his year ’s Mother’s Day will be one to remember! Mother Nature made sure that she would be remembered on this fine Spring day. A total of 30 cm of snow was scattered locally accompanied
by winds of 50 km/h. We w e r e quickly reminded that Old Man Winter had not lost his grip as reported earlier. This Spring we have seen highways closed due to flooding and sink holes and now the latest highway
closures due to a snowfall bringing in complaints from politicians looking for the perplexing absence of snowploughs. It is somewhat humorous and at the same time positive that it took a late spring snowstorm to come to that conclu-
sion. Northern drivers have realized this for the last two winters. Mother Nature does work in mysterious ways. Although not appreciated this type of weather is normal for our neck of the woods. What’s not normal is
the weather that we have had in the last 6 or 7 years. Northerners are resilient and this was but a bump in our day to day lives. This type of weather certainly cuts down on the presence of blackflies and mosquitoes.

Bishop Tom Corston of the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee announces retirement effective December 31, 2013 Chapleau Moments by Michael J. Morris R t . R e v. Thomas A. Corston, the ninth bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee has announced that he will retire from the position effective December 31, 2013. In a letter to the people of Moosonee on May 8, Bishop Corston said: "Following a rather lengthy period of prayer and reflection I have decided that it is time for me to retire. I have informed Archbishop Colin Johnson that I will resign as Bishop of Moosonee on December 31, 2013. At year’s end I will be just short of my 65th birthday and 40 years of ordination." Reporting on Bishop Corston's retirement the Angli-
can Journal said: " His retirement will coincide with the date that a decision to restructure the diocese into a mission area will take effect." B i s h o p Corston said in his letter: I do not think I can continue to provide the leadership required much beyond this point in our Diocese’s restructuring process as outlined in the Vision Quest program. It is a good plan and I believe we have done all we can to secure our future as the Anglican community in this Diocese. "I am sure that much of the angst some people are feeling will settle once the Diocese is living in the new entity. At year’s end a part-time
Administrator will be appointed who will take over the administrative ministry of the Area. While it is a good plan it is, hopefully, not forever and before too long the Diocese will feel comfortable in electing a new Bishop to oversee new growth and vitality in this northern Church." However, he is not leaving entirely as he will remain involved as "the 'Episcopal Visitor' for the Mission Area as an assurance that Confirmations and Ordinations are cared for and all parishes are visited. I will also act as 'Consultant' to the Archbishop and the Administrator for matters that may present themselves. I will easily be able to undertake those ministries from my Sudbury home for the foreseeable future or until a successor to this Office is chosen." To most people in Chapleau, the bishop is known

Both his parents come from pioneer families of the community. Tom recently was presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, of which he is chaplain. In accepting the medal, he made special note of his father who was wounded in action during World War II and all veterans. In his letter, he added: "I have enjoyed the brief time that I have been Bishop of this Diocese, in spite of the need for our having to restructure which is the cause of some sadness. I must say, however, that in my almost 40 years of ordained ministry the Lord has led me down roads I would never have gone otherwise. "It has been truly a remarkable
experience. The last few years as your Bishop have been a tremendously fulfilling opportunity to provide leadership in a changing and challenging time for the Church in the north. I am so very thankful to the people of Moosonee for your support and I praise God for you all." H e w a s ordained deacon at a service in St. John's Anglican Church in 1974 and to the priesthood in 1975in Timmins. He became bishop of Moosonee in 2010. As part of his retirement announcement, Bishop Corston shared his disappointment with a lack of progress on plans for the future historic of St. John's, Chapleau. Although St. John's was established in Chapleau in 1885, the first service was held in the present church on March 29, 1908, making it the oldest 'public' building

remaining in Chapleau. The present Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church was opened on Christmas Eve 1919 after the original church building was destroyed in a fire, and the Royal Canadian Legion Hall was built in 1920 and Chapleau Public School about the same time. B i s h o p Corston explained that in September 2012 an agreement was reached between him and some of the community leadership in Chapleau for the formation of a new Historical Society that would form a Board of Directors and apply for incorporation. That new Society would then take over the ownership of old St. John's Church which would plan to use the building as a future cultural and historical centre for the town, as well as a site for community groups to Cont’d on P.4

"Unfortunately the plans have fallen through", he wrote, adding that in a recent conversation with the Mayor of Chapleau, Andre Byham, he learned that the leadership for the project decided that they were not interested in undertaking the work required. " A t t h e moment, according to the Mayor, there is no one else in the town interested in taking over the project," Bishop Corston said He said this is a "major disappointment" as the present congregation is too small to manage the required building renovations and upkeep. However, he remains dedicated to doing everything possible to assure the old church is properly cared for, but as he expressed to the Diocesan Executive Council, this is a major dilemma for the Diocese. "It would be
horrible to allow this rich piece of Chapleau's history to deteriorate to the point where is became necessary to demolish the beautiful building." B i s h o p Corston concluded his letter: "Thank you so much for your prayers and friendship that have upheld me as your Bishop. Moosonee was my first home in the Church after ordination and because of you it continues to hold tightly to my heart. For me it has been and continues to be, in the words of Robert Renison, our fifth Bishop, 'Ye Happie Kingdom'. May God bless you as you serve our Lord Jesus Christ in the years ahead." If any are willing to assist Tom in ensuring a positive future for St. John's, please feel free to contact him, or chat with members of the church in Chapleau. My email is mj.morris @live.ca
The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board is excited to report that the Career Exploration Fair held on May 8, 2013 was a huge success. In all we had 26 booths, and over 200 job seekers that came to explore the fair during the hours of 1pm to 7pm. Students from grade 7 to grade 12 attended as well as local residents who received some very valuable information on specific careers such as mining, forestry, law enforcement and educational institutions. The Manitoulin-Sudbury District Services Board would like to extend its greatest gratitude to those who helped make this Fair happen, specially, the organizing committee, comprised of Renee Weber (École Secondaire Catholic Trillium),
Cont’d from P.3 gather, including a senior's centre. It was believed that it would be easier for such a group to apply for government funding to repair and upkeep the old church. He added that to ensure that the present Anglican congregation could
continue to use the church for worship, two representatives of the new society would be elected from the congregation. Indeed, at their annual congregational meeting in January, two members were elected to represent the Anglican concerns on the new Board.

Parce qu'on aime

James Bay Region Hospital Auxiliary Report By Shirley Goheen James Bay Region Hospital Auxiliaries met in Cochrane on April 1920. “ O u r v o l u nteers are the heart and soul of our organization” was the theme at the James Bay Region Spring conference for the Hospital Auxiliary Association of Ontario (H.A.A.0) this past month. Hosts for this year was the Lady Minto Hospital Auxiliary Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls Auxiliary. This conference brought eight auxiliaries to the Transfiguration Hall in Cochrane . Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, Chapleau, Hearst, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Kirkland Lake and Timmins Auxiliary were in attendance , Matheson, Englehart and Hornepayne were
unable to attend This conference is to bring the 11 auxiliaries for education, sharing their reports and reviewing what we can improve and share ideas said Cochrane president Dianne Denault. The number one concern or challenge is finding volunteers to be leaders said Elayne Mehare, H.A.A.O President , who also attended the conference . Elayne also stated that the auxiliaries often use the conference for recruitment and retention. Networking seemed like the most important aspect of the conference for many of the auxiliary members, getting together and exchanging ideas to see what is working or not working in other hospitals said Lisa Simpson , Co- Chair of the conference from Smooth Rock Falls . O u r n e w
Policy and Procedure Manual drafted by Dianne Denault and reviewed by Region Chair Shirley Goheen , Upcoming Chair John Duclos and Region Secretary Nellie Mitchell prior to the conference and was voted on by the auxiliaries presidents on Friday night April 19th. On April 20th all members present voted and accepted the manual H.A.A.O. President Elayne Meharg said that she believes that we are the first region to have a Policy and Procedure. I am proud of the work that we did as this was one year in the making. Bruce Peterkin former CEO of Chapleau General now MICs C.E.O at Cochrane attended the conference on Saturday where he paid a special thanks to ALL hospital auxiliaries when he sang "Without You" by Usher to show gratitude for all we do
to raise money for the hospitals, "We need to say thank you, not once, not twice . We need to say thank you every-day ," said Mr. Peterkin. Linda Sharpen from the Eye Bank of Canada was a guest speaker and she gave a presentation on Friday night and again on Saturday afternoon on benefits of the corneal transplants and eye donations. "The cornea is the clear part of your eye that you see through". She then explained that corneal transplants can improve vision, relieve pain and remove disease from the eye. The youngest corneal transplant recipient was six weeks old and the oldest was 94 years old. " I don't care if you're blind, I don't care if you have cancer, I don't care if you have diabetes" said Sharpen, who

Sometimes in life, things change Let it be said that the idea was idiotic to begin with. Why would a juggler and a soprano decide, as fully consenting adults, to do a show together? In a court of law, of course, they might plead guilty for the sheer pleasure of it – or any other equally ridiculous defence. But never mind, the fact is they were infected with a stubborn desire to share their fantasy and folly. Despite their two diametrically opposed artistic backgrounds, their sensitivity and naiveté bring them innocently together. And given the strength of their passion, they will work like mad to deliver a great show from beginning to end,

despite numerous traps and challenges. And if sometimes during their stunts they seem a bit idiotic, don't be to quick to judge them. They're just being human, after all. The Centre culturel Louis-Hémon is proud to present the variety show Sometimes in life, things change by the company Bande Artistique on May 25th at École secondaire Trillium. Bande Artistique is a circus design and production founded in 2007. Its mission is to initiate a highly original blend of various stage arts in a circus context. This brand-new production Sometimes in life, things change puts a
juggler and a soprano together on stage in a setting imbued with fantasy and clowning. It has been presented at Montreal Completement Cirque Festival and at La Tohu, la cité des arts du Cirque in 2011, as part of their regular season. The show is now touring in Canada. «This show is for the entire community of Chapleau! » said Diane Jean, «This show is a show that will make you laugh and because it is more of a circus concept there is no language barrier».
