Junior Rockers: The Next Generation Of Chapleau Curlers

By Pamella Morin urling season may have come to an end, but it sure did rock! A sport that has increasingly attracted people of all ages to come out and give it a shot! The youth were the center of attention on two separate occasions.

For the second year, the Club rocked the house with its Junior Rockers program. Students from grade 4 to grade 8 were invited to participate in an eight week long after school program. It was great to see our future curlers in action! A BIG THANK YOU to

Brad Robinson, Laura Matthews, Maegan Corston and Pam Morin for volunteering your time and making this another successful year!

In March, Chapleau Curling Club opened its doors to help host the NWOSSA Championships. Including both

Taryn McCarthy, Samantha Murphy, Nicolas Morin, Sydney Gavan, Natasha Boucher, Elise & Marja Frederiksen, Cole Fortin, Nathan Espirat, Gavin Parry, Loagan Pilon, Kaleb Vallee. our local high schools, the tournament also welcomed teams from Red Lake, Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Nipigon and Manitouwadge.

The two- day event no

doubt had a ripple effect on our friendly town's economy by booking at our motels and eating at our restaurants: a POSITIVE impact for all involved!!!

There are so many ways to get involved in curling; we hope to see you rocking next season! A shout out to all those volunteers who helped throughout the season!

CTF to Premier: Better Late Than Never!

Premier Kathleen Wynne's announcement on Monday to create a dedicated fund from existing gas taxes to pay for new transportation infrastructure. The CTF has repeatedly called for such a fund, starting last May when it held a Gas Tax Honesty Day in Ontario, and most recently in CTF’s prebudget submission.

“This is a win for taxpayers,” contin-

ued Malcolm. “Instead of hiking gas taxes or the HST, or imposing new taxes on Ontario’s struggling small businesses, the government will use existing gas taxes to pay for critical infrastructure improvements.”

“It’s nice to know the government is listening to groups like the CTF, and keeping taxpayers in mind when

designing its budget,” continued Malcolm.

“We’d still like to see a law mandating all revenues from gas taxes be dedicated to roads, and an end to using debt and bonds to finance transit programs, but this is a good start.”

T h e C T F calculates that the Ontario government will collect over $3 billion in gas taxes this year and another $1.85

billion in HST on gasoline and diesel from motorists, plus another $1.27 billion in Vehicle and Driver Registration Taxes.

This totals $6.13 billion in driver taxes raised each year, compared to the $2.7 billion spent by the Ministry of Transportation on all roadway spending.

Ontario drivers are so used to being late thanks to never-ending congestion and years of neglect from the government, so we’ll just say thanks for not gouging taxpayers further.”

Letters to the Editor What's gone wrong with Services de santé de Chapleau Health Services?

It now takes up to two months to get an appointment with a physician. When a doctor at the medical clinic issues a laboratory requisition it takes the hospital 8 days to find time to take your blood. Such delays are hard to justify.

We received more timely care when there were only visiting doctors, so called Locum Physicians.

Even years back when we only

had Dr. Young and Dr. Broomhead and when our population was twice as large as it is now, health care was delivered in a more timely manner.

Recently someone said to me, referring to the hospital and the clinic "the administration's main priority is not to deliver patient care but to collect large salaries for a few fat cats. They should sh*t or get off the pot". That was a crude way to express the sentiment but not far off the mark.

Revellers Ski Club members brought happiness and enjoyment to others in Chapleau during 1930s Chapleau Moments by Michael J. Morris

For "good, clean fun, fellowship and entertainment" nothing could compare to the Revellers Ski Club, according to Vince Crichton in his book 'Pioneering in Northern Ontario'.

Founded in the Crichton home at the corner of Aberdeen and Birch streets (the three story red brick house), on the eve of the Great Depression in January 1929, it became an important part of community life until it was disbanded near the beginning of World War II in 1940.

Vince shared the names of the founding members, most of whom were members of early Chapleau families.

They included: Norman Barker, Hubert B o u c h e r, G e o rg e Crichton, Grant Henderson, Borden McLeod, Hector Buncombe, Albert 'Gussie' Evans, Goldie Matheson and John 'Jiggs' Goldstein.

Within a week, Elaine Bowles, Georgina Boucher, Marnie Godfrey, Freda Jarrett, Queenie Matheson, Ida Stevens, Allie Barker, John Doig and Bill Chandler joined.

The first president was Norman Barker with George Crichton as secretary.

Simple rules prevailed. At first membership was limited to fifty and

yearly membership was one dollar. During the winter a ski-hike was held each Friday night with a social or dance to follow at Perpete's Hall on Elm Street (about where the Pentecostal Church is today) to follow. The cost was 10 cents per member.

No alcohol was permitted.

Vi n c e n o t e d that within two weeks the restricted membership was filled and there was a waiting list.

In due course it was raised to 100, and eventually became unrestricted as the club's popularity increased.

Each Friday afternoon a ski trail was broken by members and the hike was usually about an hour.

Sleigh rides and skating parties were added later.

Vi n c e w r o t e that a few of the original members "chief among which was John Goldstein ... affectionately known as 'Jiggs' were very good square dancers and a social evening was not complete unless everyone joined in one or two good 'hoedowns' as they were called.

"These were danced to the toe and heel-tapping tunes played by Herb Lucas (who worked with Alf Comte in the barber shop) on a harmonica, on which he had no equal.... The ski club was responsible for the rejuvenation of square

In 1933, the election campaign for club president was amazing. Candidates stood on the upper verandah of the Algoma Hotel (later

the Hublit) delivering election speeches, another strung a large banner across Main Street, and signs could be seen at street corners urging members to vote for one candidate or another.

Entretien avec deux jeunes Métis passionnées Par Kathie Cummings

C'est plutôt impressionnant de nos jours de rencontrer deux jeunes fières de leur culture, de leur origine et surtout prêtes à partager leurs connaissances sur le sujet.

Depuis environ 2 ans, Katrina Keech, 11 ans, et April Fortin, 10 ans, dansent régulièrement lors de P o w Wo w. A p r è s avoir fait des recherches approfondies, les mamans de nos deux élèves de l'école SacréCœur ont découvert des racines autochtones plus profondes qu'elles ne le pensaient. Les deux mères ont donc choisi d'initier les filles à la culture Métis. Katrina

et April ont immédiatement aimé danser.

Pour elles, c'est amusant, ceci permet la rencontre de nouveaux amis et c'est une façon pour elles de démontrer leur culture aux autres. D'après April, le «Grand Entry» peut être gênant, même épeurant avec tous ces gens qui les regardent.

«Puis, quand on commence à danser, on oublie autour, on ne voit plus les gens» ajoute-t-elle.

Les filles ont même pris le temps de m'expliquer la signification des robes qui sont confectionnées d'après leur nom et leur couleur, assignées par un aîné, ainsi que leur clan qui vient

directement de leurs ancêtres. La disposition du Pow-Wow est aussi importante. Les danses se font autour du tambour, toujours dans le sens des aiguilles de l'horloge.

On y retrouve aussi un feu. Chaque danse et chaque costume ont une signification. Les jeunes filles ont appris à danser en suivant une personne lors des Pow Wow. «C'est jamais mal, il n'y a pas de mauvaises façons de danser» d'après Katrina qui à son tour initie tranquillement de jeunes membres de sa famille.

La passion qui anime ces deux jeunes filles est surprenante et touchante. «Quand nous dansons, nos

La curiosité des autres ne pose aucun malaise chez Katrina et April, elles sont même très à l'aise de répondre aux

Interview with two young passionate Métis

to meet two young students that are proud of their culture, their

origin and most of all willing to share their knowledge of it.

For the past two years, Katrina Keech (11 years old) and April Fortin (10 years old), dance regularly at Powwows.

After researching e x t e n s i v e l y, t h e mothers of our two students of école Sacré Coeur discovered their Aboriginal roots – deeper than expected.

The mothers decided to introduce their girls to Métis Culture.

Katrina and April immediately loved to dance. For them, it is amusing and permits them to meet new friends and to share their culture with others. According to April, she feels shy at the Grand Entry with all the people watching. ``But when we start dancing, we forget what's around us and no longer see all the people.`` The girls even took the time to explain the signification of their regalia that has been made according to their spirit names and colors that were assigned to them

by an elder as well as their clan deriving from their ancestors.

All placement and positioning of a Powwow are very important as well. The dances are done around the drum, always in a clockwise manner. We can also find a fire. Every dance and regalia worn has a meaning. These young girls learned to dance by following others at Powwows. ``It's never wrong, there are no wrong ways to dance``, says Katrina who is now slowly mentoring younger members of her family.

The passion that moves these young girls is surprising and touching. ``When we dance, our friends see that we are proud to be Métis. They can learn about the subject, unlike sitting at home.

Our friends ask questions.`` The curiosity of others does not make Katrina and April uneasy and they are even very comfortable answering questions with the upmost sincerity. They are quite excited for the upcoming community Powwow on Monday, April 5th at Chapleau Public School.

Time to look to the future: think warm sunlight; think open water; think green.

While we dream of the next few months, we remember Canada Day. It is important that this national celebration be a successful community event. This requires ideas and participation.

of a violin. He would make an dignified entry on stage and go through the motions of playing the violin perfectly.

But, hidden behind the scenery on the stage in the old Town Hall auditorium was Alf Comte playing his violin!

The Revellers Ski Club went far beyond its original

purpose as the talent in the group was discovered and they came to be in demand by other organizations. They appeared at the Catholic Women's League annual St. Patrick's Day concert, and did a floor show for the Girls Softball Club among other performances.

Vi n c e n o t e d that there was never any charge for any of

the services provided by this club. " C o m p e n s ation was derived from the many happy pleasant hours of preparation and the knowledge that they were bringing some measure of happiness and enjoyment to others."

Les Services de santé de Chapleau seront complètement sans fumée à compter du 1er mai!

En tant qu'organisme de soins de santé, nous nous concentrons principalement sur la santé de notre communauté et c'est pourquoi il ne sera plus permis de fumer où que ce soit sur la propriété des Services de santé de Chapleau Health Services (SSCHS). Depuis bien des années, il est interdit de fumer à moins de neuf mètres de toute entrée; néanmoins, nous emboîtons maintenant le pas à bon nombre d'autres hôpitaux de l'Ontario et nous interdirons aux gens de fumer où que ce soit sur la propriété des SSCHS à compter du 1er mai. Cette interdiction vise l'Hôpital Général de Chapleau, le Centre médical de Chapleau, la cour de la Résidence Bignucolo et les zones qui étaient auparavant désignées comme des zones fumeurs. Cette interdiction de fumer visera aussi les terrains de stationnement et les véhicules personnels stationnés sur la propriété des SSCHS. Tous les patients, visiteurs et membres du personnel devront quitter complètement la propriété de l'hôpital s'ils veulent fumer.

On pourrait demander aux personnes qui contreviennent à cette politique de quitter les lieux et, si elles ne se conforment pas à cette politique, on pourrait aussi leur remettre une ordonnance d'interdiction d'accès aux lieux.

Tous les membres du personnel infirmier de l'Équipe de santé familiale sont formés pour offrir le programme de renoncement au tabac « STOP » aux patients inscrits de l'Équipe de santé familiale. On encourage les gens de la communauté qui ne sont pas inscrits auprès de l'Équipe de santé familiale à voir leur médecin de famille au sujet des moyens qui pourraient les aider à cesser de fumer.

Chapleau Health Services will be completely smoke-free

by May 1st!

As a health care organization, our primary focus is the health of our community and it's for this reason that smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on SSCHS property. For many years, smoking has been banned within nine metres of any entrance; however we are following the lead of many Ontario hospitals, and will be banning smoking anywhere on SSCHS property, effective on May 1st.

This includes Chapleau General Hospital, Chapleau Medical Center, Bignucolo Residence Courtyard, and areas previously designated as smoking areas.

The smoking ban will also include parking lots and personal vehicles parked on SSCHS property. All patients, visitors and staff members will be required to leave the hospital property entirely, if they wish to smoke.

Violators of the policy may be asked to leave the property and also may be given trespassing orders if they do not comply with the policy.

All nurses at the Family Health Team are trained to offer the “STOP” smoking cessation program to rostered patient.

Community members who are not rostered with the Family Health Team are encouraged to see their family doctor regarding options that may help them in their efforts to quit smoking.

CHADWIC HOME, FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE. Offers shelter, emotional support, and information for women and their children who are in crisis situations. We have a Toll Free Crisis Line which is staffed 24 hours a day. We can arrange for free transportation to the Centre for women who live in the Algoma/Chapleau area. We also offer support to women who live in the communities of Chapleau, White River, Dubreuilville, and Hornepayne through our Outreach Program.

Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services. If you need someone to talk to or if you just need someone to listen, call our Toll Free Crisis line at 1-800461-2242 or you can drop in at the Centre. We are here for you.
