Sister with local roots chosen Superior General of her order

n July 24th, in N a m u r , Belgium, the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, elected Sister Réjeanne Roussel as their Superior General. This is the first time in the Order’s history that the post is occupied by a Canadian.

Sister Réjeanne went to primary school in the old Sacred Heart School in Chapleau which was operated by the Sisters of St.Mary who served our community for close to fifty years. She then went on to Ottawa to complete her secondary and univer-

sity studies. In 1960, she entered the convent in this same congregation and in 1968, was sent to Africa as a missionary where she devoted herself for the next 37 years to education and guidance to young congolese nuns. Sister Réjeanne would periodically return to Chapleau to visit her mother, Mrs. Lea Roussel, who passed away in January 2005 at Cedar Grove. R e c e n t l y, S i s t e r Réjeanne visited her s i s t e r, M r s . R i t a Mitchell who resides at 57 Pine St. The Sisters of St.Mary of Namur are present in 10 countries: Belgium, England, Canada, United States, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Cameroon and Tanzania. During her six

year mandate, Sister Réjeanne will reside in Belgium, while visiting the diverse communities that are involved mainly in education, youth pastoral, parish pastoral and the medical field. Despite her numerous travels and journeys , Sister Réjeanne is always happy to come home to her birthplace in Northern Ontario and its friendly people. Museum Committee Wraps Up Exciting 2007 Season The Chapleau Heritage Museum Committee met recently following a very successful season that was highlighted b y t h e 4 0 t h a n n i v e r s a r y celebration held on July 1st, 2007. One of the featured displays at the 40th anniversary was a 40-year pictorial display put together by Chair Doug Greig. This display has now been compiled into a book and will be

loaned to the B i g n u c o l o Wi n g hospital residents after which it will be made available to the public through the Library, early in the New Year. The Committee is still awaiting word from Canadian Pacific Railway as to whether or not they will be able to move steam engine 5433 and enable the Town to proceed at long last with their Master Museum Plan in 2008. The plans have been

drawn up and a fundraising campaign is planned once the goahead is received. The museum season is over now but your Committee continues to meet on a regular basis. The Museum saw a significant increase in the number of visitors in the past year and is working hard to ensure that it remains an important and active part of our community into the future.

C'est à Ottawa qu'elle a completé ses études secondaires et universitaires. En 1960, elle entra comme religieuse dans cette même congrégation et en 1968, elle fût envoyée comme missionnaire en Afrique ou elle se dévoua pendant 37 ans tant dans l'enseignement secondaire que dans la formation de jeunes religieuses congolaises. Elle re v e n a i t p é r i o d i quement à Chapleau pour rendre visite à sa mère, Mme Lea Roussel, décédée au Cedar Grove en Janvier 2005. Dernièrement elle était chez sa soeur, Mme Rita Mitchell au 57 rue Pine.

La Congrégation des Soeurs de Ste Marie de Namur est aujourd'hui présente dans 10 pays: Belgique, Angleterre, Canada, Etats-Unis, R e p u b l i q u e Dominicaine, Brésil, République du Congo, Rwanda, Cameroun et Tanzanie. Au cours de son mandat de 6 ans, Soeur Réjeanne résidera en Belgique tout en visitant ces diverses communautés i m p l i q u é e s principalement dans la tâche de l'éducation, la pastorale - jeunesse, la pastorale paroissiale et le domaine medical. Malgré ses nombreux déplacements et les périples qu'elle devra encore e f f e c t u e r, S o e u r Rejeanne est toujours heureuse de retrouver son village natal dans le Nord de l'Ontario et sa population si attachante.

Youth arrested in Chapleau On the 31st October 2007, the Superior East OPP investigation revealed a 16 year old youth was responsible for the theft of weapons stolen from a Cherry Street address in Chapleau on Saturday n i g h t . O P P Emergency Response Team and 2 OPP Canine Units assisted Superior East OPP with the arrest. A portion of Cherry Street was blocked off

while Police surrounded a building where the suspect was hiding out. On the 1st November 2007 at 12:30 A.M., the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The 22 calibre rifle was recovered. The youth will be held in custody awaiting a Bail Hearing in Timmins to answer to numerous criminal charges.
