Fall Fair to celebrate 40th anniversary

A

s the end of M a y i s coming, the fall fair committee is hard at work planning this year's event which is being held October 12th and 13th. This year marks the 40th anniversary and is shaping up to be

the largest ever. This year's theme is “Countries of the World”. With a total of 55 spaces available, 45 of these are already filled. Almost half of the spaces held are from out of town participants. With only ten

spaces remaining, to a v o i d d i s a p p o i n tment, it is imperative that you call Phyllis at 705-864-9017 as soon as possible, if you wish to participate in this years' edition. To mark the 4 0 t h a n n i v e r s a r y,

free ice cream and cake will be given out on Friday October 12th. This will happen shortly after 7:00 p.m. and will last until all supplies are depleted. On Saturday evening, after the fair is over, a dinner and

dance will be held for the artisans and theirs guests to celebrate 40 years of dedicated people who over the years have made the Chapleau Fall Fair what it is today. The fall fair has played a major role in Chapleau's history

and continues to do so. The Fall Fair committee wish everyone a safe and fantastic summer and wish to see all of you at the Chapleau Fall Fair's 40th anniversary on October 12th and 13th, 2012

Labour Minister Lisa Raitt has tabled back-to-work legislation to end a strike by 4,800 Canadian Pacific Railway employees

S

imply put, the strike can't go on," Raitt told the House of Commons on Monday, adding that the government must preserve Canada's reputation as an international business partner.

"The work stoppage is preventing our ability to keep products moving in and out of Canada and that undermines Canada's reputation as a reliable place to do business," she said.

Raitt said she expects the railroad to be back in business by Thursday. Raitt had signalled last week that the government was poised to step in if the union and company

couldn't reach a deal, saying the strike could cost the Canadian economy $540 million per week, as products such as wheat, coal and potash fail to reach their destinations. "Although our

economy is still recovering, it is still fragile and we have to ask whether or not for the nation's good we can allow this work stoppage at CP Rail to continue," Raitt said in Parliament Monday.

She said hundreds of businesses are being negatively affected, many Canadians are being inconvenienced. Ta l k s b r o k e down Sunday afternoon between the Teamsters Cont’d on P.4

Chapleau High School Reunion update By Nadia Fortin inety years ago Chapleau High School first opened its doors, thus allowing thousands of students to attend over the years. As the reunion draws closer, interest in the event is reaching a peak. Because we would like as many people as possible to join us in commemorating this landmark event, we are encouraging everyone to register NOW! Registrations are being accepted at the town hall as well as by mail, please do this as soon as possible and

N

be sure that you have a spot for this great event. We are still looking for volunteers to help with registration and watching the exits. Those willing to help are asked to get in touch with one of the following committee members: Nadia Huard Fortin: 705864-1255; Micheline Guertin:705-8640972;Graham Bertrand: 705-8640230. A tentative schedule has been drawn up of the weekend's activities and will appear in an upcoming Chapleau

Express edition. Spots are still available for parade floats. Come on out and show us your school spirit! Do you still have your old prom

dress? Why not let it make another public appearance by lending it to us for a display. Please contact Pam Morin at 864-0190 if you would be willing to lend us your dress

for that special weekend. The committee is anxiously awaiting the time when we see all our hard work come together!

State of emergency lifted as rain dampens area

T

he state of emergency was lifted in Timmins as rain helped dampen the fires. H i g h w a y 101W was open on Tuesday, May 29th after having been closed, on and off, for a week.

All local business owners were affected, in one way or a n o t h e r, by the highway closure. From auto parts to groceries, from mail to dew worms. How we take things for granted! The Chapleau

Express was tardy in arriving last weekend due to the highway closure, but thanks to Meredith Bernier of Chapleau, it did get here. Meredith had to drive to Hearst and Hornepayne in order to return home from a trip to Timmins.
