ÉSC Trillium students discover Indigenous Ingenuity Several students from École secondaire catholique Trillium (Chapleau) students recently had the great opportunity to gain valuable information from Science North's impressive travelling exhibition on Indigenous ingenuity. The students loved the interactive stations that helped them learn more about inventions that are still relevant today. Indigenous peoples from North America have long demonstrated a great sense of ingenuity, using nature as inspiration. The world we know today is influenced by their innovations and scientific knowledge. This exhibition presented a clever and novel mix of science and culture intended to stir a sense of pride
among First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities. This Science Nord exhibition also celebrated the diversity, interconnectedness,
and resourceful ways of knowing and being, that Indigenous knowledge and innovations provide in the global community.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday from our family and staff at Pro North Electric.

CHS Band in parade circa 1956 The old saying that everyone loves a parade sure applied to Chapleau throughout its history playing a major role in celebrations from its earliest beginnings after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885. Browsing through old photographs and "Googling" it seems that the first parades were associated with Dominion Day, now Canada Day on July 1, but through the years, there would be other ones hosted by organizations such as the Orange Lodge, Knights of Columbus, and after 1926, Branch No. 5 of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Legion took over the July 1 celebrations. By 1937, with D.O. Payette, then the president of Smith and Chapple Ltd. as the "catalyst" according to a report at the time, with his business partner Arthur Grout as chairman, the Chapleau Winter Carnival was launched. Carnivals were planned in Mr. Payette's office. Jimmy Purich became parade marshal and would lead the parade on a white horse from the CPR station from where it formed up over the
winter carnival too. The Chapleau Band, first called Chapleau Brass Band, would appear to have been part of parades from about 1887 on and it even travelled to other communities to participate in their celebrations. A bugle band was formed at Chapleau High School after the cadet corps was founded about 1926 and was directed by principal and teacher John 'Mac' McClellan. A parade around town was always part of the annual inspection.
B.W. Zufelt with Bev Machan 1956 After B.W. 'Bubs' Zufelt became reeve in 1948, the Chapleau Recreation Commission was formed and a Beach Day celebration on the first Monday in August was added, including a parade. The carnival queen was also a feature attraction in parades.

REPORT from OTTAWA Rapport d’Ottawa
Reflecting on the Challenges of 2023
by/par
Carol Hughes Federal member of Parliament Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing
Certains Canadiens, Suite P.20

Algoma District School Board's Chair Jennifer Sarlo and Director of Education Lucia Reece gratefully accepted the donation from Neil McLean, President, Rotary Club of Sault Ste Marie North and shared that this donation will go a long way to support the purchase of fresh fruit, milk, yogurt, cereals and other healthy options which are much needed by some students who arrive at school without breakfast or snacks for the day. Now more than ever, food programs are important for children and youth in our schools. The need for these programs continues to grow and the programs are being utilized by students in almost all ADSB elementary and secondary schools. Studies have shown that children whose nutritional needs are met have fewer attendance and discipline problems, and their ability to learn is enhanced. For 15 years, the Sault North Rotary Club has conducted its "Trip of the Month" fundraiser. From the draw's proceeds, the club funds, among other initiatives, youth leadership development,
Ontario Investing in New Forest Sector Technology
Funding will help Distinctive Wood Products expand to new markets and create jobs The Ontario government is investing over $1 million in Distinctive Wood Products, a manufacturer of kitchen cabinets and accessories. This investment will increase production by 40 per cent, boost U.S. export sales by almost 300 per cent and create nine new jobs at the company – and up to nine additional jobs throughout the forest sector supply chain. “We are investing in businesses like Distinctive Wood Products to create jobs and strengthen our forest sector supply chain,” said Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “This is good news for the Kitchener-Waterloo region, for Ontario's forest sector and for consumers on both sides of the border who will enjoy greater access to high-quality cabinets and accessories.” The total expansion project is valued at $4.4 million and will now add automated sanding equipment and a finishing system which hardens paint to prepare completed products for market. This investment will increase production capacity, reducing waste and allow Distinctive Wood Products to fulfill orders more quickly. The improvements are expected to boost the company's revenue by 56 per cent. To ramp up production, Distinctive Wood Products will increase its purchases of Ontario-made medium density fibreboard by 55 per cent, increasing demand for harvesting companies, sawmills and trucking – adding $4.3 million to Ontario's forest supply chain each year. Funding for this project is being provided through the Forest Sector Investment and Innovation Program, a business support program designed to improve productivity and innovation, enhance competitiveness, support new market access and strengthen regional economies. Projects like this, which build a more competitive forest sector through technological innovation, are critical to achieving Ontario's goals in 'Sustainable Growth: Ontarios Forest Sector Strategy and the Forest Biomass Action Plan.

Damaging Blanding's Turtle Habitat - Order to pay $48,000 to assist in recovery of Species
The Ontario government is safeguarding biodiversity by enforcing habitat protection for species protected under the Endangered Species Act. Timothy Hunt of McDougall pleaded
guilty to damaging the habitat of Blanding’s Turtle, a species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. He was ordered to pay $48,000 to the Georgian Bay Biosphere organization to assist in the protection and recovery of the species. The court heard that between May 2016 and June 2017, Hunt did road work within the Shebeshekong We t l a n d C o n s e r v a t i o n Reserve without first obtaining a permit. While doing the work he damaged a Blanding’s Turtle habitat. Justice of the Peace Madeleine Paul heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on October 25, 2023.

Annual aerial moose surveys underway The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is conducting moose aerial inventory surveys in wildlife management units across Ontario to help monitor moose populations. Between December and February, staff
are using aircraft to look for moose and their tracks in fresh, deep snow. Survey information about the number, age and sex of moose is used to inform moose and habitat management. Most of our survey flights will take place over Northern Ontario, near Kenora, Fort Frances, Dryden, Geraldton, Nipigon, Manitouwadge, Wawa, Chapleau, Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Moosonee and Hearst. We will also survey areas around Parry Sound, Bracebridge, Bancroft, Pembroke and North
Bay. As is the case every year, survey completion depends on appropriate weather conditions and adequate snow to ensure staff can reliably detect moose and their tracks from aircraft. More information about moose management and monitoring is available at www.ontario.ca/page/moose-populationmanagement. Follow Ontario Fish and Wildlife on social media for seasonal moose aerial inventory updates.

The joy of reading at École Sacré-Coeur During the month of November, École Sacré-Coeur (Chapleau) launched a reading challenge for students from Kindergarten to grade 6. Each class had to keep track of the number of minutes they spent reading in an
effort to accumulate as many minutes as possible. The students and class with the most minutes then won a prize. The grand prize went to the grade 2 and 3 classroom, who accumulated no less than 9490 minutes of
reading time. What a success! Together, all the students managed to accumulate an impressive total of 25,800 minutes of reading. Well done, everyone!

Last weeks solutions MOMENTS IN TIME On Jan. 6, 2000, a severe flu outbreak in the United Kingdom caused National Health Service hospitals to be stretched to their limits, leaving many forced to cancel all non-emergency surgeries and facing intensive care bed shortages. The outbreak was blamed on a low rate of flu vaccinations.

Algoma-Manitoulin – The whole is greater than the sum of its parts The Festive season is certainly in full swing now. I have already attended more events and celebrations throughout the riding than I can count. I've been following this tradition for more than a decade now. The traditional song says, “It is the most wonderful time of the year.” I join constituents where they live, work and play during this holiday season and yearround. I attend parades, music festivals, powwows, fairs, competitions, fundraising events, craft shows and art shows. I am invited to countless funding grant announcements where someone behind the scenes worked their tail off advocating for a needed community project and jumped through endless bureaucratic hoops to obtain the necessary funding. And I can't believe how many outstanding individuals are honoured for their service and volunteerism in the community. Whether running behind my truck in a parade handing out treats, dancing on the powwow grounds or plunging to the bottom of a dunk tank, I not only see the smiling faces of onlookers and participants taking in the events and occasions, but I also can see the faces of the generous and talented individuals who work behind the scenes for weeks or months to make the

Most of us naturally focus on our immediate area as we rely upon local newspapers, radio stations and community newsletters to inform us of the good things happening. But my job allows me to understand that the whole (riding) is greater than the sum of its parts. So when you hear that someone in your area is being recognized for outstanding community service, that your township has been granted funding for a seniors program of facility upgrade or that there was a record-breaking turnout at a parade or festival, keep in mind that we have nearly 40 townships and communities as well as more than 20 First Nations. And the same kind of outstanding citizens and leaders celebrate similar achievements and add joy to people's lives all over Algoma-Manitoulin. And to those individuals and groups, I extend a hearty thank you for your time, energy, and care. People like you make all the difference.
