CHAPLEAU EXPRESS, January 15, 2026 - Page 2 OBITUARY Gerard Majellan Law June 2, 1965 – January 6, 2026 It is with great sadness that the family of Gerard Law announce his passing on January 6, 2026. Gerry passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Hospice Huronia-Tomkins House at the age of 60 years. Following a shattering diagnosis of ALS five years ago, Gerry continued to live and work with remarkable courage and dignity. He adapted to every new challenge with optimism and maintained an unwavering gratitude for life. Gerard is the loving husband of Myrna Fortin Law, beloved father to Nathan and Larque Law. Cherished brother of Gisele (Darren Barlow), Jason (Dawn) Law. Predeceased by his parents William & Rachel Law, and his brother Danny Law. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Gerry will also be forever missed by his many friends in the Midland/Penetanguishene music community, his PNR and CP Railroad communities, and his Chapleau community. Those who knew Gerry saw a pillar of grace. He was quiet, strong, peaceful and safe, peppered with an amazing sense of humour. With a passion for music throughout his life, Gerry excelled in this realm. He is well known as a bass proficient, playing with several bands, notably the rock band Souled Out in his more recent performance era. Gerry also loved and excelled in sound design for many years, providing the foundation for many live events and recording projects. At the age of 50, Gerry embraced a new challenge in learning to play the cello, an instrument whose sound had always beckoned him. Within five years, he had reached Grade 6 with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Gerry's endeavours in music were a testament to who he was, a steady foundation from whom others could shine. Gerry's generosity and reputation as an impressive technical mind carried to his work in Railroad Signals and Communications. Conscientious and always happy to help, Gerry was routinely the 'go to guy' for resolving complex situations, even when off call in the middle of the night. His years as a Signals Maintainer and Technical Instructor earned him much respect. Above all, Gerry will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature, as a loving family man, and for his compassionate love and hopes for the world. Caring deeply about social issues and the environment, Gerry expressed many times his wishes for the world to become a better place. These wishes were made clear in the way he carried himself, treating everyone he met with compassion and respect. Everyone who met Gerry was touched by his exceptional nature. Gerry was so proud of his children. His family could not have asked for a kinder or more supportive husband and father. Gerry will remain a guiding compass through his legacy of kindness. The family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful team of professionals who worked with Gerry so closely during his battle with ALS. Special thanks to Dr. Julie Caron and Gerry's 'Angels' at Tomkins House, Dr. Golisky, to Dr. Abrahao and the ALS Clinic Team at Sunnybrook, Royal Victoria Hospital, Nurse Natacha, Nurse Angela and their colleagues at Bayshore, the PSWs and OTs from Paramed, Connor from ProResp, Community Reach, Wheels 4 Wheels, Ontario Health at Home, the ALS Society of Canada, and the mobility team at Motion. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to Hospice Huronia Tomkins House, or the ALS Society of Canada.
OBITUARY Helen Katsenos Ο Θεός να Ανάπαυση την Ψυχή της...Αιώνια η μνήμη της God rest her soul...May her memory be eternal Surrounded by boxes of her personal effects, countless photos I fidget with her wedding band that has been on my finger since December 5, 2025. It is with the heaviest of hearts I share with you the passing of Helen (Harbilas) Katsenos. She went by many names: Eleni, Mama, Mama Gus and even Mrs. Gus but for me it was simple Ma. The proper Greek term for mother is metera but she insisted I use this term for my motherin law as it showed my respect...lesson taught lesson learned. She died peacefully at the age of 79 at SSCHS on November 30, 2025. She was surrounded by her daughter, Nicki and son in law, Neil-her family. For those who knew her you understood that her key word in life was family. She showed her affection to all that crossed her path but the love for her family was deep and profound. She was born in Aghios Ilias, Greece on March 6, 1946 to Dimitri and Feroniki (predeceased). It is there she grew up in a meager but humble home toiling in the fields until 1962 when her much loved father died suddenly leaving her mother a widow with five young kids. Her mother chose to embark on a new life in Canada in 1965 but Helen and her older sister were left behind with family. In 1967, Helen was able to reunite with them but was not enthusiastic about Canada but was happy to be back in the circle of her family. In 1970 she met the love of her life and together they made a life together. In 1975 they came to Chapleau and for the next almost forty years worked side by side providing food and friendship to all who had the pleasure of dining in their restaurants. Sadly in 2013 they were 'forced'into retirement due to health reasons but they chose to stay here amongst their Chapleau family. In 2016, Gus passed and Helen never fully recovered from this loss but she tried to smile and offer daily hugs to all especially at the Bignucolo Residence. Throughout her life, she demonstrated her pure and unconditional love for all. Her dedication and care shaped her work, her friendships and above all else her family. She leaves behind to mourn her loss, the light of her life, her daughter, Nicki but also her siblings: Angeliki, Giorgos (Eleni), Despina (Constantinos), and Antigoni (Athanasios). Also many nieces and nephews and their families. She will also be remembered by her sister in law, Zoi (Micheal) Barbagiannis and brother in law, Spiro (Ernestine). Her legacy will be the goodness and selfless heart she possessed and though our hearts ache with sadness of her absence, her memory and example will continue. At this time gratitude is expressed to all who called, texted, sent cards or simply provided a look or hug. The biggest THANK YOU goes to the SSCHS community. I dare not mention a name because someone will be forgotten and you all have to know each and everyone of you made her last three years the best. She is with her beloved husband and at peace. A Chapleau contingent took the overnight Canadian Pacific Railway passenger train to "do their bit" at a celebration for Floyd 'Busher' Curry of the Montreal Canadiens, according to a story in the Sudbury Star. It was Floyd Curry Night at The Forum in Montreal, honouring the Chapleau born player who the article noted was "a staunch supporter of Chapleau and environs." He played in the National Hockey League all with the Canadiens from 1947 to 1958. Curry was born in Chapleau on August 11, 1925, but lived in Nicholson during his early years. He did have relatives in Chapleau. The Sudbury Star noted that Curry was "well deserving of the support and acclaim of those who knew him personally and of Chapleau hockey fans who knew him as an outstanding player." The newspaper added that "clean sport" had always been his standard "and had won him the support of his team-mates and opponents."
Contingent travels to Montreal to celebrate Floyd Curry Night at The Forum as Chapleau born National Hockey League player honoured The Montreal trip was organized by Olive and Don Card, both of whom were greatly involved in Chapleau hockey for many years. In fact Mrs. Card was known as 'Mrs. Minor Hockey' for her 25 years service as secretarytreasurer of the Chapleau Minor Hockey Association. Don coached minor hockey teams and played for the Chapleau Huskies. The Sudbury Star story says 30 Chapleau people made the trip but lists only 15 who were Mr. and Mrs. Milton Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. J . M . Tu r n e r, A l b e r t B i g n u c o l o , R o g e r Longchamps, Mike Mione, Reggie Sonego, Alison and David McMillan, Raymond Brunette, Romeo Levesque, Eugene Fortin. Keith 'Sonny' Chambers and Baisel Collings. David McMillan and I chatted about this trip when he visited me in Cranbrook several years ago and he advised that Alcide Brunette and Don 'Flappy' Jardine were also there. David has since died. I have included photos of teams which had some players on them who went to Montreal and to provide a glimpse of some local hockey players from the Floyd Curry era in the NHL If any others have details on this trip or were there please let me know. Layton Goodwin who had lived in Nicholson when Curry did told the newspaper "that at the age of four or five young Curry was busy on the ice (Lake Windermere) practising his shots with a broken down stick and an old tin can." Chapleau Moments After retiring as a player, he coached the Montreal Royals, then went on to work for the Canadiens front office for over 40 years as director of sales and travel secretary. In summer of 1968 he was promoted to Assistant General manager. He remained in that position until 1978. During his time in Montreal the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup 6 more times. Writing on his blog Greatest Hockey Legends, Joe Pelletier noted that for most of his hockey life Curry was a modest player happy to stay in the shadows of hockey's spotlight. Most nights, except one. "On Oct 29, 1951 -- with then Princesss Elizabeth and her husband, the Duke of Ediburgh in attendance, " Pelletier wrote, "Curry scored three goals in a 6-1 victory over the New York Rangers. Déjà à la moitié de notre belle saison 2025-2026 ! Nous voilà déjà à la moitié de notre saison de programmation ! Jusqu’à présent, nous avons eu le plaisir d’accueillir des artistes incroyables : François Masicotte, dont l’humour a fait vibrer la salle ; Les Rats de Swompe, qui ont offert un spectacle où l’énergie était palpable ; et Les Chiclettes, avec leur performance pétillante et leur spectacle de Noël qui a charmé petits et grands. Quel plaisir ce fut de les recevoir !Mais ce n’est pas fini : de très beaux spectacles nous attendent encore. En février, nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir Melissa Ouimet, une rockeuse très connue en Ontario, pour un spectacle qui promet de faire bouger la scène et le public. En mars, Caroline Raynaud
présentera son spectacle Les Tétons Tardifs, une performance originale et captivante qui ne manquera pas de surprendre. En avril, Brian St-Pierre, artiste talentueux et énergique, viendra nous enchanter avec sa musique. Et nous terminerons la saison en beauté avec Gabrielle Goulet, sur un double plateau avec Buscadero, pour une soirée musicale mémorable.Et ce n’est pas tout ! Tout au long de l’année, nous continuons également de proposer des activités variées, permettant à notre communauté de se rencontrer, de partager et de célébrer la culture sous toutes ses formes. La saison 2025-2026 est vraiment riche et dynamique, et il reste encore plein de moments à vivre ensemble !

ÉCOLE SACRÉ-COEUR Retour en classe sous le signe de la culture et de la joie ! Après les fêtes, nos élèves poursuivent leurs apprentissages tout en célébrant la richesse des traditions culturelles. Pour l'Épiphanie, la classe a partagé un délicieux gâteau dans lequel se cachait une surprise. Selon la coutume, la cadette a distribué les parts et l'élève qui a trouvé la surprise dans son gâteau a été couronné roi pour la journée, portant fièrement sa couronne ! Cette activité ludique nous permet de souligner la fête des Rois mages, de clore la période de Noël et de renforcer l'identité culturelle. L'équipe de l'école Sacré-Cœur incarne les valeurs du Conseil catholique Nouvelon : foi, inclusion et réussite pour tous.
