in Ontario. As of May 15, 2012 a total of 218 fires with 3281 hectares burning was reported. Last year, in the same time period there was a total of 106 fires. FireRangers were busy on Monday May 14 as 17 new fires were confirmed. In the Northeast Region, weather conditions supported extreme fire behaviour and several new starts were challenging. A number of road closures and evacuations have now occurred. Notable new
fires include Timmins 7 at 200 hectares and Kirkland Lake 5 at 20 hectares. Fire TIM 7 led to approximately 100 residents being evacuated from Morin Vi l l a g e , We s t r e e Village and Ruel. Fifty-eight of the evacuees are currently being housed at the Camp Gilla logging camp, located 30 kilometres west of Morin Village. The Kirkland Lake fire prompted the precautionary evacuation of two residences. Across the province, there are
currently twenty-five fires burning and 3,442 hectares under flame. The largest active fire, Wawa 4, has now reached 3,000 hectares. A weather system now tracking across the province will bring sporadic rain and the possibility of thunderstorms to some
areas. After it passes on Wednesday the drying trend will resume. Fire starts and behaviour will be steady for most of the week. Ontario has imported a CL-415 waterbomber from Newfoundland and a CL-215T from Quebec to assist with air attack efforts. Ontario aircraft
and crews are being shifted to different locations as needed. The high to extreme fire hazard has prompted several municipalities to enact fire bans. Make sure to check with your local municipal office before doing burning of any kind.
Northeast Fire Region Restricted Fire Zone Order Due to high to extreme fire hazard and increased forest fire activity, a Restricted Fire Zone Order will be in effect for the Northeast Fire Region, north of the French River from 0001 hours local daylight time on May 16, 2012 until such time as the order is revoked.
The Chapleau Fire Department was called in to put out a railway track blaze near the sewage pumping station on Martel road. Fire danger continues to be high due to dry conditions.
