e l a y Te a m s came together to raise a total of just under $20 000 this year for the fight to eradicate cancer. The all night event displayed this community's stamina and fortitude when it comes to the subject of f i g h t i n g c a n c e r.

The citizens of Chapleau are the most caring and generous people anywhere, per person we continue to raise more money than any other Northern Relay for Life event.

from Christmas Eve until Christmas morning or even just the days until Saturday morning cartoons.

As the years have passed not much has changed. I still count down the days to most of those things, well except my birthday. I NEVER count down the days until that anymore! There is in recent years something new that I've started counting...The days until Old Man Winter settles in and hopefully a TON of snow to go with it!

I know some of you are already dreading it...the cold, the shoveling, starting your car in the morning and the layers and layers of clothes to keep warm. But for some of us, this signifies the beginning of our short, but sweet ski season.

The Chapleau Ski Club is run by a volunteer Board of Directors and though it is not open when there is no snow, it takes year round thought, care and preparation to make it a successful

community organization! Through much fundraising, donations from businesses and community members, trail sponsorships and volunteer hours we are able to keep this “diamond in the rough” open in Chapleau. Without these, we would not be able to accomplish this and the Ski Club Executive would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has contributed to keeping us alive!

In past years, the Chapleau Ski Club

has held spaghetti suppers, penny sales, basket raffles, ski-athons, barbeques and grocery raffles. In order to keep the ski hill active this year we have some events already planned.

Please add these dates to your calendar and come and support our Ski Club.

Dear Editor: I am writing in follow up to a letter printed last week from a concerned family member in regards to the family satisfaction survey they received asking for their evaluation of the care and service received by their loved one at the Bignucolo Residence (long term care wing of Chapleau Health Services).

The writer was correct that the cover letter sent out by the independent company, National Research Corporation Canada (NRCC), with the surveys contained incorrect contact information. I apologize to all the family members who received this letter for any concerns that this may have caused. It is normal company practice that NRCC includes a cover letter from the institution with the satisfaction surveys so that family members or substitute decision makers know that the

request for feedback about our services is in fact legitimate.

Normally, each year after SSCHS submits our updated information to NRCC they send us an updated draft electronic letter to review and approve prior to the surveys being mailed out. Unfortunately, due to human oversight at NRCC this year this approval process did not occur. They will be sending a letter of apology to all family members who received the surveys.

It is important to assure everyone though that this clerical error on the cover letter in no way affects the quality or the usefulness of the information gathered by the surveys. It is legally required by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care that resident satisfaction surveys be conducted each year, and it is important that these surveys be conducted by an independent third party so that residents and families feel the

freedom to provide open and honest feedback.

W i t h o u r commitment to quality and patient centred care, the results of these surveys are important tools for SSCHS to get feedback on what we are doing well and where we n e e d t o m a k e improvements. NRCC also provides us with information on how we compare to provincial

and national averages.

The results are closely monitored and shared with our board, staff, physicians, residents and families.

Letters to the Editor This is in regards to the letter from Bill McLeod of September 7th.

Everything in his letter is based on hear-say and innuendo and it is deplorable that he can use the news media to vilify people who are long gone and unable to defend themselves.

I am sure his mother would have told him that if you can't say anything good about someone, don't say anything at all.

But this notion is foreign to him and is amply personified in one of his former works

of trash.

Our children were taught by Madeline Pellow and found her to be an excellent and compassionate teacher.

She was a teacher who taught her pupils the power of literature and many of her students became interested in reading and enjoying books.

The only reason I can think of for McLeods' actions, is to feed his big fat ego...

Peter Bernier recalls Chapleau memories including roar of falling snow and hitching rides on ice sled skis

Chapleau Moments by Michael J. Morris Peter Bernier, a member of one of Chapleau's pioneer families was having coffee recently in Sudbury where he lives now and started thinking on the subject of changes, so put together some anecdotes from his conversation about growing up and living in Chapleau and sent them to me.

Peter was most active in Chapleau community life, especially during the 1970s when he served as a member and chair of the Chapleau Recreation Committee in 1978 when the Chapleau Recreation Committee was officially opened. He was also president of the Chapleau Junior 'B' Huskies Hockey Club when the

team played in the International Junior 'B' Hockey League.

As an aside, Peter's father Gene B e r n i e r, w i t h Yv o n Martel and their volunteers were mainly responsible for the construction of the airport at Chapleau -now called the Eugene Bernier Airport.

Peter wrote that he seldom saw kids playing outside now adding: "I remember some interesting things.

In our area of town, There must have between six and eight rinks outside, built on gardens or driveways. It seems to me that they appeared some time in December and lasted until March or April. Skates were optional and tennis balls

(pucks) were mandatory.

"Hockey sticks were expensive. A practice by Hespeller was $1.50 or so. To get the money it was necessary to do work around the house - shovelling walks etc.

"Games lasted until dark or until the whistle for shift change at C.P.R. "Often a game would spring out on the street. This meant that you had to be on the lookout for vehicles.

Then the call CAR!.

Everyone was the ROCKET or TIM HORTON." Peter lived on Elgin Street, and after all these years, I am delighted to learn that kids "on the other side of town" from where I lived also played road hockey.

played on Aberdeen Street and environs where Keith 'Buddy' Swanson, played and did the play by play a la Foster Hewitt at the same time.

Just think, today those games, on either side of town, would now be going viral on You Tube. And I am sure there would be playoffs for the all Chapleau Road Hockey Championship between teams from both

sides of town, and likely the Planer area too.

M a y b e Chapleau kids still take to the road?

Peter also recalled the ice Houses of the CPR and the reason for the - Ice gang - (dream job for all young lads) He explained to his coffee partner where the ice came from and how it was trucked by truck on those huge ice sleds driven by heroes who braved the ice with their trucks. Dalma Landry and Marcel Dion come to mind. I remember that we would try to jump on the skis to get a ride.

"Probably a dangerous thing but we were young and going to live forever."

The ice came f r o m t h e Kebsquasheshing River, near the old water pump house, and hauled up Elgin Street to the ice houses at the CPR. In the summer it was used on the CPR passenger trains to air condition the cars.

The summer ice gangs were also a dream job for many Chapleauites.

Moving to the other side of town, Peter wrote, "I remember the swings down by the old town hall. The big thing was to see if it was possible to pump hard enough to reach the top of the swing.

"There was a merry-go-round there and it was mandatory that one would try to get it going fast enough to throw a person off. We did not know at the time we were experiencing centrifugal force ( having too much fun for science).

“Don't forget the teeter totter where you learned who your friends were ( the ones who did not jump off )" I sure remember each of those and was also able to play on them during recess time at Chapleau Public School.

He also recalled the roars inside and outside the Chapleau Memorial Arena on

Lorne Street during hockey games on a Saturday night.

"Remember the roar of the crowds in the old Chapleau Memorial Arena. The musty smell from the steam heat from the CPR. The roar of the snow sliding off the arena roof onto roofs of cars parked there by unsuspecting out of town fans."

The fans surely must have wondered why those prime parking spaces near the main entrance to the arena were empty. They sure learned at the end of the game.

Peter worked at Smith and Chapple Ltd. and shared this anecdote about Joe Shannon, the manger of the men's wear. I worked in the store's men's wear department with Mr. Shannon while attending high school and university and can fully attest to Peter's comments.

"Joe Shannon was one of the best salesmen I ever knew. I was in the men's wear with him one day when a customer came in for pair of laces. That was

back when people still tied their shoes instead of just stepping into them as they do today. I watched in amazement as Joe innocently asked questions and gently led the man on a trip through his wallet.

"When he left the store, he didn't need the laces. as laces came with the new shoes he bought. The shoes were coloured so they matched the new suit, shirt and ties. It istill impressive today and I do not remember Joe being p u s h y. H e w a s j u s t serving the customer.

"Joe was the one who also taught me that we had to keep the dollars in Chapleau. If we did not have the item in stock, it was far better to phone the competition to find it; rather than having them go out of town to get it.

As he said it, 'The competition has to eat too - they just don't have to eat Steak!'."

Probe Mines Continues to Intersect High-Grade Gold on its Borden Gold Project Probe Mines Limited is pleased to announce that it has received further assays from its ongoing drilling program at the Company's Borden Gold project near Chapleau, Ontario.

Results for 53 diamond drill holes, BL13-465

to BL13-517, were received and were successful in expanding and confirming the continuity of the highgrade gold mineralization between Sections 1550m SE and 2000m SE. The program also included results for a small infill program

drilled at 25-metre spacing near the original discovery section (0m SE). The program was successful in delineating higher-grade mineralization within the bulk tonnage zone.

Drilling is continuing on the high-

grade zone and results will be released as soon as they are received. The Company is also planning a winter drilling program designed to continue the expansion of the High-Grade Zone ("HGZ") to the south-

High-Grade Zone Results from thirty-three (33) infill drill holes in the highgrade gold zone returned significant intersections of thick, high-grade gold mineralization.

Included in these results are the first holes from Section 2000m SE, which has successfully expanded the HGZ an additional 100 metres to the southeast. Hole BL13-

485 on section 2000m SE returned a 24.2metre wide interval averaging 4.1 g/t Au, including one sample which graded 58.6 g/t Au over 0.9 metres. In addition to the expansion holes, the infill drilling was successful in further defining the HGZ.
