Chapleau Curling wraps up for another year
A
nother curling season has come to a close! It has been a great year with a full November to March season. Curlers were treated to a total of four bonspiels and two Friday night socials. The club also hosted two private parties. Membership was up this year with 48 full members and 10 spare members. Additionally, as many as 42 “Little Rockers” participated in 7 weeks of Thursday afternoon curling. Our Club hosted free curling for these children from grades 4 – 8. It was also a year for equipment upgrades. Thanks to a $10,600 grant from the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, the club purchased new ice maintenance equipment, curling brooms, extenders, sliders and grippers. By all accounts, the quality of ice was excellent this year (thanks Terry), and the new equipment was used by both our youth and seniors. New, reusable mesh curling rings were also purchased for installation next season. Now that the ice has melted, and the club cleaned at the end of our lease, the curling executive is at work preparing for the 2013/14 season. Two large Regional bonspiels have been approved for Chapleau,
the Knights of Columbus in January and the MNR in February. These will provide a big boost for our club, and for the community at large with over 50 out of town teams. A big thank you to our Curling Executive and the many volunteers who put in countless hours installing, maintaining and removing the ice, preparing and serving food, bartending, cleaning after bonspiels, and conducting day to day business. Shamrock Bonspiel The final bonspiel of the year, the Shamrock Spiel, was held on March 15-16. A record 19 teams signed

night of entertainment with live music by O-TM (On The Mark). This bonspiel was slightly different with a point system format. A three-game round robin was
followed by one final round of the top 16 teams. Godfrey Pilote's team took the A-Event, Joel Langelier the BEvent and Susan Lindquist the C-Event. Cont’d on P.4

with Mayor and Council Monday before touring the site with CP officials and the team of specialists assembled to deal with t h e m u l t i p l e c h a llenges arising from the accident. “The Mayor and Council indicated that they were satisfied with the progress on the site,” said Hughes. “I was told they’ve had nothing but cooperation from CP and feel the relationship is defined by open lines of communication.” After visiting the scene, Hughes feels confident that all entities involved are working together to ensure the best resolu-
tion from this derailment. “The site is somewhat remote and the initial work of containment has to be followed by removing the cars which meant building a road to the rail line,” said Hughes. “What I found encouraging was that environmental monitoring was set up immediately.” Hughes has been in contact with her provincial counterpart, AlgomaM a n i t o u l i n M P P, Michael Mantha, since the derailment occurred. “We share the information we
receive so that we can work in an organized way,” said Hughes. “I am confident that this
is being handled in a professional manner which gives me hope that the impact will be
as minimal as possible in this particular situation.”
