Staff members deserve the respect we always expect for ourselves! Any Council must recognize the simple fact that it is only as good as the staff it leads. Council and staff have an obligation to do the best for those who pay them and, for that reason, the best approach is for Council and staff to work as a team. than 5.5 million people in Canada face every day. Fortunately, there are many ways to help those of all ages living with arthritis. Here are a few ideas: Take advantage of tools Simple tools can make everyday tasks easy to master. Everyone’s level of ability is different, but people living with arthritis may consider using assistive devices to help with everyday activities. Learn new techniques Aside from tools and technology, there can be simple shifts to how something gets done that make it more possible. Based on your needs, a health professional can work with you to develop new ways to perform activities that are important to
you. Ask an expert People living with arthritis want to be able to do the things they need or want to do with confidence. To help make that happen, work with an occupational therapist. Known as OTs, occupational therapists are licensed health professionals who help people affected by injuries and various conditions. They are skilled in working with you to develop strategies and adaptations to perform everyday tasks and achieve your goals. You can find an OT through the College of Occupational Therapists. The College protects you and your family by ensuring all licensed occupational therapists in Ontario are trained and qualified to offer safe, competent and ethical services. 5 tips for gardening with sore joints (NC) The days are getting longer, the temperature is getting warmer, and many of us are itching to get our hands dirty in the garden again. Whether you choose to grow colourful blooms or nutritious veggies, gardening can be great for your mind and body. But, if you have arthritis, it can also be hard on your joints. “There are many benefits that come with gardening, but it’s important to remember to avoid pushing yourself too much,” says Trish Barbato, president and CEO of the Arthritis Society. Here are some tips she shares. Start low and go slow. Gradually increase the amount of time you’re active and the effort you make while gardening. Schedule tasks like weeding, mulching or pruning over several days to avoid overexerting yourself. Use the right tools. Tools with larger grips or extended handles can make many tasks easier for those with arthritis. Use a seat or kneeling pads to avoid putting stress on your knees. Bring the garden to you. If working at low levels is difficult for your joints, consider raised planters or an elevated
container garden. Build in breaks. Set an alarm at least every hour to take a 10-minute pause. This will help you avoid stiffness and pain the next day. Avoid the heavy lifting. Carry smaller loads, or better yet, delegate more challenging tasks to family and friends. Find more information and resources to help you garden at arthritis.ca.

How to avoid spring cleaning stress
(NC) Many of us dread the pressure to do a major clean of your home at this time of year. Although it’s a great way to boost your confidence and gain pride in your space, it can feel like a lot to take on. In fact, according to a recent survey commissioned by Libman, a quarter of all respondents admitted that spring cleaning overwhelms them. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to make cleaning less distressing. Plan your attack
It doesn’t matter where you start or end your spring cleaning so long as you create a rough plan before you begin. That way it’s easier to stay on task and avoid getting overwhelmed since you know what you’ve done and where you’ll clean next. Be realistic about the time you need for each task, and don’t be afraid to schedule some of the larger ones across separate days. This will give you more breathing room, so you’re not stressed out trying to complete an impossible list in one go. Get ready to compete Whatever you can do to up the fun when it comes to cleaning is fair game. It could be as elaborate as a family wide competition for the most streakfree windows cleaned or as simple as putting on your favourite tunes. Keeping your mood up and your pace moving will take your mind off how much more you still need to accomplish, and it will help you finish faster. Reject perfection Hailed as a time to refresh and reset, spring cleaning sometimes feels like the one chance to get your home in order for the rest of the year. But if that feeling leaves you overwhelmed, remember that any cleaning you get done is better than not cleaning at all; it doesn’t have to be done perfectly. Assemble your tools Having the right tools on hand helps
ensure you’ll get the job done with confidence. So, do an inventory of your supplies and stock up before you begin. Look for environmentally sustainable tools that are built with ergonomics and efficiency in mind. For a big undertaking like window cleaning, opt for an extendable tool like Libman’s Telescopic Window Washer, which extends 8 feet and has a flexible rubber blade to wipe streak-free as well as a strong net-covered sponge to loosen dirt and film.

The Year of the Garden is worth celebrating (NC) While each spring we celebrate the return of gardening season, this year’s celebrations may be extra special. The Canadian Garden Council and Communities in Bloom are inviting individual gardeners and municipalities to celebrate gardening in Canada. Whether you are a long-time gardener, or just took up the pastime during the pandemic, the Year of the Garden is a great opportunity to grow your interest and your skills. Gardens and gardening come with a wide array of benefits. Creating more urban green spaces has long-term sustainability benefits. For example, plants and gardens produce oxygen, sequester carbon, and mitigate the heat island effect in urban areas. Gardening also has individual health benefits for gardeners and broader societal health benefits by creating spaces for us all to
enjoy active living. Gardens and gardening also create important economic benefits, including attracting residents and visitors to communities across the country. But growing healthy lawns, flowers and vegetables can be challenging. Just as farmers must overcome threats from insects, weeds and diseases to grow safe and healthy food for Canadians, gardeners face similar challenges. Careful planning and management are important to success. When pest challenges threaten your lawn or garden, there are pest control tools available that are safe, effective and specifically designed for homeowners’ use. Let’s all celebrate The Year of the Garden and the many benefits that gardens bring to our communities.
Vegetable gardening 101 (NC) If you’ve been inspired to try growing your own vegetable garden during the pandemic, here are three steps to follow to get your best harvest. Plan • Choose a spot with plenty of sunlight. • Make sure you have easy access to water. • Map your garden. Plant tall crops like corn north or west of short crops. • Plan to use companion planting, such as marigolds, in your veggie garden to naturally deter bugs.
Vehicle Decals Safety Signage Posters 705-864-4376 jnsigns@gmail.com
Plant • Start your seeds for tomatoes, peppers and broccoli early indoors. • Wait until after the last spring frost to start planting outdoors. • Check with your garden supply retailer for highquality seeds and plants. • Plant in straight rows to make cultivating, harvesting and insect control easier. • Feed your soil with the right balance of nutrients using a good quality fertilizer. • Water plants regularly, especially in the early stages. Protect • Monitor your plants often for signs of pests and disease. (Tip: remove the bottom third of leaves on tomatoes to help prevent mold and rot.) • Remove weeds and insect-ravaged plants. • Encourage beneficial insects in your garden. • If a pest problem persists, apply a pest control product following the instructions on the label. Pesticides available in stores have been approved by Heath Canada as safe for people, pets and the environment.
