2022 has been, by all accounts, an interestingyear. It'sbeenfilledwithsurprises, significantworldeventsthathavetestedCanadians, and advancements that will make life better for people.As2022drawstoanend,andweeaseinto theChristmasseason,it'simportanttolookback onsomeofthechallengesthathaveoccurred, the successesthathavebeenachieved, andthework that'sstillaheadofus.

Let's start with some of the challenges we'vefaced.WeenteredtheyearwithCovidstill atthetopofmind, withtheOmicronwavetaking its toll across the country and around the world. While the virus is still with us, that early wave was when we really saw Covid hit its peak in Canada, with a steady decline in the number of casessincethattime.Comingoffthebackofthat wave, theFreedomConvoyrolledintoOttawa. It wasaprotestunlikeanyseeninCanada, andone that proved divisive and challenging for many Canadians.

Thereafter, Russia illegally invaded Ukraine which saw Canadians quickly opened theirheartstothosefleeingwarandcommittedto supporting our allies in Ukraine to the largest extent possible. The world was then gripped by aninflationcrisisand, althoughweareseeingthe

In the Summer, the Papal visit was an important moment of reflection for the role the Catholic Church played in Canada's residential schoolsystem, withPopeFrancisfinallynaming the system what it had always been: a genocide against First Nations peoples. The government followed suit, which saw parliament pass an NDP motion unanimously which recognizes what happened at residential schools as a genocide.

Canada lost it's longest-serving Sovereign,QueenElizabeth II.Herpassingwas metwithavarietyofemotionsandsomedifficult conversations. Many loved and mourned her, othersopinedthatitwastimetohavethedifficult conversation about Canada's role in the monarchy.

And the cracks in our cherished public health care system started to become more visible, withmanyhospitalsrunningovercapacity, which has seen some concerning moves towards privatization of some aspects of our healthcarebyafewprovinces.

Given these challenges, it can often feel like the world is an overwhelming place, but there were important accomplishments that are worth highlightingto show that we can move in therightdirectionifwepushhardenough.

This year's federal budget featured the single largest expansion in public health care in Canada in over 50 years with the inclusion of $5.3billiontowardthedevelopmentofauniversaldentalcareplan,madepossiblebecauseofthe

On housing, we managed to secure significant investments to make affordable housing more available. This included a $1.5 billion investment to extend the Rapid Housing Initiative to build affordable housing, and $4.5 billion in Indigenous housing investments, double what the government promised in their platform.Additionally, wepushedforandgained a $500 one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefittohelp950,000low-incomehouseholds.

HowCanadianscanhelpbuildreconciliation

(NC) The discovery of mass and unmarked graves of children at former residential school sitesacrossCanadaduringthelasttwoyearshave highlighted the importance of education and raising awareness of the true history of residentialschoolsinCanada.

Awarenessandeducationarejustonestep on the path to reconciliation. Organizations can play an important role in communities, build cultural understanding and inspire people to act and to move reconciliation forward between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Here arefourwayswecancontinuetheconversation.

WalkforWenjack

At the age of 12, Chanie Wenjack ran away from the residential school he’d been sent tothreeyearsearlierinKenora,Ontario, hoping to reunite with his family in Ogoki Post, 600 kilometres away.Aweek after he fled to escape the abuse and brutality of the school, his body wasfoundalongsidearailwaytrack.Hehaddied fromstarvationandexposure.

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) was formed to “build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and nonIndigenous peoples.” Walk for Wenjack events take place during Secret Path Week, held every year in October to remember Chanie and the more than 150,000 Indigenous children who weresenttoresidentialschool.

LegacySpaces

Funded by the DWF, legacy spaces are safe, welcomingplacesintendedtoinspireaction by providing education on Indigenous history, furthering the journey towards reconciliation. The program helps corporations, governments and educational institutions play an important roleinreconciliationintheircommunities.

CanadianChristmasTraditionsThroughoutProvinces

While many Canadian Christmas traditions are strikingly similar to those celebrated in the U.S., the many diverse provinceshaveuniquetakesonthejollyholiday. With influences from Scotland, England, Germany,France,andtheU.S.,Canadiansenjoy arichholidayfilledwithfamilyandtradition.

ChristmasinCanada

Canadians share more than just a border with the United States. Many of the holiday traditions are similar to those celebrated by peopleintheU.S.

ChristmasTreesandWreaths

For example, the Christmas tree is a decoration found in many Canadian homes. Although it is originally a German Christmas tradition,CanadiansloveChristmastrees.Infact, the country produces about 70,000 acres of Christmas trees each year. Advent wreaths and Christmaswreathsadornmanyhomesduringthe holidays, as well. Canada exports about 1.8 million trees a year, and its residents have enjoyedthetraditionsince1781when,according totheCanadianEncyclopedia, abaronessplaced a tree in her home and decorated it with white candles.

ChristmasEve

Children anxiously await the arrival of SantaonChristmasEve,althoughsomefamilies may wait until New Year's Day for present exchanges. Christmas stockings are hung with the hopes of being filled with presents and goodiesthenextmorning.LikeAmericans, many CanadianchildrenbelieveSantacomesdownthe chimney and leaves presents by the tree to be found in the morning. Some families do all of their gift-opening on Christmas Eve instead of ChristmasDay.

MidnightMass

Christian Canadians often attend a midnight mass, one of the oldest traditions in Canada, inwhichcongregantsenjoyavarietyof worship music styles ranging from traditional organandchoirstomodernworshipbands. Many of Canada's oldest and most beautiful churches are rich with history and offer a memorable atmosphere during the mass. The mass is followedbyalargedinnercalledaréveillon.

ChristmasCards

In general, Canadians have been known for restraint in their gift-giving. If they practice restraint in that area, they are more liberal with the giving of Christmas cards, another tradition Canadians share with people in the U. S. It is a popular tradition, and family members often includemoneyintheircards.

Jolly Old Saint Nicolas

Jolly old Saint Nicholas, lean your ear this way! Don't you tell a single soul what I'm going to say: Christmas Eve is coming soon; now, you dear old man Whisper what you'll bring to me; tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve, when I'm fast asleep Down the chimney, broad and black, with your pack you'll creep All the stockings you will find hanging in a row Mine will be the shortest one, you'll be sure to know

Bobby wants a pair of skates, Suzy wants a sled Nellie wants a picture book, yellow, blue, and red Now I think I'll leave to you what to give the rest Choose for me, dear Santa Claus; you will know the best.

It's the most wonderful time of the year

It's the most wonderful time of the year. With the kids jingle belling, and everyone telling you, "Be of good cheer," It's the most wonderful time of the year.

There'll be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling out in the snow.

there'll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. There'll be much mistletoeing and hearts will be glowing, when loved ones are near.

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

For most of us, Christmas is one of the most treasured seasons of the year. It is a time steeped in tradition, warmth, and love. Whether you are a child, young at heart, or believe you havesatundermoreChristmastreeboughsthan you'dliketoadmit, wecanstillwitnessincredible wispsofmagicthatsomehowseemtoweaveinto reality.

However, at the risk of bursting your idyllic Christmas bubble, I must warn you of a severe storm brewing in the NewYear. And it is heading right at all Ontarians. The edge of the stormhasbeenconfirmedintheformofBill39, the Better Municipal Governance Act, and Bill 23,theMoreHomesBuiltFasterAct.

The people of Ontario value democracy. Ontarians are right to be concerned about PremierDougFord'slatestpoliticalploys. These actseffectivelygrabpowerfromdemocratically elected municipal decision-makers. And since whendotheprinciplesofdemocracyincludethe idealsthatdecisionsshouldbemadewithaslittle asone-thirdsupportofdulyelectedofficials?

Well, it seems that is what Premier Ford believes democracy looks like. Bills 23 and 39 areploysdesignedtooverridelawsprotectingthe environmentandEarth'snaturalsystems—allin

thenameofexpansion,development,powerand individualeconomicgain.

TheConservativeGovernmentsaysthey createdBills23and39tosolveOntario'shousing affordability crisis. But let there be no mistake; they are also attacks on democracy that will do nothing to resolve our housing crisis or build affordablehomes.Instead, themainbutcloaked goaloftheseplansistonicelypadthecoffersof wealthydeveloperswhoarePCdonors.

The funny thing is, I don't recall Doug Ford sharing such views or plans before the last election. Do you? He went on record saying, “Unequivocally, we won't touch the Greenbelt.” Mr.FordtoldtheOntarioLegislature,“Ihavenot touched the Greenbelt, we won't touch the Greenbelt, wewon'tbuildontheGreenbelt.”

ItisinterestingtonotethatPremierFord seems to apply the same upside-down view of democracy to public opinion as well. A recent survey by Mainstreet Poll found that 12 percent of Ontarians disapprove of the Ford Government'splansforhousingandthechanges to mayoral powers and 55 percent strongly disapprove.Thatmeans67percentofallOntario votersopposedhisplans.Further, atotalofonly 26 percent approve or strongly approve of the policies. Even so, Mr. Ford continues to forge ahead.

Premier Ford and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark say they are puttingforthanolivebranchbyofferingtoswap existing greenbelt lands for other undeveloped lands. But Edward McDonnell, the CEO of the GreenbeltFoundation, saidthatitisnotquitethat simple. McDonnell said, “There's a danger with land swaps in terms of breaking up systems that

arecriticaltotheGreenbelt'ssuccess.Youknow, water resource systems, natural systems, agricultural systems. And what's made the Greenbelt really important to Ontario for a long timeisthefactthatitdoesprotectthesecomplete systems.”

As readers know, the Lieutenant Governor is the King's representative here in Ontario. The role is primarily symbolic and ceremonial and is strictly a nonpartisan appointment.TheLt.Governorneveroffersany personal or political advice. So it is very telling that, just days ago, Lieutenant Governor ElizabethDowdeswellcouldnothelpbutexpress concerns similar to those of the people of Ontario.

Offering the King's good wishes for the Christmas Season from the Speaker's Chair, she said,“EverytimeIgetinvitedintothischamber,I walk in with a sense of awe, but I also — and maybe it's particularly this year — feel a heavy weight: the weight of obligation, the weight of opportunitytoprotectandnurturesomethingthat we all hold so precious, and that's our democracy.” InanodtoUkraine, shesaid,“We see a fragility in democracies around the world, and Canada is no different. Democracy is an interestingword. It'ssomuchmorethanavote;it really is about how we choose to live our lives togetherincommunity.”
