Terry Fox run risks cancellation in Chapleau
Calling all volunteers!! The Chapleau Terry Fox Run is at risk of cancellation this year if individuals do not come forward to preserve this event. “Chapleau has been with us since 1988,” praises Martha M c C l e w, O n t a r i o Provincial Director. “Over $40,000 has been raised by this generous and caring community for innovative cancer research. With 6 weeks left until Run day, there is still time to preserve this annual Canadian event.” Having raised over $400 million to date, Terry's legacy continues to contribute to important and impressive strides in cancer research,

leading to breakthroughs not imaginable when Terry set out on his historic Marathon of Hope 30 years ago – and positively and immeasurably impacting countless cancer patients. This year, the 29th annual Terry Fox Run will take place Sunday September 13, 2009. The Run, an allinclusive, familyo r i e n t e d a c t i v i t y, charges no entry fee or minimum pledge amount. Participants can run, walk, blade or bike, in the company of those who share a belief that their efforts will benefit others. In the context of these tumultuous times that for many may invoke a sense of hopelessness or despair, it becomes even more imperative that the Run, with its ability to spread hope and optimism, continues to be organized. The Terry Fox Foundation is seeking an enthusiastic individual to oversee the 2009 Chapleau
Terry Fox Run. The organizer must possess exceptional leadership qualities, be a team player, and have the ability to motivate and mobilize their volunteer team and their community. The Organizer's responsibilities include: recruit committee members; facilitate planning meetings; confirm the Terry Fox Run route; promote the Run; seek refreshment donations; and oversee Run day registration and activities. The volunteer time commit-ment may range from two to four hours weekly during the months leading up to September 13th. If you wish to volunteer with an organization that prides itself on its all–inclusive and grassroots nature, while boasting one of the lowest operating costs in the non-profit sector, please contact Kim Smith at 416.924.8252 or kim@terryfoxrun. org.
especially interesting because on day 2 of the meeting, the Chiefs will be electing a new Executive Council, which consists of a Grand Chief and 3 Deputy Grand Chiefs. Candidates will be making their speeches here and 49 Chiefs will place their votes in a ballot box on the Chapleau Cree First Nation Fox Lake Reserve. The days before and after the Wednesday election the conference will take place at Ecole Secondaire Trillium in
Chapleau. This is a particularly fine venue which the Conseil Scolaire Catholique du Nouvel-Ontario has very kindly made available for this important week. H a v i n g between 150 and 300 people come to our area will provide Chapleau communities with an additional buzz of excitement and the local economy will benefit with the injection of new spending that such an occasion produces. The numbers of people that will be coming will
max out all the Chapleau area motel, bed & breakfast and resort spaces available for most of the week. This conference will provide local First Nations and friends a wonderful opportunity to broaden and deepen relationships with all Nishnawbe Aski Nation First Nations. It will provide opportunities for us to learn more about the NAN governance dimension that our local First Nations function within.
Rotarians dig in

Laughland, and friend, Al Berry, dug a narrow, shallow trench from the Civic Centre to the area
of the Rotary Gazebo on the waterfront. In the trench, a waterline and electrical line were buried. With the cooperation of the Township of Chapleau and funding by Rotary District 0710 and Chapleau's Rotary Club, Rotarians are setting up an automatic watering system for the planters around the gazebo. The technical work is being done by James Dillon. In this wet, cool summer of our discontent, everoptimistic Rotarians persist in believing that sooner or later will come a summer when watering plants will be necessary.
