OBITUARY Laurier “Larry” Ribout Died peacefully at the age of 94 at the Bignucolo Residence on Thursday, January 30, 2014. Predeceased by his loving wife Aline (nee Pilon), his parents Frederic and Dorothy Ribout and many brothers and sisters. Survived by his children Colette Ribout, Guy Ribout (Jan), Madeleine Delany (Tom), Michel Ribout (Anita) and Pierre Ribout (Jodi). Also survived by his grandchildren Curtis, Trevor, Amanda, Katie and Jennifer. He will be missed by his many friends and relatives. A heart-felt thank you to all hospital staff for the wonderful care given to our dad. Visitation was held on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 7 -9 pm at the P.M. Gilmartin Visitation Centre. there’s a problem while more and more families get stuck with massive bills.”

Members of the NDP caucus says that complaints about Hydro One’s billing practices have been building for years, even while Cabinet Ministers insisted that the problem was being solved. New Democratic Leader Andrea Horwath first called on the Ombudsman to investigate Hydro One billing errors in 2010, when she sent a letter to Marin citing multiple instances of Ontarians being billed up to ten times the normal amount, or having their life savings drained from their bank accounts by Hydro One. At the time, Liberal Energy Minister Brad Duguid insisted that soon such issues “will be a problem of the past” and claimed, “we’re solving the problem” (Toronto Star, December 14, 2010).

But the problems have grown

worse. New Democrats have been contacted by dozens of Ontario homeowners and businesses about overbilling, including a saw mill operator whose power bill stayed high even when the mill was shut down for weeks at a time.

Another complaint came from a retired school teacher who has had to take out a loan against his woodstoveheated home to pay for hydro bills which suddenly increased almost tenfold. When Hydro One does admit a billing error, they refuse to issue a refund, instead applying the sometimes thousands of dollars in overpayment as credits towards future service.

“Billing errors for thousands of dollars are threatening the livelihoods of families across the province, and Hydro One only addresses the issue when it gets dragged in front of the media.

Something has to change,” said Gélinas, MPP for Nickel Belt.

Chapleau MNR Ready to host the 57th Annual Northeast Regional Curling Bonspiel There is an air of excitement in the building at the Ministry of Natural Resources complex in Chapleau as the district prepares to host the 57th Annual Northeast Regional Curling Bonspiel quickens.

It's been ten years since Chapleau last hosted this annual event which brings a huge economic boost to both the community and the Curling Club.

With 30 teams registered this year, hotels are booked and local eateries and businesses can expect to benefit as well.

The annual event, which takes place between February 21-23, attracts current and former MNR

employees from the across the province.

While the competition in the bonspiel, which rotates around the region and was last hosted by Chapleau in 2004 results in some keen competition and rivalries, it also serves as an event which brings together many longtime friends created at the workplace over the years. Many retired employees make it a point to visit the bonspiel each year to rekindle friendships.

O f f i c i a l opening ceremonies to mark the start of the bonspiel will take place on the Friday evening with many local and visiting dignitaries and officials expected to attend.

Upon his arrival in Canada in 1 9 0 2 f r o m I t a l y, George Bucciarelli first worked at various jobs in several locations for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

By 1910, he was working in Chapleau and became fed up, so he caught a train for Sudbury, planning to return home to Italy. However, while in Sudbury, he decided to look at the price of lumber, bought a carload and had it shipped to Chapleau.

He used it to start his store on Lorne Street but for a time it

was only open early in the morning and in the e v e n i n g a s M r.

Bucciarelli went back to work for the CPR in the shops.

The town was installing the municipal waterworks system, and he had built several rooms on his store which he rented to workers on the project. He also

worked on that project.

In 1911, Mrs. Bucciarelli and their son Angelo arrived and Chapleau became home for them.

In due course, he improved the store and built a house and for a time had a second location in the uptown area.

By 1935, celebrating 25 years in business, Angelo had become the store manager, and they had become wholesale tobacconists and the agent for Canadian Oils Limited, supplying gasoline for the motor vehicles that were beginning to appear in Chapleau.

Mr. Bucciarelli was spending a lot of his time at the farm he established on the Chapleau highway in the area of the municipal cemetery, and the picnics for children were started in 1931.

The area later became known as Bucciarelliville.

The picnics also included a show by "The Clowns" who were young men of Chapleau all attired for their role in entertaining the children.

In 1935, as a matter of interest, those working for Mr. Bucciarelli included Fred Barty, who the Chapleau Post described as the "1st Lieutenant", Emmett Brazel, Irene Godbout

Bucciarelli's Beach established particularly for children of Chapleau in great "spirit of citizenship" who later worked as head cashier at the Dominion store, G e r t r u d e R o f f e y, Leslie Perfetto, Pat Frawley and John Ciuffreda.

According to the Chapleau Post, John looked after the "beverage" or "refreshment" room advising him that the writer would soon be there calling for "Two big jugs John!"

Bucciarelli did not retire and pursue his own interests entirely.

In fact, during the 1940s, he developed "Bucciarelli's Beach" for which he is likely best remembered by many Chapleauites.

After my column on the children's picnics, I received an email from Frank Bucciarelli, who arrived in Chapleau with his parents in 1953.

Frank included the photos of his Uncle George and the beach area, likely taken in the summer of 1949 as the area was being completed.

Frank wrote: "The back of the pictures that I sent you are stamped January 16, 1950. I believe that this is when they were printed in Sudbury; the pictures were taken in the summer time.

When we came to Canada in 1953 the beach, as far as I remember had been completed just a few years before."

store open in the summer. It was also a great place to swim, complete with sandy area and diving board and became very popular. Frank also noted there was great blueberry picking in the bush near the beach.

Beverley (Swanson) Hamilton in an email reminded me that the only place where white cream

soda was available in Chapleau, was at the beach confectionery store. I recalled it right away.

book, "Pioneering in Northern Ontario" Vince Crichton noted that Mr. Bucciarelli's "best friends were the children of Chapleau".

On November 2, 1947, Mr. Bucciarelli was asked to attend at his property and was greeted by a large group of citizens and the Town Band.

A letter to Mr. Bucciarelli, signed by Reeve Frank Edwards expressed the community's sincere appreciation of the many improvements he had undertaken in Chapleau and for the spirit of citizenship that prompted him to make them available for the public pleasure and enjoyment. Particular tribute was paid for Bucciarelliville.

"We thank you Mr. Bucciarelli. We know that you desire much satisfaction in seeing the enjoyment the people -- particularly the young folk -find in visiting your grounds", the letter said in part.

G e o r g e Bucciarelli died on January 6, 1967 at age 88.

Highway maintenance contractors fined for non conformance MTO highway maintenance contractors have been fined for non conformance.

Aside from complaints from individuals, articles were written complaining of these same issues three years ago.

Could lives have been saved, in the past, had the highways been taken care of properly? Probably.

Would liability fall on the non compliant contractor or the MTO where complaints fell on deaf ears?

An increase of highway closures in

the last three years, probably a historical record, certainly indicates the lack of highway maintenance.

MTO spokesperson Gordan Rennie said in an email statement: “This winter has seen nonconfor-mances to our outcome targets being imposed in all five maintenance areas leading to financial consequences being issued.”

Let’s hope that people in charge rectify problems in a more timely fashion as we move forward.

À L’ÉCOLE SACRÉ-CŒUR À l’école Sacré-Cœur de Chapleau, notre mission est non seulement d’offrir une éducation de qualité à nos élèves, mais aussi de leur faire vivre une culture francoontarienne dynamique.

Dans un monde souvent trop médiatisé, nos jeunes subissent plusieurs influences externes. Le défi devient alors grand puisque nous cherchons à aider nos jeunes à construire une identité culturelle.

Ainsi, nous organisons des activités qui permettent à nos élèves de vivre pleinement leur francophonie.

Tous les mois, les élèves se réunissent au gymnase et célèbrent autant leurs succès que ceux de leurs camarades.

Les ralliements-succès permettent de souligner les mérites académiques, sportifs et les bons choix de nos élèves.

Ils mettent aussi en valeur la vertu du mois, en novembre, c’était la vertu du pardon. Nous avons aussi une thématique pour la journée, le 2 décembre dernier, les élèves et le personnel étaient invités à porter fièrement les couleurs de leur équipe sportive préférée. C’est une belle occasion de sentir pleinement notre appartenance à l’école.

Il nous importe aussi d’impliquer nos jeunes dans la communauté. La

cellule communautaire peut être riche en influences culturelles positives. Les élèves de la 3e, 4e, 5e, et 6e année ont, par exemple, participé à la marche de la sobriété.

En décembre, nous impliquons nos jeunes dans la collecte de denrées non périssables pour la communauté. Pour encourager nos élèves, le personnel de l’école est prêt à relever des défis à chacune des étapes franchies.

Les fêtes de l’année deviennent aussi riches en enseignement culturel.

Nos élèves de la 3e à la 6e ont participé de nouveau cette année à la cérémonie du jour du Souvenir au cénotaphe de la Légion. Nous avons aussi les préparatifs à la fête de Noël. Le concert de Noël et le dîner préparé par le CEC sont des activités parmi plusieurs autres qui permettent de beaux rassemblements dans un esprit des Fêtes. À l’école Sacré-Cœur, nous cherchons constamment des idées novatrices qui permettent aux élèves d’afficher et exprimer leur appartenance à la culture francoontarienne. Donc, cette année en visitant notre école, levez la tête bien haute, vous verrez les couleurs de la francophonie.

LA SEMAINE DE LA FRANCOPHONIE (17 au 27 mars 2014) C'est encore un peu tôt pour vous donner tous les détails des activités, sauf nous allons vous présenter une des activités locales qui aura lieu.

20 mars: Souper communautaire (12$ ou 6$ pour les 8 ans et moins) Au menu: jambon, tourtière, fèves au lard, salade, dessert et café-thé Le prix inclut non seulement le souper, mais aussi le lancement du recueil d'anecdotes « Regard sur le passé » et une adaptation locale de « Dieu Merci!». C’est tout une aubaine!!! ÉRIC ROBITAILLE « HONTE À RIEN » (ONTARIEN) Comme l’explique Darwin, Éric Robitaille a évolué. D'abord, il était singe, puis Français de France, ensuite il est devenu Québécois, puis enfin, Franco-Ontarien. À cette hauteur, il a eu le vertige.

Mais il n’a eu honte à rien. Animateur à Radio-Canada à Sudbury depuis des années, Éric est un observateur fasciné par l’Ontario français, si bien qu’aujourd’hui il comprend son milieu d’adoption et se sent chez lui.

Dans ce spectacle, avec son humour grinçant, mais aussi avec beaucoup d'affection, Éric explique comment il a fini par comprendre sa blonde, son entourage, sa ville et sa province d'adoption, dont la langue et les particularités sociales lui ont souvent tendu des pièges de double sens ou de bizarrerie.

Il a souvent eu l'air fou depuis son arrivée en Ontario. Malheureusement pour lui. Mais heureusement pour nous parce que le récit de ses aventures dans le Nord de l'Ontario est souvent à se tordre de rire.

C’est avec un grand plaisir que le Centre culturel Louis-Hémon vous présente le spectacle d’humour <Honte à rien> avec Éric Robitaille. De plus, en première partie, le club d’impro TuxSpeedo de l’École secondaire Trillium vous divertira avec quelquesuns de leurs sketchs. Le spectacle aura lieu le dimanche 23 février à 19 heures au cafétorium de l’École secondaire Trillium.

JOSEPH GAGNÉ, CONFÉRENCIER À SUDBURY Un ancien de l'école secondaire catholique Trillium, Joseph Gagné, doctorant en histoire à l’Université Laval, sera conférencier le jeudi 27 février 2014 à 17 h à la Fromagerie Elgin de Sudbury.

La conférence intitulée « Un officier canadien errant: redécouvrir Louis Liénard de Beaujeu » est offerte conjointement par la Société historique du Nouvel-Ontario et l’Institut francoontarien.

Dans le cadre de l’historiographie de la guerre de Sept Ans, le Pays d’en Haut (dont fait partie le territoire du Nouvel-Ontario) fait trop souvent l’objet d’oubli. Par extension, le souvenir de remarquables personnages de la région est également éclipsé par celui des combattants qui se trouvent sur le principal front de guerre dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent.

Dans ce communiqué, Joseph Gagné propose de dépoussiérer la mémoire de Louis Liénard de Beaujeu de Villemonde, ancien commandant du fort Kaministiquia (Thunder Bay), Michipicoton (Wawa) et le dernier commandant français du fort Michilimackinac (Mackinaw City, Michigan). La vie de ce personnage nous offre une fenêtre sur la situation qui sévit dans le Pays d’en Haut et le Pays des Illinois au seuil de la Conquête, tout en nous offrant un point de départ sur de futures questions de recherche en lien avec l’Ontario sous le Régime français.

On Wednesday, January 22, 2014, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment investigated a case involving two abandoned dogs.

The dogs were found by a passing motorist approximately 30 km west of Chapleau on a desolate part of Highway 101.

When found, both animals were near death with a temperature of -35 degrees that morning.

The owner of these two dogs has not been identified and we need your help.
