Chapleau under the guidance of Mrs. Suzie Fortin and with support from Mrs. Sandra Ruffo. Mrs. Fortin has worked over the past month with the students on creating a Power Point presentation to help everyone understand the importance and significance of Pow Wow ceremo-
nies and Mrs. Ruffo has been hand drumming with a group of girls as part of the teachings. The presentation includes information on Pow Wows to help students understand the importance of the events they are about to participate in on Monday, May 5th at
& Secondary School during the Annual Inter-Tribal Pow Wow. The following includes the information that they have shared with our school communities and want to share with you the residents of Chapleau. What is a Pow Wow? Pow Wow's are very important to First Nations people. A Pow Wow is a celebration or social gathering. It is a time to learn about our culture, our heritage and our traditions. Powwow's are fun events – but are also very sacred. Ceremonial rituals, songs & dances are performed throughout the Pow Wow and should be respected. Tobacco and Tobacco Ties When entering the Pow Wow area, you will receive a small amount of tobacco or a tobacco
tobacco tied in cloth). This is a sacred medicine and is to be treated with respect. The tobacco is given for you to make a tobacco offering to a person or to the sacred fire. You may choose to offer your tobacco to the sacred fire to say thank you to the Creator for the special day and all that surrounds. You may choose to keep it – if you do keep your tobacco tie, keep it in a safe place, a place of honour and respect. Please remember this is a sacred item, do not open it, remember to always show proper respect to it. What will you see at the Pow Wow? Pow Wows are set up in a large circle. The central area or middle of the Pow Wow grounds is called the Arbour. In the Arbour you will see the Arena Director,
Guest Drums, Singers and Dancers. Powwows are fun events but please do not run or play around at the Powwow- especially in the arbour. Always walk in a clockwise direction around the arbour, never across or counter clockwise during the powwow. What happens at a Pow Wow? P o w Wo w s begin with a Grand Entry and are followed by a Flag Song; Veteran's Song and an Invocation/Prayer and We l c o m i n g . T h e Grand Entry is a sacred time – filming and photography is not allowed. Spectators should always rise and remove their hats for Grand Entry – unless they are wearing an Eagle Feather on their hat. Please remain standing for all parts of the Grand Entry Cont’d on P.12
