Former Trinity United Church minister Rev. Dr. Murray Arnill dies

Chapleau from 1966 to 1972, died Monday, April 14, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.

Letters to the Editor As president of the Chapleau Gymnastics Club, I am writing this letter to give people in Chapleau an insight into our club activities.

The gymnastics club has operated yearly in Chapleau since as far back as I can remember.

We have always offered a variety of classes to the children of our community, ranging from Kindergym for the young ones, to advanced gymnastics and trampoline. We have always enjoyed operating this club for the enjoyment of the youth of Chapleau and all at a reasonable cost.

H o w e v e r, i f things continue as they are, we will not have enough coaches for the

2014-2015 season. If the club only has two coaches for next year, some classes will have to be cancelled. So this is our call out for coaches. In order to be a coach, you have to attend a weekend class held by the Ontario Gymnastics Federation.

Courses are given year round, throughout Ontario. The Club would provide all travelling costs, meals and lodging. Also you do not have to be a Mary-Lou Retton or a Kerry Strug in order to be a coach. The OGF will teach you how to plan class lessons, how to spot gymnasts and everything else you need to know in order to coach a class. The only

Very much a part in community affairs, Murray served as a member and chair of the Chapleau Board of Education, president of the town hockey league, and chair of the winter carnival committee, among other activities including the Boy Scouts.

In 1971, he was elected as one of five adults on an advisory board to Chapleau Youth Action, by the young people of Chapleau.

Coffee houses for youth in the church basement were the place to be on weekends during his time in Chapleau.

Murray became chancellor of Huntington

University later in his career and was awarded a doctorate degree.

Here is an obituary, prepared by his children which sums up Murray so well: "Dad is survived by his children Catherine Hill (Francis) of Uxbridge, Ti m A r n i l l o f Newmarket, Barbara Taylor (Rob) of Barrie, The Rev. Mark Arnill (Janyce) of Deseronto and by his 14 grandchildren who love him and will miss him.

Recreation Center, the meeting is open to the public and we invite anyone interested in coaching, assisting and/or volunteering to attend the meeting. Chapleau has been on the national sports map in hockey and curling from Whitehorse, NWT to Dundas, ON, in 2014 as Doug Hong and Jason Ward were members of winning teams.

Doug was the lead on the Northern

Ontario bronze medal winning team at the Canadian Senior Curling Championship while Jason played for the Dundas Real McCoys who won the Allan cup, emblematic of senior hockey supremacy in Canada since 1908.

D o u g , o f course, for the few who may not know him, is from Chapleau, a member of the Hong family, outstanding athletes all. His grandfather established the Boston Café now the Redwood, and operated by his father Jim. As an aside, Doug played on the last hockey team I coached in Chapleau.

When I learned from Doug's cousin Kim that he would be playing in a national curling championship I contacted him.

Doug replied: "The team that represented N.O. last year did not fare so well therefore, we have to go up there early to play in the relegation round.

Double knock out, four teams for two spots.

Hope to get through that and play in the round robin Championship."

That proved to be an understatement, according to a Sudbury Star story by Bruce Heldman who wrote: "The Northern Ontario reps won bronze the hard way, playing a possible record 16 games at a national event after three prequalifying games, 11 round-robin games, a tiebreaker and a semifinal, all in nine days."

Doug also won the Most Sportsmanlike Player Award.

“You only have to be around Doug for a short while and you have a smile on your face,” Robbie Gordon one of his teammates told the Sudbury Star.

“He keeps the atmosphere light and shoots well and sweeps like a dog and has a great eye

“Doug has been to five Canadian events and that is the third time he has won the sportsmanship award, and that is voted on by the players, so that tells you everything,” Ron Henderson added in the Sudbury Star story.

Turning to Jason Ward and the Allan Cup, Charlie Purich kept me informed on the series played in Dundas where he lives.

After the Real McCoys defeated the Kenora Thistles in the semi final game, Charlie sent me an email, "Jason Ward got one goal and three assists."

B o r n i n Chapleau, Jason played in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens and other professional teams.

Charlie, who worked as a volunteer at the Allan

Cup, had met Jason earlier -- although they did not know each other in Chapleau. Small world!

Charlie still plays hockey and for about 50 years he has been the "catalyst" wherever he played -and as a volunteer at the Allan Cup too.

Ontario Road Maintenance continue to be a concern

While the Liberals and Conservatives continue to battle it out in a “he said, she said” libel lawsuit over gas plant scandal accusations; New Democrats continue to listen to your concerns and take action.

This week my colleague MPP Sarah Campbell, Kenora Rainy River, used her Private Members slot to put forward a motion to establish a Select Committee on Winter Road Maintenance and Contracts. I can tell you that over the winter months my office has been flooded with complaints regarding the dangerous road conditions throughout Algoma-Manitoulin and northern Ontario. Many of you took photos of the roads you were travelling and sent them in.

New Democrats

launched the Northern Road Report in 2011 and have continued to collect information and complaints. We routinely take these photos and complaints and present them to the Ministry of Transportation as evidence of the broken road maintenance system in Ontario.

In February of 2014, MTO announced financial discipline for four contractors in northeastern Ontario and three in the northwest. While we welcome this sort of accountability and penalty given for failing to provide service, we believe that measures need to be taken to ensure that this doesn't continue; especially when people's lives are at risk.

Northerners are experiencing more closures than ever because roads are not being cleared in a timely manner. As northerners we know we have to travel longer distances to get to services and we face longer and harsher winters which makes it much harder to get around. The Liberals have lowered the standards in the new performance based contracts and it is unfair that they are putting a price tag on safety.

Currently, the province hires contractors to plow and salt the roads; however, the province doesn't tell these contractors how many trucks to use or how many employees they should have but judges their work on whether or not the roads are cleared and the plows are running. The province has different standards for different classifications of roads.

Youth Charged With Theft Of Fentanyl On April 16, 2014 at 12:30 am, officers from the O n t a r i o P r o v i n cial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were advised that Fentanyl patches had been stolen from a residence in the town of Chapleau.

Investigation led to the arrest of a 17-

year-old youth and some of the patches were recovered. OPP continue to investigate for the outstanding patches.

The accused stands charged with the following offences: • Theft Under $5,000 as per s. 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC); • Failure to comply

with disposition – 3 counts, as per s. 137 of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA); and with • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Other Drug as per s.

4(1) of the Drug Controlled and Sub-

stance Act (CDSA).

The youth was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Chapleau, Ontario at the Youth Court of Justice on June 18, 2014.

En tant qu'organisme de soins de santé, nous nous concentrons principalement sur la santé de notre communauté et c'est pourquoi il ne sera plus permis de fumer où que ce soit sur la propriété des Services de santé de Chapleau Health Services (SSCHS). Depuis bien des années, il est interdit de fumer à moins de neuf mètres de toute entrée; néanmoins, nous emboîtons maintenant le pas à bon nombre d'autres hôpitaux de l'Ontario et nous interdirons aux gens de fumer où que ce soit sur la propriété des SSCHS à compter du 1er mai. Cette interdiction vise l'Hôpital Général de Chapleau, le Centre médical de Chapleau, la cour de la Résidence Bignucolo et les zones qui étaient auparavant désignées comme des zones fumeurs. Cette interdiction de fumer visera aussi les terrains de stationnement et les véhicules personnels stationnés sur la propriété des SSCHS. Tous les patients, visiteurs et membres du personnel devront quitter complètement la propriété de l'hôpital s'ils veulent fumer.

On pourrait demander aux personnes qui contreviennent à cette politique de quitter les lieux et, si elles ne se conforment pas à cette politique, on pourrait aussi leur remettre une ordonnance d'interdiction d'accès aux lieux.

Tous les membres du personnel infirmier de l'Équipe de santé familiale sont formés pour offrir le programme de renoncement au tabac « STOP » aux patients inscrits de l'Équipe de santé familiale. On encourage les gens de la communauté qui ne sont pas inscrits auprès de l'Équipe de santé familiale à voir leur médecin de famille au sujet des moyens qui pourraient les aider à cesser de fumer.

Chapleau Health Services will be completely smoke-free

by May 1st!

As a health care organization, our primary focus is the health of our community and it's for this reason that smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on SSCHS property. For many years, smoking has been banned within nine metres of any entrance; however we are following the lead of many Ontario hospitals, and will be banning smoking anywhere on SSCHS property, effective on May 1st.

This includes Chapleau General Hospital, Chapleau Medical Center, Bignucolo Residence Courtyard, and areas previously designated as smoking areas.

The smoking ban will also include parking lots and personal vehicles parked on SSCHS property. All patients, visitors and staff members will be required to leave the hospital property entirely, if they wish to smoke.

Violators of the policy may be asked to leave the property and also may be given trespassing orders if they do not comply with the policy.

All nurses at the Family Health Team are trained to offer the “STOP” smoking cessation program to rostered patient.

Community members who are not rostered with the Family Health Team are encouraged to see their family doctor regarding options that may help them in their efforts to quit smoking.

To e n s u r e moose populations remain healthy and resilient, Ontario is reducing adult moose tags across the province by about 18 per cent for 2014.

The reductions are in response to declining moose populations in northern Ontario, which were noted by provincial biologists during this winter's annual aerial surveys. The largest tag reductions will occur in areas with the largest declines.

Ontario has been working with key stakeholders and the hunting community to respond to these changes and plans to seek public input this summer on next steps.
