RELAY FOR LIFE in Chapleau gearing up for our Seventh year! S By Gisele Barlow even years ago I decided to volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, I really just wanted to canvass or sell some Daffodils but the CCS asked me to take on a leadership role. I accepted the role of Branch president, not really knowing what it all meant. Like the rest of us, I had lost loved ones, I had seen suffering and I just wanted a cure. I decided to host a Relay for Life and set about finding a committee. I asked a friend, who in turn asked a friend and so on. Soon we had assembled our committee and we set to work planning Chapleau’s very first Relay For Life event. On June 20th 2008 Chapleau gathered together to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. Since that very first Relay, Chapleau has consistently come together each year in the

spirit of community and friendship to support the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission to eradicate cancer. Each year we walk through the darkness, through the cold, through the rain in memory of those we lost, in support of those who fight and in the hope for finding a cure. Chapleau is a small town, with a huge h e a r t . We l o v e o u r family, friends and neighbours. We are

friendly, supportive and generous. In the 6 years of Relay we have raised $192 167.00 towards a cure. Be proud! Our dedication and support has funded life altering medication trials, essential research, cancer resources and advocacy for prevention. The Canadian Cancer Society Chapleau branch currently has three Chapleau volunteer drivers who take cancer patients to their cancer

related appointments. In the 2013 Relay for life 39 survivors registered for the victory lap. Survivors can register for the survivor celebration and victory walk by contacting Robin Greer at 705 864 1782 or picking up registration forms at Brokerlink Insurance. There is nothing more moving than the lighting of the luminaries at each event. The luminaries light up the night and remind us why

we walk, last year 579 luminaries lined the track. That is 579 loved ones, 579 deep and meaningful reflections of our children, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, spouses, grandparents, friends, and neighbours. T h i s y e a r ’s Relay for Life takes place at the “field of Dreams” track on Friday June 13th. Opening Ceremonies begin at 6:45 p.m. The theme this year is

“Come celebrate with us”. A celebration of our favourite holidays and special occasions will guide our activities and decorations. To register a team for this years Relay please visit www.relayfor life.ca or contact Gisele Barlow at 705 864 2507 or giselebarlow@yahoo.c om for more information, to volunteer or to register offline. Come on out and be a part of Chapleau’s fight against Cancer.

Novice HL Huskies finish season Golden By Monique Rancourt he 2013-2014 hockey season for the Novice House League Huskies ended this past weekend in Copper Cliff where the team shined during their last tournament of the season. Huskies scored a combined total of 41 goals and with outstanding goaltending only allowed one goal all

T

weekend. This isn't the Huskies' only gold of the s e a s o n e i t h e r. I n February they competed i n t h e Va l l e y E a s t Renegades tournament also bringing home gold. Each child was rewarded at that tournament with a chance to hold the “Stanley Cup”. Those were some very happy 78 year olds. The team also played in the

Schumacher Day Annual House League Tournament in November where they had a devastating loss in the semi-finals. They also had wins against Dubreuilville and Thessalon in exhibition games and experienced only 3 losses during the season. The kids learned a lot of new skills along the way all while having fun. The amazing coaching staff this season was a huge part of their success. They knew when to work the kids hard and when to let them be kids. Most notably the coaches organized their own mini-Olympics that the kids participated in on the ice. At the end of that practice each Olympian was rewarded with a donut decorated with a Canada Flag! Thanks go out to

Kirk Ellis (Head Coach), Robert (Boum) Moreau (Assistant Coach), Jon McEachren (Trainer) and K e l l y E l l i s , Yv e s Boucher (Managers). I'm sure I speak for all the parents when I say “Thank You for everything this year. Your dedication, loyalty, patience and attitude were appreciated. Our kids have memories that

will last a lifetime because of all of you!” Novice HL Huskies players are: Easton Rancourt, Cole Ellis, Hallee Moreau, Drake Synett, Emmanuel Boucher, Vincent Morin, Noah Raposo, Brett Taylor, Andrew Martel, Ethan Guertin, Dawson Panamick and between the pipes, Justin Martineau.
