“Those small business owners that have managed to keep their heads above water have shown extraordinary resiliency to survive, but many are still struggling to make ends meet with mounting debts, reduced revenue and more costs to keep their workers and customers safe. Talk to any business owner and they’ll tell you the last thing they need is the threat of eviction looming over them again.”

After pressure from the NDP Official Opposition, Doug Ford reluctantly agreed to a temporarily ‘pause’ commercial evictions but the moratorium is set to expire on Aug. 31. While Ontario continues to battle the pandemic, and while the economy remains in turmoil, Fife said now is not the time to allow landlords to evict their commercial tenants. Only this week, a new report revealed that Ontario’s real GDP is set to plummet by 7.6 per cent this year and unemployment is still at 11.3 per cent, compared to 5.5 per cent in February.

“The driving force of Ontario’s economic recovery will be small businesses. We need to protect them from shutting down and give them the breathing room they need to start re-hiring workers and start growing again,” said Fife.

“The pandemic is not over and businesses are not even close to being out of the woods. It makes no economic sense to make small businesses vulnerable to eviction right now.

Instead the Ford government should be offering more direct support, including rent relief, to save Main Street and protect jobs.”

Main Street plan proposes a series to measures to support small businesses, charities and community-based non-profits, including: • A 75 per cent commercial rent subsidy up to $10,000 a month for three months • A utility payment freeze • A safe restart and remote-work set up fund, which could help businesses install plexiglass barriers or buy PPE • An auto insurance grace period for taxis and car-sharing drivers, established in partnership with the insurance industry and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority • A designated emergency fund for small businesses and entrepreneurs who have faced historic barriers to accessing traditional capital, as proposed by the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce.

Michael J. Morris In the beginning Walter Broomhead attended a Chapleau Chamber of Commerce meeting in March 1973, and proposed that a twoday Arts and Crafts Fall Fair be held in the Centennial Museum building.

That was way back in 1973, and the first one was launched in October of that year and they have become an integral part of Chapleau life ever since.

Staunchly supported by his wife Kathleen (Kay) and they have become an integral part of Chapleau life ever since.

When I saw the post on the Facebook page of the Arts and Crafts Fall Fair Committee

by Melanie Mallek on August 18 that it had made "the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 fall fair due to COVID -19 Pandemic. " The committee's Facebook page, and I highly recommend you take some time to scroll through it for highlights of past fairs.

Melanie advised that with the current public health restriction in place, it is not possible to plan and make preparations as normally would. Added to that issue is the difficulty to manage social distancing for an event the size of the fair.

"The most important thing now is the health and safety of everyone who makes the fair what it is - our committee members, volunteers, vendors & attendees - so we believe this is the best decision!"

I went into my files such as they are back to 1973, and decided to share the story of the beginning of the arts and crafts fall fair most of it written by Maggie Costello in the Sault Star. I was also at the official opening in the Centennial Museum where it was first housed.

Chapleau Arts and Crafts Fall Fair committee cancels 2020 fair due to COVID-19 Pandemic but plans 2021 return with "Farmer's Market theme CBC Radio personality Leon Mangoff, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Broomhead officially opened the fair which according to Maggie Costello in the Sault Star, "Everything, just everything, conferred a blessing", even the weather on Chapleau, for the weekend.

"Well over 2,000 people, many of them visitors including a couple all the way from Holland, were all over the building, inspecting some 1,000, possibly even more articles on display and for sale."

Maggie noted that among the displays were "lovely hand embroidered linens, Afghans of endless colour and design, paintings in oils and water colour and other media, jewelry, wearables of all kinds for children and adults, novelties for home decorations, hand painted hasty notes pottery and much, much more."

On the lower floor there were displays of family heirlooms as well as hand made quilts and crocheted table covers of intricate design as well as other displays.

Designed by Mr. and Mrs. Broomhead to create community interest, it did not fail, with Maggie writing, "Community interest was all over the place along with a blaze of brilliant colour provided by the displays. It seemed that everyone was in on the act."

At the official opening, Mr. Broomhead welcomed everyone, explained the purpose of the fair, adding he felt it had served its purpose.

He paid special tribute to the loyal and hard working committees and hostesses.

Reeve Terry Way-White extended a welcome on behalf of the municipality and

offered congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Broomhead and their committees who had produced an outstanding event.

As a sidebar to the official fall fair, Maggie shared one of the "highlights and sidelights" which was dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Broomhead Maggie, along with Bud and Tom Welch, owners of the Chapleau Sentinel, and Leon Mangoff and his producer Bob Burt "gathered around the festive board" for a feast. I was there too!

"As a special treat for the southern guests Kay dished up moose meat and northern goose with all the trimmings with turkey for those who may not like game. We all tied into it with gusto and the southerners really went to town."

Bob and Leon attended the annual Hunters Ball at the Royal Canadian Legion hall, then on Saturday attended the fair as well as going on a tour of Chapleau, a flight with Tony Buchan over the area, and before leaving on Sunday had an early breakfast at the home of Ed McCarthy.

In commenting on the fair, Leon described Chapleau as his "favourite" northern town and felt the fair was a great event. He said that Chapleau was fortunate to have citizens like Mr. and Mrs. Broomhead to give something new to the town and engender so much community participation.

All these years later, truer words were never spoken. It has been an amazing success story for Chapleau with plan to return in 2021.

As Canadians are struggling in this pandemic the government is lurching from selfinflicted wounds and looking to re-set their footing in parliament. The events of recent weeks have proven too much for their media handlers to control which may explain some of the desire to begin again but beginning another session of this parliament likely won’t change the channel in the way the government desires. The WE charity scandal that has cost the Prime Minister a star cabinet member, the Finance Minister, will not magically disappear along with Mr. Morneau.

More so, the real needs of the country are not best served by proroguing parliament just as the CERB is set to expire. While Canadians wait for direction and assistance, the government is occupied with their own fortunes.

This is happening as Canadians are dealing with high unemployment and parents are preparing for the school year with more questions than answers. At a time when they deserve a government that is committed to focusing on and working to deliver the help that people across the

wrong. The move is anything but transparent too.

With a planned sitting next week and committees working hard to get answers and solutions for Canadians, now is the wrong time to stop everything in the name of self-interest. Our priority should be on Canadians who have been relying on the CERB and don’t know how they will pay the bills at the end of the month. Add to that workers who will need to depend on EI don't know if they'll be able to get help. Consider the needs of parents and women wanting to go back to work and don't know if they'll have childcare to rely on and they don't know how to send their kids back to school safely. This is not the time to test parliament with a confidence vote.

This leads us to election speculation which will be rampant until the throne speech is voted on.

The question is, why should Canadians be forced to pay the price for the government’s scandals? With so much uncertainty related to the pandemic, people deserve a government that is focussed on helping them, not a Stephen Harper-style tactic and coverup.

That’s why New democrats are focussing on the needs of Canadians who are still struggling and worried about caring for their kids, for their

reason to cause an election, but we will be ready to hold the Liberals' feet to the fire and get them help Canadians and come clean on their scandals.

This is a considered position with good reason – minority parliaments are the best opportunity for us to leverage items that make a real difference in people’s lives. Since the last election, and in previous Liberal and Conservative minority governments, New Democrats have used that leverage to deliver for Canadians. When those governments have taken NDP support for granted and refused to work to deliver for Canadians, we have refused to support them.

A good example is the lead-up to the 2011 election when the media, pundits, and Parliament Hill watchers were all saying that Jack Layton and the NDP had no choice but to vote for Stephen Harper's budget. When the budget came down, it was clear the NDP could not, on principle, vote for it. In that election, Canadians saw that principled stand and put their support in the NDP. That is a lesson the Liberals should not forget. New Democrat support has everything to do with whether or not it helps Canadians. That is our bottom line because Canadians deserve to get the support they need.

Les événements des dernières semaines se sont révélés impossibles à gérer pour ses agents de presse, ce qui explique peut-être en partie ce désir de repartir à neuf. Or, il est peu probable que l’amorce d’une nouvelle session au sein de la même législature ait l’effet désiré par le gouvernement, c’est-à-dire détourner l’attention des scandales l’impliquant. En effet, le scandale de l’organisme UNIS a coûté au premier ministre la perte d’un membre étoile du Cabinet, le ministre des Finances. Or, contrairement à M. Morneau, ce scandale ne disparaîtra pas comme par magie. Qui plus est, proroger le Parlement alors même que la Prestation canadienne d’urgence arrive à échéance n’est pas la meilleure façon de répondre aux véritables besoins du pays. Tandis que les Canadiens attendent qu’on les guide et les aide, le gouvernement se préoccupe de son propre sort.

La prorogation survient alors même que les Canadiens sont aux prises avec un taux de chômage élevé et que les parents s’apprêtent à renvoyer leurs enfants à l’école, si bien que les questions se multiplient, mais demeurent sans réponse.

Maintenant plus que jamais, les Canadiens méritent un gouvernement résolu à tout faire pour les aider.

Malheureusement, ils doivent se contenter d’un gouvernement qui bat en retraite après s’être fait prendre la main dans le sac à faire du copinage.

Il est inacceptable d’interrompre les travaux parlementaires au beau milieu d’une pandémie et d’une crise économique. Sans compter que cette démarche n’a rien de transparent. La Chambre devait tenir une séance la semaine prochaine. Les comités travaillaient sans relâche pour obtenir des réponses et trouver des solutions pour les Canadiens. Ce n’est vraiment pas le moment, pour le gouvernement, de tout arrêter pour protéger ses propres intérêts. Les Canadiens qui comptent toujours sur la Prestation canadienne d’urgence et qui s’inquiètent comment ils paieront les factures à la fin du mois doivent être notre priorité. N’oublions pas que les travailleurs qui devront dépendre de l’assurance-emploi ne savent même pas s’ils pourront obtenir de l’aide.

Songeons aux besoins des parents et des femmes qui envisagent un retour au travail mais qui ignorent s’ils pourront compter sur des services de garde d’enfants et qui ne savent pas comment assurer un retour à l’école sécuritaire pour leurs enfants. Ce n’est pas le moment de mettre le Parlement à l’épreuve au moyen d’un vote de confiance.

Certes, l’éventualité du déclenchement d’élections donnera lieu à d’abondantes

conjectures d’ici la mise aux voix du discours du Trône. La question qui s’impose est la suivante : pourquoi devrait-on forcer les Canadiens à payer le prix pour les scandales du gouvernement? Vu la grande incertitude créée par la pandémie, les Canadiens méritent un gouvernement pour qui la priorité consiste à les aider, et non un gouvernement qui a recours à des tactiques et à des opérations de dissimulation dignes de Stephen Harper.

Voilà pourquoi la priorité des néodémocrates, ce sont les besoins des Canadiens qui ont du mal à joindre les deux bouts et qui s’inquiètent du bien-être de leurs enfants et de leurs parents âgés ou qui craignent de perdre leur logement ou de ne plus pouvoir nourrir leur famille.

Tant et aussi longtemps que nous pourrons continuer de forcer le gouvernement à travailler avec nous pour répondre aux besoins des Canadiens, c’est ce que nous ferons. Nous ne chercherons pas de raison de déclencher des élections. Par contre, nous serons prêts à mettre les libéraux sur la sellette, à faire pression sur eux afin qu’ils aident les Canadiens et à exiger qu’ils dévoilent la vérité à l’égard des scandales dans lesquels ils se sont embourbés.

Ontario Adding 200 New Provincial Police Officers New Hires Will Protect Communities and Support Wellness of Frontline Personnel The Ontario government announced the hiring of an additional 200 Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers. These new recruits will provide OPP frontline officers with the additional resources they need to better protect communities, while safeguarding their mental health and wellbeing.

Details were provided today by Premier Doug Ford, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones, and OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique at OPP General Headquarters in Orillia.

"As we help communities recover from the impacts of COVID-19, it's absolutely critical we give our brave men and women in uniform the tools and resources they need to do their job, stay healthy, and keep us all safe," said Premier Ford.

"That's why our government is putting more boots on the ground to crack down on the criminals who would rob families and individuals of the chance to rebuild their lives during this very difficult period."

"Frontline police officers are always there when our communities need them and we have all witnessed their profound dedication to the public during the COVID-19 outbreak," said Solicitor General Jones. "As we continue to safely and gradually reopen the province and more people go back to work, these new frontline OPP officers will provide much-needed support to our existing

complement of officers and ensure we keep our communities safe."

This recruitment initiative responds to recommendations made by the OPP Independent Review Panel (IRP) in its final report released in March. Established in April 2019 to study the workplace culture at the OPP, the IRP was also tasked with examining how the provincial police address issues of mental health, occupational stress injuries and suicide among its members and with providing a series of recommendations.

The OPP is addressing other recommendations from the panel including changes and enhancements to leadership training and activities to promote a healthy and inclusive workplace, creating a new Healthy Workplace Bureau, and establishing OPP-wide strategies to support members when they return to work after a leave of absence.

"Policing is a service that ensures Ontario's communities remain safe, secure, healthy and prosperous," said Commissioner Carrique. "The addition of 200 frontline officers demonstrates a commitment to the Ontario Provincial Police, the well-being of officers and community safety."

The hiring of 200 new frontline OPP officers builds on Ontario's $2.6 million investment announced in April to hire new OPP

psychologists and other mental health clinicians. It also supports the creation of a new integrated mental health support program launched in March in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police Association (OPPA).

"This announcement aligns with the recommendations highlighted by the Independent Review Panel and further reinforces the government's commitment to support the mental health and well-being of our members," said Rob Jamieson, President of the OPPA. "We would like to thank Premier Doug Ford and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones for their ongoing support and dedication."

Of the IRP’s 66 recommendations, 48 are being implemented and 18 are being explored.

The work of the IRP was informed by insights and experiences shared by current and former OPP members, the OPP Commissioner and member associations, as well as families of members who died by suicide. In addition, the panel received over 5,000 survey responses and 250 email submissions.

The IRP report complements the OPP’s own internal reviews and the recommendations from the Ontario Chief Coroner’s Expert Panel on Police Officer Deaths by Suicide Report.

The lemonade saying is used to inspire a positive attitude to encourage people to flip a negative circumstance upside down and use it as an opportunity for positive growth or improvement.

If ever we needed to make lemonade from life's lemons, it is now while we are navigating our way through the COVID-19 pandemic - truly a monumental challenge for any society.

One very obvious example for such opportunity to make lemonade is addressing issues for long-term-care and the welfare of our seniors. Tragic does not even come close to describing the loss of more than 1,840 precious souls as a result of the pandemic in long-termcare facilities. What makes this an even more bitter pill to swallow is that we have learned that operating under Ford's penny-pinching management policies, not only did Ford underspend his health and long-term care budget by $466 million, but worse, he spent just $218 million in the raging battle against COVID-19 in long-term care homes.

Should we be spending time now on investigating how and why the virus spread out of control? Should we seek to find out who was responsible for the situations that lead to these deaths? Absolutely, yes. But we need a public

OFSC Announces Benefits for Early Permit Buyers Starting September 1st Fee Stability & New Rider Advantage Bonus This Year (Barrie, ON – August 20, 2020) – After booming sales of motorized recreational products across the province, the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is anticipating strong demand for Ontario snowmobile trails this winter. In anticipation of this growth, today the OFSC announced new benefits for Ontario snowmobilers as part of its overall strategy to ensure the health and safety of its members, volunteers, landowners and riders for the coming snowmobile season.

Focused on delivering the best possible trail riding experience across the province, the initiatives announced today encourage snowmobilers to support the OFSC provincial trail system by purchasing their 2021 Seasonal or Classic Trail Permit starting September 1st. This early date is the first time in OFSC’s 53‐year history that snowmobilers can purchase trail permits and permit gift cards before Labour Day. Fee Stability: To keep permits affordable and encourage early buying, snowmobilers will benefit from fee stability. This means that 2021 Seasonal and Classic Trail Permit fees will not increase from last season. Early Bird fe es will remain at $190 (Seasonal) or $150 (Classic).

These early fees are only available online at ofsc.on.ca from September 1st through November 1st, after which permit fees increase.

Under Ontario law, Snowmobile Trail Permits sold by the OFSC under the authority of the Ministry of Transportation are mandatory for recreational snowmobiling on OFSC Prescribed Trails.

“Fee stability is good news for all riders, considering they have the opportunity to ride available trails, anywhere in Ontario throughout the winter,” said OFSC CEO Landon French.

Rider Advantage Bonus: The OFSC is also providing a one‐time “confidence bonus” for snowmobilers who sign up for the Rider Advantage Program at the time of early permit purchase. This OFSC offer is redeemable towards the purchase of a 2022 Seasonal or Classic Trail Permit. Snowmobilers who sign up for Rider Advantage this September, between the 1st & 30th, may qualify for a bonus of $50. For those signing up for Rider Advantage from October 1 to 31, the bonus is $25.

The O F S C will apply the Rider Advantage Confidence Bonus for 2022 Seasonal or Classic Permits should snowmobile trails become closed this season as a result of COVID‐19 health guidelines. For the bonus to apply, such closure would have to occur before February 16, 2021 and continue for the remainder of the season. The appropriate bonus would then be applied to your 2022 Permit account.

The Rider Advantage Confidence Bonus provides reassurance to snowmobilers in these difficult times. But equally important, the

“OFSC member clubs and volunteers will be going to extraordinary lengths to get our trails ready to ride,” Landon French concluded.

“But they can’t do it without help, so we are urging every snowmobiler to support their efforts by purchasing a permit in September or October and benefit from the lowest permit fees and the Rider Advantage Confidence Bonus.”

Free App: In addition to early permit purchasing and benefits, the OFSC is offering snowmobilers access to a free, starter version of the Go Snowmobiling Ontario app. This app provides basic trail information similar to a printed trail guide for your mobile phone, as well as updates throughout the season. Ford's cuts to Service Ontario causing long lines, more risk TORONTO — The NDP critic for Government Services and Consumer Protection, Tom Rakocevic, said the Ford government should end the long lines at Service Ontario outlets by reversing his $4.9-million cut, and mandating that centres offer more hours, including evening and weekend hours, plus designated seniors-only service hours.

The former Liberal government eroded service at Service Ontario outlets starting in 2012 by privatizing outlets, leading to lower staffing levels and wages, and longer lines. Premier Ford

has made things even worse, slashing $4.9 million out of Service Ontario in the 2019-20 budget.

During the pandemic, NDP MPPs have had a steady stream of calls from people worried about painfully long lines, posing challenges to seniors who can’t stand in line for hours, and causing pandemic worries about large numbers of people queueing up.

“People continue to contact my office and the offices of my fellow NDP MPPs, expressing frustration about long waits and crowded line-ups at Service Ontario centres around Ontario,”

Rakocevic said. “During the pandemic, we have heard from seniors that having to wait in a long and crowded line-up makes for a stressful and risky experience.

“Premier Ford needs to reduce his backward cut to Service Ontario and mandate that centres expand their hours, including evening and weekend options, and require policies like special seniors hours so seniors are not left waiting in long, crowded lines to the detriment of their health and safety.”

Returning to classrooms safely and with confidence (NC) No one is certain what this school year will look like. But one thing parents, students and teachers can do is make sure they’re prepared to face any obstacle. Health and Safety will play a large and important role when returning to school this year. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for students for as they return to school: Remember to practice good hygiene: Now is a perfect time to stress good hand-washing skills. At home, remind little ones to practice handwashing for at least 20 seconds each time. They can sing happy birthday or another song verse that lasts 20 seconds to make it fun and memorable. While it may be difficult to teach kids not to touch their face, consistent reminders are a good way to help them remember as best they can. When they’re back in the classroom, they’ll take these lessons with them.

Physically distance when possible: Teaching kids that they have to stand two metres apart from each other is difficult, especially when they have friends they haven’t seen in months.

Explaining that everyone is keeping

their distance to keep their friends and families safe is key to helping young kids understand. Give them an example to visualize what two metres looks like, like a hockey stick or the height of a door. This way, when they return to classrooms, they’ll understand the guideline.

Be equipped with the right supplies: Students will need many unexpected essentials on their back-toschool list this year. In addition to a new backpack and pencil case, facemasks, hand sanitizers and cleaning supplies will also be on the shopping list. Make facemask shopping fun by choosing a trendy design that kids will be excited to sport. Equip them with multiple hand sanitizers so when one gets lost, they have quick access to another. Banana-Berry Smoothie Bowl Prep time: 5 minutes Serves: 1 Ingredients: 1 cup Fairlife 2% ultrafiltered, partly skimmed milk ½ cup frozen blueberries ½ cup frozen raspberries 1 frozen banana (frozen in chunks for

easier blending) 2 tbsp ground flax seeds ½ tsp vanilla Topping suggestions: sliced bananas, extra berries (fresh or frozen), chia seeds, hemp hearts, granola, nuts.

Directions: Add all ingredients (except toppings) to a blender and process until smooth.

Garnish as desired and serve immediately.

Tip: Fresh fruit can be used if frozen is unavailable. Add ice to achieve desired thickness.
