irst day of school is fast approaching and Algoma District School Board (ADSB) is excited to welcome our students back. We know that students will have many different feelings about the return to class on the first day.

Which is why we have decided to kick off the school year with our first ever ADSB Show Up Event: IGNITE 2021.

In an exciting virtual event for all ADSB students on Monday, August 23, IGNITE 2021 kicks off with performances, and words of encouragement specifically for our students from celebrity VIP's including our host Jessie Cruickshank, Andre De Grasse, Tyler Shaw, and Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser.

Jessi Cruickshank is a former co-host of MTV Canada. Most recently, she has enjoyed national fame as the co-host of CBC's The Goods and as the host of Canada's Smartest Person. She has been to Algoma District in the past to host #yoothesoo.

Andre De Grasse is an Olympic Champion Sprinter and Six-Time Olympic Medalist. Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser is considered one of the best female hockey players in the world. Seven world championships, six Olympic appearances, five Olympic medals, named one of Sports Illustrated's Top 25 Toughest Athletes in the World. She is a titan of sport and a leader both on and off the ice.

These special guests all started somewhere. We want our students to be reminded: it's not about winning, or placing or competing. It's not about chart topping singles and sell out concerts. And for a student starting off the school year, it's not about acing a test or being president of a club or being selected for their school team. It is really about SHOWING UP. Taking a shot. Taking a chance. Believing in themselves to take that very first step.

For our Grade 6-10 students, there's even more – an in person special event at each ADSB secondary school location across our district, immediately following the IGNITE 2021 virtual event. This will be a carnival-type format with outdoor and indoor stations where students can pick and engage in activities that interest them.

There will be caring adults and student leaders there to help direct participants to events or to explain them. Students may try something new or out of their comfort zone. Or maybe not. We want students to SHOW UP and enjoy the day. In addition to the celebrity VIPs and the carnival style events, this afternoon event will include music, food (snacks and lunch), free transportation, T-shirts and give aways. All of this at all ADSB high schools throughout the district from 11:15am on!

The IGNITE 2021 event has been designed with students in mind. We're asking participants to think about what the year ahead could be like. How will they connect? How will they use their voice? What chances will they take? How will they show up to ignite their school year?

All ADSB students/parents should check their phone messages, email and Edsby for more information about linking into the Virtual Performance on August 23 beginning at 10am!

Canada and Ontario Invest More Than $1.6 million in Municipal Infrastructure to Respond to the Impacts of COVID-19 The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing more than $1.6 million to protect the health and well-being of residents in six communities across Ontario.

The Government of Canada is investing over $1.2 million in Ontario communities through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Ontario is contributing more than $323,000.

Investments in the City of Peterborough will upgrade the HVAC system at the Sports and Wellness Centre by replacing the dehumidification unit. These improvements will provide better ventilation throughout the facility for clients and staff to enjoy year-round.

The remainder of funding will support the rehabilitation of the shoreline in the Town of Goderich by installing a retaining wall to provide better protection against shoreline erosion along Lake Huron; high-speed broadband internet will be installed in the municipal office in the Municipality of Morris-Turnberry for the benefit of staff and visitors; the town soccer clubhouse will undergo repairs in the City of Thorold; and

upgrades will be made to the municipal office, firehall and library in the Village of Newberry.

Furthermore, funding will support new sidewalks and a new crosswalk on Inglis Street in the Township of North Dumfries.

The COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream, implemented in response to the pandemic, allows the Government of Canada to invest up to 80 per cent of eligible costs for projects in provinces, and up to 100 per cent for projects in territories and Indigenous communities. The Province of Ontario will invest 20 per cent of the eligible costs for projects across the province. · Through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan, the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities. · The Government of Canada has invested over $14.4 billion in more than 3,900 infrastructure projects across Ontario under the Investing in Canada plan.

Père bien-aimé d'Yves (Jessica) et de Melissa (Éric). Pépère de Colten, Olivia, Paige, Zoé, Naomi et Tayze.

Cher frère de Laura (James), Rose, Lynn (Simon), et Robert (Jennifer).

Ron est accueilli au paradis par ses parents Marcellin et Annette. Ron manquera beaucoup à ses nombreux neveux, nièces, tantes, oncles, cousins et cousines, ainsi qu'aux nombreux amis qu'il s'est fait au fil des ans à Chapleau.

Des dons commémoratifs faits à la mémoire de Ron à la Société canadienne du cancer seraient grandement appréciés par sa famille.

Chapleau Premier William Davis visited Chapleau in 1975 to launch Ontario provincial election Moments by

Morris When William G "Bill" Davis, who was the second longest serving premier of Ontario from 1971 to 1985, died at age 92 on August 8, 2021, it brought back a flood of memories of my connection to him as university newspaper editor, as an editor at the Brampton Times and Conservator and as reeve of Chapleau.

When I was editor of the Cord the student newspaper at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier University), in the early 1960s, Mr. Davis was Ontario's education minister and was awarded an honorary degree by the university. It bothered me for the longest time that I ran the Davis story as the headliner on page one, instead of something more radical in keeping with the sixties. But I was a good Progressive Conservative in those days, so I went with it.

As education minister from 1962 to 1971, perhaps his most lasting legacy was to establish community colleges in Ontario, a first in North America, a move that was much criticized. In fact I worked with teachers and a principal who had no use for community colleges and would never

When pandemic programs were in their early stages, the overarching message relayed to Canadians who found themselves out of work was that they should apply for the CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) to offset lost wages.

Among those who applied for the benefit, and its subsequent replacement CRB (Canada Recovery Benefit), were seniors who had held down some form of employment in addition receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) before Covid ground most work to a halt. Now, many of these seniors are finding they either face drastic deductions or no longer qualify for the benefit.

Worse, there was no prior warning and individuals are only learning about the problem by discovering the GIS is no longer being deposited in their accounts, leaving them with an uncertain future.

This is due to a unique circumstance the benefit created since it paid significantly more than

Canada, a path to GIS is available while those who accessed benefits through the Canada Revenue Agency are facing the harshest outcomes. It's difficult to believe that these problems were anticipated in the early stages of the pandemic, however, the government is not responding to the emerging concerns as seniors learn their GIS benefit will be partially, or completely, cut leaving them with little to survive on.

One reason the problems these individuals face are difficult to accept is that many advocates, including federal New Democrats, spent the better part of the last year fighting so that all seniors would receive additional financial support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government chose to fold working seniors into their program aimed at younger workers and now we have this problem.

It's difficult to accept when contrasted against the way the government rushed to give money to the richest corporations without any strings attached.

And while they always seem to nickel and dime the little guy, knowing that doesn't make it fair.

There shouldn't be different outcomes for

the table because of this undisclosed rule the government is choosing to enforce. What's needed is a prompt solution and for the federal government to change its approach to slashing the guaranteed income supplement based on these specific benefits. Instead, they are applying ordinary formulas to extraordinary circumstances without even acknowledging the pain it will cause.

New Democrats are calling on the government to fix this problem before seniors start to face evictions. Currently, GIS eligible seniors who lose the benefit have few options available to them. MPs are hearing from seniors who have no idea how they will cope with the loss of crucial income support. We already knew that too many seniors were struggling to get by before the pandemic, there's no good reason for an emergency benefit to put more of them at risk, but that is what is happening. It's imperative for the government to both acknowledge the situation and ensure that GIS dependent seniors don't become victims of programs that were only intended to provide assistance through extraordinary times

C'est d'autant plus frustrant quand on pense à l'empressement qu'a mis le gouvernement à donner de l'argent aux sociétés les plus riches sans aucune condition. Et même s'il semble toujours s'acharner sur les petits, cela ne rend pas les choses plus justes pour autant.

Il ne devrait pas y avoir de résultats différents pour les personnes âgées en fonction de la façon dont elles ont demandé la prestation spéciale, mais c'est pourtant ce qui s'est produit. Il faut y remédier. Les personnes âgées, qui ont été durement touchées par cette pandémie, luttent maintenant pour payer leur loyer, leurs factures et leur épicerie à cause de cette règle non divulguée que le gouvernement choisit d'appliquer. Ce qu'il faut, c'est une solution rapide et que le gouvernement fédéral change son approche pour ce qui est de réduire le SRG en fonction des prestations spéciales. Au lieu de cela, il applique des formules ordinaires à des circonstances extraordinaires sans même reconnaître la douleur que tout cela va engendrer.

Il faut régler ce problème avant que les aînés commencent à se faire expulser de leur logement. Actuellement, les aînés admissibles au SRG qui perdent la prestation ont peu d'options.

savent pas du tout comment ils pourront survivre à la perte d'un soutien au revenu si crucial. Nous savions déjà que trop de personnes âgées avaient du mal à s'en sortir avant la pandémie; faut-il en plus qu'une prestation d'urgence les précarise davantage? Il est impératif que le gouvernement reconnaisse la situation et s'assure que les personnes âgées qui dépendent du SRG ne deviennent pas les victimes de programmes qui n'étaient destinés qu'à fournir de l'aide en période extraordinaire.

Il faut remédier aux problèmes involontaires découlant des prestations de la pandémie Au début des programmes d'aide relatifs à la pandémie, on disait aux Canadiens qui se retrouvaient sans emploi de demander la Prestation canadienne d'urgence (PCU) pour compenser leurs pertes de salaire. Parmi les personnes qui ont demandé cette prestation et sa remplaçante, la Prestation canadienne de la relance économique (PCRE), se trouvaient des aînés qui avaient occupé une certaine forme d'emploi en plus de recevoir le Supplément de revenu garanti (SRG) avant que la COVID-19 ne paralyse le monde du travail.

Aujourd'hui, bon nombre de ces personnes âgées découvrent que leurs prestations sont fortement amputées ou qu'elles n'y ont plus droit. Le pire, c'est que personne ne les a averties et qu'elles ont découvert le problème en voyant que leur SRG n'était plus déposé sur leur compte, ce qui les accablent d'une cruelle incertitude quant à leur avenir.

Ce problème découle de la circonstance sans pareille que la prestation a créée, puisqu'elle était beaucoup plus généreuse que ce que les travailleurs rapportaient à la maison tout en demeurant admissibles au SRG. À cela s'ajoute la confusion liée à la manière dont les personnes ont accédé à la PCU et à la PCRE. Ceux qui l'ont demandée par l'entremise de Service Canada peuvent accéder un processus de remédiation pour la SRG, tandis que ceux qui sont passés par l'Agence du revenu du Canada se retrouvent fortement désavantagés. Il est difficile de croire qu'on avait pressenti ces problèmes dès les premiers stades de la pandémie, mais le gouvernement ne répond pas aux préoccupations que vivent les personnes âgées en apprenant que leur SRG sera partiellement, voire totalement, réduit, ce qui leur laisse peu de moyens pour subvenir à leurs besoins.

ETFO members call for mandatory vaccination of school staff At today's Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) 2021 Annual Meeting, delegates voted in favour of a policy statement calling on the Ford government to ensure appropriate measures are in place for a safe return to school, including the mandatory vaccination of school staff, with provisions for exceptions. Transparent processes must be established, in consultation with unions, to determine how the vaccination requirement could be implemented fairly within the education sector.

“The province's voluntary disclosure policy does not go far enough to protect students and school staff. Given the severity and longevity of the global pandemic, it is not unreasonable for the Ford government to implement a mandatory vaccination policy in schools,” says ETFO President Sam Hammond. “Considering the increased risks the Delta variant poses to those who are unvaccinated, including children under 12, and with a concerning rise in the number of COVID-19 cases across Ontario, we must do everything we can to ensure the health and safety of all Ontarians; this includes mandating vaccines

for all staff working in schools, with exceptions.”

Vaccines have become an important tool in curbing the pandemic, and in preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death. In a survey of ETFO members in June 2021, over 90 per cent indicated that they had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of June and 75 per cent indicated that they were already scheduled for a second dose of COVID19 vaccine before September 2021. We anticipate these numbers have increased significantly over the summer.

“Students, educators and other education workers are being sent back to unsafe schools because the Ford government has consistently failed to make the investments necessary to ensure a safe and sustainable reopening. In the absence of adequate protocols that will effectively mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in schools, mandating vaccination can help protect the safety of both staff and students,” adds Hammond.

Educators want schools to remain open, safely, throughout the year, but we cannot rely on Ford's current incomplete and inadequate plan to

ensure this happens. ETFO is calling on the province to implement the following to ensure appropriate measures are in place for a safe, sustainable 2021-2022 school year: ! lower class sizes to enable physical distancing; ! maintain cohorting that limits interactions; ! improve classroom/work site air exchange/ventilation; ! mandate masking for all elementary students, including Kindergarten, unless medically exempted; ! require confirmation of COVID-19 screening of staff and students; ! provide on-site testing; ! direct adequate safeguards for student transportation; and ! mandate COVID-19 vaccination for school staff, with provisions for exceptions.

Fatal ATV crash under investigation near Chapleau A news release issued today by the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reports that an 86-yearold was pronounced deceased at the scene of an ATV crash near Chapleau yesterday.

Officers responded to the single vehicle collision in the area of Nagasin Lake at approximately 5:15 p.m.
