reativity was the order of the day at École Sacré-Coeur in Chapleau! Prior to the start of the Christmas holidays, students had a lot of fun making their own Christmas

ornaments to decorate the tree in the school entrance. Once created, students took great pride in finding a place for it in the tree so that they could share their talent and passion for Christmas

with classmates and fellow students.

Congratulations for this wonderful tradition that spreads the Christmas spirit throughout the school community!

Weather Summary for Ontario

December 2023: Where's Winter? Warm and missing snow Temperatures December was an anomalously warm month throughout the entire province. The anomalies in mean monthly temperature were highest in the northwest and decreased, although remaining positive, to the southeast. There were 3 warm waves that swept the province, and remarkably few winter-like cold spells occurred.

During the last week, this pattern came to an end as cooler air, but with only near-normal temperatures, swept across the province.

Generally, the third warm spell was the strongest in terms of standard deviation and the longest in duration, lasting around a week in many locations. In the southwest, double digit daily maximum temperatures were recorded in all three of these warm spells with the highest temperatures near 16oC on the 9th. Only in the first week were significantly cooler temperatures encountered mostly in northeastern and eastern Ontario. On the 7th, Ottawa had its coldest day this month with the maximum temperature reaching only -7.9oC.

Precipitation Precipitation amounts were near typical or drier than normal for most of the province providing little relief to antecedent conditions.

From the map below, we can see that the driest regions were in northwestern and northeastern Ontario near Sioux Lookout and Sudbury, respectively. It was also drier than normal east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Areas from Niagara to Toronto to Ottawa saw slightly above normal precipitation.

During the first week, two systems produced significant precipitation over the south.

Then a weak system crossed most of the province on 7-11th producing snow in the north and more rain in the south. In the third week, much of the eastern portions of the whole province again saw significant precipitation, especially in the southeast where Brockville and Kingston saw over 30 mm of rain on the 18th. In the last week, substantial rain amounts were recorded in the south and northeast with some areas southeast of Lake Huron receiving over 50 mm of rain.

Snowfall Despite mostly near average precipitation amounts for the month, both snowfall and snowcover amounts were both well below average. In eastern Ontario toward the Quebec border, a system brought significant snow and freezing rain on the 3rd. Lake effect snows bands occurred on the 12 and 13th downwind of Lake Superior and Georgian Bay bringing heavy snow squalls (22cm – Orillia, 16cm - Sault Ste Marie). By the end of the month, all station observations reported significantly lower snow depths than normal. Many locations across southern Ontario were snow free with no White Christmas.

Before I go any further let me explain. On July 18, I will have been writing Chapleau Moments for 10 years in the Chapleau Express.

Publisher Mario Lafreniere sent me an email asking if I would consider writing a column. I agreed thinking it would run its course within six months or so.

But here we are 10 years later thanks to some awesome people who have provided assistance. In the beginning, I had my mother's (Muriel E (Hunt) Morris) book of clippings, and shortly thereafter, I inherited four boxes of Chapleau files from my aunt Marion (Morris) Kennedy.

I am forever indebted to the late Anne (Zufelt) McGoldrick and the late Doug Greig who were always there when I needed information.

Michael McMullen, my cousin, and Ian Macdonald, retired head of the department of architecture at the University of Manitoba have been awesome column contributors and researchers. Thanks so much.

Little did I realize that my experience as the Chapleau High School reporter for the long gone Mid North News with Joy (Evans) Heft, and a television program on CHAP TV in 1958/1959 would lead to a lifetime spent telling stories and talking about the stories of others in classrooms in Ontario and British Columbia. And people even hired me to write stories about people and events for daily newspapers, television, magazines and the internet.

As newspaper reporter 1960s I am one of those most blessed people who have never really worked one day because I have been able to spend it living, in the words of Reynolds Price, the American writer, with the sound of story as the dominant sound in my life.

Since I was a child growing up in Chapleau, story has been central to me whether I was playing in the living room or creating my own plays for the Junior Red Cross Society performances in Grade 4 at Chapleau Public School.

Thanks to my mother, Muriel E (Hunt) Morris, who instilled a love of reading in me before I could hardly walk and gave me the freedom to explore all the great children's literature of my time, story has been the place where I have lived. My grandfather George Hunt taught me the story of England while I was playing on the living room floor and my other grandfather Harry Morris, the story of the Canadian Pacific Railway from train timetables.

I recently calculated that I have been doing and teaching communications, journalism, media, and creative writing for about 61 years. It seems like only a moment has passed.

I worked as a reporter and/or editor at several daily newspapers including the StarPhoenix (Saskatoon), Kingston Whig-Standard, Timmins Daily Press, Chatham Daily News, Brampton Times, Calgary Albertan and was northern Ontario correspondent for the Toronto Star.

And yes, as any of my students would tell you, I loved to tell stories. Not all were necessarily appreciated of course, and I was once criticized in student evaluations when I was at College of the Rockies for talking too much about my beloved cat Buckwheat. A student wrote that he/she got nothing from my course because "All he ever did was tell stories about his cat Buckwheat." Even I could not spend fifteen Copnt’d on P.8

NDP: Emergency rooms closing in record numbers as Ford starves the public health care system Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP, is calling for immediate action after an alarming new report reveals vital hospital services are seeing record high closures.

“We are starting to really feel the effects of Ford’s reckless and irresponsible decision to starve our public health care system of resources and people are really worried,” said Stiles. “We rely on public health care to be there when we need it – and this report show that Ford’s decisions are having a huge impact.”

The Ontario Health Coalition (OHC) report found that vital hospital services such as emergency departments, maternity and obstetrics, outpatient laboratories and intensive care units, have been facing repeated closures at an unprecedented rate in the past 3 years.

“Hospitals are a safety net for everyone and these closure rates are absolutely shocking,”said MPP France Gélinas, NDP critic for Health. “Ford has driven burnt out health care professionals away from the system with his cruel wage-caps and diverted public money into private clinics. Now hospitals – especially in Northern Ontario – are bearing the brunt.”

At the beginning of 2023, Ford began diverting resources away from the public system, and into privately owned clinics.

“We deserve a government that takes care of people,” said Stiles. “I’ll be pushing Ford for an explanation today and your Ontario NDP will keep fighting for a system that truly works for everyone – not just wealthy insiders.”

REVIEW Review of Proposed Insect Pest Management Program Abitibi River, Gordon Cosens, Missinaibi, Northshore, Pineland, Romeo Malette, Spanish and Timiskaming Forests The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) invites you to review, and comment on, the proposed insect pest management program and draft projects proposals for specific aerial insecticide projects to control the spruce budworm infestation on the Abitibi River, Gordon Cosens, Missinaibi, Northshore, Pineland, Romeo Malette, Spanish and Timiskaming Forests in the ChapleauWawa, Cochrane-Hearst-Kapuskasing, Timmins-Kirkland Lake, Sault Ste. Marie and, Sudbury Districts. Based upon the analysis of the available insect pest management options, the MNRF is proposing a course of action that includes aerial spraying of insecticide on selected forest stands.

Domestic dispute in Chapleau leads to multiple charges A Chapleau resident is facing multiple charges after an alleged domestic dispute days before Christmas.

Just after 5 a.m. on Dec. 23, Superior East OPP responded to a call on Martel Road in Chapleau.

As a result of the police investigation, a 28-year-old resident of Chapleau is charged with: -Assault causing bodily harm - 2 counts of spousal assault -Forcible confinement -3 counts of domestic mischief -Uttering threats to cause bodily harm The name of the accused is not being released to protect the identity of the victim.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and released. They are scheduled to appear in court again on Jan. 8.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

And yes, I admit that I told hockey stories while I was at Chapleau High School but only when we won!!!!

At College of the Rockies, I was so privileged to have been part of the founding of a graduate New (Social) Media Communications Program which would seem pretty old fashioned

In my office at COTR today, but in 1995 was on the leading edge of the

biggest revolution in communications since sound. Think about it. Now I am off for a walk to Gutenberg's printing press. Since retiring I have hear more of the sound of the story on Main Street.

Thank you, Mario, for giving me the continued to indulge my passion for communications -- for storytelling, both mine and freedom to write Chapleau Moments. Thank you as well to all the people I have heard from over the others.

For example, I listen to the voices of so past 10 years. Totally awesome. many former students who are taking time to share part of their stories with me on Facebook and telling stories about me too. Yes, for old times sake I still write for a print publication the Chapleau Express.

I agree with Reynolds Price, the writer, that to "tell and hear stories is essential" -- and he argues it comes second after nourishment and before love and shelter. "Millions survive without love or home, almost none in silence; the opposite of silence leads quickly to narrative, and the sound of story is the dominant sound of our lives, from the small accounts of our day's events to the vast incommunicable constructs of psychopaths."

Weather Summary for Ontario Cont’d from P.2 Airport saw 11 cm of snow, it had also reported about 12 hours of freezing rain. Minor outages occurred and a winter weather parking ban was in place for the city.

December 23-29: Fog blanketed Southern Ontario Fog developed repeatedly over areas in southern Ontario over the holidays, including Christmas and Boxing Days. At first, the clear sky from high pressure and weak winds were the culprit. As a low pressure hovered over the area during the last week, the added moisture from the rain in combination of the mild temperatures and weak winds allowed fog to form once again. It finally relented as temperatures dipped below freezing over the last weekend of the year.

Ice Conditions in the Great Lakes At the start of December there was a small

amount of ice in Black Bay and Nipigon Bay in Lake Superior. There was also some ice in St. Mary's River and the North Channel in a few sheltered bays at the start of the month. With abnormally warm temperatures during December, the little ice that was there at the start of the month did not expand in area and decreased somewhat from mid-month to the end of the month.

The area of ice coverage for all the Great Lakes was below the normal amount (-7.8% on the 27th) for the entire month with very little actual ice on the Great Lakes. The normal ice coverage for the 27th is only about 0.2%. Any ice on the lakes was and is currently confined to sheltered areas such as Black Bay and Nipigon Bay in Lake Superior.

Outlook for January There are no clear signals for

temperatures for the month. The only exception is areas north of Lake Superior around Lake Nipigon where the outlook is pointing to a belownormal January. For precipitation, apart from a below-normal outlook for areas around Lake of the Woods, there is no clear signal for the rest of the province.
