U15 Chapleau Huskies Win NOHA “A” Division Tournament of Champions and Qualify for All-Ontario's!

By: Gwen McKnight hen the Chapleau Huskies travelled to Kapuskasing for the A Division Tournament of Champions the expectations were high. Coming off an undefeated regular season every team in the tournament knew the Huskies were the team to beat, and a trip to the Ontario Provincial Championships was on the line.

The Huskies started pool play with a matchup against the Sudbury Timberwolves.

Four unanswered goals in the first period by Jordan Martineau, Jack Cyr, Jake Sanchioni and Cole Ellis gave the Huskies a strong start. During the second period Fynn Manttari and Kyston Stevens added two more to the tally before Sudbury scored with 5 minutes left in the period.

Another scoring run in the third with goals by Sienna Lortie, Jake Sanchioni and two more by Captain Cole Ellis for a hat trick brought the Huskies total to 10, with the Timberwolves scoring a second late in the third period.

The Huskies were feeling good going into their second game against the West Nippising Sting, but with only one goal in the first period by Cole Ellis assisted by Braeden Bernath they knew they needed more. Mark Raposo scored for the Huskies early in the second period, but the Long Term Sting were able to claw Forecast their way back with two Thursday High 5 goals in the latter part of Low -3 the second period to leave the game tied Friday High 0 going to intermission.

by Cole Ellis for his second hat trick of the tournament, two off the stick of Kyston Stevens assisted by Sienna Lortie and Camden Arsenault and one by Jordan Martineau for a final of 8-2.

The Hearst/Kap Regional Express were the next opponents the Huskies faced in round robin play and early goals by defenseman Fynn Manttari and Cole Ellis helped set the tone with Stevens and Martineau adding two more to cap the first period at 4-0 Huskies. Even with the Regionals scoring two in the second period the Huskies stuck to their game plan and the goals kept coming, with two by Jake Sanchioni and another by Ellis to bring the game to a close 7-2.

In the final game of the round robin the Huskies faced the North Bay Trappers whom they defeated in the finals of the Nickel City Tournament. The Huskies started the game with an excellent first period, with three unanswered goals scored by Jake Sanchioni, Jordan

Martineau and Fynn Manttari. North Bay held Chapleau scoreless in the second and tallied up three goals themselves, so the game was tied going into the third period with first place in the pool up for grabs. Captain Cole Ellis scored at 12:28 of the third period, assisted by Parker Baronette-Moore but the Trappers tied the game up with 8 minutes left and neither team was able to break the tie before the final buzzer.

Semi-final play started the following morning, the Huskies, having finished in first place in their pool played the fourth-place team, The West Nippising Sting. Goalie Brett Andre had his first shutout of the tournament as Cole Ellis had his second four-goal game of the tournament with assists by Jack Cyr, Jack Carter, and Braeden Bernath. Mark Raposo, Jordan Martineau, Fynn Manttari and Kyston Stevens added to the Huskies game sheet totals for a convincing win over the Sting 8-0 setting the stage for the Championship Final against D&L

Cont’d on P.9 OBITUARY CORSTON, Barry Aubrey July 5, 1947 – March 14, 2022 Passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Monday, March 14th, 2022, in his 75th year, at his home in Toronto. Predeceased by his parents Albert and Mildred (nee Bain). Beloved father of BarbaraAnn(Donald). Dearest grandfather to Nathan.

Missed by many cousins and countless friends.

Barry was born in Chapleau, Ontario and was raised there until moving to Toronto with his parents in his teens. Barry was a graphic design artist by trade with much of his career in Toronto and GTA, creating marketing and advertising campaigns for many companies.

Barry also worked for the government of Northwest Territories for a number of years before returning to Toronto. A member of Chapleau Cree First Nation, one of the highlights of Barry's career was the design of the official logo for his First Nation, in the early 80's. Following his retirement he volunteered his time supporting individuals with special needs as well as seniors with the Meals on Wheels program. Barry was a huge sports fan.

He enjoyed playing hockey, golf, billiards and darts. Barry will be remembered for his love of family, generosity with his time, and being the life of any party.

Per his wishes, Barry was cremated in Toronto and will return to rest with his parents in Chapleau. A Celebration of Life and burial will take place July 2022.

Michael J. Morris Happy Easter in 2022 with a look back to 1979 when the Chapleau Midget Huskies won the Northern Ontario Hockey Association Midget "C" championship winning the best of three series in two thrilling straight games.

And as there was no Midget "C" category in southern Ontario, it gave the team bragging rights as the all-Ontario champions.

The Midget Huskies defeated Blind River for the championship. All games were played in Blind River.

Playing on Easter weekend, it didn't look good for the Huskies in the first game as they fell behind Blind River 4-0 early in the first period, but David Freeborn followed by Yves Gervais put them on the scoreboard.

The Chapleau Sentinel account of the games relates that in the second period "hot

A determined effort in the third led to the game ending in a 6-6 tie with John Bernier and Geoffrey Hong both scoring In the first overtime period despite "thrilling action at both ends as both teams tried desperately to end the game" they remained deadlocked.

At the 11:36 mark of the sudden death overtime, Randy Carroll notched the winner.

In the second game, the Huskies took the lead in the first period on a goal by Gary Chambers but Blind River tied it up shortly thereafter. In the second their opponents took the lead, but David Freeborn got the equalizer.

In the first two periods the game was "free wheeling with great chances by both teams."

However, disaster seemed to strike in the third period as the Huskies had fallen behind by three goals.

But this team was no quitter. Trust me on this one as I was standing right behind the bench, and was as excited as I have ever been at a hockey game. What happened next counts among my great Chapleau hockey moments.

John Bernier scored to begin the comeback and nine minutes later Yves Gervais

narrowed the margin to one goal. Shane Gillham was making outstanding saves but time was running out on the Huskies.

With 48 seconds remaining in regulation time Randy Carroll scored assisted by Tim Morin and John Bernier, and the Huskies remained alive to play overtime.

For 18 minutes, the play was marked by end to end rushes and great performances by both goaltenders.

Then with two minutes remaining "big Michael Tremblay intercepted a clearing pass and scored an unassisted goal." The Huskies won 6-5, and were the NOHA champions.

The Chapleau team had defeated Matheson, Smooth Rock Falls and Englehart to reach the finals. Randy Carroll was mentioned as the "big man" scoring the winner in first game and tying goal in second, but great credit also went to goaltender Shane Gillham. Tim Bernier and John Bernier each collected nine points.

Coaches Jamie Doyle and Mike Tangie had done an incredible job. Jamie had been working in Chapleau when the season started, but was transferred to Sudbury so travelled for games,. Jamie was also playing for the Chapleau Intermediate "A" Huskies.

The government recently released its first Emissions Reduction Plan, a requirement under the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, to provide Canadians with clear guidelines as to how it plans to achieve its objective of attaining netzero carbon emissions by 2050. With release of the plan, we now have a sense of what the government's priorities will be, and it's at best a mixed bag.

This past week the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) release their report, which UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres described as “a file of shame, cataloguing the empty pledges that put us firmly on track toward an unlivable world.” This is the type of grim language that years ago we would have expected from hardcore environmentalists but is now being used by the UN Secretary General.

Climate change is no longer a theoretical threat. The damage it inflicts is becoming increasingly clear, with wildfires, droughts, and the incidence of extreme weather events becoming the norm rather than the exception. Not only are we causing irreparable damage to our planet, but also severe impact on our economy and way of life. This fall's floods across B.C., for example, has accrued a total estimated cost of $9-billion, including $515million in private insurance claims, according to a recent Globe and Mail analysis, making it Canada's

Reduction Plan is fairly ambitious. The government's stated goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 40-45 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, with the longer-term goal of eliminating the country's carbon footprint by 2050. However, the details within the plan leaves a lot to be desired if we are to cut emissions.

Much of their current plan centers on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) strategy. The C C U S strategy gives large corporations tax incentives to adopt carbon capture, which has proven to be almost inconsequential in our efforts to combat climate change up to this point. Environmental Defence, a leading Canadian environment advocacy organization, crunched the numbers, and found that the Canadian government had funded $5.8 billion for carbon capture since 2000, which resulted in a reduction of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions by only 0.05% over that period. What the CCUS does, in effect, is provide subsidies to the fossil fuels industry to implement a carbon capture model, and then roll those funds back into production, making little impact in actual carbon reduction. Even if carbon capture worked as intended, it still would not see widespread use until at least 2028, meaning it would have limited time to actually reduce carbon emissions before the 2030 reduction target.

There are some positive elements of the Emissions Reduction Plan that help Canadians make their own impact in reducing carbon emissions. There will be a $150-million Canada

Greener Homes Loan program that incentivizes people to make their own home renovations to reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy costs. But while these incentives help individuals and organizations reduce their carbon footprint, it's clear that the largest emitters remain the oil and gas sector and transportation, accounting for 51% of total emissions.

If we want to get serious about climate change, the first thing we need to do is stop subsidizing the oil and gas industry. In 2021, the Federal government provided $8.6 billion in subsidies to the industry and stopping these subsidies could cut emissions by 10%. We must also get serious about Electric Vehicles (EVs) as part of the solution and in order to do this we must build the infrastructure needed to allow EVs to become a reasonable alternative to gas and diesel.

It's also important that we fund programs like the ecoEnergy Retrofit program to allow people with lower incomes to make their own home energy renovations, a Clean Job Training Centre to ensure that energy workers can get the training and assistance they need to transition to clean energy jobs We cannot allow Canada's carbon emissions to go unchecked any longer. There will be more details in the coming weeks and months about where the government's priorities are, but if we don't start acting now, we may not be ready to pay the cost of procrastination

Environmental Defence, une importante organisation canadienne de défense de l'environnement, a analysé les chiffres et a découvert que le gouvernement canadien avait financé 5,8 milliards de dollars pour le captage du carbone depuis 2000, ce qui a permis de réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre du Canada de seulement 0,05 % sur cette période. The Cossette Family Brings Its Expertise To Ontario Today, the Cossette family is proud to announce plans to re-launch the Oriented Strand Board (OSB) mill located in Wawa, in the riding of Algoma-Manitoulin.

The Ontario Government announced this morning that it will provide $15 million in financial assistance to purchase modern equipment and hire the employees needed to set up and operate the plant.

This project represents an investment of over $180 million and the creation of 140 direct jobs. The company is committed to working with local communities to maximize the economic benefits. The region, like many others, is currently experiencing labour shortages and the management team is counting on the company's values as well as innovative recruitment and training strategies to attract the talent needed to complete this project. still a lot of work to be done before we produce our first panel. This project will benefit and provide opportunities for the entire population.

On behalf of the Cossette family, employees, and partners, I would like to thank the Government of Ontario for its support of this promising project for the Northeast region and for all of Ontario."

Said Yolaine Rousseau, Executive Vice President of Wawa OSB Inc. The Wawa plant was built in the mid1990s and operated until 2007 to produce OSB. In 2013, the site was converted to a pellet mill which was closed in 2017. The investments will modernize the equipment and restart OSB production in line with the company's sustainable forest management practices.

Play in the first period was intense as centerman Jordan Martineau opened the scoring for the Huskies with back-to-back goals assisted

by Jack Cyr and Fynn Manttari. Cole Ellis would add a third with only 1 second remaining in the first period giving the Huskies a comfortable lead going into the second.

Second period action saw the Huskies going on the offensive again, as captain Cole Ellis scored back-to-back goals at the halfway mark of the period, one assisted by goalie Brett Andre. Unable to crack the strong defensive play of Parker Baronette-Moore, Jack Carter, Fynn Manttari and Jack Cyr, the Gold Kings were held scoreless throughout the third period when Martineau and Ellis combined for the Huskies final goal of the tournament bringing the score to 6-0 and recording a second shutout for goalie Brett Andre.

To the resounding cheers of their coaches, family, friends and even Carter Pullen who made

the long drive to Kap with his family to support his team after being injured earlier in the season, the Huskies celebrated their most important victory of their undefeated season, clinching the NOHA “A” Division Tournament of Champions and earning an unprecedented berth at the Ontario Hockey Federation U15 2022 Championships, hosted by the Quinte West Gold Hawks of the OMHA in Trenton, April 22-24th.

Head Coach of the Huskies, Kirk Ellis, assistant coaches Allen Cyr and Trevor Bernath, trainers Rob Sanchioni and Matti Manttari and team manager Michele Martineau are extremely proud of the accomplishments of the team and are looking forward to competing at the All-Ontario Championships at the end of the month representing the communities of Chapleau and Wawa. En effet, les lave es sont faites à par r des bouts de fils qui restent une fois que l'on a terminé les morceaux sur un mé er. Alors, elles peuvent avoir des couleurs et non seulement blanche comme vendu dans les magasins. Les « guenilles » sont soient tricotées, crochetées ou ssées. Elles sont

excellentes pour laver la vaisselle et autres. Pour ce qui est des linges à vaisselle, les sserandes s'amusent à me re différents patrons de couleurs variées.

The Ontario government is providing a grant of up to $15 million over four years to Wawa OSB Inc. through the Forest Sector Investment and Innovation Program to support a new state-of-the-art plant that will produce oriented strand board (OSB), an important material for building new homes. This investment will build a stronger forestry sector, create jobs and bring economic growth to northern and Indigenous communities.

“Funding this new plant is a win for Ontario, Wawa OSB Inc., and the entire community of Wawa,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. “An investment of this size is one more way our government is supporting forestry and ensuring we secure the materials we need for our plan to Build Ontario.

This exciting opportunity is another example of a new company choosing to invest in Ontario because of an improved business environment, and it will bring good jobs back to this region and benefit Indigenous communities.”

Ontario has a competitive advantage over other jurisdictions in the production of OSB because of its abundance of low-grade poplar and birch. Wawa OSB Inc. is investing $181 million to build the province's third OSB manufacturing facility which will expand Ontario's OSB production capacity to satisfy growing demand for building materials in Canada and the U.S.

“Through Ontario's Forest Sector Investment and Innovation Program we are creating jobs and supporting innovation and economic growth in the North,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “Our government is proud to support this investment by Wawa OSB to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and we will continue to support small and medium-sized businesses to bring jobs, opportunities and prosperity to people and communities in Northern Ontario.”

Le Plan de réduction des émissions comporte des éléments positifs qui aident les Canadiens à avoir leur propre incidence sur la réduction des émissions de carbone. Il y aura un investissement de 150 millions de dollars dans la Stratégie canadienne pour des bâtiments écologiques, qui permettra aux provinces, aux territoires et aux municipalités de rénover leurs bâtiments pour tirer parti des technologies vertes et de l'efficacité énergétique. Cela s'ajoute à d'autres investissements dans le programme de la Subvention canadienne pour des maisons plus vertes, qui incite les gens à faire leurs propres

rénovations domiciliaires afin de réduire leur empreinte carbone et d'économiser sur les coûts énergétiques. Mais si ces mesures incitatives aident les particuliers et les organisations à réduire leur empreinte carbone, il est clair que les plus gros émetteurs restent le secteur pétrolier et gazier et le secteur du transport, qui représentent 51 % des émissions totales.

Si nous voulons nous attaquer sérieusement aux changements climatiques, la première chose à faire est de cesser de subventionner l'industrie pétrolière et gazière. En 2021, le gouvernement fédéral a versé 8,6 milliards de dollars de subventions à l'industrie et l'arrêt de ces subventions pourrait réduire les émissions de 10 %. Nous devons également considérer sérieusement les véhicules électriques (VE) comme une partie de la solution et, pour ce faire, nous devons construire l'infrastructure nécessaire

pour permettre aux VE de devenir une solution de rechange raisonnable à l'essence et au diesel.

Il est également important que nous financions des programmes tels que le programme de rénovation écoÉNERGIE, qui permet aux personnes à faible revenu d'effectuer elles-mêmes des rénovations énergétiques dans leur maison, ainsi qu'un Centre de formation aux emplois propres, afin que les travailleurs du secteur de l'énergie puissent obtenir la formation et l'aide dont ils ont besoin pour passer à des emplois dans le domaine de l'énergie propre.

Nous ne pouvons plus permettre que les émissions de carbone du Canada ne soient pas contrôlées. Bringing Passenger Rail Back to Northeastern Ontario Reinstating service between Timmins and Toronto will make travel more convenient and spur economic growth The Ontario government is investing $75 million to bring passenger rail service back to Northeastern Ontario, restoring a key transportation option that was previously cancelled in 2012. Service will be reinstated between Timmins and Toronto, helping to connect Northern Ontario as the government invests in unlocking the full economic potential of northern industries, resources and minerals.

“The previous government chose to cancel this rail service, cutting people and economies in Northeastern Ontario off from the rest of the province,” said Premier Doug Ford. “At a time when our government is building up home-grown supply chains that connect resources, industries and workers in the north with the future of clean steel, electric vehicles and batteries, we're restoring this vital transportation link. We're getting it done and bringing passenger rail back to Northeastern

Ontario.”

The province released an updated initial business case that outlines options for passenger rail service from Toronto to Timmins. Future feasibility work on a preferred route will include a new rail connection to Cochrane, expanding the reach of this critical rail transit to 5,300 more people and providing a connection to Polar Bear Express service to Moosonee.

“Restoring Northeastern passenger rail service is critical to building the regional economy and making life easier for people living in the North,” said Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “Our government is delivering for Northern Ontario through historic investments in rail service, roads, highways and bridges so that people living in these communities have a transportation network that works for them.”

“The return of passenger rail to Timmins is

imperative to our region's growth and prosperity.

As a regional hub and with Porcupine as the future terminus location, we will most certainly see positive impact on our tourism and industry sectors,” said George Pirie, Mayor of Timmins.

“This investment solidifies the government's belief in our city. Residents will have another viable travel option to Toronto and points south. This is imperative for access to medical appointments and travel. It will improve our quality of life and the well-being of the community by strengthening access to and from Timmins and the north.”

With a potential in-service date in the mid2020s, passenger rail service will be offered based on seasonal travel demands and will range from four to seven days a week. The rail service will provide passengers with access to reliable overnight travel options while commuting between Northern Ontario and Toronto.

mops are made from the leftover threads that is left on a loom once the pieces have been finished.

Therefore, they can have colors and not just white as sold in stores.

Dishcloths or “rags” are either knitted, crocheted or woven. They are excellent for washing dishes...

As for the dish towels, the weavers love to make different patterns in various colors.

Conservative and Liberal governments built a system where big, private corporations relegate seniors in institution-like facilities. They cut corners when it comes to staffing and care in order to pocket bigger profits. And it was our own elected officials who helped them do it!. The Conservatives and the Liberals before them cut inspections. They cut funding. They froze budgets. And they blocked public inquiries. So who is it exactly that the governments have been looking out for up to now?

Prior to the pandemic, we had all heard heartbreaking stories of seniors dehydrated, injured without explanation, left to develop bedsores, and not being given the time or the help to eat, dress themselves, bathe or even get to the bathroom. A revolving door of underpaid, parttime workers, like personal support workers (PSWs) were run off their feet, while one-sizefits-all care often erased people's culture, foods, and language.

When the COVID-19 pandemic got into these homes, Doug Ford tried to save money by doing the bare minimum. Tragically, more than 1,870 people lost their lives in the first wave of COVID-19. People's parents and grandparents were left fearful, confused and afraid to get sick and die alone, sometimes in horrible conditions.

We just cannot let things stand the way they are now. We need a plan for better aging.

And the good news is, I believe the NDP has such a plan called Aging Ontarians Deserve the Best, which can be found on our party website ondp.ca.

We know why and how the system is broken and have a plan how fix senior care. We are committed to; · Clearing waiting lists · helping seniors live in their own homes longer · building small, modern family-like homes, right in the neighbourhoods where seniors now live · Staff up with full-time, well-paid, welltrained caregivers · Make all long-term care public and notfor-profit Ask your child or teen if grandma and grandpa deserve the best. Ask them if they have paid their dues. There is always hope for a better future; better for our seniors; better for us when we get to that point in life; and better for our children so they won't have to deal with the same fears, guilt and anxieties when it's our turn to enjoy the benefits of our work when we become our parents. After all, will we not also deserve the best?
