Another successful fishing derby

raving a cold 30 degrees Celsius, 400 participants headed out at or around 7 am on Saturday morning, February the 11th, to see if their fishing skills and luck would be sufficient to haul in the big winner. An increase of 12% in participants from the 2010 derby kept the organizers on their toes. B y n i n e o’clock, five qualifying pikes were registered. By the end of the day, 11 qualifiers were registered. A lot of challenging catches w e r e r e p o r t e d but

unfortunately did not make the 24 inch minimum qualifying length. A balmy -14 was reached during the day making this event very enjoyable. A buffet style supper was catered by Aux Trois Moulins Restaurant, serving close to 500 fishermen and friends in one hour. Compliments on the supper abounded during and after supper. The Chapleau Business community came thru once again donating many prizes which were awarded starting at 7 p.m. At one point, Bill Groves, who had purchased a few dozen Ultimate Fishing Town Canada t-shirts and proceeded in throwing them to the participants sitting at the tables creating mayhem. Last year Chapleau was named Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town and the t-shirts were available at the arena during the derby. We hope that the derby will be able to continue as it is an exciting event and would like to turn it over to the Recreation Department. The derby committee will do everything possible to assist & encourage another committee to take it on.
Congratulations are in order for a job well done for this year ’s derby along with all previous derbies. Coordinator Bill Groves, with his relentless efforts to make this event successful year after year and to his committee members, Michael Levesque, Roger Perreault, Elizabeth Michaud a n d E m i l y Ta y l o r along with all other volunteers. You can all stand proud to have organized such a successful event.
