Chapleau citizens rattled by possible Post Office closure P

etition sheets have been distributed throughout our community this week and everyone is urged to sign them. The content of the petition is as follows: The federal government is allowing Canada Post to close public post offices in spite of a moratorium on closures in rural and small towns. The government expects Canada Post to inform

people at least one month prior to closing, moving or amalgamating their public post office and explore options that address people's concerns. A month is an inadequate amount of time for a whole community to discuss a closure and explore options. Public post offices connect communities throughout this vast land, helping us to overcome differ-

ences and distances and play a key role in our social and economic life by providing the infrastructure that healthy communities need to thrive and businesses need to grow. Carol Hughes brought a petition from residents of AlgomaM a n i t o u l i n Kapuskasing to the attention of MP s today in the House of Commons. In the spirit of

participatory democracy, Hughes tabled the petition opposed to rural post office closures and the use of remailers while calling for improvements to services in rural areas. “ The petition asks the government to ensure moratoriums on post office closures and that these be maintained,” said Hughes. “(It) also opposes the legalization of remailers and asks that the proposed

legislation be withdrawn.” The petition is timely with fears that more communities will lose their local postal service as money becomes tight. Hughes continued to call on the government to “ensure that Canada Post expands and improves postal services within rural areas, given the key role that these services play in the social and eco-

nomic life of our communities in these rural areas such as Val Rita, Kapuskasing, Moonbeam, Chapleau, Wawa, Manitouwadge and White River.” A reply from the government is expected within 45 days. If none is received the document is sent to committee to determine what the response should be and why the government has not replied.

The Will And The Spirit A

raging storm, a midnight seance, a missing person and a smuggling ring. As improbable as it sounds this is the action that will be on stage on December 4 and 5. The Chapleau High School Drama Club presents "The Will And The

Long Term Forecast Friday High 8 Low 3 Saturday High 8 Low 3 Sunday High 4 Low -2 Monday High 4 Low -3 Tuesday High 5 Low -3 Wednesday High 6 Low -3

Spirit" by David Meyer, in association with Pioneer Drama Service. Neal Downer doesn’t believe in ghosts and that is good because he would never make it through this spooky night! In order to fulfill the terms of the will of his late eccentric uncle and inherit Downer Estate, he has to spend the night in the dilapidated mansion. The estate is rumoured to have a mysterious curse on it and is haunted, but that doesn't scare away Neal, his fiancee, Babs, or his best friend, Rudy. Nor does it deter to two eager reporters or the

pair of stranded, roadweary motorists. Several humorous encounters with an older spirit during the night, however, changes Neal's mind about ghosts, especially after seeing the spirit's union membership card. If only he could convince the others that the ghost is real! But that's not all Neal has to worry about! Don’t miss this fall’s presentation directed by Hilary Arsenault and Gabriela Dell. Dinner theatre will take place on December 4 at 6:00. Tickets for the general public are numbered and will go

on sale for $30.00 at the High School on Monday, November 23 at 8:30 am. Prime rib will be served. There are no advanced sales

for the regular performance on Saturday, December 5. Coffee, juice and desserts will be available at intermission for a donation. The

curtain will rise promptly at 7:00pm. If possible patrons are asked to bring a donation for the Chapleau High School food drive.
