Whatever you do, try to keep your worries out of the bedroom so you can drift off peacefully.

Ontarians are sick of living under a reactive government that flies by the seat of its pants. Ontario deserves to thrive under leadership that cares about people rather than political patronage and profits. We need a government with a steady hand on the wheel that lays out and implements proactively engineered plans to achieve necessary goals.

Many people in Ontario are unhappy with the current cabin crew piloting our plane. June 2, 2022, provides us with an opportunity to replace the current seat of the pants government that has struggled to find its way for the last four years.
