InanAug.8newsrelease, OFIA president-CEO Ian Dunn said the softwood lumberdisputemustremain a “top priority” in Ottawa’s trade discussions with the U.S.
“Ontario’s forest sector depends on international trade, exporting approximately$7.9billionworthof goodsperyear,”saidDunn.
Provincial and federal measures, such as offering loan guarantees, will “provide liquidity to impactedcompanies,”Dunnsaid, aswillgovernmentprocurementpoliciestousemoredomestically produced building materials in infrastructureandhomebuildingprojects.
OFIAsaidAmericanconsumerswillfeel the pain from U.S. duties on Ontario forest products.
He cited a recent Canadian Chamber of Commerce report that tariffs and duties on construction materials imported in the U.S., between 2018 and 2014, have added up to US$6,000tocostofasinglefamilyhomeinthe states. That cost should climb another $14,000 bytheendof2027,ifthecurrentmeasuresstayin place.
Others are condemning Washington’s actions.
The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) said the escalation to 35.19percentis“deeplyunfairandunjustified” and threatens the economic stability of forest mill-dependentcommunities.
Association president and Marathon mayorRickDumasrespondedthattheCanadian and U.S. governments must resolve this “decades-long”tradedispute.
“Our communities need certainty, fairness,andadurable,rules-basedsolutionthat supports rural and Indigenous economies and keepslumberaffordableforall.”
NOMA’s northeastern Ontario counterparts, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities, said the duty hike will deliver a “seriousblow”totheregion’sforestrysectorthat puts jobs, local businesses, and communities at risk.
“This latest tariff hike is both unfair and economically destructive,” said FONOM PresidentDannyWhaleninastatement.
“NorthernOntario’sforestryworkersand communities will be hit hard, while American familieswillpay.”
FONOM applauded federal and provincial aid to the embattled industry, but adds that short-termfixesisnotenough.
“It’s time for the Canadian and U.S. governmentstostopplayingpoliticsandnegotiate a fair, long-term, rules-based agreement that safeguards rural and Indigenous economies and keepslumberaffordableforall,”saidWhalen.
Today, Kevin Holland, Associate Minister of Forestry and Forest Products; Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources; and Vic Fedeli,MinisterofEconomicDevelopment,Job Creation and Trade, issued the following statement in response to the latest U.S. decision onsoftwoodlumberduties.
“We recently called on the United States toupholditscommitmenttofreeandfairtradeby lifting duties on Canadian softwood lumber exportsaftertheU.S.DepartmentofCommerce's decision to increase duties on softwood lumber. Today, the U.S. Department of Commercehasdecidedtofurtherincreaseduties on Canadian softwood lumber. Have you ever heard of polyculture farming?
This innovative practice involves growing a variety of crops together in the same space, mimickingthenaturaldiversityfoundinecosystems.
Unlike monoculture farming, which focusessolelyonmaximizingyield, polyculture prioritizesecologicalhealthandbalance. Here’s anoverview.
One of the main advantages of polyculture is its abilitytoenhancebiodiversity.
By planting a mix of different crops, farmers create a vibrant ecosystem that attracts beneficial insects and wildlife. This natural balance helps deter specific pests, as they often prefercertainhostplants.
Polyculture also promotes better soil health. Many polyculture systems include perennial crops with deeprootsthat help stabilize soil structure, prevent erosion and improve waterretention.
Each crop has unique nutrient needs, and rotating various plants helps the soil recover resources and maintain fertility.Forexample, legumes like soybeans support a soilenriching process called nitrogen-fixation, converting thisvitalgasintoausableform essentialtoplantgrowth.
Polyculture supports sustainable farming practices thatnotonlyfocusonproducing food but also prioritize caringfortheenvironmentand mitigating the effects of climatechange.
Farmers who practice polyculture can adapt more effectively to climate challenges and pest pressures while providing diverse food optionsfortheircommunities. Findoutaboutfarmerspracticing polyculture where you live.
