Chapleau Resident Celebrates 101st Birthday

O

n August 21st, 2021, family and friends gathered at the Bignucolo Residence to celebrate a milestone event. Mrs. Beatrice Morin, a lifelong resident of Chapleau, turned 101 years old.

The theme for this birthday party was the “101 Dalmatians” including a well decorated cake. Mrs. Morin even agreed to dress up as Cruella de Vil, the character in the Disney movie.

Four generations were represented at the gathering.

In all likelihood, Mrs. Morin is the oldest living citizen of Chapleau.

Beatrice and her twin sister Lilian were affectionately known in town as the “Twins”. They operated a local beauty salon for years. Lilian passed away in 2014 at the age of 94.

Hospital Foundation hosts successful 9th Golf Classic

76 golfers participated in this year's event | 76 golfeurs ont participé à l'événement de cette année.

The Chapleau General Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce that we raised approximatey $15,600 at our 9th Golf Classic, h e l d o n S a t u r d a y, A u g u s t 1 4 , 2 0 2 1 a t Kebsquasheshing Golf Club in Chapleau.

The Foundation's signature event brought out 76 players for a fun day of golf, socialising, prizes and awards. The occasion also marked one of the first larger gatherings in Chapleau since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The winning team was Collins Home Hardware Matheson (Doug Collins, Doug Prusky, J.C Cyr, and Jim Morin) with a final score of 57.

This year we held our classic Ball Toss contest with a twist and Rosie Cloutier walked away with a travel certificate for 7 nights of accommodations for two people to one of hundreds of resorts around the world, sponsored

by Chapleau Auto Parts.

We awarded the Best Team Name trophy to The Fore Horsemen (Michael Tremblay, Paul Jacques, Joel Couture, and Stéphane Desjardins).

The Diggers (Amberly Quakagesic,

Andrew Orton, Renae Vanbuskirk, and Erica Vanbuskirk) took home the Early Bird prize of four tickets to the Rotary Club of Chapleau's next Pike Ice Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chapleau.

Collins Home Hardware and Anthony Pucci – RBC Wealth Management sponsored our hole-in-one prizes at $5,000 and $10,000 respectively. Unfortunately, no one took home the cash prizes, but there is always next time!

Michael J. Morris For some reason during the heat wave that has enveloped Cranbrook where I have lived for the past 32 years, I have been reflecting on Chapleau nicknames. Way back, when I first started Chapleau Moments in 2009 I did write about nicknames --- there was a time before mine, when everyone had a nickname!

I have also had several nicknames, the most popular being "Chief" or the "the Chief said" and will start by sharing how I got it. In 1970, the Chapleau Midgets led by Jamie Doyle told me they had fired their coach and hired me. I told them I would come to a practice, I took the job.

Anyway early on, the late Keith McAdam called me MJ at practice and I lost my temper advising the team that to them I was "Mr. Morris" ... It hadn't taken me long after starting to teach at Chapleau High School to become a "Mr." I stormed out of the dressing room in the old Chapleau Memorial Arena, lit a cigarette and

Reflections on Chapleau nicknames during the heat wave brings back fond memories with a nod to Cervantes listened to the conversation. In due course the late Lionel Corston, an indigenous person, piped up: "He is the Chief and we are the Indians." By the way I quit smoking in 2004.

Immediately the players responded positively. I would be the "Chief" and led by Jamie they came out of the dressing room, marching by me to the ice surface, each one saying "Hi Chief". It stuck and I will never forget the look of victory on the faces of these 15-16 year old hockey players. They had won a big one!!!

They sure had because to this day, some 50 years later, on Facebook, some still call me "Chief". I will see how many do at the 100th anniversary of Chapleau High School in 2022!!!!

When I first wrote about nicknames, I started with two of my great friends -- Harry "Butch' Pellow and Harry "Boo" Hong.

I started with "Boo" and "Butch" simply because they are of my generation of Butch and Boo Chapleauites. It was my parents' generation that really had some fascinating nicknames, and I will share just a few with you starting with ""Jiggs and "Gussie". In those days men generally signed their name using their

La 9e Classique de golf de la Fondation de l'Hôpital a connu un grand succès La Fondation de l'Hôpital général de Chapleau est heureuse d'annoncer que nous avons amassé un total de 15 600 $ lors de notre 9e Classique de golf, qui a eu lieu le samedi 14 août 2021 au club de golf Kebsquasheshing à Chapleau.

Prix et récompenses ont été remis lors de l'événement phare de la Fondation qui a permis à 76 joueurs de passer une agréable journée de golf et de socialiser. Cette activité a aussi marqué l'un des premiers plus grands rassemblements à Chapleau depuis le début de la pandémie de COVID 19.

L'équipe gagnante de Collins Home Hardware Matheson (Doug Collins, Doug Prusky, J.C Cyr et Jim Morin) a terminé la partie avec un score de 57.

Cette année, nous avons organisé notre concours classique de lancer de balle avec une touche de nouveauté. Rosie Cloutier est repartie avec un certificat de voyage pour sept nuits d'hébergement pour deux personnes dans l'une des centaines de centres de villégiature autour du monde (commandité par Chapleau Auto Parts).

Nous avons remis le trophée du meilleur nom d'équipe à The Fore Horsemen (Micheal Tremblay, Paul Jacques, Joel Couture et Stéphane Desjardins).

Our small business community is tired and worn down to their socks. They are on pins and needles, having to watch from the dugout for so long during the lockdowns. Anything less will lead to chaos and abject failure.

Another egregious example of Ford's halfmeasures concerns mandatory vaccination of health care workers and educators. Teachers, educational staff, PSWs, nurses and so on work with some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Our young children are not even able to receive the vaccine until they are 12 years old. Some health care and PSWs are working with the elderly, frail and those who have compromised immune systems as well as some who actually may be infected. The workers, their families, students and patients all deserve to be as protected as possible to prevent the spread of the virus. Initially, Ford adamantly refused to even consider implementing mandatory vaccination for such workers. However, after facing immense backlash from many sides, Ford did agree to a very watered down half-measure of vaccination policy.

He agreed that such workers have to be vaccinated….or… they can refuse and be subjected to frequent testing and required to take an online tutorial or some form of seminar on why vaccination is the best way to protect everyone.

But in the end, Ford's mandatory vaccination is, again, only a watered down, half measure – and a dangerous one at that.

Doug Ford's half measures show he's catering to anti-vaccine sentiments within his party and supporters. He is more worried about losing their support than he is about the health and welfare of average Ontarians. He still doesn't want to spend on COVID-fighting measures.

Even Ontario's Financial Accountability Officer says that Ford withheld more than $10 billion last year that was earmarked for pandemic fighting.

It' late in the game. Ontarians are weary, fed up and fearful for the future of their family, friends and loved ones. People know that they government leader who is going to give a full wheelhouse swing to bring it home and shut out lockdowns for good.
