Today, Liberals announced measures to help Canadian seniors and retirement savings weatherthisstorm:

1. Protect retirement savings by reducing the minimum amount that must be withdrawn from a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) by 25% for one year. This will allow Canadians seniors more flexibility in choosing whentodrawfromtheirretirementsavings;and,

Singh: NDPWillBuild3MillionHomesby2030—andMakeHousingAffordableAgain

NDPLeaderJagmeetSinghannounceda plan today to build 3 million homes by 2030—doubling the current pace—by speeding up construction, protecting existing rentals, and trainingtheworkersneededtodeliverit.

“What people want is simple: a home theycanafford,inacommunitytheylove,”said Singh.“Butthat’soutofreachfortoomany—not because they did anything wrong, but because Liberal and Conservative governments made choicesthatputprofitsaheadofpeople.”

The NDP will replace the expiring Liberal Housing Accelerator Fund with a permanent, $16 billion national housing strategy—made up of the Canadian Homes Transfer and the Communities First Fund. The plangivescitiesandprovincesthetoolstobuild homes faster, protect affordable rentals, and

lowercostsforfamilies.

While Mark Carney has no plan for renters and won’t commit to rent control, and Pierre Poilievre wants to hand the crisis to speculatorsanddevelopers,NewDemocratsare readytobuildhomespeoplecanactuallyafford.

“This housing crisis didn’t just happen—it’stheresultofdecadesofchoicesthat putspeculatorsaheadofrenters,andprofitahead of people,” said Singh. “We’re here to change that.”

TheNDP’splanpromises:

• 3 million new homes, including nonmarketandaffordablehousing

• Stronger rent protections to stop renovictionsandpricegouging

• Faster construction and good jobs with Canadian-madematerialsandmodernmethods

The Canadian Homes Transfer will reward cities that build quickly, allow more townhomesandapartments,andprioritizehomes near transit. The Communities First Fund will support provinces in building the infrastructure needed for growth—like water, transit, and public services—while requiring rent control, inclusivezoning,andhomelessnessstrategies. Todeliveronthisplan,theNDPwilltrain over 100,000 skilled workers, including newcomers and those affected by Donald Trump’srecklesstradewar.

“Electing New Democrats means building homes people can actually afford, protecting the rentals they rely on, and creating good jobs in every community,” said Singh. “We’re fighting to put people first—and when youvoteNDP,that’sexactlywhatyou’llget.”

LiberalHousingPlanwillbuildmorehomesusingCanadianlumber

In the face of President Trump's tariffs, we need to build. Today, Mark Carney highlighted the Liberal plan to use Canadian resources and ingenuity to create higher-paying jobs for our workers in the forestry industry and to build more homes Canadians can afford.

“In the face of President Trump's tariffs, we need to build for Canadians,” said Mark Carney, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “WewillbuildhomesCanadianscanaffordand, intheprocess,createanewindustrythatcantake ontheworld.Wewillnotonlyunleashtheprivate sectorbyreducingcostsandredtape,wewillalso get the government back into the business of affordablehousing–partneringwithworkersand industry and using Canadian solutions, such as softwood lumber and mass timber, to build a strongerCanada.”

The softwood lumber industry and mass timber technologies are central to our plan to buildatascaleandpacenotseensincetheSecond World War. Using these Canadian solutions, a MarkCarney-ledLiberalgovernmentwilldouble the pace of residential construction to almost 500,000newhomesayearoverthenextdecade:

· Create Build Canada Homes (BCH) to getthefederalgovernmentbackintothebusiness of building affordable homes at scale, including on public lands. This will help communities facingaffordabilitychallenges,andhelpbuilders addressrisingcostsoflandandconstruction;

· Build Canada Homes will catalyze the housing industry with over $25 billion in financing for innovative prefabricated home builders in Canada, so that these factories can scale up production, including through bulk orders of units from manufacturers to create sustained demand. We will prioritize Canadian technologies and resources such as mass timber and softwood lumber, as well as create more apprenticeship opportunities to grow our skilled tradesworkforce;

· Cut municipal development charges in halfformulti-unitresidentialhousingforaperiod of five years to lower the cost of homebuilding andmakehousingmoreaffordable;and,

· Reintroduceamajortaxincentivewhich,

whenoriginallyintroducedinthe1970s,spurred tens of thousands of rental housing across the country.

In order to build smarter and more sustainably, a Mark Carney-led Liberal government will also make it easier for families to make climate conscious choices. We will invest $1 billion to power more homes with efficient and affordable electric heating and cooling and make homes more resilient to extremeweatherby:

· Funding home retrofits and lowering utility bills while making it easier for low- and middle-incomehouseholds,includingrenters,to adoptheatpumpsandenergyefficiencyupgrades including insulation upgrades, heat pump installation,andwindowreplacements;

· Lowering household risks to floods and wildfires, directly helping Canadian families to protect against floods, wildfires, and other extreme weather events. This will help with funding oriented towards adaptation measures such as repairing or replacing your roof, installingasumppump,orsealingcracksinyour foundations;and,

· A Mark Carney government will use a reformed carbon credit market to finance these climate conscious choices, meaning that big polluters,nottaxpayers,willpay.

This builds on our plan to cover costs of apprenticeship training and to create more training opportunities in the skilled trades, so more Canadian workers can join these professions, secure higher-paying careers, and help us build the homes we need. And it will benefit from commitments to ensure full labour mobility for skilled trades, agreed by First MinistersinOttawaonMarch21,2025.AMark Carneygovernmenthaspledgedtodoitspartby tablinglegislationtoendFederaltradebarriersby CanadaDay.
