A delegation from Chapleau, represented by True North Timber participated in the Freedom 2022 Convoy. The Convoy was originally planned to protest the vaccination requirements to cross over the US/Canada border. Similar protests have migrated to other countries in a worldwide display of dissatisfaction with governments and their handing of the Covid-19 rules and regulations. Waters were muddied by right wing factions that took advantage of the occasion to bring forth protests unrelated to the trucker's original intentions.

Funding Still Available for Non-Profit Organizations in the Superior East Region The Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation is a non-profit regional organization covering the Superior East region which includes the area from Pic Mobert First Nation to Chapleau. It offers small business loans and counselling as well as regional community development services. The Regional Relief and Recovery Community Development Fund still has a limited amount of funds available to nonprofit organizations to assist them in recovering from the pandemic. The RRRCD Fund is available to First Nations, municipalities, economic development corporations or other nonprofit community organizations. The program can provide up to $5,000 in non-repayable funding for initiatives that support economic and social goals.

Some examples include seminars or workshops,

marketing, special events, moving to online, workplace modifications, personal protective equipment, etc. All projects must be completed prior to March 31, 2022.

Another program available to local employers is the Northeastern Ontario Youth Internship Program. It is available to employers to assist with hiring a youth intern. The project must be related to innovation, digital economy or trade.

The program can contribute up to 50% (to a maximum of $31,500) for the eligible costs of s a l a r y, e m p l o y e e b e n e f i t e x p e n s e s , professional/business skills development and associated travel costs for a period of 12 months in a full-time position. During the 2021 year the corporation authorized $1,000,500 of local regular loans and $48,397 in regional loans. A total of $360,250 in RRRF loans was also approved. The grand total for the year amounts to $1,409,147. These loans have created or maintained 48 jobs in the region and leveraged $2,168,500 from other sources.

Since inception in 1989 a total of $27,371,342 in loans have been approved and disbursed in the region. This has served to create or maintain a total of 2,951 in jobs at a cost per job of $9,275.

Michael J. Morris It never entered my mind that I may now be in the Winter years of my life until I received an email from a friend. She expressed the thought that we are in the “Winter” of our years and may have arrived there sooner than we thought.

It was a most kind message, but it got me thinking about the Winter of my years -- was I really there now?

Just because I turned 80 last November surely does not mean I have entered the Winter of my years!!!

Gosh, it seems like just yesterday that I was cruising the sidewalks of Chapleau on my tricycle and making the trip up and over the horseshoe bridge to visit my grandparents. Lil and Harry Morris, on the other side of town. That was in the 1940s.

It doesn't seem that long ago since I started in Grade One at Chapleau Public School and enjoyed every moment of the eight years I spent there. My mother, Muriel E. (Hunt) Morris, who many of you knew, taught at CPS for 32

Entering the "Winter" years of my life .... not quite yet folks!!! years and we had an arrangement that I would not bother her with "son stuff" ever, and it worked.

Maybe not 100 percent effectively but almost!

Principal J.M. Shoup sent all the boys to the office me included to get the strap for our involvement in a huge snowball fight.

And, it would have been a disaster for me with the other kids if Mr. Shoup had let me off, particularly because I was guilty. I actually loved snowball fights. Well, maybe one close call, as Mom was my teacher in Grade Six, and treated me like everyone else, even on the day I got the strap, and had to enter the room while she was reading the afternoon story to the class. She just continued reading and never mentioned the incident.

In Grade Four with Alison McMillan, Ted Demers, and Brian Demers, I was part of my first drama production, a swashbuckler complete with costumes made by Mrs. Marianne Demers to raise funds for the Junior Red Cross Society.

Great fun, and I thought about it every time I directed a play.

It was only 67 years ago since I started Grade Nine at Chapleau High School in 1955, and I have fond memories to this day of the positive influence John 'Mac' McClellan, George Lemon, two of the principals, and Dr Karl A Hackstetter and his wife Mrs. Hackstetter, had on me. Roland Michaud and Richard Murchland were two of the best English teachers I had anywhere and contributed immensely to the "sound of story" being alive in all I have done ever since. Like every kid I had my favourite teachers, and these happened to be mine.

High school days were awesome, and I made many new friends who arrived at the same time from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Separate School. The annual inspection of 1181 Chapleau High School Cadet Corps, banquet and dance were highlights of every school year.

I attended Waterloo Lutheran University now Wilfrid Laurier University from 1960 to 1964 --and also attended Lakehead University, University of Toronto, and University of British Columbia To visit with so many of my students at the CHS reunion in 2012, was a very special moment. I hope to attend the 100th anniversary reunion of the school this year.

It was only a moment ago that my mother and I got on the evening Canadian Pacific Railway train for an overnight ride to Toronto to visit family and friends there, or board another train to head into the United States to visit folks there.

It seems that it was only yesterday that my cousins were singing 'She'll be Coming Round the Mountain' on the day our grandmother,

Mom and I heading to overhead bridge Edythe Hunt, arrived home from England in 1944 after serving as a Red Cross nurse with the British Army in England since 1939 during World War II. I told them she was coming from Toronto and there were no mountains on the route.

It doesn't seem that long ago since I took my first airplane ride over Pittsburgh in a Piper Cub with Iven Nichol as the pilot, one of my father, Jim Morris' best friends from RCAF days, and his daughter Sandy as the other passenger.

That was about 1953, only 69 years ago.

When I am out and about, I sometimes still sing 'Heart of My Heart' that our Bantam team sang over and over again in our private railway car on the way to and from Sudbury to play hockey in 1954.

I wasn't a very good hockey player but loved the game, so Don and Olive M. Card and Garth "Tee" Chambers made it possible for me to become a referee, even sending me to a school in North Bay. And I remember like it was only yesterday that Sunday afternoon in 1956 when Tee gave me my first referee's sweater and I worked a game with him in the Chapleau Memorial Arena.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been exceptionally difficult on everyone. Whether you have lost a loved one to Covid-19; you have been overworked and exhausted on the front lines in hospitals and ICUs; you have struggled to balance work and life while trying to help educate your children at home; you have lost a job in the service, arts or tourism industries; the pandemic has pushed each of us to our limits. And yet we persist, helping our friends and neighbours while doing what we can to prevent the spread of the virus.

This growing frustration is palpable. Two years of uncertainty is a lot for any individual to handle, let alone a nation. We have done our part: we've cancelled plans, we've isolated when feeling sick, we've listened to the expert advice of medical professionals and scientists and acted accordingly, including following their recommendations on vaccinations. Like you, I am frustrated that life has not yet returned to normal and that we are still having to readjust our routines, our work environments, and our lives.

For some, this frustration has boiled over, and with the news of a convoy heading to Ottawa,

Freedom Convoy Takes the Air out of Ottawa led by a cohort of truck drivers frustrated by recent cross-border vaccination requirements, others took the opportunity to join in protesting all Covid-19 mandates. This was a way to express concerns and disapproval about how both federal and provincial governments have handled aspects of the pandemic and certain measures that were put in place.

However, what may not have been apparent to many supporters of the movement at the outset was the motives of some organizers and participants, which included the ridiculous notion of making themselves the government by decree and protesting provincial mandates against the backdrop of the Federal government.

Freedom of expression and association, including the right to peaceful protest, are fundamental rights that apply to all causes that we may or may not agree on, providing that it does not promote hatred or violence. However, what was promised as a peaceful demonstration has been plagued with acts most people would deem unacceptable. We have seen protestors sporting swastikas, Confederate flags, and other racist signs and paraphernalia. Vehicles were parked on the National War Memorial, and people danced and urinated on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (one of our nation's most sacred symbols of sacrifices made by our veterans). Others made a mockery of the Terry Fox statue by decorating it with antivaccination signs, homes and establishments flying Pride flags have been targeted. These acts are unacceptable by any metric, and as a result, the House of Commons voted unanimously to

condemn the use of Nazi and antisemitic symbols, anti-Muslim rhetoric, the display of racist flags, and anti-LGBTQ+ harassment.

There have also been reports of aggression, including reports of assaults and reprehensible behavior towards staff and residents at a homeless shelter where protesters demanded food. They have put our nation's capital in a chokehold. People can't get to work, businesses have been forced to close just when they were going to reopen, schools have closed, and citizens have been subjected to verbal abuse and had to deal with incessant noise throughout day and night.

Although I have not always agreed with how the Federal and Provincial governments have been managing this pandemic, whether through policies, directions, support programs or decision making, we all realize that the focus has been on protecting the population and trying to minimize the impact on our already fragile health care system, which has been underfunded for too long.

It is however evident that what has been missing is clarity surrounding what the government's plans are moving forward so we can return to a normal life while living within the endemic period.

There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Covid-19 cases are falling after a significant fourth wave, 82 percent of Canadians are fully vaccinated, ICU cases are stabilizing, and businesses are starting to reopen. We can and we will get through this pandemic with the mutual understanding that we're all in this together.

Néanmoins, nous persévérons en aidant nos amis et nos voisins, tout en faisant ce que nous pouvons pour limiter la propagation du virus.

Nous sentons monter la frustration. Deux années d'incertitude, c'est beaucoup à endurer pour une personne, encore plus pour une nation. Nous avons fait notre part : nous avons annulé nos plans, nous nous sommes isolés lorsque nous nous sentions malades, nous avons écouté les conseils médicaux des professionnels de la santé et des scientifiques et nous avons agi en conséquence, notamment en suivant leurs recommandations liées à la vaccination. Tout comme vous, je suis frustrée que la vie ne soit pas revenue à la normale et que nous ayons toujours à réajuster nos routines, nos environnements de travail et nos vies.

Chez certains, cette frustration a éclaté. Ils ont vu dans les nouvelles un convoi mené par un groupe de camionneurs frustrés par les récentes exigences de vaccinations pour franchir la frontière qui se dirigeait vers Ottawa et y ont perçu un appel à l'action contre tous les mandats de la pandémie. Ils se sont joints au convoi pour exprimer leurs inquiétudes et leur mécontentement

quant à la manière dont le gouvernement fédéral et les gouvernements provinciaux ont géré divers aspects de la pandémie et quant à certaines mesures qui ont été mises en place. Or, ce que de nombreux partisans du mouvement n'ont peut-être pas bien saisi au départ, ce sont les motifs de certains organisateurs et participants, qui voulaient notamment former le gouvernement par décret et protester contre les obligations vaccinales provinciales, avec le gouvernement fédéral en toile de fond.

La liberté d'expression et d'association, y compris le droit de manifester pacifiquement, sont des droits fondamentaux qui s'appliquent à toutes les causes, que nous les appuyions ou non, à condition qu'elles ne fassent pas la promotion de la haine ou de la violence.

Or, ce qui était promis comme une manifestation pacifique a été entaché d'actes que la plupart des gens jugent inacceptables. Nous avons vu des manifestants arborant des croix gammées et brandissant des drapeaux confédérés, et d'autres signes et accessoires racistes. Des véhicules ont été stationnés sur le Monument commémoratif de guerre et des gens ont dansé et uriné sur la tombe du Soldat inconnu (un des symboles canadiens les plus sacrés qui rappelle les sacrifices consentis par nos anciens combattants).

D'autres ont tourné en dérision la statue de Terry Fox en la décorant de signes anti-vaccination, des établissements arborant des drapeaux de la Fierté ont été prises pour cible. Ces actes sont tout à fait inacceptables et ils ont amené la Chambre des communes à voter à l'unanimité pour condamner l'utilisation de symboles nazis et antisémites, la rhétorique antimusulmane,

l'usage de drapeaux racistes et le harcèlement antiLGBTQ+.

Des agressions ont été signalées, notamment des cas de voies de fait et de comportements répréhensibles à l'endroit d'employés et de résidents d'un refuge pour sans-abri, où des manifestants tentaient d'obtenir un repas. Ils étouffent notre capitale nationale. Des entreprises ont été forcées de fermer alors qu'elles s'apprêtaient à rouvrir, des écoles ont fermé et des citoyens subissent de la violence verbale et ont dû composer avec un bruit incessant du jour au soir.

Je n'ai pas toujours été d'accord avec la façon dont les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux ont géré cette pandémie (que ce soit par l'entremise de politiques, de directives, de programmes de soutien et de prises de décisions), mais nous réalisons tous que leurs décisions ont toujours été axées sur la protection de la population et visaient toujours à minimiser les répercussions sur notre système de santé déjà fragilisé, qui est sous-financé depuis trop longtemps.

Cependant, il est évident que ce qui manque, c'est la clarté sur les plans du gouvernement pour que nous puissions retourner à une vie normale, tout en vivant dans la période de l'endémie.

On voit la lumière au bout du tunnel. Les cas de COVID-19 ont diminué après une quatrième vague qui a atteint des sommets inégalés, 82 % des Canadiens sont pleinement vaccinés, les hospitalisations aux soins intensifs se stabilisent, les entreprises commencent à rouvrir. Nous pouvons surmonter cette pandémie et nous le ferons comprenant que nous sommes tous dans le même bateau.

I stopped riding my bicycle a few years ago because I started to become concerned about a tumble. And I curse the city now when the sidewalks aren't plowed in the winter immediately after a snowstorm even though I was raised in a village where side streets may never be plowed.

Yes, I walk by those new tennis courts on Second Street North in Cranbrook BC where I live now and want to go and play just one set for old times' sake but realistically it ain't gonna happen. But I recall so well Eric Young, Greg Lucas, and Rev Frank Leigh who taught me to play on the court beside the rectory at St. John's Anglican Church, starting in the 1950s.

But, I walk about five miles a day, and swim at least 250 metres daily -- well kinda, but I have to admit that I use a noodle for assistance -but the lifeguards at the Cranbrook Aquatic Centre guide me. And who am I to argue. Most are about 50 years or so younger than me.

As I reflect on the subject of the Winter years though by looking back to go forward, I can CHS principal John McClellan only say, Not quite yet!

Help stop the spread of norovirus Public Health Sudbury & Districts is seeing an increase in gastrointestinal illness, likely due to norovirus in childcare centers and in the community.

Norovirus is present in the stool and vomit of those infected. It is spread primarily through personto-person contact, or contamination of food prepared by a person who is currently ill or has been recently ill and did not wash their hands properly. Very common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Less common symptoms may include headache, body aches, and sometimes fever.

The symptoms of norovirus infection are similar to those caused by other gastrointestinal and respiratory viruses, including the virus that causes COVID-19 infection. It can be difficult to know exactly what virus is causing the infection.

Norovirus symptoms most often present very suddenly and involve frequent and multiple episodes of vomiting and diarrhea that last for 1 to 2 days.

People with norovirus do not have respiratory symptoms such as cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, or shortness of breath, which are more likely to indicate the virus is respiratory in nature, even if accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. People with norovirus typically become ill 24 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus and they can spread the virus in their stool for up to several days after the symptoms stop. Recently Minister of Health Christine Elliott told the people of Ontario that the government decided to allow individual school boards and health care facilities to develop their own vaccination mandates. The reason for this, Elliott said, was that many hospitals across the Province had opposed the government mandating vaccinations. But, then, just days ago, CBC Radio Canada revealed that there were not “many hospitals” that objected, but rather only one hospital in the entire Province.

Doug Ford's decision not to listen to hospitals and public health officials only served to embolden anti-vaxxers and increase the rampant chaos Ontario is experiencing. NDP Health Critic France Gélinas said, “Thanks to Mr. Ford, the Province requires a vaccine certificate to eat a hamburger in a diner in Ontario, but not to work in a pediatric intensive care unit with unvaccinated and incredibly vulnerable children. People deserve better protection than that.

“Now that we have confirmation that nearly every hospital supports a vaccine mandate, let's get that mandate in place right now for all health care and all education workers — and let's make all three doses currently available a part of that mandate, including booster shots.”

Is it just me, or does it seem like the Conservatives and Liberals are cut from the same cloth? Ontarians deserve affirmative, effective leadership that shows genuine concern for people and demonstrates consistency and integrity. We don't have to just settle for more of the same old same old.
