In commenting about his experience growing up in northern Ontario, he remarked that “it was a great place to grow up in terms of access to the bush and the freedom one had as a youth; however, back in the day when I was growing up, there was little if any acknowledgement that Native people had a culture let alone any mention of it in school.” Ruffo has

since strived to change this oversight and, among his numerous publications, he has written the entry on Indigenous prose and poetry for Cambridge University Press' History of Canadian Literature (2009) and has coedited a new edition of An Anthology of Canadian Native Literature in English (2013) for Oxford University Press. He has also written and directed an award winning feature film, A Windigo Tale,
