Winter Carnival Kidtivities II F WINTER CARNIVAL By Michael Levesque irst, let us return to last week's article and THE CARDBOARD BOX RACE. Things may have been stated vaguely the last goaround. Each participant is responsible for acquiring his/her own box. I wrote that the racing box was a cardboard box and duct tape, nothing more. I need to add a few more details. The box, of any size, must stand alone: it cannot be reinforced

with a wooden or any other frame. The duct tape reinforces the box's bottom. Use as much as necessary. All racers must pre-register with the Leisure Director, Joel Langelier(8640154), prior to the race. Remember the race is at 1:00PM on Sunday, February 16th at the Chapleau Public Schools Hill. I was approached about snow sculpturing for the carnival. Yes, we will have a Snow Sculpturing Contest!

CHAPLEAU

Prizes are for two categories; private homes and schools. We encourage children to convince parents to display each family's creative flair with a magnificent snow sculpture in the front yard. We also encourage teachers and students to band together to build a

sculpture of Rembrandt stature. All contest entrees must register with the Leisure Director, Joel Langelier, by Friday, February 7th at 8640154. A Big Screen Movie, the animated film, " Free Birds" is showing in the Arena Community Hall on

Thursday, February 13th, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. Admission is a carnival badge. A Teen Dance is scheduled for Friday, February 14th at the Arena Community Hall. For ages 14-18. Admission is $5.00 with a carnival badge and $8.00 without a badge. Saturday, February 15th, brings a crowd favourite, The Born To Ride Horseback riding. This place from 1:00PM to

3:00PM in the A.W. Moore Arena parking lot. Rides are $5.00 each. The Chapleau Cree First Nation hosts The 19th Annual Children's Fish Derby on Sunday, February 16th at Fox Lake. Fishing starts at 11:00AM to 2:00PM. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free hot dogs and hot chocolate to all participants. Contact 864-0784 for more details.

Electricity exporting cost Ontarians over $1 billion in 2013: NDP

O

ntarians who are already paying some of the highest hydro bills in Canada paid over $1 billion to subsidize power for neighbouring jurisdictions last year, New Democrat Energy C r i t i c P e t e r Ta b u n s revealed today. While thousands of Ontarians sat in the dark during the

blackout, Ontario was actually giving away electricity to the United States and other jurisdictions. Tabuns says Ontario should be focused on delivering affordable reliable power for families and businesses, not paying private power companies and dumping excess electricity.

“Families in Ontario are feeling squeezed, and they keep seeing their hydro power bills go up. It doesn’t make sense for people to pay more to subsidize cheap power for people across the border,” said NDP Energy Critic Peter Tabuns. “The energy system is broken. We should be focused on

delivering affordable reliable power, but the Liberals s eem more interested in helping out well-connected private power companies.” According to the IESO, Ontario exported 18.3 TWh of electricity in 2013, which was sold wholesale at an average price of 2.65 cents/KWh to five neighbouring jurisdictions: Michigan, New York, Minnesota, Manitoba and Quebec. Power generated in Ontario cost 8.55 cents/KWh to produce, with Ontario ratepayers picking up the

difference through the Global Adjustment Charge. Ontario ratepayers subsidized electricity exports to the tune of $1.079 billion, or around $220 for each of Ontario’s 4.9 million ratepayers. Ta b u n s n o t e d that on December 28, 2013, while tens of thousands of families were still without power, the Hourly Ontario Energy Price hit $0.00, with Ontario giving away power. While Ontario families were in the dark over Christmas, we were literally giving away

power, and on top of this it’s costing over $1 billion to sell below-cost power outside Ontario,” c o n t i n u e d Ta b u n s , “Liberal private power contracts, billions wasted on cancelled gas plants, and private energy trading are driving up people's bills.” Ontario’s electricity system set up by the Conservatives, and maintained by the Liberals leaves Ontario’s neighbours paying a lower price for Ontario power, which is subsidized by Ontario ratepayers.
